Anthony Atkinson Age 32

Family I am married to Laura Barnes Atkinson and we have two handsome little boys, Trey and Hayden. Current company, position, and job responsibilities I currently work for the Harlem Globetrotters. My role in the company is that of a showman. What do you like best about what you do? What I like best about my job is the ability to make people smile for two hours out of their day. They can just forget about all their troubles and laugh and enjoy life! What other organizations are you a part of? I have an AAU basketball program. We travel and play basketball trying to get kids scholarships and keeping young men off the streets. What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? To make a difference in our community I think I am being a good example for our kids and grownups. Showing them that coming from Wilson you can be something special, live your dreams and not be a statistic. I'm an African American man at the age of 32 who has my head on straight, and I'm not killing, doing drugs, or representing my community in a bad way! What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? What I like best about Wilson is the fact that it made me! I'm from Wilson and even though I had a lot of naysayers and people trying to hold me back, I made it. It's my home. I will never forget Wilson because Wilson is me, and I am Wilson! Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? My dad is the most inspirational person in my life. He is my pastor, my friend, my father and has always been there for me. He had a vision for me and helped me to see it through. He is just a great man of God and true definition of a father! What is your favorite book? The Bible What is your favorite movie? Coming to America. If there were one quote/saying that summed up your life, what would it be? The one quote that sums up my life would be, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.� What is your biggest hope for the future of Wilson? My biggest hope for Wilson is that one day we will be a city of love, a city of peace, and prosperity! You hear and see so many things that negative, that the positive things are covered up. We may be small, but Wilson is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. It's up to us, the people of Wilson, to change that. Wilson is what we make it!

Matthew Bailey Age 32 Family My wife, Jessica, and I have been married for almost 10 years. Jessica works at the Wilson County Schools Central Office. We have two children; our son Paxton is 7 and in second grade, and our daughter Ella is 5 and in kindergarten. Both attend New Hope Elementary. Current company, position, and job responsibilities I have worked for BB&T for ten years, and am Vice President and Small Business Specialist. I am a relationship manager for business clients in Wilson and surrounding counties in eastern NC. I help provide loan, deposit, and other banking solutions to our clients help them achieve economic success and financial security. What do you like best about what you do? I enjoy meeting new people and growing my relationships with my clients. The clients are my #1 priority, and I strive to meet their needs. There is nothing more gratifying than helping a client meet their financial goals by identifying solutions that make them more efficient and profitable. What other organizations are you a part of? United Way of Wilson County-Past President/board member. Vice President for the Wilson ARC. Board Member for the Wilson Crisis Center and Wilson County Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (Meals on Wheels). Member of the Rotary Club of Greater Wilson. What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? Being involved and engaged within the community. I’m fortunate to work for an organization that has the same beliefs - in making our community a better place to be. Wilson is a great place to live, to work and to raise a family, and by serving on several boards and building relationships with the business community, I feel and hope I am contributing in a positive way. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? The people. Growing up in Wilson County, I don’t think I realized how tight-knit our community is and how we really support one another. By living in Wilson and knowing the people, I feel it makes my work so much more fulfilling. I love that Jessica and I are raising our children in a place we grew up ourselves and in the same school system we were educated in. Our families are here, and we have deep roots in Wilson. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? My parents have been the most inspirational to me. I’m appreciative of the way they instilled a great work ethic into my values. They taught me how hard work builds character. They continue to inspire me to be a better myself and be a good father. What is your favorite book? Catcher in the Rye

What is your favorite movie? Tombstone

If there were one quote/saying that summed up your life, what would it be? “The most certain way to succeed is to just try one more time” – Thomas Edison Those that know me know that I do not give up on anything and I very competitive. If you tell me I can’t do something, I will try harder to make sure I can. I feel like that quote applies so much in every aspect of my life, both personally and professionally. What is your biggest hope for the future of Wilson? My biggest hope is just to see Wilson continue to grow. Wilson has grown and changed so much over the years in a positive way. We as a community are doing a phenomenal job at making Wilson an even better place to live, work and play.

Christopher Ballance

Family My family is from Wayne County, my closest friends who are like my siblings are spread all across the East Coast, and while I am not married, I am dating a wonderful Wilsonian by the name of Maggie Slaughter who was born and raised here in Wilson. Current company, position, and job responsibilities I am the Performing Arts Director for the Arts Council of Wilson and I am the Artistic Director of ACT! for Youth, the children’s theatre in Wilson. I am responsible for directing and selecting, with a group of parents and community members, all the shows that ACT! for Youth performs. As well as being the director, I am a teaching artist in Wilson, and I teach classes in acting, improvisation, and directing.

