COLLABORATIVE FULL SCALE INSTALLATION EXPLORING THE USE OF GLOW AS AN EXPERIENTIAL ARCHITECTURAL TOOL. THE PROJECT SOUGHT TO DEMONSTRATE THE IDEA OF GLOW BOTH AS A QUALITY OF LIGHT AND A QUALITY OF DARKNESS. GLOW VERSUS THE LACK OF GLOW. OSMOSIS AS NEEDED ASKS THE USER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CONTROL OF GLOW AND DARKNESS.

DESIGN [& INSTALL] OSMOSIS AS NEEDED
{Osmosis As Needed} constitutes a spatial fracture punctuated by two distinct and highly contrasted conditions of Glow. The extreme Glow contained within leaks through to the exterior, transmitted through the porosity of the containing wall. An initial dense condition of emitted Glow is continually altered, its contrast shifted, as directed by the user situated on the interior. The movements of the directing users are trans mitted through the dividing wall, registering as moments of lack of Glow and creating a dynamic lighting condition on the exterior.

{Osmosis as Needed} is the final resulting product of a series of efforts aimed at the control of GLOW and Darkness. The manipulation of two extreme and contrasting light conditions side by side is a common task within architectural design. This particular project sought to add to the discussion surrounding the manipulation of Light and Dark in architec ture by giving the user a significant amount of agency in the control of contrasting light conditions. The interactive installation poses questions as to the role of transient active and passive users in the manipulation of GLOW and Darkness. The temporal aspect of the project raises further questions as to the relationship between Light and Time. In what ways can GLOW be utilized to communicate the passage of time – or be used to manipulate Time – to speed it up, or slow it down? Finally, the project is concerned with the idea of materializing GLOW, of making it more tangible. The simple plastic test tube allows for the ability to hold Light in one’s hand and then to transmit that Light by literally piercing the physi cal boundary between Light and Dark.

