People power restores local banking presence Calls from Southern suburbs residents to restore local banking services have been successful with the opening of a Bendigo Bank operated center in Willunga. The Willunga Customer Service Centre, operated by Aldinga Beach Community Bank Branch, will provide full banking services five days a week, following branch closures of other banks earlier this year. Community Bank Chairman Ron Logan said consultation with local residents and business owners resulted in the right solution for the town. “The Willunga Customer Service Centre has opened its doors today because the local community wanted to restore a local banking presence,” Mr Logan said. “There has been consultation with a number of groups in Willunga and surrounding areas to understand their banking needs and we’ve responded to what people are asking for with the Customer Service Centre. “Opening the Willunga Customer Service Centre today demonstrates how our actions define us more than our words ever will,” he said. Mr Logan said Bendigo Bank’s unique Community Bank model was established in response to a growing trend in major banks reducing their branch presence, particularly across regional Australia.
“Sixteen years on, and the initial mission for this unique banking models still remains. “We continue to discuss the needs of people in metropolitan and regional communities, including restoring local, full service banking facilities and the need for funding infrastructure and education projects, large or small. “When you bank with Aldinga Beach Community Bank Branch, a portion of profits is returned to support local community projects, such as providing funding to Mid Coast Little Athletics to purchase sporting equipment and Generation Together, a mentoring program for local primary school aged children to enhance their social and academic skills through community engagement. “Banking is about more than just dollars and cents, and bricks and mortar; our Bank feeds into the prosperity of the communities and interest groups to which our customers belong. Without strong communities, we are weakened as individuals and as a society, and are all the poorer for it. “As a part of a nationally operated banking group – Australia’s fifth largest - we have a privileged status in the community, but with that comes an obligation to be bigger than just a bank. And we take that obligation seriously.” Continued page 4

Your Community News Local Business Profile – The Old Bush Inn The Old Bush Inn, known as the ‘Top Pub‘ to locals, recently changed hands with Gavin Collings and his partner, Christina taking the reigns in December last year. We caught up with the pair to learn more about what drew them to the Fleurieu and our heritage pub on the hill. As a New Zealander and an American, what drew you to this area? When we lived in Adelaide, we spent a lot of time in Willunga and McLaren Vale with close friends who had a B&B on California Road. We noticed what a strong sense of community there was and the combination of the local wine region and nearby beaches was really attractive. After moving to Melbourne for a few years, we wanted a place by the beach to come home to. We built our house at Sellicks Beach in 2010 with a plan to come home within 5 years, and here we are! The Old Bush Inn has a lot of history dating back to 1839. What attracted you to the pub? Gavin’s family ran pubs and clubs in New Zealand, and he always wanted to own his own pub. We had a heritage or country pub in mind. The Old Bush Inn’s heritage is important to Willunga and we feel a great deal of responsibility to retain and preserve it. We’ve recently had local artist Jess Patrick create some classic line drawings of the pub to use in our branding and advertising – pictured here! What do you hope people will experience when they come to the pub? Since we’ve arrived we’ve tried to do two simple things –make the pub more welcoming and expand and improve the menu and quality of the food. We hope people feel they always get a welcoming smile, great service and a fantastic meal. We also continue to work with local wine makers to develop a wine list that allows locals and visitors alike to discover the best wine our region has to offer.

