Updated and beautiful, located in a quite cul de sac with ample parking and room to play, just around the bend from park, swimming pool and walking path, there is nothing this home leaves to be desired. The modern, open kitchen, great backyard and covered patio give you plenty of entertainment space. The bonus room handles hobbies, play space and so much more. Need an oďŹƒce? it is here, just o the entrance. All this close to shopping, downtown and schools.

From the Home Office in Corvallis...
Publisher's Update WHAT A FUN SPRING WE'VE HAD (sarcasm alert)
Take a look at this issue online (just visit our website and click to view the digital edition) EVERY single Best of the Valley winner's website is a clickable link, so you can browse away until next year's contest!
THE HIGH NOTE? ALL THE SUBMISSIONS WE RECEIVED FOR OUR 2020 "BEST OF THE VALLEY" CONTEST
Scott Alexander, Publisher
My wife has deemed some of my responses to the situation "ridiculous." But I'll tell you one person who's not gonna get this bug, me! I can barely handle a cold.
Don't forget! If you have events planned, even events that are way off in the future, you can post them for free on our website at:
www.willametteliving.com Just click "Post Your Event."
Note: Please bear in mind that our Best of the Valley contest began before the Coronavirus, in Oregon anyway, so some of our winners are still not yet open, or have drastically altred their normal schedules and procedures. Call first, and please be patient while this mess gets sorted out.
I usually feel good about living in Oregon, but as of late, I'm feeling pretty great about it. Our state (particularly the Willamette Valley) has done well with all the virus precautions -- we've kept our case numbers low and our public displays of frustration to a minimum. We seem to be on a good trajectory as everyone begins to get back to business. It has been a long, disorienting slog though. When did we even start this stay-at-home business? It seems like years! BUT, as we begin to resume life as partially normal, don't get complacent, it's not over -- no one has told the Coronavirus it's time to magically disappear. There are some silver linings to the changes we have to make, like cities talking about closing down streets so restaurants can serve food outside. I've thought that would be a good idea for years! Now we can pretend we're on a European vacation, in the middle of Main Street. Bon Appetit! In the interest of breaking the cabin fever, our partners at Visit Tillamook have some suggestions for you to get out and enjoy some virus-free sea air! Check out our list of campgrounds to get your summer on. Don't have a camper? No problem, go check out Hart's Camp and their Airstream rentals! Stay in the coolest campers made, without breaking the bank having to buy one.
Now that we've all been spending more time in our houses, Heidi Powell of Powell Construction (whom you voted the number one remodeling contractor!) has designs on improving the four walls you're looking at. Take a look at her article. Art is raging on in the valley as usual, Brian Egan has his usual list of events taking place (6 feet please) at The Arts Center and beyond, and the LaSells Stewart Center is getting ready to welcome you back. Most of our local restaurants are rolling with curbside pickup, delivery and in some cases, sit down dining with some creative use of space. Don't forget to tip your servers! And, the highlight of this issue, the Best of the Valley contest... boy did you go to town, so to speak, on this year's online voting. It took us a while to tabulate. We had the biggest turnout ever. And congratulations to our winners -- good job all of you! Some were new to the game, like "Z Place to Dance" -- they were suggested in the "did we forget anything" section by a TON of voters, so we'd better add a Dance Lesson category next time. And some of our local businesses were runaway winners, like The Natty Dresser in Albany, Oscar and Tamalynne Hult swept the category with nearly every single vote, they came in ahead of Nordstrom! Not bad.
Scott www.willametteliving.com/subscribe Spending more time at home? Spending ALL your time at home? Save yourself the trip to pick up a free copy, and subscribe to Willamette Living.
We've made a change on the website! For a long time now, we've had a stream of our Instagram posts, but now you can share your favorite Willamette Valley Pics too! Just add the hashtag: #WillametteLiving to your description, and your photos will show up on our web site. Got new products? Having a special event? Trips to your favorite outdoor spots? A particularly cute dog? Winery fun? Tag 'em!

