PROJECT BRIEF STUDIO WILDE 509 WORKED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE CITY OF LAWRENCE TO DEVELOP A NEW DESIGN STANDARD FOR THEIR STANDALONE BATHROOMS. THIS PROJECT WILL HAVE ABROAD IMPACT ACROSS THE CITY AND THE SUCCESS OF OUR PROJECT WOULD MEAN THAT MANY MORE BATHROOMS USING OUR DESIGN WOULD CONTINUE TO BE BUILT IN SPORT COMPLEXES AND PARKS THROUGHOUT THE CITY. OUR PROJECT IS LOCATED AT THE YOUTH SPORTS COMPLEX AT 4911 W

SOME OF THE DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS INCLUDED: 1. MAINTENANCE AND LONGEVITY OF THE BUILDINGS AND MATERIALS 2. TAMPER-PROOF AND SECURITY TO PREVENT VANDALISM 3. CONSTRUCTABILITY IN TERMS OF FUTURE CITY DEVELOPMENT 4. A BOTH POETIC AND UTILITARIAN DESIGN THAT BECOMES PART OF THE SURROUNDING KANSAS LANDSCAPE 5. HOW TO DESIGN FOR NATURAL LIGHT AND VENTILATION


SCHEMATIC DESIGN

DURING THE SCHEMATIC PHASE WE EXPLORED VARIOUS BUILDING METHODS AND RESPONDED TO THE CRITERIA IDENTIFIED BY OUR CLIENT, THE CITY OF LAWRENCE. OUR INITIAL SCOPE OF WORK WAS TO COMPLETE THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A STAND-ALONE BATHROOM WITH ONE

DURING THE DESIGN PHASE OUR SCOPE OF WORK WAS ALTERED DUE TO CITY BUDGET CONSTRAINTS AND THE CLIENT’S NEED TO RELOCATE THE PROJECT TO A LESS CONGESTED LOCATION ON SITE. OUR NEW CONCEPT WAS A PREFABRICATED BATHROOM THAT CONSISTED OF THREE MAIN COMPONENTS: THE UTILITY CORE, THE WALL AND THE ROOF ASSEMBLIES. THE UTILITY CORE WAS A MODULAR CONCEPT THE COULD BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE MORE UTILITY CLOSETS AND URINALS FOR SITES THAT HAVE HIGH POPULATION DENSITIES. THE ROOF AND WALL ASSEMBLIES WERE

IN LATE OCTOBER, WE PRESENTED OUR NEW PREFABRICATED CONCEPT WITH A PROPOSED BUDGET OF $7500 FOR ONE UNISEX BATHROOM TO THE CITY WAS RECEIVED WELL AND THE PROJECT WAS GIVEN THE GREEN-LIGHT. A TIME LINE FOR COMPLETION WAS GENERATED WITH A PROPOSED END DATE IN THE SPRING OF 2016. TO MEET OUR EXPEDITE DEADLINE OUR CLASS SPLIT INTO SEVERAL TEAMS INCLUDING: WALL ASSEMBLY,

THE WALL ASSEMBLY WAS CONSTRUCTED OF 4X8 PLYWOOD WITH FOAM INSULATION. EACH SECTION WAS CONNECTED TOGETHER THEN SET ON THE UTILITY CORE. FOR VENTILATION HOLES WITH SCREENS WERE STRATEGICALLY PLACE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE HIGH WINDS IN KANSAS. THE STRUCTURE’S HEIGHT TAKES ADVANTAGE OF BUOYANCY EFFECT, INTRODUCING COOL AIR THROUGH THE VENT AND HOT AIR ESCAPING OUT OF THE CLEAR-STORY. A SOLAR ANALYSIS WAS SIMULATED TO POSITION THE BATHROOM TO TAKE ADVANTAGE O F THE NATURAL LIGHT. THE CONCRETE SINK WAS DEVELOPED THROUGH MANY ITERATIONS WITH

THE RAIN SCREEN CLADDING WAS FABRICATED USING RECLAIMED WOOD FROM THE CITY OF LAWRENCE. WALNUT AND WHITE OAK WERE SELECTED FOR THE SCREEN WHICH WAS ATTACHED TO THE WALLS BY FURRING STRIPS. THE STEEL TRUSS ASSEMBLY WOULD FEATURE DOUBLE WALLED POLYCARBONATE FOR THE CLEAR STORY. THE CHASE DOOR WAS MEANT TO BLEND INTO THE EXTERIOR BY RUNNING THE SCREEN SEAMLESSLY OVER THE DOOR EXCEPT FOR THE LOCK HOLE.
