SPRING 2017
M
ads Tolling, Mike Abraham, George Ban-Weiss, and Eric Garland came together through the eclectic San Francisco jazz scene. This distinctive quartet integrates the violin into a traditional jazz combo. Their four instruments play unconventional roles to make the music come alive. Violin may act as drum, guitar may take bass lines, and bass may carry the melody. All four players have re-thought their instruments in a fresh way, relying on their instincts to let the music speak for itself, drawing their inspiration from everything from jazz to rock and roll. Most of the music is composed and arranged by bandleader Mads Tolling. Tolling, a Grammy Award-winning performer & arranger, has a distinct melodic and lyrical “groove to his writing.
Mads Tolling and Mads Men take the audience on an auditory exploration, inspired by the revolutionary sounds of the 1950s and 60s. It was in that era that jazz became infused with soulful sounds of early R&B and rock and roll. The result touches on nostalgic, but finds a balance in forward-thinking grooves and melodies.

George Bugatti Portraits of America
G
eorge Bugatti is an American singer, pianist, and songwriter, discovered while performing at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills by The Tonight Show creator Steve Allen. He was quickly singled out to be the prolific comedian’s protégé. Bugatti began studying music at the age of five and attended the prestigious High School of the Performing Arts in New York, followed by the highly competitive Julliard School. He honed his skills as a classical pianist for a short time before tragedy befell the budding musician: an accident caused almost complete loss of all movement and sensitivity in his right hand. He was told he would never play again. After an unwillingness to accept the diagnosis and rehabilitation to his hand, in 2002, against all odds, George received critical acclaim for his NYC Debut at Carnegie Hall. Portraits of America is a musical journey of sound and imagery with songs that include New York, New York, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, By The Time I Get to Phoenix, Georgia On My Mind, Route 66, Do You Know The Way to San Jose, Walking in Memphis, and New York State of Mind. A truly timely music experience! MAR 7

Valery Gergiev Conducts Mozart and Tchaikovsky
Opera: Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov
Mariss Jansons Conducts Richard Strauss
Length: 1 hour 15 minutes
Length: 2 hour 27 minutes
Length: 1 hour 33 minutes
At the Verbier Festival, a prestigious cast is reunited on stage at the Salle des Combins with the Verbier Festival Orchestra to perform works by Mozart and Tchaikovsky. Three musicians — Valery Gergiev, one of the most prominent figures in the classical music world, and two generations of pianists, Denis Matsuev and Daniil Trifonov—join forces to perform Mozart’s Concerto for Three Pianos and orchestra. To close the concert, Valery Gergiev conducts Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, one of the most famous works by the Russian composer, which was a posthumous triumph.
From the Teatro Regio in Torino, Mussorgsky’s opera in four acts stars Orlin Anastassov in the leading role and Gianandrea Noseda conducting the Orchestra del Teatro Regio. The libretto is based on two works: Karamzin’s History of the Russian State and Pushkin’s Boris Godunov. Boris Godunov is set in Russia and Poland from 1598 to 1605. Several historical events are recounted, in a similar way to a Shakespearean historical drama. The staging is sober and the scenery so simple that the contrast with the shimmering costumes is striking.
“Music has been dreaming for too long; we want to wake up now. We were sleepwalking; we want to be conscious daydreamers.” It is this quote from Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra that opens the partition by Strauss. The program continues with two pieces composed years later: The Metamorphoses, an absolute masterpiece following the disasters of WWII and the destruction of Munich, and Suites of Waltzes for orchestra, whose elements come from the last act of the opera that made him famous almost 25 years ago: Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose).

