MUSIC FOR EVERYONE
Community Chorus Music For Everyone (MFE) is a non-profit organization in Lancaster providing millions of dollars in grants, scholarships, and direct programs to support the arts in Lancaster. Willow Valley Communities first became involved with MFE through Keys to the City, one of MFE’s most visible annual programs. Approximately 15 brightly decorated pianos, sponsored by Willow Valley Communities and other area businesses, are placed throughout Lancaster from May to October. It’s a bright, visible commitment Willow Valley Communities has to MFE, the arts, and the city of Lancaster. Willow Valley Communities believes so much in the importance of music education that we have also partnered with MFE to create a special music mentoring initiative for the School District of Lancaster. MFE provides an instrument for every 4th or 5th grade student, mentored by a Willow Valley Communities resident, who plays the piano, clarinet, flute, trumpet, or violin. Developing musical skills not only gives a child joyful activity that will last a lifetime, music has also been found to help children develop in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Willow Valley Communities is delighted to be associated with Music For Everyone and bring the Music For Everyone Community Chorus to our Cultural Center. WillowValleyCommunities.org

Exhibition on Screen – The Impressionists… And the Man Who Made Them
Sir Simon Rattle Conducts Bernstein’s Wonderful Town
Mariss Jansons Conducts Encores with Vadim Repin
Length: 1 hour 34 minutes
Length: 1 hour 30 minutes
Sir Simon Rattle with the Berliner Philharmonie performing works from Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. They will be joined by sought-after singers: Thomas Hampson, Kim Criswell, Simone Sauphanor, and Karl Daymond, performing Bernstein’s Wonderful Town. Bernstein’s score combines witty pastiches of various popular musical styles from the 1930s with some of his most popular songs creating a musical love letter to New York City. The work is infused with the kind of edgy, intense rhythms that were the composer’s trademark and remain synonymous with the dynamism of the city itself.
Thrilling encores with Mariss Jansons and violinist Vadim Repin at Walbühne. Since the Berliner Philharmoniker rarely performs an encore, for something different, they perform a selection of encores in one program. With virtuosic playing, Repin dazzles the audience with showpieces including Kreisler’s Tambourin chinois and Gardel’s famous tango Por una cabeza following Paganini’s Variations on Carnevale di Venezia. Orchestral pieces range from Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin to Sibelius’s melancholy Valse triste and some operatic excerpts. They all join in a spirited rendition of the only genuine encore, Paul Lincke’s Berliner Luft.
From the Musees Du Luxembourg and D’Orsay Paris, National Gallery London and Philadelphia Museum of Art, uncover the story behind works by Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Degas, Pissarro and more. Who were they? Why and how did they paint? This film secured access to a major exhibition focusing on the man credited with inventing impressionism: 19th-century art collector Paul Durand-Ruel. It was his decision to exhibit the Impressionists in NY in 1886 that introduced enlightened wealthy Americans to this modern French painting. JUN 13

The Music of Strangers Length: 1 hour 36 minutes A documentary telling the extraordinary story of The Silk Road Ensemble, an international musical collective created by cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Named for the ancient trade route linking Asia, Africa and Europe, the ensemble exemplifies music’s ability to blur international boundaries, blend disparate cultures, and inspire hope. The film follows an everchanging lineup of performers drawn from the ensemble’s more than 50 instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, arrangers, visual artists, and storytellers as they gather in locations across the world, exploring the ways art can both preserve traditions and shape cultural evolution. Blending performance footage, personal interviews and archival film, the film focuses on the journeys of a small group of Silk Road Ensemble mainstays from across the globe to create an intensely personal chronicle of passion, talent, and sacrifice, painting a vivid portrait of a bold musical experiment and a global search for the ties that bind.

Paavo Järvi Conducts Haydn, Mozart and Sibelius Length: 2 hours 2 minutes On his 90th birthday, Menahem Pressler joins Paavo Järvi and the Orchestre de Paris at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. There have been quite a few child prodigies in the history of music, but an equally noteworthy phenomenon is that of a musician who, after an 80-year-long performing career, finds himself still capable of continuing his concert life, especially in front of large audiences. Menahem Pressler is one of these lucky few, a “venerable prodigy,” who after 53 years as the legendary pianist of the Beaux-Arts trio (from 1955 to 2008), is now enjoying an incredible musical comeback, returning him once more to the solo career he long enjoyed.

Joanna Osman Drawing is not what one sees but what one can make others see. - Edgar Degas Joanna Osman believes portrait drawing is one of the most rewarding hobbies you could have. When she’s not working at Willow Valley Communities Cultural Center pool as a lifeguard or studying massage therapy in school, this is how she spends her time. Joanna says portrait drawing connects the artist to the person he or she is drawing on paper, and allows the viewer to do the same. She started drawing as a young girl, just for fun — horses, objects and landscapes — but she always found drawing faces especially challenging. Capturing a person’s character and the proportions of one’s face was very difficult for her, so she avoided it. However, one day she stumbled upon a mesmerizing photograph of a girl that she really wanted to try to draw. It turned out better than she expected, so she tried another, and another, until she was
hooked. From then on, she loved trying to put emotions and character onto paper. Little details like wrinkles, freckles, long beards, worn hats, and piercing eyes tell a story that no words could ever tell. She has taken a fundamentals of art class at Lancaster Bible College and learned different forms of art like watercolor, pastel, and acrylic. The class allowed her to broaden her knowledge of art history and the different types of art, but nothing compares to her love of pencil drawing. She continues to fine-tune her pencil portrait art, and hopes that her work will allow people to feel the emotion in each of her pieces. JUNE 25 – AUGUST 6

