Length: 1 hour 18 minutes From Tel Aviv’s Mann Auditorium, Zubin Mehta leads the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra as they accompany three very different 18th century concertos performed by trumpeters Ram Oren and Yigal Meltzer, clarinetist Ron Selka, and pianist Khatia Buniatishvili. Exhibition On Screen - Degas: Passion for Perfection Length: 1 hour 25 minutes Using written accounts by friends and commentators, and the narration of letters written by Degas himself, this film reveals a more complex truth behind one of the most influential French artists of the late 19th century. This film tells a fascinating story of Degas’ pursuit for perfection through both experimentation with new techniques and lessons learned from studying the past masters. Sometimes frustrated by his own failings, Degas was consumed by obsessive principles and failing eye sight, but his determination to capture everyday life was evident in every mark he made. Using writings from friends and commentators, and narration of letters written by himself, the film reveals a more complex truth behind one of the most influential French artists.

Claudio Abbado Conducts Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, “Tragic”
Length: 1 hour 28 minutes Claudio Abbado’s Lucerne Festival Orchestra is an exclusive ensemble of handpicked orchestral musicians. It opens up new dimensions in the interpretation of works by Gustav Mahler. The sixth symphony – first performed in 1906 and sometimes referred to as “Tragic” – ends on a much sadder, almost nihilistic, note than most of the other Mahler symphonies. This imposing music is captured during this performance marked by awesome silences and towering climaxes conjured by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.

Exhibition On Screen - Rembrandt
Length: 1 hour 30 minutes Meet the man behind the masterpieces in this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition hosted by London’s National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum featuring Rembrandt. The film documents this exhibition by interweaving Rembrandt’s life story with behind-the-scenes preparations at these world famous institutions, highlighting the final years of Rembrandt’s life. The masterpieces he produced during this period could be called his defining works, with each piece so soulful and honest that they helped sculpt our idea of Rembrandt as a man and as an artist. For many, Rembrandt is the greatest artist that ever lived and this film seeks to explore the truth about the man behind the legend.

The Nutcracker by Vainonen after Petipa and Ivanov, Music by Tchaikovsky
Length: 1 hour 43 minutes Tchaikovsky’s fantastical masterpiece presented with Vainonen’s choreography, the version most popular in Russia. The Étoile dancers Alina Somova and Vladimir Shklyarov light up the stage, accompanied by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra led by the legendary maestro Valery Gergiev. The story goes that Petipa and Tchaikovsky met at the Mariinsky Theatre during a performance of Minkus and Petipa’s ballet La Bayadère. When Petipa walked on stage, he turned toward Tchaikovksy’s box and exclaimed, “If only the greatest Russian composer could write for our theater!” Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and Swan Lake were the result.
DEC 17 Tuesday, 10:00 a.m.
Petipa’s libretto was inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s French version of the tale E.T.A.Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. In 1934, Vainonen created a new choreography that came to be considered the epitome of classical ballet.

Veterans Day Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country’s service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on November 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to “Veterans Day” in order to account for all veterans in all wars. Please join the Willow Valley Communities Veterans as we honor our own during this Veterans Day ceremony. Our speaker will be Willow Valley Communities Resident Colonel Betty Price, USAF, Ret. Considered one of the women pioneers in the military, Colonel Price was commissioned in 1973 and served for 26 years on active duty, primarily in intelligence. Her distinguished career included assignments at the Air Force Academy, where she helped plan the entry of the first women to that institution; 4 tours in Washington, one of which was on the Secretary of Defense’s personal staff; 1 year at Osan AB in South Korea, where she was in charge of current intelligence; almost 4 years as a commander, where she was responsible for the mission and people of a 500-member targeting intelligence function; and a 4-month operational tour at Incirlik AB in Turkey, where she was chief of intelligence for Operation Provide Comfort. Kathleen H. Becker Kathleen H. Becker graduated from Plymouth State University of New Hampshire with a degree in Art Education, concentrating in painting. She taught in public and private schools for over 25 years. She also earned a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Plattsburgh State University of New York. During this time, Becker also spent her summers at Silver Bay YMCA on Lake George in the Adirondacks of New York assisting and then teaching the daily adult watercolor classes. In 2014, after leaving her teaching position in the public schools, Becker began to concentrate more of her time honing her skills in watercolor and oils by taking classes at the York Art Association. She also teaches adults and teens at this association and exhibits regularly in their gallery. Becker’s work has been selected for a number of juried exhibitions in Pennsylvania, as well as being shown in local art galleries in the York, Pennsylvania area and the Lake George region of New York. Kathleen says, “Art has been a major focus of my life since I was a young child. I love color and the natural transparency of watercolors. My watercolors capture nature’s beauty using color and light. I have recently rediscovered my love of oil painting. In watercolor, an artist works light to dark, but in oils the opposite applies. It can be a challenge at times! I enjoy exploring the different qualities and techniques that can be used with these mediums to create interesting landscapes of places I’ve traveled. My paintings preserve memories of a time or place that is meaningful for me, and hopefully to the viewer.”

Stephen Brehm Influenced by the artists that had a direct painting method, Stephen’s art captures a gesture or objects with simple yet lively brush strokes. Joaquin Sorolla, John Singer Sargeant, early Edward Hopper, and Wayne Theibaud inspired his painting journey. Being moved by nature and the animals in nature are paramount in the creation process. He is a firm believer that if one feels passionate about the subject matter, it will show in the work. For him it began in the great outdoors and nature. Raised in a military family, as a child he lived in some beautiful locations around the globe. Stephen was born in Verdun, France and spent his younger years moving with his family to Germany, Italy, and Puerto Rico. Relocating to the United States, he has lived in a variety of places from California, New York, Florida, Mississippi, Arkansas, and now Pennsylvania, finding beauty everywhere. Stephen sets out to capture the light or gesture of a particular location or figure, while pushing color saturation and recognizing the color juxtaposition to create a powerful composition all the while painting with minimalistic brush work. He says, “There is something about this simplicity and the look of fresh wet paint that moves my artist soul, and capturing a gesture or object with loose, painterly and competent strokes is what I seek.”