RESEARCH [& DESIGN] THESIS: MACHINES OF MANIPULATION
THESIS AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN THROUGH RESEARCH WITH A FOCUS ON RESEARCH THROUGH MAKING. SITED AT THE FERMI NATIONAL ACCELERATOR LABORATORY IN BATAVIA, IL. THE PROJECT PROPOSES THE HYBRIDIZATION OF MATERIAL LABOR TYPES [THE LABOR OF THE MATERIAL SCIENTIST OR THE EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICIST WITH THAT OF THE ARCHITECT OR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT]. THE CREATION OF A LANDSCAPE THAT IS CONTINOUSLY DESIGNED AND MANIPULATED, CONTINUOUSLY MADE AND RE-MADE. THE PROJECT ANTICIPATES A FUTURE OF INCREDIBLE MATERIAL MANIPULATION TECHNOLOGIES.
THE LABOR PROCESSES AND PRACTICES OF MATERIAL PRODUCTION ARE UNDERVALUED WITHIN THE ARCHITECTURAL DISCIPLINE. THE DESIGN AND MAKING OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT CONSTITUTES A MANIPULATION OF MATERIAL ON A GRAND SCALE - THE MANIPULATION OF MATERIAL AT MULTIPLE SCALES. THE ARCHITECTURAL APPARATUS RELIES ON THE OPERATION OF VARIOUS MACHINES OF MANIPULATION. THIS THESIS ARGUES THAT THE DISCIPLINE OF ARCHITECTURE REMAINS LARGELY DISENGAGED FROM THE ONGOING OPERATIONS OF THESE VARIOUS MACHINES. IT CALLS FOR A DIRECT PARTICIPATION IN THE LABOR OF MATERIAL MANIPULATION WHICH WOULD THEN SERVE TO ADVANCE THE MATERIAL PRACTICE OF ARCHITECTURE ITSELF. THIS THESIS PROMOTES A NEW FROM OF ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE. IT SEEKS TO HYBRIDIZE THE MATERIAL LABOR OF ARCHITECT WITH THAT OF THE MATERIAL SCIENTIST. IT PROPOSES THE INTEGRATION OF A SCIENTIFIC METHOD THAT PUSHES THE BOUNDARIES OF MATERIAL KNOWLEDGE INTO THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROCESS. THIS THESIS IS CONCERNED WITH THE IDEA OF THE ARCHITECT AS INVENTOR. THIS THESIS MOVES IN ON SITES OF MATERIAL INNOVATION. THE APPARATUS OF ARCHITECTURE IS MOVING AWAY FROM AN OBJECT-BASED MODE OF OPERATING. IT IS INFILTRATING EXTENDED NETWORKS OF MATERIAL PRACTICES. THE SITE OF FERMILAB IS HERE TAKEN AS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF A POTENTIAL SITE OF ARCHITECTURAL INTERVENTION. THE PHYSICISTS AT THE FERMI NATIONAL ACCELERATOR LAB, LOCATED IN BATAVIA, ILLINOIS HAS FOR DECADES SOUGHT TO DISCOVER THE FUNDAMENTAL BUILDING BLOCKS OF MATTER, TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE MATERIAL UNIVERSE IS MADE AND WHY IT BEHAVES THE WAY IT DOES. THIS LABOR TAKES PLACE AT THE SCALE OF THE PARTICLE - MATTER AT ITS MOST FUNDAMENTAL LEVEL. THE TEVATRON - A CIRCULAR PARTICLE ACCELERATOR 3.9 MILES IN DIAMETER - IS THE MAIN EXPWWWERIMENT AT FERMILAB. IT IS USED TO COLLIDE PARTICLES IN ORDER TO CREATE CONDITIONS SIMILAR TO THOSE AT THE TIME OF THE BIG BANG. THIS THESIS IS ATTRACTED TO THIS IDEA OF USING A MASSIVELY SCALED INSTRUMENT TO STUDY MATTER AT THE SMALLEST SCALE POSSIBLE.
ON JANUARY 10, 2011, IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE TEVATRON WILL CEASE OPERATIONS AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER, 2011,[4] AS IT HAS BEEN MADE OBSOLETE BY THE LHC,[5] WHICH BEGAN OPERATIONS IN EARLY 2010. THIS THESIS SEEKS TO SET NEW MATERIAL AGENDAS FOR THE SITE, AND WITH THOSE NEW AGENDAS, A NEW LANDSCAPE FORM. THE CURRENT LANDSCAPE OF FERMILAB, ARTIFICIAL AND IMPORTED, WILL BE MADE FURTHER ARTIFICIAL THROUGH PERPETUAL MANIPULATION. AN INITIAL MASSIVE CONTROLLED BURN OF THE SITE WILL CLEAR THE WAY FOR THE NEW LANDSCAPE. THE TEVATRON WILL BE EXCAVATED. A NEW POLYMER-CONSTRUCTED ARCHITECTURE IS INJECTED INTO THE LANDSCAPE. THE ARCHITECTURAL TEAM TAKES UP RESIDENCE IN THE MAIN CONTROL ROOM - FROM HERE THE ARCHITECT OVERSEES THE CONTINUAL MANIPULATION OF THE LANDSCAPE - DAILY ROUNDS OF CONTROLLED BURNS, SHIFTS, EXPANSIONS AND CONTRACTIONS OF THE ARTIFICIAL, PLASTIC LANDFORMS. THE WORK OF THE ARCHITECT IS ONGOING. THE DESIGN AND MANIPULATION OF THE LANDSCAPE IS TAKEN IN SHIFTS. THE PROGRAM, A HOTEL, IS ADOPTED IN ORDER TO BUILD A CONSTANT DENSITY OF TRANSIENT USERS - THE POLYMER HILLS RESORT. THE HOTEL GUESTS ARE ATTRACTED BY THE SPATIAL EXPERIENCE OF AN EVER-CHANGING LANDSCAPE AND THE SPECTACLE OF THE CONTROLLED BURNS. THEIR PHYSICAL PRESENCE MAKES THEM INTO PASSIVE MATERIAL LABORERS AS THE REFLEXIVE TECHNOLOGY OF THE ARCHITECTURE UNMAKES AND REMAKES ITSELF ACCORDINGLY RESPONDING TO CHANGES IN HEAT, CO2 LEVELS, MOVEMENT, PRESSURE, SOUND. AN INFRASTRUCTURE IN SUPPORT OF A PERPETUAL CONSTRUCTION SITE IS LAID. OIL AND OTHER CHEMICALS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF VARIOUS POLYMERS ARE PIPED IN. A FARM IS STARTED ONSITE TO CULTIVATE WHEAT, SUGAR BEETS, AND POTATOES - USED TO PRODUCE BIOPOLYMERS.
UNBEKNOWNST TO THE ARCHITECT OR THE HOTEL GUESTS, A SUBTERRANEAN MILITARY RESEARCH LAB AND AIR DEFENSE COMPOUND IS INSTALLED ONSITE - THE GOVERNMENT EAGER TO FIND A WAY TO USE THE TECHNOLOGY OF THIS NEW EVERSHIFTING POLYMER LANDSCAPE FOR “DEFENSE” PURPOSES. A STOCK OF PATRIOT SURFACE TO AIR MISSILES STAND READY TO PROTECT THE SITE FROM NUCLEAR ATTACK. A LARGER INVOLVEMENT IN TERRITORIES OF MATERIAL TECHNOLOGY OBLIGATES PARTICIPATION IN A GLOBAL DISCUSSION OF MATERIAL ETHICS. THE IMPLICATIONS OF UNCHECKED MATERIAL MANIPULATION ARE ENTERING INTO THE DISCOURSE OF ARCHITECTURE. THE CONSTRUCT CONSTITUTES MY OWN ATTEMPTS AT RESEARCH THROUGH MAKING. IT HAS PROVIDED ME A PLATFORM ON WHICH TO LAY OUT AND ORGANIZE THE VARIOUS RELATIONAL ASPECTS OF THE THESIS. THE CONSTRUCT WAS USED TO SITUATE THE THESIS WITHIN THE LARGER CONTEXT OF MATERIAL MANIPULATION AT MULTIPLE SCALES AND ACROSS MULTIPLE VALENCES.