Art
Art in the Mid-Valley By Brian Egan Our world has been turned upside down since my last article, but the world of arts and culture has not been completely silenced. The Arts Center and most galleries, museums and performance venues were closed due to the Covid virus, but artists and performers have used creativity to share their talents in some new and exciting ways. Musicians have been broadcasting online mini-concerts from home, artists have been posting work on social media sites, and galleries are selling art from websites. Hopefully by the time you read this we will have the ability to enjoy these artists in person once again. The staff at The Arts Center has spent this downtime finding new ways to keep people engaged in the arts, here are some examples: *providing a public group site for sharing work (Virtual Art Gallery on Facebook), where artists can post work, ask for feedback or just view new work of others. *The Art Center’s website has a new section called Artmaking@home featuring fun things to make at home for children and families www.theartscenter.net *The Arts Center’s YouTube site now includes over 100 videos of past artist talks, exhibit tours and hands-on art projects. https://www.youtube.com/user/ TheArtsCenterCorvall/ A big thank you to Citizens Bank for helping The Arts Center secure funding to help through the crisis. That funding allowed the staff to continue providing art programming in our community. June 2-July 11, 2020 The first exhibit once The Arts Center re-opens will be an installation by artist Anne Mavor. The show, Claiming the Legacy of Oppression, aims to make European-American history and identity visible, to inspire white viewers in particular to claim positive and negative aspects of their family histories as a step towards participating in ending racism. The exhibit supports broad community outreach and uses the power of art for both understanding racism and social action. Ann began by researching her genealogy going back as far as 250 B.C.E. She chose

12 ancestors to represent her heritage, including royal figures, a slave owner, warriors, farmers, and a pilgrim. Mavor uses her own face in each of her ancestors’ portraits, and the connection between the characters is evident. She spent three years imagining these relatives, blending facts and educated assumptions. She hopes telling her own family’s historical role in oppression might inspire others to look at what it means to be white. The

program includes artworks, a panel discussion and activities to open discussion and foster change. Check The Arts Center website for current information. SAVE THE DATE! Arts Alive is a community arts event dedicated to raising the visibility of working artists in our city and region. Each summer we bring together creative types like artists, writers, performers, and musicians from all over the area to share their studio processes and art with the larger community. In the past, we’ve had ceramicists, jazz musicians, printmakers, glass artists, jewelers, poets, and more participate in Arts Alive! For our 3rd Annual Arts Alive, we are planning a bigger and better event on August 15, 2020, from 1-7 PM. Join us in discovering more artists, more
music, more poems, and more art. This is a great opportunity to grab a drink, eat some food, and of course, watch, make, and participate! Date: August 15, 2020 Time: 1:00 PM – 7:00 PM Place: The Arts Center & Arts Center Plaza, 700 SW Madison Ave. Corvallis, OR Cost: $10 Suggested donation My hope is that with our next issue I can once again include more information about upcoming events in our community. Until we can reach some sense of normalcy again, please try to find ways to support our local artists, musicians and other performers, many of whom were left out of recent government support efforts. Stay safe out there.

Books The Library of Lost and Found
they are already in trouble; they hide in motels while Jerry deals with the guilt and consequences of his tragic mistake. The brothers have nothing but each other, so they decide that whatever happens, they are in it together. This novel shows a gritty side of life - living in motels and running from your past mistakes - and Willy Vlautin is one of the best writers of gritty fiction. Beneath it all is a strong sense of humanity. -Mike

The Scar By Marina and Sergey Dyachenko
Preserving the Season By Mary Tregellas
The first book by Phaedra Patrick that I read was Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper, which I loved. I was very happy when the Library of Lost and Found was published, I was in for another delightful read. In it, volunteer librarian Martha receives a book of fairy stories with a note from her grandmother who she believed was dead. The book starts Martha on a quest to find the truth about her family, but also brings new experiences and joy. -Tammy
Motel Life By Willy Vlautin Driving his car while intoxicated in the middle of the night, Jerry Lee hits a kid who has run out in front of him. Jerry flees in a panic and turns to his brother Frank for help figuring out what to do. Feeling
Looking for a unique and intriguing story? Try this translated romantic fantasy novel (with lots of emotional anguish) first published in Russia in 1997. The mood is grim and tense but a complex relationship pushes the narrative rather than action sequences and cliffhangers. It’s a wholly original fantasy with appeal for readers who don’t normally enjoy romance or fantasy. -Charles

This delightful book goes beyond the usual jams and preserves, way beyond. Any self-sufficient Willamette Valley resident will enjoy this book and trying the included recipes. Tregellas has included not only recipes for the obvious (jams and preserves), but she also includes a section on kitchen tools you will need to prepare everything in the book. The book is really a celebration of the harvest with sections on chutneys, pies and tarts, savory pickles, and even flavored vodkas and breads. Now that we are all spending a lot more time at home, this book has a lot of new things for you to try. – Editor’s Choice

