Red Sparrow 1st, In Cinemas Jennifer Lawrence stars as Ballerina Dominika Egrova who is recruited to Sparrow School, a Russian Intelligence service where she is forced to turn her body into a weapon and sent on a mission targeting a CIA agent. Based on a 2013 novel by CIA operative Jason Matthews, which is the first in a trilogy so the studio will eagerly be watching those box office receipts.
Happy Family 2nd, In Cinemas Based on a short 4D cinema/ride at Wookey Hole (yes, that Wookey Hole) and named ‘Monster Family’ in the US, ‘Happy Family’ is an animated comedy where a family, who are trying to reconnect with each other, are transformed on a night out into monsters by an evil witch. The impressive voice cast includes Emily Watson, Jason Isaacs, Nick Frost, Celia Imrie and Catherine Tate.
Game Night 2nd, In Cinemas This action comedy from directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein sees a group of friends who meet up regularly for game nights and find themselves in the middle of a real life murder mystery. Jesse Plemons, Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman star and, judging by the trailer that made me laugh out loud several times, should be both a thrilling and hilarious night out.
You Were Never Really Here 9th, In Cinemas A traumatized veteran tracks down missing girls for a living but when a job spins out of control, nightmares overtake him and a conspiracy is uncovered. Adapted from a 2013 novella by Jonathan Ames and starring Joaquin Phoenix, the film received a seven-minute standing ovation when an unfinished version premiered at Cannes and it won the Best Screenplay and Best Actor awards.

Eat. Pray. Soup So I found myself on Muesli Hill as they call it, aka Hanover, on a dark February day in need of sustenance and refuge. I was told to seek out the Village when in the area, that I did. Previously a boozer (Horse & Groom) but has been reclaimed. As I approached the door I was not sure it was open but once inside I discovered a veritable oasis. The staff were super attentive and friendly. The interior is as about as eclectic as you could get as the owners have collected and collated furniture, knickknacks, pictures and more. They offer an extensive brunch menu 9am-4pm daily, but not today for me as I chose the lentil and vegetable soup and a glass of water. I settled on a large table that could seat at least 10 people. Shortly other patrons joined me with a quick “do you mind”, absolutely. The soup arrived, a good-sized ceramic bowl, with crusty bread (Real Patisserie). From the first spoonful I knew this would be good. The vegetables still had bite and complimented the lentils and I am not a fan normally of these little pulses. The broth and the spices they used hit you subtly bringing the soup together. Spoon after spoon I lapped it up with mouthfuls of the crusty bread in between. I was pushed to finish it - at £5 it was good value - and very much satisfied. Honestly I rarely order soup out but I wish I could make soup like this. As you look around the Village you realise that the people who’ve discovered this gem know they have found something special and it bubbles with a feeling of community. They are open at night with comedy, acoustic and spoken word. They only serve food during the days but in the evenings allow and recommend you to order take in. They even serve booze, what’s not to like.

Sat 24th The Volks Back with a bang for their first date of 2018, heavyweight dubstep collective The Mine, present a live (and rather multicultural!) set from Croatia’s Egoless, Germany’s Bukez Finezt, Six Sunsets, with Lithuania and exotic Bournemouth represented in the basement by 30Hz and Overlook respectively. Bassweight, Grime, Jungle, and dark and wonky vibes from top dogs until silly hours, ensuring Sunday’s a write off. volksclub.co.uk
Rollin’ Dynamite
Fri 30th The Mesmerist Your honourable host DJ Ralph ‘Ratman’ and his guests play vinyl 45s for your listening pleasure at this free club night at the swanky joint just by Brighton Town Hall, The Mesmerist. Rockabilly, rock’n’roll, savage blues, RnB and ‘explosive’ instrumentals all get an airing. If you revel in the retro and like your rock wild and raucous, you’ll feel right at home here. mesmerist.pub
