Appeal ‘The numbers of people who consume music is of no interest to me. The mass adds nothing to art.’ Igor Stravinsky

Westerbork

Former WWII concentration camp [‘Durchgangslager’]. Out of 107.000 people that were put on transport from Westerbork to extermination camps in ‘the east’, 102.000 never returned. One of them was called Anne Frank.

Wait for me ‘Wait for me, and I’ll return — only wait very hard; Wait until you are filled with sorrow as you watch the yellow rain; Wait when the wind sweeps the snowdrifts; Wait in the sweltering heat; Wait when others have stopped waiting, forgetting their yesterdays; Wait when even from afar no letters come to you; Wait even when others are tired of waiting; Wait even when my mother and son think I am no more; And when friends sit around the fire drinking to my memory, Wait, and do not hurry to drink to my memory too; Wait, for I’ll return, defying every death; And let those who do not wait say I was lucky; They will never understand that, in the midst of death, You, with your waiting, saved me; Only you and I will know how I survived — It’s because you waited as no one else did.’ Konstantin Simonov [Russian war poet], 1941

REMNANTS OF THE FORMER CAMP

Vox populi ‘Naturally, the common people don’t want war. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a parliament or a communist dictatorship.’ ‘Democracy is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to greater danger. It works the same way in any country.’ Hermann Göring at the Nuremberg tribunal, 1946

Sophistication ‘Riding horseback along a country lane I saw wild roses in bloom, against an old stone wall. The expensive, improved varieties in my garden have lost something. Sophistication always does.’ James Webb Young, 1943

Peenem端nde

Peenemünde, on the Baltic island of Usedom, was the facility where the Nazi regime conducted research into ballistic missiles. After the war their scientists (a.o. Wernher von Braun) escaped prosecution by being ‘transferred’ to the USA and the USSR. Thus Peenemünde became ground zero for the armament race during the cold war as well as for space exploration and the moon landings.

Prora

On the shore of the isle of Rügen stands the building of Prora or, as it is officially known, ‘Kraft durch Freude Seebad’. This ‘colossus’ [the local nickname], six floors tall and a staggering 4,5 kilometers long, was where the Nazis wanted to send people on holiday so their cannon fodder would arrive at the front well-rested and with a tan. Some 75 years after it was built, it still defiantly stands there as a bleak reminder of fascist megalomania.