It’s the future, and humans have evolved technologically beyond death. People no longer die natural deaths, yet the global population must be regulated, or it will be unsustainable for the planet. Select citizens are taken as apprentices and trained to become Scythes – the only people legally mandated to kill so that the world may live. When Honorable Scythe Faraday selects not one, but two apprentices, Rowan and Citra, he takes the Scythedom down a path that leads to unforeseen changes. This first book in a trilogy by award-winning author Neal Shusterman is thrilling, twisty, funny, and

Windy Chien has elevated macramĂŠ from a craft to art on the wall. The photos in the book are beautiful and useful for those wanting to brush off a skill from the past, or just seeing the art of the simple knot. -Tammy

Top 5 RV Parks and Campgrounds
on the Tillamook Coast By Anne Norup
Barview Jetty Campground Beach
When you simply can’t get enough of the Oregon coast, bring your RV and stay for a week, a month or longer. From the crashing surf to saltwater bays and creeks, check out the must-visit RV parks and campgrounds in Tillamook County, each offering unlimited options for hiking, beachcombing, fishing, swimming and making new friends along the way. Online reservations are available for all the campgrounds listed below.
Bay. The park is located at the end of the historic Garibaldi Harbor where you can fall asleep listening to the sea lapping on the shore. This is an ideal park for fishing, boating, crabbing or clamming with a free boat launch for guests only 100 feet away from the inn. There’s a crab cooking area with picnic tables to enjoy your catch. Or it’s easy walking distance to the town’s restaurants, shops and antique stores.
Barview Jetty County Campground – Between Rockaway Beach and Garibaldi www.co.tillamook.or.us/gov/parks/campgrounds.htm
Thousand Trails: Pacific City RV & Camping Resort – Pacific City www.thousandtrails.com/oregon/pacific-city-rv-camping-resort/
As its name indicates, this campground sits on a jetty, ideal for fishing and scuba diving and it stretches along the ocean. Less than two miles north of Garibaldi, the 160-acre park has a long span of beach, making it perfect for surfing and beachcombing. Or simply sit and bask in the magnificence of the panoramic views. The campground has 73 full hook-up RV sites, 268 tent sites, six cabins, and three mobile mini cabins. Restrooms and showers are onsite. Several of the cabins are pet friendly. Harborview Inn & RV Park – Garibaldi www.harborviewfun.com No RV? No problem. You can camp out in the luxury of one of 18 ocean-inspired, recently remodeled rooms or there are 30 RV sites with full hook-ups, each with lovely views of Tillamook

With spectacular ocean views, yet tucked into a pristine forest of fir, alder, maple and cedar, this park offers a wide array of activities tailored to the seasons and your family. Hike the nature trail with easy access to the beach. Go fishing, clamming, surfing or beachcombing. There’s even room to bring your horse! A swimming pool, hot tub and arcade are in the lodge. Or enjoy basketball, pickleball and mini golf outside. There are 305 RV sites with electric and water, 51 include sewer. It’s a six-minute drive to Pacific City, home of Pelican Brewing and fun shopping. Note: This is a membership resort, but guests are always welcome. Hart’s Camp Airstream Hotel – Pacific City www.hartscamp.com Wish you could stay in an Airstream—that iconic “silver bullet” of American road-tripping inspiring envy around every curve? You
could splurge and buy your own or keep your savings for a rainy day and stay at Hart’s Camp in one of their seven Airstreams boasting vintage charm. Each one is either brand new or stylishly refurbished, all with indoor amenities you’d expect for the ultimate glamping experience—far from roughing it. Outdoor showers have garden plants tucked in wooden slats, perfect for a warm summer rinse or a lovely natural setting to douse sandy feet. If you’re mid-road trip with your own RV, there are 16 full hook-up sites here as well, giving you the opportunity to relish all the beach fun Pacific City offers. Neskowin Creek RV Resort – Neskowin www.soundpacificrv.com/neskowin-creek Tucked into a forest setting near the coast and the quiet community of Neskowin, this resort is rich with activities.
Neskowin Creek RV Resort
Walk the easily accessible nature trail and keep a lookout for seabirds. Take a swim or dip in the indoor pool and hot tub, both open year-round. Ramp up your heart rate on one of the sports courts. Wander along the freshwater creek with beautiful photo opportunities and relax with the friendly guests and staff. Amazing fishing is nearby, the beach less than a half-mile away and Chinook Winds Casino in nearby Lincoln City offers a fun night out. Note: Although this is a private campground, nonmembers are welcome to visit for three days to see if you’d like to join.
Hart's Camp
Pack your gear, bring the kids, the dog, your sweetheart, your parents, and make lifetime memories at these parks and campgrounds. Enjoy the magic of the ocean and road-tripping on the Tillamook Coast!

