Principal and Board Chair’s Report
What impresses me about our children? So easy; our children strive with every opportunity to meet our Willowbank Way vision of Discover, Develop, Nurture. This year, after much consultation we completed the review of our Willowbank Way. The ‘new’ statements provide the learner with a set of well defined learning intentions and the ‘where to next?’ They highlight the learning and behavioural attributes needed by the 21st student as they progress through schooling towards employment opportunities that demand high level thinking skills and the ability to problem solve. Patterns, our Inquiry focus this year took us on a fantastic learning journey. Children learnt about patterns in and of the animal world, patterns in our environment, patterns in society and cultural significant patterns. This was highlighted during our major fundraiser, the Patterns Knowledge-athon. Children used technologies to investigate, design, create and modify an array of Patterns. The outcomes were astounding. Plus we raised over $21,000 for our hall rebuild. Our Cardboard Box challenge also provided children with further opportunity to be creative with technologies. On completion the children invited their peers to play or view their inventions. Nurturing relationships goes beyond the classroom and the school boundaries. This year our children continued their community support with fundraisers for Middlemore hospital, the SPCA, the Cancer Society, The Auckland Zoo elephants and people affected by war and the refugee crisis. As part of our celebration of learning we all (and I mean ALL 800 children, 60 staff and 100 parents) went on a learning journey to the Auckland Zoo. This was a wonderful finale to a great inquiry. Thank you to all our helpers on the day. And a particular thank you to Mrs Neish for her organisation. We also celebrated success in a number of interschool competitions in 2015. With our rugby, Mathex, chess and Year 3 girls gymnastic teams doing particularly well. Sienna Wall, our Year 6 speech winner, came 3rd in the local HPPA speech competition. In May we celebrated our very successful ERO visit. The ERO team identified Willowbank as a top performing school. Their key findings state: Willowbank School promotes student learning very effectively. Students benefit from a broad, relevant and well delivered curriculum. Students are highly engaged in the learning process and are supported well to be successful and independent learners. A spirit of leadership is nurtured in students. Being in the top % of schools means that ERO is likely to carry out the next review in four-to-five years. This is high praise for the success of our learning programmes, our wonderful, hardworking children, teachers, SLT and BoT. Next year our Learning Journey focus is ‘Responsefulness’which we will explore across the curriculum, with a specific focus on the Arts and Science curriculums. Which we shall showcase in grand style at the end of year. We look forward to you all being part of our new learning journey and celebration. To those of you leaving us this year, my thanks for your contribution to Willowbank School. I wish you well for the future. For those returning, we as a staff look forward to working alongside you in our quest to continue to discover, develop and nurture the potential of every learner at Willowbank School. P1

We have been practicing to become great word detectives in our reading; by searching the room for words we know reading them and then writing them down.
This year we had fun at
pyjama day. At pyjama day we did some Jump Jam. We had a photo of us wearing pyjamas. We also brought some food for a shared lunch. I loved pyjama day.
This year we made sunglasses. We made them on our own. We made them with a cardboard frame and the bendy bit out of straws. We are going to invite people to make …….. their own. ….

How do bees make honey? First the worker bees collect sweet sugary nectar from the flowers. When their honey stomach is full the bees go back to their hive and put the nectar into the honeycombs. Then the bees evaporate the water by flapping its wings. It turns the nectar into honey. Next when the honeycomb is full the bees put wax over the top to store it. Now you know how bees make honey. Room 12 learned about how bees make honey. Left: Diagram by Helena Newton. Above: Explanation by Nikki De La Cruz.
Left: Room 30 have been learning about fractions. Right: Artwork by Ethan Yang, Room 12. Below: Team 2 have been making bird feeders as part of our inquiry. Here are some of Room 30’s wonderful examples.

In Room 31, we enjoy being creative towards our learning. We have learnt how to use expression, clear voices, and to speak confidently in front of others by doing role plays. We performed Goldilocks and the Three Bears in front of the school assembly. We felt nervous and excited.
Team 2 have been learning how to write animal reports this year. Left: A report by Bradley Matthews, Room 10. Above: Room 14 wrote reports about Burma, the Auckland Zoo elephant.

Knowledge-‐athon During the Knowledge-‐a-‐ thon I had the best time ever because Ms Alderso n came to our lovely class and she asked a qu estion. If we got it right we could have 100 Aw hina points for each Awhina. I felt awesome when we got it because she thought it was cool and great. We got to bring our Kn owledge-‐a-‐thon activity that we had made, wi th help with from our parents. We showed them to the big Assembly. We also got a stamp book that had a kiwi on it. I felt important to myself. By Grace Eng

The Fly House I landed on a place far away from home. It was very strange. I could taste the splendid taste of juicy, sticky honey and the cheerful taste of apple. I could hear the buzzing sounds of my friends and noisy cars brushing past me. I could smell the sizzling smell of hotdogs cooking in the sun and the endless smell of yummy scrummy food. I could feel the ground beneath me rumbling under my tiny hairy legs and the spiky grass tickling me as I fly. I can see fluttering butterflies soaring past and the loud humans talking. There is so much to discover, I am going to ask my friends if I could come and live here. It is so much fun! By Jasmine Xu

ANZAC I am furious by the re d, hot, fresh blood that is pouring out of the sold iers. The dangerous gu ns are shooting with amaz ing point of speed hitti ng the poor soldiers. The soldiers are thudding an d crashing to the sandy, red, bloody ground. I am gloomy and miserabl e when I see my fri end calling for help when he got hit. I am running lik e lightning to save him bu t it was too late. I dearly miss my home. I feel like I have been hi t by a bus. I am not sle eping well just thinking of my beautiful husband. He is the best man I ha ve ever known. I wish I was safe and in my be d. But instead I am in a fro sty, dirty, wormy trenc h. I want to go to my hom e I want a normal life bu t it’s not going to happen . I feel like a rock trapp ed in danger I need to he lp our country I can’t let them down.

It has been fun gardening with my Willowgreen friends. Joanna (Rm 31 - year 2) Turtle day was the best day ever, we had so much fun with our big kid teachers (Yr 6 Enviro monitors). They taught us a lot about Turtles and then we got to use sprinkles on the Turtles we made. Jasmine, Ammara, Sarah (Room 11 - year 1) It was fun selling the vegetables we grew to Willowbank families. Bailey (Room 4 - year 6) At the start of the year working with the worms was disgusting, but by the end of the year it was fun working with the worms. Orlando (Room 4 - year 6) Working with the worms was freaky, but I loved planting the fruit trees. Tarryn (Room 4 - year 6)
