OTHER PERFORMANCE EVENT

Kingston Trio The Kingston Trio is one of the few groups today that has survived the many changes in the world of music. Fifty-eight years after their first success, the Trio is still on the road, bringing the rich tradition of American folk music into the mainstream for the first time. During the late 50s and early 60s, the Trio enjoyed unprecedented record sales and worldwide fame, while influencing the musical tastes of a generation. Through changing times, the Trio has played on, remaining popular for a simple reason...great songs that sound as good today as the first time you heard them. And fifty-eight years after Tom Dooley shot to the top of the charts, the Trio is still on the road thirty weeks a year, bringing back all the great memories and making new ones. The Kingston Trio’s trademark three-part harmony and clean, crisp sound makes it possible for them to “sing a song, tell a story, and make it good.” Now, hear one of the most celebrated names in acoustic folk music.

The concert begins with Liadov’s Kikimora, a symphonic work built on the Slavic mythological character of the same name. The Pharaoh’s Daughter Length: 1 hour 41 minutes Magnificently performed by the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, The Pharaoh’s Daughter stars the couple of Svetlana Zakharova and Sergei Filin. The dreams of opium, the Egyptianinspired costumes, make-up, and settings, as well as the story itself drive the audience into an exotic world. This choreography brings together extremely difficult variations for the soloists and great scenes with almost totality of the Bolshoi Ballet’s dancers. Italian Composer Cesare Pugni’s (1802-1870) music is performed with grace by the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra, conducted by Alexander Sotnikov, who adapted the original score.

Seiji Ozawa: A Concert for Herbert von Karajan with Anne-Sophie Mutter Length: 1 hour 52 minutes Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter performs with Seiji Ozawa, conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker from the Wiener Musikverein celebrating the 100th anniversary of Herbert von Karajan’s birth. The concert opens with Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, followed by Bach’s Partita No. 2, and later by Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony. Herbert von Karajan supported Anne-Sophie Mutter early in her career (age 13) inviting her to play with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

FEB 23

John Nelson Conducts Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis Length: 1 hour 20 minutes Sung in Latin with English subtitles. John Nelson proves his love for Beethoven in the beautiful Gulbenkian Hall in Lisbon conducting Beethoven’s only Mass. A proportionately gigantic work, the Missa Solemnis (1824), composed for the archbishop Rodolphe, is a work made of sufferance. At the time, completely deaf, Beethoven had just lost his brother. Even though the composer confessed his desire to commit suicide, his energy eventually overcame his desperation. John Nelson, an old “Beethovenian,” gives a poignant interpretation of this vast liturgy. Balancing between explosive choir parts, mystical contemplation, and classic equilibrium, this version brings homage to one of the masterpieces of Beethoven.

MAR 16 Wednesday, 1:30 p.m.

Jan Lisiecki performs Mozart, Bach, and Chopin with Christian Zacharias Length: 1 hour 39 minutes In 2013 Jan Lisiecki, the Canadian rising star of the piano, gave two memorable concerts at the Verbier Festival; footage from each concert has been combined into a single video version. Considered “probably the most accomplished pianist of his age,” Jan Lisiecki has already won several international competitions, including the OSM Standard Life Competition in 2009. Here he performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Concerto No. 20 with Christian Zacharias, Bach’s Partita No. 1 in B flat Major, BWV 825 and several works composed by Frederic Chopin, including the Nocturne in C sharp Minor, Op., the Études, Op. 10 as well as two other etudes from the opus 25.

Art Gallery Betsy Miraglia Betsy Miraglia earned a BFA in Graphic Design from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, PA. After spending much of her career in packaging and corporate logo design, she was introduced to papermaking after a colleague attended courses at the International Paper Symposium in Kyoto, Japan. Betsy loved the process and what it did for her spiritually. She gradually merged the two mediums, which allowed her to continue to explore her fascination with design using texture, color, and repeated pattern. Betsy’s work is about ritual…the oneness of creating. It’s about color, interaction, and space. The process consists of laminating layers of colored handmade papers, which allows the viewer to go in and out of the pulp painting creating a feeling of becoming “one” with the image. After the drying process, she constructs a collagraph plate to be printed onto the colorful story that is beginning to surface. Collaged pieces of handmade and decorative Japanese papers are added to create motion and more detail.

Yachiyo Beck Originally from Japan, Yachiyo began her career as a catalog and runway model and eventually achieved the position as general manager of an international modeling agency. After 16 years in the fashion industry, Yachiyo retired and moved to the United States where she began her career as a professional artist. The drama in her paintings comes through her experience in the fashion world. She attempts to create an atmosphere that offers the viewer a temporary diversion from life’s adversities. Her sources of inspiration include personal experiences, nature, and her own artistic imagination. A distinct Asian influence is present in many of her paintings. Yachiyo has worked in a variety of media including pencil, charcoal, and pastels. Her current focus is on painting with watercolor and oil. Yachiyo’s work has received many awards including those from the American and National Watercolor Society. Her work has also been published in art magazines such as American Watercolor Magazine. She is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, and Baltimore Watercolor Society. Beauty was not her only qualification. A royal mistress had to be resourceful and cunning to maintain her influence, and was often backed by other powerful nobles who hoped to use her position for their own gain. Book Review: Rosemary by Kate Clifford Larson In the study of the American Presidency, most people are aware of the “Camelot” era of John F. Kennedy as well as the Kennedy family of Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. Within that famous American family was a sister of the President by the name of Rosemary. She was born with intellectual disabilities, and at the age of 23, underwent a prefrontal lobotomy. After this medical procedure, Rosemary’s life becomes vague to the American public. Now through a new book, Kate Clifford Larson reopens the facts of her life and the many details not known by the American public. ** It is not necessary to read the book to attend the lecture. Strong Drinks and Heavenly Brews: A Short History of Beer, Wine, Coffee, and Tea Take a lively look at the history of mankind’s favorite beverages. “Liquid bread” to the pyramid-builders of Egypt, beer gained commercial status thanks to the pious brewmasters of medieval Europe. Wine fueled the drinking parties of ancient Greece, but later connoisseurs hailed it as “bottled poetry.” Early monks and mystics relied on coffee and tea to stay alert during religious rituals. Over time, these warming stimulants won the approval of Enlightenment thinkers, Industrial Age workers, 19th-century socialites, and the trendy urbanites crowding the neighborhood Starbucks today. These two sessions – filled to the brim with entertaining tales – will quench your deepest thirst for knowledge! Wednesday, April 20, 27 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Cultural Center Education Room Presenter: John Maietta, U.S. Army Retired Cost: $10 / two sessions

Leslie Stainton, author of a new history of the Fulton Theatre, examines these controversial events and traces Stevens’ legacy on stage and screen, from antebellum days to Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln.