Sesame Snap Peas Less is more when it comes to snap peas, because they simply taste so good by themselves. Here's a simple recipe that allows the sweet, fresh snap pea to shine with just the subtle, nutty accompaniment of sesame oil and sesame seeds. Enjoy it with the sweet crunch of fresh, local, organic snap peas from Eloisa Organic Farm and Sunrise Organic Farm—these two new farms sprung up this year from Spring Hill Organic Farm whose founder Jamie Kitzrow recently retired. Now two groups of his former employees are carrying on the organic land and legacy that Spring Hill built. Look for their fresh, local, organic produce at the Co-op!
Ingredients: 1 lb sugar snap peas 1-2 tsp sesame oil 1 tsp sesame seeds (white or black) Sea salt to taste
Instructions: Remove the stem and the strings from each pea pod. Toss the peas in a bowl with remaining ingredients. Serve at room temperature.
Fresh fruits & vegetables, delivered direct to the Co-op from these new farms:

At Home
Home Sweet Home
By Heidi Powell As we have been adapting to how to do business during Covid-19, we’ve been able to reflect on our years of working in the Willamette Valley. Since 1990, we’ve been committed to designing and building the spaces of our clients’ dreams. We’ve seen a lot of changes in the area, been through a major recession, and enjoyed many good times too. This year has presented new challenges, that is for certain. But as in the past, our team is working through it and continuing to maintain the same standards of excellence and service we have always provided. We’ve all been home a little bit more than usual, and we realize now more than ever the importance and value of our homes. They are the place where we are safe, where our families have grown, and where we can forget about other things going on in the world. But some of us have also started to see things we want to change. Maybe as you are cooking at home more often, you’ve noticed that the walk from your fridge to your stove is just a little too long. Or maybe you’re wishing your home had a dedicated office space. Either way, we’re all starting to appreciate our houses in a different way and may want to modify them to fit our lifestyle. We are so excited about our new designs that are starting and look forward to watching them come to fruition. Now is the time to set up an appointment to begin planning for your home remodel. One might compare this time to a storm. We can hunker down and wait it out and hope that things will be easy on the other
side. Or we can press on, and use this time to strengthen our ship and make preparations for when it is over. We have been working on our processes and systems and fine tuning them to work even better in this changing environment. Adopting an online communication platform that allows us to work closely as a team, even when we aren’t together is just one of many ways that we are adapting to the ever-changing world. On our projects, our field crew is following guidelines to keep our clients safe and minimizing contact. We’ve set up hand washing stations and are making every effort to practice strict distancing practices. Through virtual meetings and other creative solutions our office staff is working through the design process. For those of you who are cautiously moving forward, you can be certain that we will continue to provide the best available service. Tom and I always say we are in the business of designing and building dreams. From design through construction, our team listens to the homeowners’ concerns and helps execute their vision. We coordinate various subcontractors and do our absolute best to provide a seamless construction process. For everyone, this year has presented a lot of new challenges. But that’s what serving a small community is all about, you are here during the good times and the bad. We’re weathering the storm, and we know that through extra care and diligence we as a company, along with our local community, will see our way through it.

PROFESSIONAL HELP: Tips from local leaders in their industry
Balance After Covid Such a strange time this has been – for everyone. We have all had our own unique experiences with this pandemic, whether at home on quarantine, or working even harder than before. Maybe both. I typically teach 8-10 Yoga and Pilates classes a week, wellness coach part time, and am a full- time mom. My days involve taking kids to school, sporting events, social events, and traveling to basketball tournaments on the weekends. Not to mention walking the dog, cooking, cleaning, and now with the spring, gardening. When the quarantine began, in all honesty, I took a deep breath, laid back, and rejoiced a little. I was being told to stay home, with my family!? And, those teens of mine were told to stay home with me! Ha! What a gift I was being given to have this extra time to spend with my girls at a time in their lives when being around friends tends to be their preference. I also felt a little guilty, knowing that not everyone was being allotted this time with their loved ones.

