The Williston Northampton School Easthampton, Massachusetts

Then, Williston was an opportunity to make friendships and have new experiences. Now, Williston is those friendships and memories, with a sense of pride. Williston is, and will always be ours.

Madeline Stern Six-Year Senior School President

The Log 2013-2014 Six year seniors, do you remember that September 7, 2007 was your first day of Middle School classes? Four year seniors, that your first upper school English class was on September 14, 2010. Probably not. This year, school opened on Monday, September 9, 2013, though reading this now, that, too, likely seems like forever ago. While the collective details may become blurry with the passage time, some things about the Williston Northampton experience do not. Teachers will always be incredibly supportive: Mr. and Mrs. Conroy, cheering on the sideline of Sawyer field; Mrs. Grant giving extra help every free period; Swanee, applauding our performances and successes in his blog. Friends will always maintain unbreakable bonds and support each other through AP History exams and life's other challenges. Williston dorms will be second homes to students from all over the world, and those kids, their other family. The campus will always beam when the leaves are changing, and blossom as another graduation comes near. Some things on campus have and will change as they must always. Then, our homework was hand written; now, we 'drop box' digital homework and text our teachers. Then, we hiked to Dunkin; now, we all but live at Tandem. Then, we crossed the road in middle school herds; now, we day students taxi our boarder friends around campus and Northampton. Then, first period was fixed, and we had 6 numerically named periods; now our day is comprised of 7 rotating letter class periods. Then, freshman navigated high school homework on their own; now, daytime study hall is the norm. Then, girls lived in Logan House; now, boys call it home. Then, Mem housed boys and girls; now, girls occupy the whole of that side of campus. Then, we were terrified. Then, we worried about leaving our families and starting fresh. Then, we wondered where we would sit in the dining hall, what the `SH' and `WB' written on our schedules were. Then, we were confused by units, the nuances of the dress code, and when and where to sign in and out. Then we missed home and our friends. Now, we are again scared. We wonder about life post-Willy. Will we get along with our college roommates, will we choose the right classes, and how we will possibly survive without Tandem and our best friends by our side? For better or for worse, everything does change. Despite that change, Williston Northampton remains a strong, proud, and unique campus, a product of its history and all those who have come before us. As the seniors prepare to start a new chapter in their lives, and the underclassman and faculty prepare to say goodbye, we reflect on what Williston means to us: now and then. "A lot has changed for the better," says senior Lindsay Richardson, "but we are still the amazing Williston Northampton School community that will always hold a special place in our hearts and memories." Now and then, Williston has changed us all. Class of 2014, congratulations as Williston now moves from your 'now' to your 'then'. We invite you to turn the page to see what Williston was, and what it has become for us. Enjoy!

"Then I took satisfaction in my own teaching; now I derive joy in the learning of others." - Mr. Gunn

September, 1985. President Reagan sat down with then-new Russian President, Mikhail Gorbachev, for the first time. Wearing seatbelts while driving become law in the eighth state of the United States. In one of the greatest upsets in sports history, Villanova beat Georgetown in the NCAA Basketball Finals. The most important event of 1985, however, may well have been when a young Peter Gunn, a recent Dartmouth College graduate, first stepped foot on the Williston Northampton School campus as a vibrant new history teacher. Mr. Gunn's reach on campus is undeniable. In his almost 30 years here, Mr. Gunn has taught a wide range of classes, including some of the most challenging AP courses offered at the school. He has coached cross-country, softball, squash, and hockey. He has served as department head for at least two tenures, been dorm head, a Willistonian advisor, a Political Awareness Club advisor, a coordinator of blood drives, a Cum Laude society officer, and the creator of a strong "We the People" Constitutional competition program. This program is a testament to Gunn's spirit and dedication; in it, he has inspired his students to both grapple with challenging Constitutional concepts and to compete successfully at a national level, last year, earning second place in Massachusetts and twenty-ninth in the country. This winter, Mr. Gunn led the Girls' Varsity squash team to become New England champions. In short, in his time here, Mr. Gunn has been a part of every area of Williston life. Mr. Gunn's involvement goes beyond academics and sports, though, into the Williston and larger communities. Throughout winter, Gunn can be found tapping campus trees for his fresh maple syrup, generously shared with a side of his delightful brownies. Or, he can be found at local go-kart tracks, racing again and again in attempts to beat his sons, Couper and William; as often, he is the first to share these experiences with the greater Williston community, students and faculty alike. President of the Easthampton School Board and an involved coach of local youth sports, Mr. Gunn has also made continuous efforts to bridge the gap between the Williston and Easthampton communities. Further, and perhaps most telling, he is known to send encouraging emails to the whole senior class and even the whole campus community, reminding us to "take care of one another." From the beginning of his time here, Mr. Gunn seemed to understand teaching as a craft, constantly improving his own teaching through self-reflection, practice, dedication, and professional development. His history department colleague and current Dean of Faculty, Peter Valine, said of Gunn,"I was encouraged but not surprised to find a section of[Gunn's recent] selfevaluation entitled "Innovations Attempted." Peter is extremely thoughtful in his approach to teaching, he reflects on his successes and failures and then moves forward. He has a passion for his craft, and as most effective teachers, he loves learning." More than one colleague admires Gunn for his enthusiasm, dedication, scholarship, omnipresence on campus, but above all, for his courage in always vocally supporting his convictions. Perhaps only larger than Mr. Gunn's presence on campus is his long-standing reputation as a rigorous teacher who demands no less of his students than he does of himself, knowing that each student is capable of greatness. Many members of the class of 2014 have faced his exigent teaching styles in AP United States History and AP Microeconomics, also experiencing firsthand the support he offers his students when they express self-doubt. His unyielding expectations show students that they can accomplish even more than they thought possible. Throughout each of his classes, his unique humor always keeps his students engaged. The large number of college recommendations that he is asked to complete each year, too, demonstrates his regular connection to the graduating class. Gunn's wife, Robin Gunn, says, "Peter is driven to share his knowledge with his students and, most importantly, encourages them to seek answers on their own. There are so many quotes and notes from former students who credit Peter for awakening and fine-tuning their need and desire to ask questions and form their opinions rather than mindlessly accepting 'facts' generated by others." It is impossible to list everything that you have done and continue to do for this Williston community. We, the class of 2014, sincerely thank you for your role in our awakening. We cannot picture Williston without you. As a small token of our collective gratitude and remembrance, we, the senior class of 2014, dedicate our senior yearbook to you, Mr. Peter Gunn.