What do you like best about what you do? The fact that I am able to come into work every day and work on shows. Theatre has provided such a wonderful presence in my life and to get to provide that to the youth of Wilson is truly special. What other organizations are you a part of? I am a board member at large with the Playhouse of Wilson, the community theatre in Wilson. I also work closely with Downtown Development, and I am member of the Whirligig Planning Committee. What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? I would say that being able to provide theatre to kids who do not have that opportunity is the biggest thing that I have the privilege of providing this community. The Arts Council of Wilson, more specifically the ACT! for Youth program, provides Wilson youth with its largest performing arts venue in the Edna Boykin Cultural Center to perform in and gives theatre education to an area that would not have that opportunity otherwise. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? Having the keys to a theater. Also, I get to create theatrical works of art, which has been a long-time dream of mine. Working in the Edna Boykin Cultural Center has made that dream a reality. Hearing the jingle of my keys everyday is a nice, little reminder of the beauty that this community possesses. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? Almost too many people to answer this question with any justice. Directors like Kenny Leon, Thomas Kail and Mike Nichols consistently inspire me to do work. My family and friends are also wonderful sources of inspiration. The directors are an obvious choice because each one of them are or have created spectacular works of art and are considered among the greats in the art of directing. I want to be talked about the way they are one day. My family and friends are just always there to make sure I keep my head on my shoulders and they guide me. Everyone should be inspired by those who help us navigate this world. What is your favorite book? I never like to answer this question with an actual book since most books I read are scholarly works on theatre, I always like to give out what my favorite play is instead. My favorite play is a toss-up between Buried Child by Sam Shepard and Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller. What is your favorite movie? The Breakfast Club, easily. If there were one quote/saying that summed up your life, what would it be? “I don't know who my grandfather was; I am much more concerned with what his grandson will be.” Abraham Lincoln. What is your biggest hope for the future of Wilson? I hope that it will become the epicenter of theatrical art in eastern North Carolina, there is a lot of talent here, and it deserves to be seen. I hope to get theatre taught in every public, private, and charter school in all of Wilson because I believe that theatre should not only be a part of every child’s educational experience, but a crucial and highly valued part.

Bert Beard

Family Crystal (spouse of 10 years), 3 daughters-Kylee (6), Sydney (3) and Emory (1.5) Current company, position, and job responsibilities Duke LifePoint Wilson Medical Center, Chief Operating Officer (COO), day-to-day operations of the hospital and special projects. What do you like best about what you do? The work is different every day and the interactions with different people keeps the work interesting, but what I enjoy most is the sense that we are contributing to the greater good of the community in helping those in time of need. What other organizations are you a part of? Wilson Education Partnership-Board, Wide Awake Wilson Kiwanis-Vice President, Rotary Club of Greater Wilson-Member, Vinson Bynum Elementary School-Tutor, Wilson Heart Walk-Hospital Co-Chair What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? Engagement in helping others is important. Volunteering is essential and most effective when you are passionate about the cause. While I am engaged in several efforts, I like to focus on those philanthropies that support child health and development. The majority of organizations noted above have a particular focus on children in our community. I have the added benefit that what I do for a living involves helping individuals that may need it most. It’s foundational to what the hospital does and our mission- Together making our community healthier. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? There is a true sense of a family community in Wilson that has been evident for me from the beginning, both personally and professionally. The community has embraced my family more so than any other I have relocated to in my career, and that means a lot to us. One thing that separates Wilson Medical Center from most other hospitals I’ve come across is that it really is neighbors taking care of neighbors. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? It’s a toss-up. My parents are hardworking and emphasized the importance of education while preserving family as a priority. My mom is a lifelong learner and an entrepreneur who started a successful yearbook photography business at 45, exposing me early to the principles of ownership. My dad was in hospital administration for 30 years, so professionally his career and experience have had an apparent impact on my life and career choice. Ultimately though, my wife is my biggest inspiration. At 27, she went back to law school, graduated in 2.5 years, passed two bars over the following year and had our two youngest daughters in that total timespan. Her focus, strength and perseverance amaze me. What is your favorite book? I enjoy Clive Cussler books that feature Dirk Pitt.