I knew that sitting around feeling guilty or fearful was not going to help me maintain the positive energy I knew my kids needed, in this very uncertain time. So, like many people, I got busy with home improvement projects. I decluttered everywhere, multiple times. I finished a garden path I had started many years ago. We gutted, cleaned, and transformed the garage into a game room where we have spent many family evenings enjoying ping pong and darts. I planted seeds. To maintain my teaching chops, I dove back into work on a YouTube channel that I had started a year ago. Creating these Yoga and Pilates classes has given me the opportunity to stay in shape while maintaining a connection to many of my students. I cannot emphasize enough how important mind/body exercises like Yoga and Pilates are at a time like this. At the time of writing this, I am still not yet teaching live classes. However, I will continue to teach via my YouTube channel, and offer wellness coaching online by creating meal and workout plans
for people to do and follow from home. Visit www.healthytothesoul.com for more information and access to my channel. So many aspects of our lives help us to be balanced mentally and physically. Our work, hobbies, time spent with loved ones, time spent alone, and taking care of our bodies and our surroundings are all part of keeping us whole. And, as we can see, anything can happen, and turn our worlds upside-down. Good self-care is of the utmost importance and can ultimately help see us through whatever may come our way. Thank you to everyone who stepped out of their comfort zones by going out and risking working through the unknown, wearing masks and social distancing, or finding other ways to serve the greater good. We are all bonded by this experience. Now that we have almost made it to the other side, let’s learn and grow from this, so we will all be a little better prepared. And I’m not talking paper products.

LOOKIN' GOOD
Things Are Different Now Navigating the New Normal By Cheryl Lohman
When the editor of this magazine asked us to share about what I did over the shut down or what would be different about my business due to COVID19, it took me back to my school days when we would share about what we did over the summer. Certainly I won’t share all the details of the rollercoaster…but here are a few highlights. •Eat, sleep, worry, pray, eat, sleep some more, (don’t get on the scales) •Worked on some business planning •Navigated the EIDL and PPP programs (eyes rolling) •Built a couple raised beds and planted a vegetable garden •Painted my kitchen
And now that we are returning to opening businesses, there are some changes my business will be doing going forward.
Safety is my #1 priority for my clients and myself. My industry already follows a high standard of sanitation to stop the spread of disease. Covid19 is now taking that to an even higher level including but not limited to: •Added thorough wellness screenings •One client at a time in the studio. •Extra sanitizing between clients •PPE to keep clients and I safe at all times •Consultations now done over the phone or through facetime or zoom. •Postponing lip procedures
What did you do over the shutdown? Did you enjoy not putting makeup on everyday? How would you like to experience that everyday and still look great like you were wearing makeup? Natural permanent makeup treatments are a great solution.
Now more than ever it’s important to look for an artist who will keep you safe. If you’d like to explore the possibility of permanent makeup, it is essential to have a consultation with a highly trained and qualified artist. This is not a service you want to bargain shop for and you will want to see actual photos of their work. Today, most professional permanent cosmetic artists are members of the world’s leading, not-for-profit society devoted to this field, the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP). This organization sets standards of practice for its members, which assures the public of the highest levels of professionalism and safety. After permanent makeup — you’ll be among those who enjoy a carefree natural look that last a long time.

PROFESSIONAL HELP: Tips from local leaders in their industry
Ask Annette
How IS the Market Doing? By Annette Sievert In good and not so great times, this question persists. But nowadays there is a different connotation to it as what is happening just does not have a precedent. I have been through many ups and downs, but they were always market issues, be it housing or credit markets. Too much or too little inventory, credit bubble… those were a few of the things we had to deal with, but they were always explainable with logic, and sort of predictable. No such thing this time. The reaction to the virus has been neither logical, nor predictable. A lot of people let fear control them, and the media hype certainly has not helped, breathlessly reporting numbers of infections and death that were never put in any context. So how has our market here reacted? Not much. One thing we noticed was a lack of inventory at a time when there were lots of listings coming up, in early spring. Late March and April were quiet but houses still sold. Mid May we started to see more inventory coming up and judging from the current sales, we are in a delayed but full spring swing. Properties are selling fast and often over asking. While there were sellers in April and beginning of May who insisted on masks and gloves, the trend is now to supply wipes and tolerate more normal showings, a decision that is wise, as it is rough for buyers to picture a cozy home for themselves when everybody is
pandemic clad. As things start to relax my impression is that we will have simply a delayed, but highly active selling year. So, if you are in the market to buy, nothing has changed. Be well prepared, have your pre-approval letter of preferably a local lender handy, expect multiple offer situations and be decisive. If you are selling, find the right price, listen when your broker gives you data and do not try to be smarter than the market. Overpricing is a bad strategy. Prepare your house well, ask to have it staged and professionally photographed. For out of town buyers who have a hard time being

