[Urban Stitching] Boston Fenway complex Site: Boston, USA Academic Work Fall 2013

Design Incentive Through analysis on urban typogies, the city of Boston reflects several issues rergarding to its public spaces. The city in general lacks pedestrian-oriented public spaces. In addition, the continuity of open spaces is often interupted by vehicle circulation, thus leading to a parcelized spatial condition that prohibits people from using the space with ease and convenience. The site analysis discovered several characteristics of the site regarding to programs, circulation and fabric pattern. Open Space

Concept Boston Fenway Complex aims to turn the existing chaotic site into a pedestrian-friendly urban community—a type of space that is rarely found in Boston. The shifting grid system brings diverse programs from four sides into one network, and the layered plaza system creates continous open space to facilitate pedestrian movement.

Circulation Flow From demographic and site condition research, three major groups that would use the site most frenquently are identified: the college student group who seeks for off-campus housing and recreational activities out of their college town, male and female singles that work in the city and rent apartments, the crowds that go to Fenway Park to see baseball games. College students will mainly drive to the site via two highways running next to the site. The single renters and baseball audience will mainly approach the site by foot due to the close proximity. The design aims to accomodate all the potential user circulations with the existing site condition, trying to create a seamless public pedestrian experience acrossing the west and east side of the site, with no interference from vehicle or program circulation.

[ The Bubble] Workspace table design Personal Work Fall 2015

Problem & Concept

Form & Material Study

The project starts with a discovery with certain group’s special need in public working space. The pros and cons of common working space types are analyzed below. This group hopes to work in a space that offers the chance to both work privately and to communicate with others. The investigation found out that the definition of privacy is described as the capability of controling one’s relationship with the external environment. Therefore, the concept of the design is to create a simpe product at low cost that allows users to freely switch the spatial quality of their working space.

Various forms are sketched out for investigation. Proposals can be categorized into two groups: chair-oriented systemm and desk-oriented system. Proposal 6, the folding dome, is chosen for several reasons: desk’s stability compared to chairs; less material consumption; easy operation; greater area coverage, etc.

[Clique] Shopping Application Design Personal Work Fall 2015

Problem & Concept

Business Model

Although many shopping applications have engaged with the problem described in the two images below, few is able to provide highly localized, undelayed service. This app design aims to create a real-time exchange interface that allows buyers to immediately discover and compare desirable products, and also enables sellers to inform buyers of the products they wish to sell in a timely and unimpeded manner. The name “Clique” refers to the full-coverage network created by the platform: buyer-to-buyer communication, seller-to-seller exposure, as well as buyer-seller economical and communicational exchange.

Clique mainly profits via two means. One is helping sellers to promote their deals and stores by receiving monthly promotion fees or one-time promotion fees. The promotion effect will be reflected on the time-length the promoted subject remains on top of the search list. The promotion fee is completely optional, and all sellers will still have their latest published deals displayed on top of the list, then move downward chronologically (below promoted subjects).

Buyers cannot receive deals information in a timely manner when waking around in shopping districts.

Local sellers cannot pass on updates of their products to buyers in a timely manner when they have the need.

The other way Clique profits is deducting a percentage from every succesful payment on deals from buyers to sellers. The percentage varies depending on the product. The lower the original price, the less percentage sellers would need to pay to Clique. This way sellers are able to freely publish deals onto the platform with less financial burdens.

Easy Registration/Payment: Instead of registering with email or other ID numbers, Clique binds account with cell phone’s built-in identifier, thus making the registration process much easier. Clique also offers flexible payment methods to accomodate varied purchase ability. Fine-grained Localization: Clique’s search tools can tell you within seconds if the grocery store next door is doing 50% off for Liberte yogurt today.

[ Three Bridges] Laxe coastal lighthouse & resor t Site: A Coru単a, Spain Academic Work Spring 2013

Concept This is a device that bridges land, sea and sky; an equator that defines above, below, and within; an infrastructure that traps the warmth of the glorious sunlight, the fregrance of the wild flowers and the everchanging water reflections sparkling in the darkness. The architecture provides private and public space that would allow visitors to stay and relax, to discover the uniqueness of the surronding environment, and to interact with the local culture of Laxe.

Siting Process

Spatial Experience

A cove is found on the north tip of the peninsula, which is an ideal place for the assigned program: a light house. The site conveys the unique geographic quailities of Laxe with its rock-based ground surface and coastal erosive condition. In addition, the side has a gently sloped periphery, and is well-sheltered from the Atlantic wind. The ground condition naturally guides visitors to deviate from the main road and walk toward the chosen site.

Three types of spatial conditions are discovered and incorporated into the design. For above and below, two opposite experiences of the site are focussed, one bright and expansive, the other dim and defined. The within condition allows viewers to leave the land and floates in the air, situating themselves at the horizon level. The spatial conditions constructed by both the environment and the three bridges allow the viewers to observe the island, the sea and the sky from a unique perspective.

Above

Within

Below

Form Generation Various forms and spatial conditions are experimented to integrate with the site, aiming to find an ideal solution that would produce the three envisioned types of spatial experiences. For the final design, three “bridges are created: an entry bridge that emerges from the hillside path and leads to the roof top; an L-shaped long bar that contains all the programs and actively communicate with the surroundings; a tower that serves as a fire escape, a viewing platform and a lighthouse. The circulation within these three bridges allows visitors to be detached from the land, to float on the sea, and regain their attachment with the ground. The main bar is divided into two layers: the upper residential zone and the lower cultural zone. Two ends of the bar are designed to be two-story spaces that connect and mediate between the private and public zone. The underside zone is essentially a dock that runs along the long bar and links the two ends. It is functioned as a fishing market, allowing visitors to interact with local fishermen and gain an insight of Laxe’s fishing culture.