What is your favorite movie? Tombstone

If there were one quote/saying that summed up your life, what would it be? “I’m your Huckleberry.” What is your biggest hope for the future of Wilson? My hope is that Wilson continues to evolve and grow as a community. In healthcare, that means the successful completion of our facility renovations over the next four years to better serve the health care needs of the region. More broadly, I hope the community is able to build on the rich culture of Wilson to grow in step with and as a complement of Raleigh.

What do you like best about what you do? I enjoy working in the world of sports, something that has been a tremendous part of my life growing up. Greater Rotary Club of Wilson, Wilson Chamber of Commerce, East Carolina Club Sports Alumni What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? I work each day to make sure I provide the best form of entertainment to the city of Wilson and its sports fans. I want to bring everyone out to Fleming Stadium to show them a great time and stray them away from their hectic schedule and work day. A majority of our promotional and game nights are community related and are focused on helping out the less fortunate and the community of Wilson. (Home Run for Hunger Food Drive, Pink Night for Breast Cancer, Versus childhood cancer night, Super Splash Days for local Childhood and Daycare center) Helping out the community is my job. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? The Wilson Community Connection and the fans are the best part of Wilson. Everyone does so much to help the city of Wilson and the fans show so much support for our organization. Also, the delicious food! Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? My father Greg - Unfortunately, he does not enjoy his job, but he does it to support my family financially. He is the one that stressed to me that I must follow a path that would land me a job that I love and want, not the one I need. What is your favorite book? Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success

My hope is that the city of Wilson will stay connected and remain financially stable. I want the history and community love to prosper for many years.

I coordinate our District Court (misdemeanor criminal) cases, handle felony criminal matters, personal injury actions, small business formation, business litigation, other civil litigation, and legal research and writing. What do you like best about what you do? Being in a position to help people who are unable to help themselves. What other organizations are you a part of? MCEC (Mediation Center of Eastern Carolina) Advisory Council, MCEC Executive Board, Knights of Columbus, Phi Alpha Delta, and NCAJ (North Carolina Advocates for Justice), Methodist University Legal Studies Advisory Board. What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? I am directly involved in fundraising efforts for Wilson office of the MCEC. I also organize the “Seven” fundraiser for the Imagination Station and the NCAJ Food Drive for Wilson County. Professionally, I am on the court appointed list and provide legal representation for people who cannot afford to privately retain counsel. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? The people. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? I derive most of my inspiration from my children. They are the reason why I work so diligently for the community and my clients. I hope that the citizens of Wilson will begin to take better care of one another, whether it be parent to child, neighbor to neighbor, or by supporting local businesses. That is the only way Wilson can continue to prosper and grow.

Staying involved in different community organizations. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? I love the small community feel. Wilson is a wonderful place to raise a family without all the chaos of a big city. It allows family to be priority. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? My parents, Jeff and Pat Chesson. They have always pushed me to be the best person I can be for myself and others. They instilled in me the key to being a successful person in whatever I may do. Current company, position, and job responsibilities Barton College, Assistant Director for Campus Visits. Responsible for scheduling and coordinating 2,500+ visitors each year through open houses, individual, overnight, and group visits in the Admissions Office. Advise the Student Ambassador program, including hiring and training of over 45 student leaders. Work closely with faculty and staff across campus to coordinate all Admissions events. Also oversee content for campus visit websites and virtual and traditional marketing for prospective students and families. What do you like best about what you do? Working with my Student Ambassadors. I love to watch a student grow and mature from a senior in high school to a senior in college. There is so much emotional, intellectual, and professional growth that happens in four years. I love knowing I’m a part of their maturity process. I was very fortunate to be surrounded by great advisors during my college experience, and they helped shape me into the person I am today. I am honored to be able to be that person for the next generation. What other organizations are you a part of? What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? Volunteering! By being willing to give my time and energy to the community, I’ve been honored to join organizations that are making a difference here. Each organization has a different purpose for how to make Wilson better each day. And from my involvement, I find that I am to connect people they might not have met otherwise. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? The network of people and friends that I’ve created. I have lived in a number of states, and like most towns I’ve lived in, you have to put yourself out there and join organizations to meet new people. It takes time, but I’ve found that the small size of Wilson really lends itself to creating meaningful friendships. I also appreciate the encouragement and support of my fellow colleagues at Barton College. I know that every day we each strive to make a difference in our students’ lives. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? I was at a conference and the presenter said something that has always stuck with me, “You’ll learn more in the first one-third of your career than you’ll ever learn in the last two-thirds of your career.” For me, the person who taught me for the first-third of my career is Theresa Mathis (she is now the Human Relations Specialist at the City of Wilson). I moved to Wilson when she hired me at Barton College 10 years ago. I was young and enthusiastic to learn, and she taught me so much! So many things I still do today are things I learned from her – my organization style, processes that I follow – they all come from watching a true professional model it for me. I love seeing how a person’s legacy can be passed on… I see many of my students now organize themselves “like Angela.” What is your favorite book? In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan

I have seen so much growth since I moved here, and I know our future is bright. I am truly looking forward to Wilson’s future where old ideas give way to fresh new innovative plans that will propel us into the 21st century.

Family Single and no kids. Current company, position, and job responsibilities I work for BB&T in E-mail Support. I have been with BB&T for 7 years. I also work with online banking accounts, and BB&T Chat. I am also Founder/CEO of non-profit Positive Women Positive Results, Inc. What do you like best about what you do? Mentoring and helping teenage girls in the community. What other organizations are you a part of? Parks and Recreation Committee, Bike and Pedestrian Committee, Impact Initiative Leadership Program with Wilson Chamber of Commerce. What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? Annual Teen Empowerment is an event I have every year where business owners, schools and organizations come together to speak and network with teenage girls in the community. I also do a talent show every year called Teens Got Talent which is a fundraiser event, and also gives teenagers in the community a chance to show case their talent. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? I was born and raised in Wilson, and it has grown so much. So much great things are happing in this town, and I want to make sure I am doing my part to make Wilson the best. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? My father, Marvin Coley. I am really a daddy’s girl. He has always been there for me, and I can talk to him about anything. He helps out with all my events, and supports me 100%. What is your favorite book? Halloween (I am a huge horror fan) If there were one quote/saying that summed up your life, what would it be? “Don’t watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going” Sam Levenson What is your biggest hope for the future of Wilson? To make our youth aware of how much awesome opportunities are right here in Wilson, and when they leave to further their education they want to come back to Wilson because of the knowledge and wonderful opportunities Wilson has to offer.

Tramond Duckworth Age 33 Family I am married to my wife and best friend, Fleurztaël. We have been married for 10 years and have 2 beautiful boys, Tyenn and Titus.​ Current company, position, and job responsibilities I work for Victory Fitness as the Fitness Director. As the Director, I oversee our Fitness Services (Personal Training, Small Group, and Large Group Sessions) and make sure that the members have programs that will support them in reaching their health goals.​ I manage our events calendar and am responsible for creating marketing material for digital advertising and social media extensions. I also am a Personal Trainer and work with clients with a variety of health and fitness goals. What do you like best about what you do? I have the great privilege of helping people get healthier and feel better about their body. It is a great feeling to show someone their before and after picture and have them jump and cry in excitement. It is an honor to join them on their fitness journey and it is awesome to see people happier with the way they look, the way they feel, and the ability to reduce or discontinue medications because they are making better lifestyle choices. What other organizations are you a part of? I am an active member of the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. I hold two certifications from them in Personal Training and Group Fitness and I am an Education Specialist for them as well.

What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? My passion is to see healthier families, from adults to children. As such, although I have recently moved to Wilson, I have volunteered at several events where I can empower the community with creative ideas to help them do simple things to get moving and have improved wellness. I have partnered with 4-H Youth & Development Team in their elementary outreach events teaching kids about healthier choices, I coach at an Upward Basketball League here in Wilson, I participated in a Health Fair held by Merck and am currently working with the Wilson County Fit to Farm Program assisting our local farm families improve their fitness levels.