Abraham Lincoln and Making a Case: the Story of a Master We remember Abraham Lincoln for many things, but without his talent at persuasion, in speech and writing, we would remember him for nothing. Look at that talent, first as he demonstrated it in the courtroom, his rise to the White House, and as president, and then at what made him so effective: his personality and intellect, his credibility and clarity, and his masterful use of fact, logic, and emotion. Braving the Elements: Ones You Can’t Do Without, and Some Others You Should Know About You likely already know several chemical elements, such as gold and silver in your jewelry. Atoms of various elements are the basic building blocks of who we are and our physical surroundings. Each cell in the human body contains about 90 trillion astonishingly small atoms. Some are ones of elements that we literally can’t live without. Even a slight shortage of them can cause dire health consequences. Which elements are they? In our surroundings are other elements that have fascinating and functional properties that we rely on, most likely daily. Consider these aspects: How many elements do you see around you? How many chemical elements are there? How many were known to ancient peoples? Have you ever had an MRI? Had a hip or knee replacement? Wear a hearing aid? The last three all involve elements that are some tongue twisters— dysprosium, ytterbium, and praseodymium. Why these funny-sounding names? Checking that will take us on a quick stroll through how chemical elements are named, a process that, surprisingly, has geopolitical dimensions. This abbreviated “trip” presents the opportunity to learn more about the beguiling history, properties, and uses of selected chemical elements. And, you will not be asked to memorize the periodic table, bravely or otherwise! A View from the Bridge Bill Band, a graduate of the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College, was a ship pilot for 41 years on the Chesapeake Bay with the Association of Maryland Pilots. During his lengthy career, Bill was a First Class Pilot on a wide range of commercial ships in excess of 1100 feet and 250,000 tons, US Naval vessels, LNG (liquid natural gas) ships, and even tall ships. Over the years, Bill photo documented many of the conditions he was faced with: boarding and departing vessels in rough sea states, piloting in various weather conditions, dealing with various situations including heavy ship traffic within close proximity, and maintaining safe conditions with commercial fishing vessels and recreational boats. The U.S. Constitution & You It is amazing that the United States of America was built on a single piece of paper. For over 230 years, everything can be traced to the most sacred government document in America, the United States Constitution. Why was the Constitution necessary? What kind of Government did the Constitution create? What rights does the Constitution protect? How has the Constitution expanded over time? How is the Constitution interpreted? In this interactive lecture, discuss these questions once raised by Donald Ritchie, an expert on the Constitution.

FALL 2019
Celebrating Halloween with the “Master of Suspense” It is difficult to believe Alfred Hitchcock, who directed over 50 feature films during his lifetime and became a Hollywood legend, would have his beginnings as the son of a grocer on the outskirts of East London. Nevertheless, he grew up with a talent in creative writing and a fascination with American cinema featuring legends such as Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and D. W. Griffith. During the course of his career, he directed 53 films and gathered 46 Oscar nominations, winning six. His revolutionary style of direction is labeled “Hitchcockian” and was made famous for intrigue and suspense. It is indeed fitting, that during this “bewitching” time of the year, we enter the world of Alfred Hitchcock featuring his life of challenges and triumphs. Wednesday, October 30 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Cultural Center Education Room Presenter: Dr. Don Koones, Ph.D. Cost: $5 Getting to Know the Real Laura Ingalls Wilder On March 30, 1974, the American television audience was introduced to a two-hour pilot movie that later resulted in the 8-year television series Little House on the Prairie. It was based on Laura Ingalls Wilder and her best-selling Little House books for children. Week after week, we shared the adventures of the Ingalls family located in the small, simple home located in Minnesota. But how much of the series was actual facts and how much was fiction? A book titled, Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography by Laura Ingalls Wilder and Pamela Smith Hill, gives an actual in-depth view of the pioneer life of Laura and her early adventures which continue to attract children to American literature. Monday, October 21 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Cultural Center Education Room Presenter: Dr. Don Koones, Ph.D. Cost: $5
Book Review: The Pioneers by David McCullough The American frontier has always been an important subject in the development of this country as a meeting point between savagery and civilization. Horace Greeley saw great opportunity saying “Go West, Young Man, Go West.” Frederick Jackson Turner said that the United States would always be powerful as long as we had a frontier which brings challenge and the best in people. In his new book, The Pioneers, author David McCullough focuses on the Northwest Territory, which would now comprise the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. We are introduced to visionaries such as Manasseh Cutler and Rufus Putnam who deal with many challenges, as well as the issue of slavery to help shape the new nation. Come for an overview of the new book as well as commentary. Reading the book is not required to attend the session. Monday, November 18 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Cultural Center Education Room Presenter: Dr. Don Koones, Ph.D. Cost: $5

This lecture covers “the good, the bad, and the heartwrenching” of a truly indomitable man… far ahead of step with his times, but firmly in step with all times. From its inception, Magnum has been an artists’ cooperative in which its members could choose where and what they wanted to photograph, based on their own personal styles and interests. For over 70 years, Magnum Agency photographers have provided extraordinary coverage of major news events and personalities, places of interest, and the world in which we live; many of photography’s most iconic images have been taken by Magnum members. Among their elite members are: the French humanist photographer, Henri Cartier-Bresson; the Hungarian war photographer and adventurer, Robert Capa; and the American advertising and documentary photographer, Elliott Erwitt.