The private zone consists of ten guest rooms with additional attics that could accomodate a total of 30 people. Doors are located along the south side, making the terrace space both a circulation path and a micro social space. Bathrooms and kitchens are located at west end of the bar, where the volume turns its orientation and physically cuts into the hill. The public zone includes a mini port that allow fishermen and guests to be able to enter from the bottom.

[Layering Ecology] Mckeespor t Brownfield Revitalization Site: Pennsylvania, USA Academic Work Fall 2015

2000s

Design Incentive Research started with studying the ecological aspect of the site. This includes both the narrow definition of ecology as relationships withinnature, and also a broader interpretationsuch as the ecology of the economic and social environment. Three maps on the left are produced to denote the historical changes of the site’s ecological patterns. Research found that the site now has almost lost that aspect of the identity due to the rise and decline of the steel industry. Local people have generated both a smokestack nostalgia and concerns toward the future of the site.

Concept

Disappearance of natural habitat

Decline of economic flow

Local effort in brownfield revival

Railway system as barrier to river

Precedent in brownfield revival

The goal is to improve the site condition and regain its vitality. The idea is to superimpose three layers of systems on site: a constructed waterscape that would create various kinds of habitats to purify river water and bring back nature; a market system that re-appropriate existing industrial ruins into functional components and recreate a new flow of goods to encourage community involvement and social activities; a circulation network that integrates with surrounding urban fabrics to facilitate access and potential development. Three maps are created to identify the historical traces on site in relation to these three systems. Potential programs are also identified and mapped out in each system. These mappings provide a foundation for form generation and program organization. Processing the information given in the collages provides an opportunity to further design and articulate the relationship among the three layers.

Spawning Habitat

Layer integration The waterscape system performs a staged cleaning process using mainly passive methods. These methods themselves become the natural habitats for a variety of species. The market system inherits the historical product flow and incorporate the agricultural production component with the water purification process. The industrial structures allow the circulation network to penetrate into the shell, thus provide stages for social interactions among locals and visitors. The circulation network takes considerations of existing paths and access points, then reorganizes the circulations of various groups to guide them to better experience the site. Together with the other two layers, the network offers opportunities to perform recreational, economic and social activities under unique spatial conditions. The circulation also identifies certain zone of the site that has developing potentials, so that the site would continue to evolve and thrive.

[Episode 3] Adaptor

[Living Canopy] Honolulu Emergency Shelter System Site: Hawaii, USA Studio Title: Twisted and Woven-Sensible Architectures Spring 2015

Problem The initial thinking targets on the potential problems Hawaii will have when hurricane hits the island, among which food and shelter shortage are the two major concerns for post-disaster relief.

Worldwide Hurricane Risk Map Deformation Study Oahu resident population in 2014 is 953,207, and 772,098 (81%) people lives on the south city side. Existing shelter capacity can only cover 30%-35% of the entire population.

Central Pacific Hurricane Occurrence

Even using tents, hotel rooms, rental properties, homes of friends and relatives, there would still be 45,000 people in need of shelter. Shelter Fact

In 2012, proportion of imported food in Hawaii is 92%. Currently, Hawai’i has a supply of fresh produce for no more than 10 days. Replacing 10% of current food imports will create a total of 2300 jobs.

Food Fact

Dynamics Study

Textile Study The project starts with an intensive study on textile, aiming to generate a set of pseudo-codes from its properties and behaviors that can be used in later design.

Before Disaster

Concept The project aims to use the result from previous textile study to derive a canopy system that not only tackles the basic concerns, but also creates a community hotspot for the local people during normal time. The designed canopy is a living one. It shelters fulfillment of people at all times via adaptive and transformative qualities of the system. Food production, fresh & dry food storage, water storage, cooling system, additional shelter space are incorporated in the living canopy, which directly provides disaster relief to the people on site. Farmer’s market, children’s playground, community education and other community programs can happen under the canopy space during normal time, which enhance people’s knowledge of the system and allow it to become part of the Hawaii culture. Since the communities on the island are defined by school districts, and all schools turn into shelter spaces when disaster happens, it is approporate to select school campuses as the sites for our canopy system, which is adaptive enough to fit in any campus context. A sensory directing system is designed for guiding people to specific shelters that have enough resources and spaces.

Concept The work uses fragments of existing online resource to collage an infinite looping experience around Pompidou in Paris, aiming to investigate the nature of the digital and media environment that people are situated within; through the lenses of time, scale and privacy to address the issue that related to constructed reality, hyper-reality and media penetration as discussed in Jean Baudrillard’s essay simulacra and simulation.

The scale discusses the relationship between the viewer and the content. One unique property of the constructed reality is that the scale of the scene is highly adaptable to scale. From cellphone to television to movie screen, the information exchange can happen anywhere at any time through digital media. The digital environment that encapsulates us is definitely unprecedented and revolutionary, yet it is also terrifying to realize that almost all information we receive nowadays are through digital media, in another word, through the hyper-reality.

dissolve

The use of google street view images is defined as constructing a “reality” that involves a range of physical distortions, time differences, environmental variances and activity dynamics. The scene created is a simulation of reality; but at the same time, it is a simulacra which adapts the perceived reality, and produces a copy that loses its original and makes the original a simulacrum. The final product is a hyper-reality, a constructed world that is derived from selectively choosing symbols and conditions of the original, yet becomes so powerful that it replaces the original and transformed into the new and the only reality. Baudrillard believed that society has become so saturated with these simulacra and our lives so saturated with the constructs of society that all meaning was being rendered meaningless by being infinitely mutable.
