WILLUNGA ---GAZETTE---

Gazette via email

A monthly publication of the Willunga Business and Tourism Association Inc As a group, each of the committee members has undertaken at least one major area of responsibility; and the amount of work completed by WBTA this year is testament to that. It is only when time is taken to reflect on the last twelve months that the realisation sinks in that it has been a very busy year for WBTA – maybe too busy. The challenge for the new committee will be to work a twelve month program from the new three year Strategic Plan, and not try to accomplish everything in one year.

WILLUNGA BUSINESS & TOURISM ASSOCIATION AGM Tuesday August 25th 5.30pm Alma Hotel All members and would-be members welcome. Nibbles provided President’s report All positions will be declared vacant. Nominations for President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer will be called for. Five other committee members to be elected including an honorary position for local Tour Down Under Coordinator. Nomination forms available from the Secretary – Please contact Tom Laing (tomlaing@gmail.com)

News from the WBTA Chairman Dave Greenslade As mentioned in the previous Gazette, two of our long standing committee members, Tom Laing and Lorraine Poole will be retiring at the AGM. We wish them well in the coming years and no doubt their talents will not go unnoticed by other groups in the town. As it currently stands, the committee comprises of: Dave Greenslade (President/Chair), Angela Gill (Vice President), Tom Laing (Secretary/TDU Coordinator), Tom Parker (Treasurer), Helen Mouneimne (Gazette editor), Ben Barber, Angela Lisman, Lorraine Poole, Barnaby Scantlebury, Hazel Wainwright and Anthony Whaite.

Achievements over the last twelve months include: continued publication of the Willunga Gazette; the refining of willunga.com; the organising of the Willunga end of Stage 5 TDU and the inaugural Light Up Willunga; the Discover Willunga Fair; Public meetings concerning the Bank S.A. closure, the fate of trees in Willunga and High St development; the active support for the establishment of the Bendigo Bank branch in Willunga; Business After 5 events; representation on the High St reference group, the City of Onkaparinga Economic Development Forum and the Rec Park President’s group. The Strategic Plan will expand on all of these and highlight areas that need refreshing/revisiting. The committee is currently exploring the notion of a Willunga Small Business and Community Awards project and a sub-committee has been working away on this. Additionally, WBTA is leading a representative group focusing on ways to support the many and diverse events that occur in the town. We are looking to increase our membership. Membership is open not only to small business but also interested residents or more particularly those retired business people who are looking to impart their accumulated wisdom in a practical and collegiate way. For a twelve month fee of $25 for an individual or $50 for a business, a member will be able to enter an interesting world of country town happenings and maybe influence some quite impressive outcomes. WBTA opens the door to not only local decision making that affects all residents of Willunga but also provides an avenue through to the City of Onkaparinga decision makers. Contact Tom Laing (tomlaing@gmail.com) for membership application information. In summary, the six objectives of our Strategic Plan are: -To provide effective leadership and proficient administration -To actively and widely promote the business and tourism benefits of Willunga. -To support and encourage responsible infrastructure development in Willunga… continued on page 4

Your Community News Local Business Profile: Nicholas Eid Lawyer Nicholas Eid recently opened a legal practice in Willunga. He has spent the last ten years working in the profession in Adelaide, initially in private practice as a solicitor, and subsequently as a barrister. He moved to Willunga looking for a change in lifestyle and to fulfill an interest in becoming a small business owner. He recognized a deficiency of professional services in the region. There is a real need for improved legal services in regional areas. Prior to commencing legal practice Nicholas spent many years working as a police officer in South Australia and as a senior manager for the Commonwealth government with the Department of Immigration. His experience in these roles enables him to offer skills and understanding in dealing with criminal law and migration law problems. Nicholas also has a wealth of knowledge in family law. He has worked as an advocate in court running trials for clients trying to resolve complex personal and property disputes associated with the breakdown of their relationships. Family law is perhaps the most complex of all forms of law, as relationship breakdowns are often accompanied by high levels of personal and emotional distress not only for the individual involved, but also their wider families in supporting their loved ones. Sensitive management of a client’s situation is critical to achieving a positive outcome for them. Nicholas is also able to offer services to clients in other fields of law such as the preparation of Wills, estate planning, and general commercial law. Too often people delay putting into place a Will until it is too late. Not having a Will can cause significant distress to those left behind because of uncertainty surrounding a person’s wishes. These issues are hard for many of us to confront, but a failure to do so can leave a lasting impact on those we care about most. It is important to understand that the key to success in legal matters is early intervention.

Spring Gardening in Willunga with a Season of Growing. As blossoms appear amid the cold winter chill it is a sign that the season of Spring is just around the corner. Willunga Uniting Church has many celebrations for the gardener in mind this spring. First there is the SALA exhibition, which features wonderful floral images by Anthi, showing all of August and September. Next there is the fresh and seasonal Spring Fair. With loads of plants on sale for gardeners. Lots of market stalls,

Devonshire teas, free face painting, children’s activities, crafts and a Model railway display of South Australian trains. Put September 5th on your calendar, 10am to 3pm, for this must see spring event. Plans are also being developed for a children’s garden. The proposed garden site is next to the church, which will have spaces and garden beds especially for children. This will use local materials including slate, wooden logs and sticks. The proposed plans are now up for consultation. There will be planned workshops and feedback is being sought from all ages on the children’s garden design. Kids can get active, growing and most likely very grubby in this project. We need their ideas and visions on the garden. Plans for the children’s garden will be on show at Bethany Hall during the SALA exhibition and Spring Fair. So come by and take a look and put in your suggestions. The Season of Growing festivities kick off with the SALA exhibition commencing August 1st until September 27th. Opening Hours are Thursday and Friday from 9am to 12 midday.

Your Community News of Australia’s current greenhouse emissions. If the Galilee Basin was to be considered a country, it would be the seventh largest source of carbon emissions in the world. If there is a tipping point for global warming, and we have not reached it yet, this will definitely do it. The Abbot Point Coal Port expansion required to cope with all this coal will involve massive increases in the numbers of coal tankers passing through the reef and the dredging of 1.6 million cubic meters of

Great Barrier Reef sea floor. The reef is the home of endangered sea turtles, dugongs, snub nosed dolphins and the migratory path of the humpback whales as well as a major international tourist destination, fish nursery and national icon. Adani, India’s largest power company is behind the project. They have been fined 40 million dollars by the Indian Government for bribery and corruption, large scale mangrove destruction, ground water

contamination, river blockages and 100 000 tones of fly ash pollution in their port development in Mundra India. They also have a record of worker exploitation. Already 12 of the 20 largest global banks have ruled out funding the project because of the environmental impacts involved and viability concerns with low coal prices and rapidly declining coal export markets. In the last 18 months 400 million dollars has been divested from the

In May, we conducted over 100 actions at 60 Commonwealth Bank branches around Australia and following this up in August, and as long and as often as necessary, we will convince the Commonwealth Bank that it is in everyones interest to move on from fossil fuels. -------