here, namely because of the lack of flights, 3D tours are a great way to virtually walk through the house. I have seen a lot more buyers coming in-person now, be it via car or flights. This trend will continue, and I firmly believe that at the latest by July things will get back to much more normalcy. Corvallis always has had a special status. It pays off to buy here if you want stability. Stay well,

PROFESSIONAL HELP: Tips from local leaders in their industry
Don't Let Emotional Investing Cloud Your Judgement It’s important to maintain a level head in times of market turbulence. But that is often easier said than done, especially in the heat of market volatility. Even with the best intentions, investors can be challenged by their own bias and emotions. Emotional investing may be amplified during periods of market stress. But by understanding your emotions and biases, you can better avoid common pitfalls and keep yourself on track. Common investment biases fall into four major categories: • Overconfidence • Aversion to Loss • Anchoring • Pattern-seeking Behavior Overconfidence: Overconfidence implies that investors tend to overestimate their ability to generate a return and underestimate the risk associated with a particular investment. For example, imagine you are an investor who has recently had success picking winning shares. You may conclude that the success is due solely to your investment skill. That may be the case, but it's also possible the results were due to market forces outside of your control. The problem is that in either case, recent success may encourage you to take greater risks. While this could lead to greater profits, it's just as likely to result in greater losses. Herding mentality, which is the
tendency for investors to follow and copy what other investors are doing, also tends to distort near-term risks in up markets. Thus, investors can mistakenly discount the volatility and chance for loss as they seek to chase higher returns. Aversion to loss: Aversion to loss is innate. It is said that one feels the pain of a loss twice as strongly as the joy of a gain. In an attempt to minimize the pain associated with an investment loss, investors may be more prone to take action that can lead to the derailment of their long-term investment success. In market drawdowns, investors can be quick to react, selling stocks, and over-allocating to bonds or cash to avoid further losses and protect their nest eggs. Many investors sold down their stock funds in favor of bond funds and cash during the 2008/2009 financial crisis. Unfortunately, some of these investors missed out on the subsequent rallies that eventually took place and helped propel stocks to new highs. While it is tempting to move to the sidelines during times of market stress, investors may want to avoid over-allocating to cash and avoid locking in investment losses that they would not otherwise incorporate into their regular portfolio management activity. Importantly, if people maintain a well-diversified investment mix and own high-quality stocks and bonds, you should be able to stomach near-term
investment losses and ride out the eventual market cycles that come and go with time. Anchoring: Anchoring implies that investors tend to rely too heavily on specific information or lean on recent circumstances to make decisions. Our minds can "anchor" to information, and it's used as a reference point moving forward, regardless of relevancy. For example, investors may hang on to poor investments by waiting for the them to break even at the price at which it was purchased. If you’re trying to decide whether to sell or hold a stock, are you basing your decision on what you know about the company and the state of the market, or are you basing your target price on the purchase price or other measures that may be less relevant to the stock’s future course? It’s important that investors accept that market circumstances routinely change, sometimes suddenly. Investors can adjust to new market developments by seeking objective information, leaning on a financial advisor for sound advice, and setting realistic assumptions. Pattern-seeking behavior: Pattern-seeking behavior describes our brain's desire to seek out ways to compartmentalize the flow of information and find patterns that help us make sense of the world quickly. Since our brain is hardwired to do this, investors

can mistakenly believe they see patterns in market trends that prove false. Since the future can be unpredictable, and patterns are not always present, investors may want to incorporate the following: • Establish realistic expectations for your portfolio, both from a return and risk perspective. • Expect markets to move in unpredictable ways, particularly during periods of market stress. • While the near-term is unpredictable, generally, stocks move up and to the right over the long-term. • Society is aging, and growth is slower. That means the patterns of the past may be harder to apply to the future, or possibly, not relevant. Truly understanding your risk tolerance and your threshold for loss can go a long way in helping you maintain a level head during times of market stress. If you suspect your personal investing bias and emotions are interfering with your investment decisions, defer to the experts. Together you can look for opportunities to grow your investments through disciplined investing strategies.

