SEPTEMBER, 1978:JAY GRANT ARRIVED AT WILLISTON NORTHAMPTON SCHOOL A GRADUATE OF SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE AND WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY, HE WAS THE SCHOOL'S FIRST FULL TIME ATHLETIC TRAINER AND HE LIVED IN THE APARTMENT ABOVE THE INFIRMARY. SEPTEMBER,1979:ELIZABETH ODELL CAME TO WILLISTON TO TEACH SPANISH AND LIVED IN WILLISTON COTTAGE (185 MAIN STREET). SHE WAS A GRADUATE OF SUNY ALBANY.JUNE,1979: A ROMANCE SPARKED, ONE THAT WOULD LEAD TO A WEDDING IN WILLISTON'S CHAPEL,TO TWO WILLISTON ALUMNI CHILDREN OF THEIR OWN, COUNTLESS FAMILY TRIPS ACROSS THE COUNTRY,AND A TOTAL OF OVER 70 COMBINED YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE SCHOOL.
JAY STARTED HIS WILLISTON CAREER IN THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT AND HAS BEEN A DEDICATED PROFESSIONAL THERE EVER SINCE. KNOWN FOR HIS DRY SENSE OF HUMOR,HIS CONSISTENCY AND STEADY DEMEANOR,AND HIS DEDICATION TO BOTH THE DEPARTMENT AND HIS OWN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, HE QUICKLY BECAME A RESPECTED RESOURCE AND A TRUSTED FACULTY MEMBER FOR BOTH STUDENTS AND FACULTY. HE PRIORITIZED EDUCATION EACH YEAR AND BECAME A LEADING EXPERT ON HEAD INJURIES, HELPING TO EDUCATE COLLEAGUES AND FAMILIES ABOUT THIS IMPORTANT TOPIC. A FAMILY MAN FIRST, SOME REMEMBER JAY HAVING A PLAY PEN IN HIS OFFICE WHILE CONSULTING WITH STUDENTS ABOUT INJURIES AND MAKING SURE GAME DAYS — HIS FAVORITE DAYS — RAN SMOOTHLY. BE IT AS AN ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATOR, HOCKEY COACI-i, ATHLETIC TRAINER,EQUIPMENT MANAGER OR JUST A RELIABLE COMMUNITY MEMBER,JAY HAS WORKED CLOSELY WITH JUST ABOUT EVERY WILLISTON NORTHAMPTON STUDENT FOR THE LAST 38 YEARS.
SINCE ARRIVING ON CAMPUS, BETSY HAS PROVIDED WILLISTON STUDENTS WITH AN ENERGETIC AND ENCOURAGING CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT. As DEAN OF FACULTY PETER VALINE SAID OF THIS 2013 KARIN O'NEIL INSTRUCTORSHIP RECIPIENT,"HER STUDENTS ARRIVE IN CLASS EACH DAY KNOWING THAT HER DEMEANOR WILL BE STEADY,BOTH POSITIVE AND UPBEAT. SHE HELPS STUDENTS ACHIEVE MASTERY BY APPEALING TO DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLES WITH A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES IN EACH CLASS...SHE POSSESSES THE ENTHUSIASM TO EXCITE HER STUDENTS AND THE PATIENCE NECESSARY TO ALLOW THEM TO GROW." LIKE JAY, BETSY HAS DEDICATED HERSELF TO PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGHOUT HER CAREER, PARTICIPATING IN NUMEROUS WORKSHOPS,CONFERENCES AND EVEN TWO IMMERSION PROGRAMS (IN SPAIN AND IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC)TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE SPANISH CULTURE AND LANGUAGE.IN ADDITION TO TEACHING LANGUAGES,BETSY ALSO SPENT TIME AS THE LOG ADVISOR, A HEAD DORM PARENT, SHE RAN THE SCHOOL SPORTS STORE, COACHED SAILING AND RIDING, AND WAS INVOLVED IN THE OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM.