Dear Class of 2014:

Many years from now, you might get the inclination to pull out your yearbook in order to recall the' roster of a certain team, the cast of a play, or to reminisce about a favorite teacher. The inescapable reality is that as time passes, memories tend to fade more quickly than any of us care to admit. But pictures remain a link to those bygone years, even in these days of Instagram anc Flickr, which, for that matter, might not be around in the same form as your yearbook will be years from now.

When you find yourself, at some point in the future, thumbing through your yearbook to answei the question: "What was it like at Williston?" that question could lead you to many othel reflections about the realities of your present day world and the days of the past. Even now, if yot were to look at a photo from your ninth or tenth grade year, you might not recognize the persor looking back at you.

The Class of 2014 will be associated with collective moments: the inspiring speech given b) Afghan education activist Shabana Basil-Rasikh, William Kamkwamba (the boy who harnessec the wind) and his message of self-reliance, and the amazing drama productions like A Servant tc Two Masters and Urinetown: The Musical. And, of course, each of you has your own private collection of memories, the ones that are most meaningful to you on a personal level.

The theme of this yearbook is "Then and Now." As you look through the pages, I hope you see that each contributed to the life of the school and your accomplishments have become part oi Williston's history. What I hope for each of you, above all, is that Williston remains a place where like the pages of the yearbook, you will return to refresh memories of those events and people whc influenced the person you have become.

Plan to return for your fifth reunion to this special place that has become an indelible part of youi life. You are always welcome to visit with teachers, coaches, advisers, and all of those who have helped you, in some small measure, to move forward with purpose, passion, and integrity. Sincerely, Robert W. Hill III Head of School

)ear Readers, fter a whirlwind of creating the book that rests in your hands, made from thousands of emails, as many texts, more ard work and late nights than you could imagine, and definitely a little bit of stress, we are proud to present the 014 yearbook — a product that represents the last year's success, hard work, and strong community. yen in our six years here, Williston has experienced a vast amount of change, from the people we see around impus to the daily class schedule. With our theme of"Then and Now," we tried to show that beyond all changes, Iilliston's core values, however, remain the same. When we return to campus many years from now, there will be ew buildings and different faces, but, at its heart, the Williston Northampton School will always be recognizable to S. 7ith the completion of this yearbook, there are certainly many people to thank. o the Class of 2014, congratulations on your success! Thank you for your cooperation, helping us with so many pects of yearbook creation: from a senior picture to a quote about your time here. Although it is difficult to 3ndense up to six years of friendship and memories into a two-dimensional 250-page book, we hope this yearbook ways helps trigger your fondest Williston memories. to Madame Michalski, merci beaucoup pour ton travail cette annee. It would be impossible to sufficiently thank you either French or English. Even in the most stressful of situations, your support and encouragement, both in and ut of class, are thoroughly appreciated. Your careful eye for misspellings and errors helped to make this book a ccess. Without you and the enormous amount of time that you put into ensuring each page be the best it could be, Dmpleting a yearbook in the time provided would not have been possible. o Hannah Lee, thank you for the enormous amount of time and effort that you put into this yearbook. Your termination and positive energy are unparalleled. We are sure of your success in the future, and we hope you know at we will always be here for you. o Lindsay Richardson, Taylor Potasky, Caroline Borden, and the Log Staff as a whole, this year's book represents Lir coming to accomplish something that seemed out of reach in a record short period of time. There were many oments where Lindsay donated a free period to take pictures and put finishing touches on pages that we would not aye been able to put together. Taylor, with her amazing positivity, was willing to take on any task that needed to be Dne, even with her busy schedule. Caroline stepped up and completed a section by herself, capturing beautiful emories within pictures, quotes, and formats. No amount of'thank you's would ever be able to express our atitude. are so proud of what the Log Staff has overcome and accomplished this year in an unprecedented short and busy piod of time. To the Williston community, although we are heading our separate ways, we hope this book presents a moment in time when we were one. ncerely, llie Lewis and Olivia Foster