A Local Perspective
Written by Dave Greenslade Monday, April 20th will be remembered as the day the Aldinga Beach Community Bank (ABCB) officially set up a customer service centre in Willunga at Ellis Saxon’s Willunga Pharmacy.
A free sausage sizzle during the day for passer8s by and an official launch in the evening, sealed the occasion. This was a triumph on a number of levels. Not for the first time it demonstrated how the Willunga community will see something through when it believes the right thing needs to be done. Challenged by Ron Logan, chair of the ABCB board, to raise the funds required to justify the presence of a Bendigo Bank agency in Willunga, the community did just that. In a time span measuring only a few short months, the Willunga and surrounding communities, as good as made the target in footings and pledged funds. It was a triumph too for the board of the ABCB, who stood behind the community all the way and worked very hard to convince the parent company to accept an unprecedented circumstance – that a community bank branch would undertake to auspice a service centre in a neighbouring district. Individuals who started the ball rolling, people like Richard Brown and Steve Nye, must be feeling mighty pleased with the way things have turned out. Editors notes: Well done to everyone in the community who helped make this possible!
Willunga.com The revamped, updated www.willunga.com website was launched at Willunga Beaute on Tuesday, April 21st by its architect and builder, WBTA committee member, Barnaby Scantlebury. Barnaby introduced us to the new logo and then led us through the facilities that the website offers. This is a website for all of us in Willunga. Businesses,
It can be utilised by all residents, associations, clubs, schools and churches. Its capacity to advertise and inform is limited only by the degree of interaction by the Willunga community. So click on to www.willunga.com and do some exploring. It has enormous scope – let’s make full use of it!!

Your Community News Recipe of the Month: Mothers Day French Toast with Berry Compote – Spoil your Mum with this delicious breakfast treat! The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and the earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, the early Christians in England celebrated a day to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. By a religious order the holiday was later expanded in its scope to include all mothers, and named as the Mothering Sunday. Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter), "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England. During this time many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday, the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch. Today, Mother's Day is a day honoring mothers, celebrated on various days in many places around the world. It is the day when you acknowledge your
mothers contribution in your life and pay a tribute to her, often with flowers and gifts. Or a beautiful breakfast like this momths recipe!

Your Community News definitely lifts the average buyers’ property prospects. ‘In February the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) decided to cut the official cash rate (OCR) by 25 basis points, bringing it down to 2.25 per cent. This was the first change in the OCR in almost a year and a half, and it made waves in the property market’ said Nick van Vliet. ‘It's important to research the cash rate, whether you're looking to retire or open an investment portfolio. Doing your homework can offer you some insight into how to make the most of the current environment - and alert you to what to do if there's another cut’.
WBTA 2015 Small Business & Community Awards Launched at the same venue on the same night, by WBTA committee members and joint ‘brainchilds’ of this exciting venture, Angela Gill and Angela Lisman, the inaugural Small Business and Community Awards program is ready to go. While its a ‘toe in the water’ project, both Angelas with the backing of fellow committee members, are confident that the notion of recognising the achievements of small business in Willunga, and the contributions made by individuals and ‘not for profit’ groups, clubs and associations, will be
embraced by the community. The Gazette will keep all residents up to date with progress -----
Now is the time to get a foot on the property ladder First National Real Estate Nick van Vliet says low official cash rates mean a wealth of opportunity for first homebuyers, people who consider themselves long-term renters, and property investors - both residential and commercial. The Reserve Bank of Australia's official cash rate has a range of effects across the economy, and it
When interest rates go down, it doesn't directly drag the interest rates set by lenders down, however the OCR does guide their direction. Speaking about the February rate cut, CoreLogic RP Data's head of research Tim Lawless said that interest rates following suit took the interest rates to their lowest point since 1968. ‘This means nearunprecedented opportunities for Australians to buy real estate at great value, and people aren't hesitant to take advantage. Demand appears to have been reenergised by less expensive debt’ said Nick van Vliet. Separate statistics from CoreLogic RP Data showed that in the leadup to Easter this year,
auctions were breaking new records for volume. This occurred in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney, which is the capital enjoying the strongest auction clearance rates. ‘Evidently, there are a lot of positives flying around for Australian property at the moment. The OCR generally acts as a stimulus for the wider economy, and it appears that at the moment a particular shot in the arm is being given to property’ said Nick van Vliet. ‘Even though prices across Australia have been generally rising for property, the cash rate situation can actually make it easier for people to buy a home, despite high prices. Also, first homebuyers can still claim the benefits of first homebuyer grants’. -----
Trees for Life at Willunga Fair! Native plants were sold at the Willunga Trees for Life stall at the Discover Willunga Fair (and I proudly bought some – stay tuned for updates!!) All plants are local species, grown from local seed, and very suitable for planting on farms, properties and home gardens in the Willunga area. According to the experts at Trees For Life

