INTRODUCTION

BUILDING DESCRIPTION New construction of a High-Rise Mixed-Use Development named Tower Crossroads to be located at 1801 Main Street Kansas City, Missouri. The project includes 5 levels of subterranean vehicle parking, 1 level featuring a restaurant retail shop and facility support areas, 2 levels including office space, equipment and fabrication areas, 15 levels of open office space. This document describes the general expectations of the Fire Protection systems for this project.

NFPA 72 Installation of Fire Alarm Systems

1. SYSTEM AND REPORT •

High-rise buildings shall be provided with an automatic smoke detection system and an emergency voice/alarm communication system

Smoke detectors shall be connected to an automatic fire alarm system that will activate the emergency voice/alarm system

Emergency voice/alarm communication system shall be designed and installed in accordance with NFPA 72. The operation of any automatic fire detector, sprinkler water flow or manual fire alarm box shall automatically sound an alert tone followed by voice instructions giving approved information and directions for evacuation. Speakers shall be provided throughout the building by paging zones at minimum provided as follows: I. Elevator II. Exit stairways III. Each floor

1. SYSTEM TYPES Sprinkler system requirements shall be governed by NFPA 13 CHAPTER 7 SYSTEM REQUIRMENTS a)

A wet sprinkler system shall be placed per IBC 2012 and installed with accordance to NFPA 13 on all floors above the finished grade.

b)

A dry sprinkler system shall be placed in the closed parking garage per IBC 2012 and installed in accordance with NFPA 13 on all parking areas located below the finished grade.

2. UTILITY INFORMATION a) Per 403.3.1 Number of sprinkler risers and system design Each sprinkler system zone in buildings that are more than 420 feet in building height shall be supplied by no fewer than two risers. The height of our structure is significantly less than the codes requirement therefore there shall be only one incoming utility connection required.


b) The incoming connection shall be one 6-inch line to supply the sprinkler and standpipe system. The fire sprinkler and standpipe utility connections will be shared. 3. HAZARD CLASSIFICATION All public/common areas shall be classified per NFPA 13 CHAPTER 5 CLASSIFICATION OF OCCUPANCIES AND COMMODITIES a) 5.2 Light Hazard Occupancies. Light hazard occupancies shall be defined as occupancies or portions of other occupancies where the quantity and/or combustibility of contents is low and fires with relatively low rates of heat release are expected. (Office spaces, common areas etc.) b) 5.3.1 Ordinary Hazard (Group 1). 5.3.1.1 Ordinary hazard (Group 1) occupancies shall be defined as occupancies or portions of other occupancies where combustibility is low, quantity of combustibles is moderate, stockpiles of combustibles do not exceed 8 ft (2.4 m), and fires with moderate rates of heat release are expected. (Kitchen, mechanical room, etc.) c) 5.3.2.1 Ordinary hazard (Group 2) occupancies shall be defined as occupancies or portions of other occupancies where the quantity and combustibility of contents are moderate to high, stockpiles of contents with moderate rates of heat release do not exceed 12 ft (3.66 m), and stockpiles of contents with high rates of heat release do not exceed 8 ft (2.4 m). d) 4. Sprinkler Types The use and application of sprinkler types shall be governed by NFPA 13 INSTALLATION REQUIRMENTS. 8.4.1 Standard Upright and Pendent Spray Sprinklers. 8.4.1.1 Upright and pendent spray sprinklers shall be permitted in all occupancy hazard classifications and building construction types. Standard Spray Pendant Sprinklers K5.6 shall be installed wherever a dropped in ceiling occurs within the structure. Standard Spray Upright Sprinklers shall be installed whenever an exposed ceiling exists (lacking a dropped in ceiling). 5. PIPE AND TANK INFORMATION A Fire pump that is capable of handling 171.1 GPM at 57.6 PSI shall be installed in the Fire Pump Room located on the 1st floor. All necessary requirements and installation shall comply with NFPA 20. 6. FIRE STANDPIPE TYPE AND INFORMATION The fire standpipe type shall be an Automatic, Wet standpipe system with type Class I hose connections. All necessary requirements and installation shall comply with NFPA 14.

APPENDIX A FIRE MODEL CODE AND STANDARD REFERENCES The fire package in the fire model consisted of two couches on two sides of the room. Due to the small dimensions of the space and the fire package a ramped function was used in order to elicit heat release rate. This heat release rate was further broken down into the three types of heat transfer, convection, conduction and radiation, to show minimum evacuation time versus temperature that would allow a person to exit the room safely. This tenability criteria according to SFPE handbook a room becomes untenable when the following occur: -

Temperature exceeds 250°F

The heat flux exceeds 2.5 kW/m2

Minimum Oxygen level of 19%


PERFORMANCE GOALS An addition temperature thermocouple was added closure to the couch. The chart below displays the resulting temperature of the model over an elapsed time of 200 seconds.