I, Claude Monet Length: 1 hour 30 minutes A fresh look at one of the world’s favorite artists through his own words using letters and other private writings. Shot on location in Paris, London, Normandy, and Venice, I, Claude Monet reveals new insight into the man who not only painted the picture that gave birth to impressionism, but who was perhaps the most influential and successful painter of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite this, Monet’s life is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sundazzled canvases, suffered from feelings of depression, loneliness, even contemplated suicide. As his art developed and his love of gardening led to the glories of his garden at Giverney, his humor, insight, and love of life is revealed.
MAR 23 Thursday, 10:00 a.m.
Yuri Temirkanov Conducts Haydn and Shostakovich: Babi Yar Symphony Length: 1 hour 27 minutes The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Yuri Temirkanov performs Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13, “Babi Yar.” The Symphony No. 94 is best known as the “Surprise” Symphony. The wish of the composer was to add some variations with simple overtones and occasional dramatic tones. Yuri Temirkanov is a Russian repertoire specialist. Symphony No. 13 “Babi Yar” was written to condemn the slaughter of more than 33,000 people, including many Jews, in Babi Yar’s ravine in Ukraine. This mass crime, dating back to 1941, was denied by the Soviet authorities for many years.

Sir Simon Rattle Conducts Ligeti, Wagner, Sibelius, Debussy, and Ravel Length: 1 hour 40 minutes At the Lucerne Festival, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker continue their series Moving to Modern Times. The concert starts off with György Ligeti’s Atmosphères, fading into Richard Wagner’s Overture to Lohengrin. Jean Sibelius’ 4th Symphony follows and then Claude Debussy’s Jeux and Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé. Sir Simon Rattle challenges the audience by stretching the musical arc from Wagner to Ligeti: an exciting program combination resulting in one of the highlights of this festival.

Carol Herren Foerster Carol Herren Foerster has been sharing her drawings for more than 25 years, but she recently recommitted herself to her art. Unexpected family obligations arising early in her career made it impossible for Carol to finish her teaching certification, despite finishing a Bachelor’s degree in art. Later, a work-related injury left her legally disabled with radial tunnel syndrome in her right arm. Carol says it’s no coincidence that drawing is the one activity that doesn’t aggravate the disorder. The fine detail of her work is further evidence that drawing is what she is called to do. Since her own children are now grown, she enjoys the freedom to pursue her drawing more seriously. She also credits a sense of artistic liberation to social media. Since posting her work on Facebook, the overwhelmingly positive responses have allowed her to let go of self-imposed inhibition surrounding her abilities as an artist. Her confidence has increased over the past few years, during which she has not only improved her skills, but she has also entered more shows, won awards, and has garnered a spot in the Art of the State Show at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. Socrates Café
– Socrates
Socrates Café encourages spirited discussion about issues and topics that challenge our beliefs about contemporary society and who we are as human beings. Our quest is not to arrive at answers or consensus but rather to develop more and better questions. We seek clarification of our own thinking and careful and respectful consideration of the views of others as we sift through, sort out, and attempt to arrive at new insights into the topics under discussion. If you enjoy thinking about and questioning commonly accepted assumptions (even your own), if you are willing to challenge the taken-for-granted authority of any position or representation of fact or truth, join us at Socrates Café.

Buffalo Bill in Lancaster: A Cowboy Celebrity Helps Rewrite a Local Story Lancastrians loved William F. Cody, aka Buffalo Bill. They packed the Fulton for his premiere in 1873 and flocked to outdoor arenas when his “Wild West Shows” later came to town. Yet 110 years before Cody’s Lancaster debut, the Paxton gang had broken into the Lancaster jail (later the foundation of the Fulton Theatre) and murdered the last of the Conestoga Indians. And so when Cody took the Fulton stage in a show about killing Indians on the Western frontier, he was indirectly paying homage to the very spot where the long process of “Indian removal” had begun. Explore this uncanny connection and learn the real-life story behind the man whose exploits inspired the musical Annie Get Your Gun, onstage at the Fulton this season. Thursday, February 2 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Cultural Center Education Room Presenter: Leslie Stainton, author, Staging Ground, a History of the Fulton Theatre; Jack Brubaker, The Scribbler, LNP Cost: no charge
Meet the Real Vikings Despite the cartoon image, the Vikings never wore horned helmets, but they did leave a fascinating cultural legacy to Western civilization during the early medieval era. Based in Scandinavia, the Vikings supplied mercenaries for the imperial court in Constantinople. Viking traders ranged as far east as Baghdad and hardy adventurers founded Viking settlements as far west as Newfoundland. This program goes beyond myth and legend to paint a colorful picture of the real Vikings: sailors, craftsmen, warrior and (by the 11th century) converted Christian kings of northern Europe.