Your Community News May and June are the ideal months to plant natives, as this allows the plants to take full advantage of winter rains to establish themselves and develop their roots prior to summer. Because of this, Willunga Trees for Life were encouraging everyone to buy our plants at the Fair rather than wait until later in the year. It is possible that the traditional July sale will be discontinued (lets hope not as these plants/trees are absolutely beautiful) I’d like to add that everyone at the Trees For Life stand were a pleasure to deal with. Kate Washington has dug deep to ensure she was successful for the second annual scholarship. Using organic methods, Ms Washington will be farming heirloom vegetables on a reclaimed vineyard block in McLaren Vale; a mere 5km from the heart of Willunga. Ms Washington, 31, applied for the inaugural $10,000 scholarship in 2014. After finding she was unsuccessful, she sunk her life savings into a small trial plot to learn what would grow successfully and reapplied for the second Young Farmers Scholarship. ‘Winning the scholarship has allowed
me to realise something I’ve been actively working towards for the past 3 years,’ says Ms Washington. ‘To be able to run a small vegetable farm, to be able to trial different methods and to grow healthy food. ‘I want to grow different varieties of food to get people excited about buying local food and cooking it at home. ‘The access to formal mentorship and advice also just makes it easier to ask all those burning questions I have and to learn the things that are important to the success of my farm. ‘I’m just feeling the responsibility now of being able to move forward and not have the excuse of not having enough money to do it. It’s made me feel quite free actually.’

Your Community News The Willunga RSL Dawn Service Society.
The ANZAC day service was well attended in Willunga. Leading up to the service, cars were bumper to bumper from Aldinga and McLarenVale. Mother Nature was incredibly kind & kept the skies clear, despite it being very stormy & wet the night before. Some thought there may have been 1200-1400 people in attendance, whereas others said there were upward of 2000. Whatever the numbers, it was wonderful to have such incredible support from our small community & its surrounding districts.

Your Community News The Discover Willunga Fair The lovely weather brought a happy crowd of fair goers to the Willunga Recreation Park on Sunday the 3rd of May, to enjoy the exhibits and the activities on offer, marking the second of these occasions following the success of the inaugural 2014 W175 event. Outside – flanked by a wonderful array of vintage cars, buses and a very old steam traction engine, you could enter a rose competition, an almond cracking contest or find out who could grow the largest pumpkin! You could try your hand at croquet, sample some wine or purchase some goodies or buy some good tucker. Inside – the Show Hall was fitted out with historical exhibits, celebrating the centenary of the extension to Willunga of the railway. Exhibits ranged from model railways, archival footage of the Willunga Railway and displays of historical memorabilia. In the main stadium local ‘not for profit’ organisations and some small businesses showcased their wares, advertised for membership, ran various raffles and provided the fair goers with a taste of what is on offer to those residents of Willunga looking to contribute to the town.
Jamae Raw gave us all a treat with a dance medley from ‘Grease’, Marty took time off from Tribe FM to sing us some songs and the jolly crew from the Fleurieu Folk Festival stall kept us entertained all day. The Willunga Business and Tourism Association put together a planning committee made up of several from last year’s W175 planning group and added representation from WBTA and the National Trust. It decided to put a focus once again on the strong heritage of the town and in particular the centenary of the Willunga Railway – May being History Month.

Yank Kick Start Their Season
Yankalilla win their first game for the season with a dominant first half. If they had kicked straight early in the second quarter their half time lead would have been even more substantial. Lewis was dominant early and gave the Yankallila on-ballers a strong target up forward. Willunga nullified him after quarter time but then Fittock and Kane cut loose and dominated their open forward lines. Lewis kicked the first goal of the game but Butcher immediately got it back for the Demons. James and Garrett provided run and carry for their respective sides as both defences held firm for the opening fifteen minutes. Lewis’ fifty metre goal lifted his side and the Tigers piled on four unanswered goals in the final ten minutes of the quarter.

