She hopes for her artwork to bring the beauty and tranquility of nature to the viewer and the importance of conserving our breathtaking wildlife and landscape. She shares a passion for nature through colorful, finely detailed paintings, inspired by the tranquility and beauty found while hiking through America’s National Parks. In 2011, 2012, and 2013 she hiked Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Canyonlands, Arches, Mesa Verde, Capitol Reef, Zion, Bryce, Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Durango to see the beauty in person which she shares in her display.

Liz Hess A full-time artist, Liz Hess is the fourth child of missionaries to Honduras, Central America, where she was born in 1965. Returning home with her family in the early 1970s, she grew up in Lancaster. Even as a young girl, she was known for her artistic ability, collecting awards for her work throughout her childhood and teenage years. Once a year, Liz travels abroad to spend several weeks painting on location. Trying to capture on canvas such beautiful locations as the old world charm of Tuscany, the canals of Venice, the lavender fields of Provence, or the brooding sea and landscapes of Ireland has proven to be invaluable in stretching Liz’s artistic imagination. One of her most popular collections is the Red Umbrella series which was first created during one of those trips. Following the solitary figure with the red umbrella, Liz takes the viewer on a journey to many of the beautiful locales she has visited. The collection continues to grow as she continues to travel. Liz’s cat and dog have been an influence behind another popular series. Departing from her typical style of more representational art, she ventures into the crazy world of illustrated felines and canines. Her “All about Cats & Dogs”collection highlights the episodes of life as can only be told by a group of colorfully eclectic creatures. SEPT 7 – OCT 25

Life of the Mind Socrates Café

Socrates Café encourages spirited discussion about issues and topics that challenge our beliefs about contemporary society and who we are as human beings. Our quest is not to arrive at answers or consensus but rather to develop more and better questions. We seek clarification of our own thinking and careful and respectful consideration of the views of others as we sift through, sort out, and attempt to arrive at new insights into the topics under discussion. If you enjoy thinking about and questioning commonly accepted assumptions (even your own), and if you are willing to challenge the taken-for-granted authority of any position or representation of fact or truth, join us at Socrates Café.

Dates and Topics June 13 Cults Under what conditions do cults arise? Must society eliminate cults or work to coexist with them? Is there inherent harm in cults? July 11 Monopoly Within some areas of commerce, monopolies nearly control. Should we be concerned? Are monopolies good, dangerous, or just a neutral part of life today? August 8 Purpose Is purpose critical to a life lived well? Can people just “go with the flow” and have meaningful lives?

Socrates Café meets in the Cultural Center Ballroom on the second Monday of each month from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

“True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us.” – Socrates

United Nations September 12 The purpose of the United Nations, from its charter, is “to maintain international peace and security … to develop friendly relations among nations … to achieve international cooperation ... and to be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations …” Since it has been virtually ineffective, what can be done? Is there a virtue in merging, all or in part, our governance with that of other countries? What about the European Union?

“ The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” – Socrates

Poetry Circle Although the Poetry Circle will not meet during the summer months, we would like to especially invite those Residents that are new to our communities to consider attending our monthly meetings when we resume in the fall (September 20) at which time we will be reading, discussing, and sharing our responses to 20th and 21st century poetry. We also sponsor semi-annual public poetry readings in Willow Valley Communities. You do not need to write poetry or perform in the public readings to participate in the Poetry Circle. Our primary purpose is to enjoy and learn about some of the best contemporary poetry through lively and respectful dialogue. Once we resume, meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Mylin House. Questions? Call Alyce Jenkins at 464.6111. The group is fortunate to have been founded by Lakes Resident Mary Jean Irion, Founder and First Director of The Writers’ Center at Chautauqua, New York, whose own poetry has been published in prestigious poetry and literary magazines.

Great Decisions At Great Decisions, we meet to discuss and debate current world issues. These discussions are supported by materials prepared by the Foreign Policy Association. A background book may be ordered from the Association’s website. A DVD concerning the topic will also be shown at each meeting. From January through May and September through November, the Great Decisions Group meets in the Spring Run Auditorium on the second Tuesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. The coordinators invite residents of all Willow Valley Communities to attend and expand their understanding of important issues that impact our world.

Movie Memories “The Pride of the Yankees” Summer usually brings memories of picnics, swimming, ice cream, and, of course, baseball. Over the years, baseball has had many heroes, some more outstanding than others. Lou Gehrig (The Iron Horse) was one such outstanding hero. Among numerous awards, he was voted the American League Most Valuable Player twice, a member of six World Series championship teams, and finally inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. However, his fight and ultimate death at age 37 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) defines him as a true courageous American hero. Come see this movie about the life of Lou Gehrig that will be an inspiration in your own life.

Since doing research for her book, Thinner, Fitter, Happier: Dancing Will Change Your Life!, author and social dancer Dr. Marian Condon has made it a mission to entice her fellow seniors onto the dance floor. Join Marian for an upbeat, informative presentation on dancing’s many benefits. Wear comfy shoes, an optional rumba line-dance lesson is included. No partner needed. Education Classes Register using Event Registration. World Instruments Showcase Susan Collier West’s musical journey began at a very young age with piano lessons, followed by violin at the age of seven. In spite of encouragement from her music teachers and parents, she didn’t continue lessons. Constantly hearing ‘musical sounds’ around her, such as the turn signal of a car or wind through the trees, she always beat a counter rhythm to it. In college she taught herself to play folk guitar and many years later, she continued down her musical path, learning and playing a variety of instruments, such as djembe, harmonium, harp, and hammered dulcimer. She embellishes her music using instruments such as kartals, thunder tube, wahwah tube, shekere, and others. Susan will demonstrate each instrument, and then you will have an opportunity to try some of them out yourself. Come and explore the world of instruments.
