Your Community News La Terre is a family business run by new owners Sandrine, Tarik and at times their two children Anastasia and Alexandre. Having backgrounds from Paris and Provence, the culinary experience at La Terre has been lifted to an all-time high. We caught up with Sandrine and Tarik over one of the best coffee’s we have ever had to find out more about the new owners of La Terre… What services does La Terre offer? When we took over the café the main services provided were coffee, tea and light dishes. For us it was a great start, however we have built on this experience for our customers. We now offer a full breakfast and lunch menu along with coffee, tea and cake. What brought you to Willunga? A great random series of events brought us to Willunga. We were looking for nice place to live and work with our family. After talking to a friend of ours, they told us about Willunga. We drove down here one weekend and discovered the landscapes, beaches, colours, markets, and of course the community. Finally we discovered La Terre and fell in love. In French, “La Terre” means earth, ground, soil, and land. It also means home – especially to us. Tell us about the way La Terre operates and your passions behind it.. We are French but we love Australia… it’s the country where we have chosen to live in. We feel lucky to have such a fantastic range of produce surrounding us. Gorgeous wineries, organic and seasonal products and amazing locals. So we do French cuisine with Fleurieu produce… Nothing fancy or sophisticated just simple delicious meals with fresh beautiful produce with a French touch. We are passionate about taste…but taste isn’t the only sense we want to awaken, its more than that – it’s about feelings. When we have an experience with food we feel this experience with all our senses. Our eyes, nose, taste buds... but also feelings. We try to encompass all of that through La Terre .We feel very lucky to be in Willunga and are grateful for everyone who support us.

NEW BREAKFAST & LUNCH MENU’S AVAILABLE WITH NEW WINTER HOURS Come and “taste” us et voila 44 High Street, Willunga SA 5172 T: 8556 2612 E: laterrecafe@gmail.com Facebook.com/laterrecafe

What’s in store ahead for La Terre? We would like to provide a dinner service in the near future with a focus on a special degustation menu for lunch for a Sunday lunch once a month.

Your Community News She and her coresearcher, Mark Staniforth, recently discovered a ‘practice’ piece of slate being used as a retaining wall in the garden of an early Willunga home. Railway DVD

Have you visited the new Willunga.com website as yet? If you answered no then visit www.willinga.com and get exploring! News from the Willunga National Trust “Willunga Slate Carvings: Tracing unknown treasures of the nineteenth century” with guest speaker Paddy O’Toole on Sunday 21st June, 2pm at The Hub, St Peters Tce, Willunga. Come along to hear the story of Willunga’s slate

carvers and their families and the surprising variety of carved items they created, including mantle-pieces, sculptures, relief and headstones. Paddy O’Toole, a member of Willunga National Trust, is researching this fascinating feature of Willunga slate.

The newly released Willunga Railway Line DVD is selling fast! It is a collection of historical scenes of railway operations recorded by Adrian Thomas in the 1960s during the later days of the Willunga line. It was especially produced by Andrew Thomas to commemorate the Centenary of the Willunga line in January 2015. Running time is approximately 55 minutes. It can be purchased for $30 from the Willunga Court House Museum in High Street.

Changed opening hours for Willunga Court House and Slate Museums During winter months (June, July and August) the Museums will be closed on Tuesdays. Normal opening times will be from 1-4pm on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays, plus 11am to 4pm on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Groups are welcome – please book in advance. Enquiries to 8556 2195.

Slate Heritage next to a pizza oven. An important piece of history has been found by members of the National Trust in Willunga. Willunga, famous today for the farmers market and gourmet produce, was a major slate producer in the nineteenth century. A lesser-known feature of Willunga slate quarrying was the creation of slate arts and crafts such as headstones, mantlepieces, sculptures and reliefs. A recent auction of a property formerly owned by William Hawken, who was a significant slate carver and monumental mason in Willunga during the nineteenth century, has brought to light a slate “practice piece” believed to have been carved by Hawken’s teenage son Thomas. For some years the practice piece was part of the surround of an outdoor pizza oven on the property. Both the old and the new owners of the property have generously agreed to donate the slate piece to the Willunga Branch of the National Trust where it will be displayed at the Slate Museum. The discovery is one of the first objects found as part of the new Slate Carving Identification Project.

Can you help? If you have, or know of slate carvings, mantlepieces or decorative pieces that may have

The idea came about because a lot of emphasis is placed on children’s academic ability and sporting ability and quite often artistic ability is overlooked. As a group we felt that not enough is done for children within the community to expand and involve them in art projects, so hence the art exhibition. If successful, we hope to make it an annual event and involve more schools. Continued overleaf

Letters to the Editor Hi Helen, I am writing to let you know that I made the Mother’s Day French Toast recipe from the May edition – they were absolutely delicious. Please keep the yumminess coming!