The last was kicked by Sidebottom and should have been touched on the line as the siren sounded – but was not.

Butcher missed an early opportunity for Willunga but Lewis did not at the other end.
11
Your Community News James’ run and carry and pace set up two opportunities for the Yankalilla forwards. Garrett’s hard run and ball skills through the centre almost brought a quick Willunga response but his kick drifted wide. The Tigers dominated the next ten minutes but only registered a string of behinds. Fittock’s class finally prevailed for the visitors and within two minute he kicked two himself and handed out another. Crate set up a rare Willunga forward move at the 22 minute mark and Butcher did not let him down. Groom defended desperately for Willunga but they trailed by 5 goals 7 at half time. Yankalilla’s inaccurate kicking gave Willunga a sniff going into the third quarter. Willunga butchered an opportunity immediately after half time. Yank made them pay by kicking two accurately. Young showed dash and twice streamed out of the back lines for the home side but Butcher’s long shot hit the post. Garrett, Crate, Boyd and Beath gave Willunga a lift but the tigers defence held tight. Crate goaled from just outside the square after good forward line pressure by Hayes and Standfield. When Butcher took a spectacular mark in the goal square and kicked truly just before three quarter time, he gave the Demons the scoring edge in the Premiership
Quarter. Willunga won a tightly contested fourth quarter too, but the end result was never in doubt. Both sides had their opportunities in the first ten minutes but squandered them. Boyd kicked a neat goal for Willunga but Hosking saved a strong Groom spoil to get it straight back. From the centre bounce Hayes gave to Standfield who gave to Garrett who kicked truly. Collier had a chance to get Willunga a bit closer but his long kick drifted wide. Willunga kept the ball in their forward lines but when they were at their most dangerous a Cook tackle saved the day. Butcher kicked the last goal of the day at the twenty minute mark then both defences locked down and restricted scoring opportunities for the opposition forwards. The game was played in good spirit in front of a good sized crowd. The Yankallila players were very excited when the final siren rang to confirm their well deserved victory.

Best regards, Elizabeth
My Autumn crop is well and truly on its way. I can definitely say that I prefer this time of year for my veggie patch.
To the Editor: I have a suggestion for the May recipe section of the Willunga Gazette. As its Mothers Day in May, I wanted to suggest a French Toast recipe. I don’t have one in particular that I suggest, but I have fond memories of making this for my mum every Mothers Day with my Dad as a teenager.
Hi Helen,
I wanted to send you a quick note thanking you for the Easter edition of the Willunga Gazette. My grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed colouring in their bunnies. I personally think it was
Carrots, brocolli, cauliflower, celery, chic peas, broad beans, broccoli, garic, onions, sweet potatoes, baby spinach and lots of herbs. There has been some success so far – stay tuned!
Hopefully suggestions are allowed. Thanks, Charlotte Response: Hi Charlotte, Thank you for your email and your suggestion. I most certainly encourage suggestions as that is why I introduced the recipe section initially. The link you have with the French Toast and Mothers Day is great!

Letters to the Editor
I currently have the following growing:
Enjoy the recipe Charlotte. Dedicated to all the Mums. Hi Helen, How is the green thumb going? I am curious to hear about your veggie garden. Cheers, James
Veggie Garden: Did you know? Did you know that a medium-size carrot has 25 calories, 6 grams of carbs, and 2 grams of fiber. The veggie is an excellent source of vitamin A, providing more than 200% of your daily requirement in just one carrot. Carrots are loaded with betacarotene, a natural chemical that the body changes into vitamin A. The deeper orange the carrot, the more betacarotene you’re getting. Also, the carrots first use was for medicine, not food! Carrots were grown to cure a variety of ailments! Do you have a fun fact? Send it throgh to me.
