I am pleased to announce the second edition of Eyes on Main Street, Wilson Outdoor Photo Festival. On April 9, 2016, Nash Street, the main street of Wilson, will be transformed into a vibrant gallery of large-scale photographs. For 100 days, 100 photographs will be displayed on storefront windows, spanning six city blocks. Taking visitors across the railroad tracks, the exhibition will link east and west Wilson into one shared community. We are most proud of this achievement. Focusing on the theme of “Main Street, a Crossroad of Cultures” the exhibition, curated by myself and co-curated by Catherine Coulter Lloyd and Régina Monfort, features the work of 100 photographers from 29 countries with an equal number of men and women. The photographs on display show us 48 different countries The inaugural 2015 exhibit garnered international publicity and earned the 2015 Gertrude S. Carraway Award of Merit from Preservation North Carolina. The Eyes on Main Street festival launches on the corner of Nash & Douglas Streets on April 9th with an outdoor party featuring live music and runs until July 10, 2016. Over the 100 days, a number of events will celebrate Wilson’s commitment to the arts, including a partnership with Columbia College in Chicago. Sponsored by Columbia College Alumni Association, Peter Fitzpatrick, Chair of the Photography Department, School of Fine and Performing Arts of Columbia College will supervise senior photography students who will travel from Chicago to Wilson to conduct workshops for more than 100 Wilson youth who are part of Wilson’s Save A Youth program, St. John Community Development Corporation with Rev. Michael Bell, Executive Director and Wilson City Councilman. Investing in our Youth is the best way to invest in the future of our Historic Downtown. Nina Berman is a documentary photographer, author and educator, whose photographs and videos have been exhibited at more than 100 international venues. She has received awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Open Society Foundation, World Press Photo and Hasselbald among others. Her photographic series, Marine Wedding, was exhibited at the Whitney Biennial 2010 and is considered an iconic work on the Iraq war. Berman is an associate professor at Columbia University and is a member of the Amsterdam-based NOOR photo collective. She lives in her hometown of New York City.

Photograph taken in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 2015 Umberto Verdoliva is an Italian photographer based in Treviso. After taking an interest in photography in 2006, he was invited to join the collective, VIVO, in 2010. Three years later he founded SPONTANEA, a group consisting of exclusively Italian photographers. The winner of numerous national and international prizes, Verdoliva is also a contributor to multiple specialist publications. Some of his most important acknowledgments include: the Sony World Photography Awards (2009), finalist for the CIFA award (2013), Audience Award at the Miami Street Photography Festival (2014) and third place at the Moscow International Fotography Awards (2015).

JOHN VINK Photograph taken in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 1991 John Vink, born in Belgium, studied photography at a fine arts school in 1968 and began working as a freelance journalist three years later. He joined Agence Vu in 1986 and won the Eugene Smith Award for his work Water in the Sahel, a photo-essay on the management of water South of the Sahara. Vink became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1997. He is based in Cambodia since 2000 and published Avoir 20 Ans à Phnom Penh that year.
DANIEL WESSELL Photograph taken in Pine Ridge, SD, 2012 Daniel Wessell’s photography is a “multi-facetted melting pot of empowerment and selfdiscovery.” Since 2011, he has photographed the Oglala Sioux of South Dakota and life as it exists on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Over these years his photography has evolved from a general look at Lakota society to the study and teaching of photography and B&W darkroom photographic processes to young people from 7 to 24-years-old.

Photograph taken in San Tong, China, 2014 Gao Yuan explores the multi-layered arts of a society in her still photography and short films. In her two recent series, “Twelve Moons” and “Graffiti,” she blends the roots of western and eastern culture and shows how cultural identity is shaped by socio-political environments. Her work has been displayed in Europe, Taiwan, China and the United States. Yuan studied fine art in Taiwan and attended the New York Film Academy. Her work was selected for Grand Prize at Kaunas Biennial (2012).