AT THE END OF THIS YEAR, BOTH OF THESE VETERAN FACULTY MEMBERS WILL RETIRE. FOR DECADES THEY HAVE EMBODIED THE BEST OF WILLISTON AND WILL TRULY BE MISSED IN OUR COMMUNITY. IT IS WITH GREAT APPRECIATION AND THANKS THAT WE,THE CLASS OF 2016, DEDICATE OUR SENIOR YEARBOOK TO MR.JAY AND MRS. BETSY GRANT. THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU'VE DONE;YOU'RE AN INSPIRATION TO ALL AND WE WISH YOU THE BEST FOR YOUR RETIREMENT.
JAY AND COACH RICK FRANCIS HELP AN INJURED
"To Jay Grant on behalf of the faculty and their families, many thanks for your frequent diagnoses and treatment of our injuries, your encouragement of our children as they tried 'pew athletic ventures, d your consistent and "se counsel on all m tters. You were alvlays approachable and reliable, and we appreciate your service as a willing and trusted resource for the entire Williston community."
- Submitted by Peter Valine
"A big thanks to our parents for the opportunity to grow up in the Williston community, surrounded by educators and students from all over the world. We love you!" - Jill '11 and Sam '08 Grant
"[Mrs. Grant] was always there for me in Spanish 3! Whenever I needed extra help she was more than willing to sit down and talk me through all the steps of the preterit stem changes or any other piece of grammar again and again even if she had just taught the same thing to me the day before. She always made the classroom feel like a comfortable, safe, nurturing and fun environment to learn something that was difficult to comprehend for me!" -Ben King '15
"I was an athletic trainer right of college and Jay had his hands full taking me under his wing. With that said, he always had confidence in me,trusted me and most of all listened to my non-stop talking. It is evident he is the most genuine person you will ever meet. Jay is a family man, who happens to be a runner because it's good for you. He also enjoys baseball, Far Side Comics, baseball, Orange Crush, soda, baseball, the Patriots and yes, the Boston Red Sox. He is known at the dining hall table for his lunch choice of peanut butter jelly sandwiches and on special occasions, tomato soup and grilled cheese. I would have to say that Jay can be summed up in his "go-to" meals of choice. Tried and true, classic, dependable, straight forward and they never let you down. Unlike those meals though, he is one of a kind and he will be greatly missed." - Melissa Brousseau
WFFN MA rr DELGuIDICI. "As a teacher, Mrs. Grant inspired her students by her knowledge and enthusiasm for the Spanish language as well as the culture. She was also legendary for Dunkin munchkins on the first Saturday classes of the trimester. As an adviser, Mrs. Grant not only attended at least one game each trimester for all of her advises, but made herself available for a conversation, advice, or guidance. From all us that had Mrs. Grant, a big thank you and buena suerte!" - Julia Valine '15
"I have had the privilege of knowing and working with Jay for over 25 years. Jay approaches every injury and attends to any athletic situation with a calm, unwavering, unflappable approach (with the minor exception of loud music being played in the gym- sorry about that Jay!). Jay's devotion to every student and colleague is what has helped make Williston the wonderful community that it is. Williston has been lucky to have him for so long. We will not be the same without him. I wish him and Betsy nothing but the best in their retirements. Safe travels." - Janine Whipple
"Betsy Grant is living proof that a person can be genuinely kind and keenly intelligent. I can't think of anything more comforting, or helpful, than having a conversation with Betsy: she will listen to and empathize with your situation, then gently pass on some profoundly thoughtful and practical advice. For three decades Betsy's professionalism, collegiality and total dedication to teaching have brought purpose, passion and integrity to the Language Department; her inspiring example and positive influence will live on long after her retirement." - Beatrice Cody
"I could not have asked for a better colleague and associate to work with for these past 16 years. Jay brings a wonderful balance of professionalism, dedication, a love of working with kids, a passion for athletics, incredible reliability and a great dry sense of humor. He has always been a champion of the experience of every kid who played athletics at Williston....no matter if they were a star varsity athlete or a novice. As an athletic trainer, they simply do not come any better. His calm demeanor, experience, expertise and relationship with each kid makes him exceptional in this profession. Without fail, he approached the care and well-being of every kid as if they were his own son or daughter." - Mark Conroy