STYLE GUIDE
PROFESSIONAL HELP: Tips from local leaders in their industry
How to Wear a Mask… With Style. By Oscar B. Hult As Oregon starts into phase 1 and 2 of reopening our economy here are some thoughts about looking stylish, or at least not too foolish wearing your mask. Should your mask match, complement or contrast with your outfit? Are you aiming for a smart or casual aesthetic? what mask should you wear at work? Is there ever a time for masks with graphics on them? What do I do with my mask when I’m not required to wear it? If any of these questions leave you feeling a bit unsure, read on to wear your mask with panache. If you are someone who wants to look their best and wonder how the mask you must wear at work will make you look to your clients and coworkers. Then I have a few sartorial suggestions for you. Choose your mask like you would any other accessory. It needs to harmonize with the rest of your outfit. Think of it like a pocket square… A pocket mask if you will. Tonal monochrome shades work well for masks teamed with black or grey suits, for instance, while a vibrant pop of color adds interest to crisp blue suits, particularly in summer. Speaking of suits (and sport coats) remember your mask can be worn as a pocket square when you don’t need it on your face. It will keep it clean, neat and at the ready when a client or co-worker walks in. A mask that is predominately white
with either a colored edging or light pattern provides a relatively conservative look that will work in most business environments, but to really stand out, your accessories make all the difference. The mask you wear should complement the rest of your look: either by harmonizing or contrasting with your other accessories. If your tie has a pattern or print, for example, then pick a color from that palette to bring your look together and wear a mask of that goes with it. Equally, you could choose a mask that is a shade lighter or darker than the core color of your ensemble. Remember, it’s all in the detail, so don’t be afraid to bring out an accent color on a subtle pinstripe or checked shirt. Alternatively, if you work in a more relaxed setting and want to make your mask the focal point of your look then you can experiment with vibrant colors, eclectic prints, and yes maybe even a silly graphic. If you work at a place where you are required to wear a uniform, your mask should reflect the company’s brand image. If your uniform is a dark blue with a red logo, then a solid red or blue mask would probably be the best choices for a professional look. Below is a handy guide when choosing your pocket mask: • Choose a secondary color from your shirt or tie as the primary color for your pocket mask. • Ensure that your pocket mask is of colors which will harmonize with your clothing. • Don’t directly match your tie and pocket mask.
www.facebook.com/thenattydresser
Oscar • For the most part white (or off white) pocket masks work all combinations and colors so you can never really go wrong. Often a wedding is when all gentlemen like to look their Sunday best. Even for those not normally known for their elegant dress sense, it is one of the few times each year they will be prepared to make a concerted effort. With new social distancing protocols in place, a mask should at least be at the ready. However, this is NOT the place to wear a gawdy graphic design on your mask. You should always avoid wearing something that will take the focus from the happy couple. Keep it simple and Just slip it into the chest pocket of your jacket where it will be handy when it’s time to congratulate the bride and groom.

By Brenda Powell First, we are very thankful and blessed that we were able to remain open for business during the stay at home order, as we are considered an essential business selling edible crops. We are grateful to all our customers, old and new, who braved a visit to our store or ordered items online for curbside pick-up. We have seen an increase in gardening, especially growing your own food, during the last several months. For many, gardening is beneficial. It can provide exercise, connection to nature, a sense of calm and peace, a learning activity for all ages, and, if you grow you own food, the shortest distance from farm to table. As we navigated new restrictions and changes to the way we normally do business, we faced many challenges and frustrations. Thank you for your patience as we continue to adapt. We saw and most likely will continue to see, shortages in product and variety, rationing, and differences in customer service. Some of our suppliers no longer accept orders over the telephone. A good example of other alterations is demonstrated by our seed companies. We carry four brands of vegetable and flower seeds on racks in our store. Two of our seed rack suppliers shut down for several weeks in April to regroup as they had sold out of their packaged seed inventory. Although these two companies are shipping again, the selection is more limited and from one of them there are limits on quantity and frequency of ordering. One of the two is now selling from their 2021 inventory. A third seed company decided to be done for the season and focus on 2021, which for seed companies generally starts in late summer 2020. The fourth company we have not been able to get ahold of nor have they restocked their rack yet this season. Thankfully, currently we do have a good selection on the two racks from which we are able to reorder. Holding in person classes and events is not an option until possibly the fall. We will not be holding our annual Art and Wine