Art Gallery Robert E. Buchanan & Barbara Pillette Buchanan Robert E. Buchanan The work of Robert E. Buchanan reflects his love of nature and design. His goal is to create extraordinary images from everyday experiences and places. Whether working with watercolor, oil, or acrylic, Robert’s work shows a mastery of technique and expression. Light, atmosphere, and mood are key elements in all his paintings. His award-winning portraits exhibit likeness, as well as beautiful composition. Born and raised in Norristown, PA, Robert E. Buchanan received his M.F.A. from Syracuse University. His work is in the Harley-Davidson Museum, and he has received over 75 awards for his paintings. Numerous magazines and books have showcased his paintings and his work is in prominent collections all across the United States. Barbara Pillette Buchanan While viewing landscapes, Barbara Pillette Buchanan experiences a longing for completeness. Through her paintings, she is able to express this feeling, along with the beauty and timelessness she sees in the earth around her. Her chosen medium is pastel. Her manner of working is realistic, with attention to detail. She achieves this by working on a sanded surface designed to hold many layers of pastels. Some areas are carefully blended, while other sections are interwoven strokes and dots of color, creating a richly textured surface. Barbara is fortunate to be able to use this gift of God to do work with such personal meaning and fulfillment. Barbara has won numerous awards, and is in many private and corporate collections, and exhibition halls, such as the Reading Art Museum, The Governor’s Mansion, Lancaster Art Museum, The Governor’s Award Invitational, Living Light Gallery, Creative York, Martin Library, The Pennsylvania Arts Experience, the Outdoor Country Club, and the York Country Club. Her work is in the collection of Reader’s Digest, Susquehanna-Pfaltzgraff, Hershey Medical Center, Lebouitz and Associates, and OSS. She graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Geraldine Cosgrave, Gables Resident It’s appropriate that Geraldine titles her pastel art display as “Pastel Peregrinations,” which means “Pastel Wanderings.” She was born and raised in Ireland and graduated from Trinity College, Dublin. She immigrated to Canada and then to New Jersey in 1976. Drawing and painting have always been a part of Geraldine’s life, but marriage and a family came first. Art played a minor role—until the family was grown. As an artist, Geraldine has always searched out the best educational opportunities, both in the U.S. and Canada. She attended classes regularly with teachers of note, namely Christina Debarry and Frank Zuccarrelli, and she enrolled in workshops at home and abroad with Elizabeth Mowry. Over time, her knowledge, and her love of the pastel medium grew. Working with it gives Geraldine infinite pleasure, with the chance to develop wonderful shadows and light that she sees in the world around her. It also gives her the opportunity to express her feelings about a special place, object, or person, and to have people also enjoy and appreciate whatever it is they see in her work. Geraldine has entered juried shows throughout the area, receiving over twenty awards, including two Pastel Scholarships. She is also a signature member of the Pastel Society of America.

A FAMILY LEGACY THE HISTORY OF WILLOW VALLEY A young man in his mid-20s selling chickens and eggs to local farmers markets in 1945 was just the beginning of years of success for Willow Valley. Customers came from miles away to get the best chicken in Lancaster County. Over the years that tradition has continued, serving in an exceptional way, and making everyone feel a sense of family. This has always been a strong part of Willow Valley’s success for more than 50 years. Session II: Where to Begin... How About at the Beginning? 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. “It was a dark and stormy night...” is, perhaps, the most cliché opening for a piece of fiction... but how did it get that way? Examine some of the most famous openings in fiction—novels and short stories—to see how and why they’re so great. (Or maybe they’re not!) Then, try your hand at taking the first step toward an inspiring beginning.
Session I: Image vs. Idea: Expression, Revelation and Celebration 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Poetry is the celebration of the human experience. But too often, poems become bogged down in explanation and ideas, rather than images, expressions, and observations. In this session, explore poems that master the image, and build a few of your own.
Session III: Keeping it Real, or, Truth vs. Fact in the Personal Essay 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. What does it take to “tell the truth but tell it slant” as Emily Dickinson states? If we avoid facts in an essay, are we lying? When we move details out of order, are we denying what really happened? Join us as we read a few short personal essays that truly deliver the experiences of the writers who created them, then outline a personal piece for your own life story.

How Old Is That Photograph? Most of us can determine the approximate age of 20th century photographs based on clothing, hairstyles, automobiles, and other identifying clues, even if we do not know the people in the picture. But 19th century photos are often a mystery. There were so many different types of photographs— daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, carte de visite, and cabinet cards—and nothing about their clothing or hair styles is familiar to us. Whether you are stumped by old photographs of your family, or have a general interest in old images, you will learn some quick and easy tips to determine what type of photographs you have, how to date them, and, surprisingly, how to identify the people in the photographs.