"I'll always remember Jay drinking cases of Orange Crush Soda-the students thought that is why he hair stayed red for so long! We worked together on several projects: we developed the Middle School Physical Education Curriculum in 1982-1983; he let me teach him field hockey so that he could teach the middle school classes. But most importantly, no matter how long a day Jay had had, he was always willing to chat with me about an injured athlete after practice(and the field hockey team was often the last to come in from Galbraith field)." - Ann Pickrell
"Betsy was my mentor when I first came to Williston and continued to be a great one. I remember when we met up for the first time before new faculty orientation at Shelburne Falls (the coffee place in Easthampton, not the town 40 minutes away). She worked with me for a long while answering any and all questions I had. Her guidance was so supportive and consistent that I never once hesitated to ask her about something. We would always share great family stories of exploring new places, and I'm so excited that she and Jay will explore the rest of the US after teaching. I am so blessed to have had her as a mentor and to work side by side with her in the Language Department. Merci, Betsy!" - Adeleen Brown
"Betsy has been a role model for many teachers and an excellent educator for the students during all her years
She always knows the needs of all her students and works closely with them to maximize their potential. As a colleague, she always was a person to talk to and she took care of all of us. We will miss her baking, her help and especially her presence in the department." - Eugenio Garcia
"Betsy is always the earliest faculty member to arrive, before 7am daily. She is also one of the fastest talkers I have ever known,in any language. She gives more extra help than anyone I've met and she's renown for her 'rewrite system" as well as class Saturday am munchkins! She's the 'mother' of our department — she's the one that happily provides us(and hungry students!) with snacks of all kind (dried berries/mangoes are faves). Need a band-aid? Tylenol? A nail file, or a miniature screwdriver? She's got it — and more." - Sue Michalski

Mountains, biases, passions, and cake—from following Chris Waddell's journey up Mt. Kilimanjaro to exploring our own journey here at Williston, Founder's Day was certainly a day (or week) to remember! Whether the day was spent dancing away to Love Lock Down by Kanye West, cooking up a storm, serving the greater Easthampton Community, or learning about "girl on girl crime," everyone walked away having learned something new and meaningful. Remember Waddell's motto, It's not what happens to you, it's what you do with what happens to you". Happy 175th Williston!

Williston's dodgeball tournament started in 2012 after the passing of Al LaValle- a beloved member of the Williston community. His son,Justin LaValle, used to work at the cage and now works with our Physcial Plant staff. Now,the dodgeball tournament that started in honor of Mr.LaValle, has become a fun tradition that all of Williston looks forward to. The tournament is about coming together, respectfully competeing, and having fun together.

You are a trail blazer for sure, never afraid to take on a challenge. As you embark on this next journey of your life, Roger Bason once said "Keep in mind that I neither success nor failure is ever final." You will follow your passions and dreams knowing that your family will be your greatest cheerleaders. We will be there for you always. So enjoy this time of celebration.

Connor: Four years ago you once again took charge of your educational path—you announced you wanted to go to boarding school. You said boarding school would challenge you academically, push you to try new things and test your capacity to make a difference in a true community.
Four years later, you have achieved your goals and so much more! You pushed yourself to excellence in the classroom, and you became a football player and a long jumper. You discovered a gift for mentoring those younger than yourself. "Homesick whisperer." Serving in student council, giving tours and proctoring, you developed into a leader.
You have taken much from your Williston experience, becoming an accomplished and admirable young man. And as importantly, you have given much back to the Williston community and beyond.
