HEARTPUMPING INFLATION Princes Highway is a main corridor between Melbourne City and southwest parts. The traffic flow is enormous and there are traffic jams in every rush hour. The highway itself does not provide chances for drivers to experience differently. By having this project built on site, it is expected to provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the energetic Melbourne City as well as a warm welcome from the heart of Melbourne. The design definition of our team is ‘Tessellation’, which fundamentally is the process of creating a complex surface by using the repetition of elements. Our approach is to capturing the movement and power of heart pumping, via the idea of inflation. This design will provide an excitement for first arrival impression, driving experience as well as the after-moment memory. Through the application of parametric modelling technologies, the installation is going to excite the visitors with innovation and unpredictability. Two plugins were used namely kangaroo and panelling tool. Unique elements on the surface are the key point of our design. In order to create the lumpiness of the surface, forces are applied on those modules by using kangaroo. After having the satisfied objects, we generated these elements into a self-standing structure. Panelling tool was used for searching a better distribution of elements. We wish to provide a feeling of excitement and dynamicity through the expression of the Gateway project installation, to introduce a ‘small pump’ as the starting of your fantastic journey in Melbourne City.

The design definition of our team is ‘Tessellation’, which fundamentally is the process of creating a complex surface by using the repetition of elements. Our approach is to present the idea of heart-pumping motion. This design will provide an excitement for first arrival impression, driving experience as well as the after-moment memory. Through the application of parametric modelling technologies, the installation is going to excite the visitors with innovation and unpredictability. In order to achieve the idea of exploring the movement in living organisms, a movable and operable structure is introduced by using a non-fixed joint for connecting elements. The gaps that formed by the elements could expand or contracted through the forces applied. In this way, seems like every elements within the system are full of life and energy. A diamond gird was used in this approach as it gives the allowance of movement. After having the gird, modules were placed on to the connection joint of two gird. By controlling the gird, the objects could reshape itself through the movement of gird. Another way to achieve the target is to use repetition of a diamond formed by panels. Light and shadow experience was conducted to test the ever-changing shape of light and shadow.