To the editor: I recently travelled to Willunga with a relative from mine who lives in McLaren Vale. I picked up a copy of the Willunga Gazette on the high street and was delighted to read about the local news and thought I would contact you regarding my time here. I visited the Farmers Markets and had a wonder though as many shops through the town as I could. As residents of Willunga, you are all very blessed to be living in such a vibrant community that has an obvious level of pride in everything they do. Can you please include me on your mailing list? Even though I don’t even live in Australia – I feel as though a piece of my heart was left in Willunga! I hope to visit again soon. Best, Susan, Derby - UK

Your Community News Recipe of the Month: Tomato & Meatball Soup! Its officially winter… and its cold! Theres no better way to warm up and keep your nutrients up than a hearty soup. This tomato and meatball soup is packed full of flavour and is sure to be a favourite for anyone looking to get warm!

Step 1 - Combine mince, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, basil, parmesan and egg in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Mix well. Roll tablespoonfuls of mixture into balls. Place on a large plate. Step 2 - Pour tomato sauce, stock and 2 cups water into a large, deep saucepan. Cover. Bring to the boil over high heat. Skim froth from surface. Add meatballs. Return to a gentle boil. Step 3 - Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes. Add risoni and cook for a further 5 minutes. Add zucchini and beans. Vegetables Cool/Temperate: It’s a quiet time in the vegie patch. The winter brassicas should be developing, with cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli ready to pick. Keep harvesting the sprouting broccoli and it will reward you with

florets into spring and beyond. Never allow it to flower or it will be spent in no time. Now is the time to plan next summer’s crop, so relax by the fire, immerse yourself in some catalogues and order your seed for sowing in July/August.

Fruit Trees Cool/Temperate: Now that it really is winter, it’s time to have a very close look at your fruit trees. Deciduous trees are now easy to examine. Remove any dead or diseased wood or branches growing

towards the inside of your trees. Remove any rough bark with a stiff brush to flake away a haven for codling moth Also - don’t forget to get raking in the garden for those lucious leaves. They are ideal soil/compost improvers!

through from a tight angle. Defence dominated for another 5 minutes until Hayes found space and delivered to Garrett who kicked truly. Hayes had 2 chances to goal in the dying minutes of the quarter but missed both to give Willunga a narrow lead at quarter time. A fifty meter penalty against Willunga allowed Thewlis to goal one minute into the second quarter. The ball rebounded from one end to the other for five minutes until Steele used his strength and experience to create another goal opportunity for Garrett who did not let him down. Steele set up another opportunity a few minutes later and Hayes ran free and kicked accurately on the run. From the next centre bounce Garrett cleared to Brown who turned onto his left and passed to Steele who goaled from twenty meters. Steele and Brown combined again 2 minutes later: Collier marked and converted from forty meters.

Willunga played their most consistent game of the year, winning every quarter, to upset match favourites, Victor Harbor.

Willunga dominated the quarter but the Kangaroos had a late opportunity to snatch back. Basham marked at forty five meters and kicked accurately but the ball fell centimeters short of the line just as the siren sounded.

Neither team could find space until Iljcesen marked in the forward pocket and slotted one

Willunga’s big challenge, after one dominant quarter was to intensity and consistency….

Demons Dominate Kangaroos

WEAVING SEA and VINES 2015 The Weaving Sea and Vines Project engaged local community members in the creation of artwork to be displayed at cafe cellar door and gallery venues on High Street, Willunga during The Sea and Vines Festival 2015 (5th to 8th June); remaining on display throughout the month of June . This project was funded by the City of Onkaparinga, through the Activate Ramsay Place Project. Your Community News Everybody expected the third placed Victor Harbor to bounce back in the premiership quarter. Steele set the tone for Willunga when he won the first bounce and set up Lahiff who gave to Collier who allowed Hayes to run free and goal one minute into the quarter. Hayes and Garrett combined a few minutes later to give to Collier who rewarded their hard work with a major. Garrett kicked his third after Lahiff and McDonald rebounded long from defence. Late in the quarter Steele spoiled a kick in, roved the ball on the ground and drove it long to the square where Standfield outmaneuvered his opponent, marked and goaled just before the three quarter time siren. The Demons had won the quarter convincingly, 7 goals 5 behind to Victor’s solitary behind. Willunga began the final quarter with a twelve goal lead and went on to extend that margin by the final siren. Two of the best goals were kicked in the last quarter, one by each side. Willunga kicked the first: McDonald dashed from defense and boomed a long kick forward where Hayes roved off hands and kicked truly. Victors goal of the day came from along kick

out which went over the top of the Willunga “ press” and Tarquin Brown ran to space and drove the ball into Victors open forward lines where Evans gathered and kicked accurately to an unattended goal mouth.

Warm Night & Winter Matiness at The Movies

License kicked another when a quick defense found the Willunga defense out of position. Willunga did not take their foot off the accelerator: Hayes found space as he had all day, and gave to McGowan who kicked his first of the day. Victor Harbor played their best football of the game but lost the goal 4 goals 3 behinds to 3 straight goals. The test for Willunga will be to maintain their pressure and consistency in their next game against League leaders Mt Compass. Victor’s challenge will be to bounce back against the confident Mudlarks at Myponga. ------Winter is a great time to feel the warmth, the love and the vibe at a unique local experience – Cinemallunga.