We are immensely proud of you and hope you are proud of yourself. Remember: no one can "befeat you," and "the camera loves you, bubba!" And always "do your best and have fun!"

Dear Seniors,
I present to you this years edition of The Log. Building a book from scratch was no easy task. Many hours of hard work went into this yearbook. It was great fun to look through many pictures and memories Williston created for us all. At times it became very stressful but, creating a yearbook would have been nearly impossible without help from a few people who deserve recognition.
First, I would like to thank Mrs. Garrity. Without whom, you would not be reading this right now. Her hours of effort and hard work made the whole book possible. She remained a positive hardworking, determined leader, throughout the entire process. Thank you!
Abbie Foster played another very key role in this years staff. She was always eager to help and never complained once. She is responsible for creating so many great pages in the book.I wouldn't have been able to do it without her.
Izzy Tegtmeyer, Lauren Helm,& Bryan Bates were three people who took on large roles within the book and really turned nothing into something. Their hard work did not go unnoticed. I would also like to note that without their humor and laughter, Saturday morning brunch meetings would have felt much longer.
To the entire Log Staff: each one of you has helped make the book what it is. I cannot thank you all enough for your tireless effort and enthusiastic spirit throughout the whole year. You have made this process enjoyable and much easier than it would have been without you. Thanks again.
To the Class of 2016: Our years at Williston have flown by all too quickly. On my first day here, the thought of graduating seemed so far away. I went about my days eating more Tandem than I should have and thinking I would always be a student at Williston.
We have watched many seniors shake Mr. Hill's hand, wave their diploma, and walk off stage, ready to start a new chapter in their lives. Now,it is time for us to do the same.It seems surreal.
Congratulations to each one of you on all that you have accomplished throughout your career at Williston. We should all be very proud of ourselves. I am excited to see where each of us ends up in life and I look forward to the future knowing that it is bright for all of us. We are athletes, we are artists, we are scholars, we are friends, and most of all we are the class of 2016. I hope to see all of you at our many class reunions.
Thank you all for making my time at Williston incredibly memorable.I have so many fond memories of playing sports and being in the classroom with all of you. I will miss Williston and its entire people dearly.
Good luck to all of you wherever life may take you.

Dear Class of 2016,
As I write my annual letter to seniors for the The Log, this year carries a special message; after all, yours is the 175th class to graduate from the Williston Northampton School. Your class will forever be tied to a year of retrospection on the one hand and celebration on the other.
Remember the opening of school gala dance with a balloon drop in the athletic center and DJ Steve Porter spinning the tunes? Remember our Founders Day speaker who challenged us to live by the motto "It's not what happens to you. It's what you do with what happens to you" as he narrated his attempt to bike up Mt. Kilimanjaro as the most decorated US Paralympian? Remember the holiday banquet and the sing along at my house after ridiculously good chocolate covered strawberries? All of you are forever linked by these and myriad other memories of this special place. You have made friendships that will, literally, last a life time.
Of course, each of you has been tested in your time at Williston. You have responded to challenges outside of your control and also willingly challenged yourself to achieve new heights and accomplishments. The former experiences are part of life and will ever be so. You will always have to be adept and resilient in dealing with things beyond your control. But what about the second part, your desire to try new things and to be part of something larger than yourself? The latter impulse is something I see enacted every day and is part of the DNA of being a Williston student.
The Class of 2016 embodies this spirit of being multifaceted: you are artists, standouts on the math team, members of championship athletic teams, volunteers who read to local elementary students, leaders, friends, the list is as infinite as the personalities of the members of the Class of 2016.
I hope that each of you, as you turn new pages into the exciting lives that lie in your future, will never lose sight of that"We Will" spirit that was so much a part of your time at Williston. Don't ever stop the life long process of learning and becoming something new:"WE ARE Williston alumni" should forever translate into lives of Purpose,Passion, and Integrity.