What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? Wilson gives you a small-town welcome and feel, but also has many features of a large metropolitan city. My family has enjoyed the theatre, we are regular visitors of the library, and we love shopping at local businesses. We can also do a “big box” store in town or take a short drive to Raleigh if we want to, however, most of our time and activities are done right here in town. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? Fleurztaël Duckworth has been an inspirational figure in my life for over 12 years. She is a well-educated woman with a Master’s Degree, extensive business background, and experience in school administration, but has gladly made the decision to use these skill sets in her household to work as a Homemaker. This teaches me that accomplishments are not found in what we can achieve, but what we can invest in others, your family being first and foremost. She makes me want to be a better husband and father, the most important jobs that I have. What is your favorite book? It is difficult to pick one favorite book, I like Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, Gary Chapman’s 5 Love Languages, and Lee Strobel’s The Case for Christ. Too tough to pick one. What is your favorite movie? I have to go with The Matrix as a set (yes, even the 3rd). There is so much that goes on in The Matrix, there’s religion, philosophy, hand-to-hand combat, guns galore, and crazy effects, what else can you ask for?! Family I have one son named Javaris who is 15. My grandmother Shirlene Hall who raised me. And my mother who was my best friend passed in 2012, her name was Valerie Hall and my father passed in 2003, his name was Antonio Barnes. Current company, position, and job responsibilities I am the owner of Lovely Lady Shoetique, located on Tarboro Street in downtown Wilson, which is a woman's shoe and clothing boutique. I am also the Founder of the Hall Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization which provides community support for the people of Wilson. What do you like best about what you do? I just love to help people. In my store I love working with women to help them with style and fashion to achieve the perfect look. How you look can be such a self-esteem booster. But what I really love is working with my nonprofit. It's times when we give out new or used prom dress or when we donate school supplies to thousands of Wilson County kids that matter the most to me. It really touches my heart. What other organizations are you a part of? Currently my schedule doesn't allow me to do much outside of being a parent, a boutique and a nonprofit, but I did join the NAACP last year. That's one that I am proud of. What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? Each year the Hall Foundation hosts numerous events. In March, we will be donating new and used prom dresses to young ladies in need. This is our third year having the Cinderella Project. This will be held at Lovely Lady Shoetique. My biggest event, which many residents know me for, is the Back 2 School Summit. For the last five years we have collected school supplies and donated them to thousands of Wilson County students. In 2012, I was awarded a proclamation to the city by Mayor Bruce Rose. That's an accomplishment that will stick with me forever. To have my own day in honor of the Hall Foundation was pretty amazing. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? I live in Raleigh but everything I do is in Wilson. My business is in Wilson as well as my nonprofit. I choose to keep everything here because this is home. Wilson is a city that lacks some of the resources that bigger cities have, so if I can provide the people of Wilson with what they need then I'm willing to do just that. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? The most inspirational to me would be several people. One is my grandmother. I promised her when I was a little girl that I would buy her a house. I'm still striving for that goal but just to see her proud of me makes me happy. Second would be my mom. Although she's passed away, I know she's smiling down from heaven proud of the woman I have become. And last would be my son. He has inspired me to be the best mother and person I can be and to never let life's circumstances prevent me from doing so. What is your favorite book? My favorite books are The Secret series, which I've read numerous times. I also love The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn. And my next book will be The Alchemist. What is your favorite movie? My favorite movie is too funny for me to tell you all. I would be embarrassed. If there were one quote/saying that summed up your life, what would it be? I've admired the quote from Maya Angelou. It says, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." What is your biggest hope for the future of Wilson? My biggest hope is that the people of Wilson will begin to come together for the betterment of one another. We have to put race, religion, social status, income, etc. behind us and let's come together as one Union. Wilson would be so much better if we could all overcome adversity together. We all go through some type of hardship. Wouldn't it be easier if we could overcome it together by helping one another. That's when you become a true champion.

What do you like best about what you do? I love portraying a positive image of the businesses I work for to the community. I enjoy conveying that there are real people, families, and a history behind the doors of these businesses. Board of Directors and volunteer at The Arts Council of Wilson and The CHEW. Member of Peace Church. Volunteer for The Wilson Pregnancy Center. Also involved with Pink Ladies through the hospital. What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? Volunteer my time fundraising and handling marketing and social media for The CHEW and the Arts Council of Wilson. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? When I need help with something personally or professionally I almost always reach out to someone I have known half my life or longer. I love living and working in a town where I grew up. It sets you up for success. It’s easy to solve a problem or make something happen in Wilson. Our community genuinely cares about each other and likes to see others succeed. I love seeing childhood friends at the grocery store, former Sunday School teachers when I go out to eat, and elementary or high school teachers when I am running an errand. Wilson is also a good place to raise a family with incredible schools and athletic programs for our children. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? Louise McKinnon because she cares so much about the children in Wilson. And also the love she has for her husband, family and church. Robin Williams because of her contaigous passion for our community. Jennifer Lantz because of the practical ways she seeks to grow the economic development of Wilson, and teach others in the process. And my mentor from a very young age, Christy Proctor, because of her genuine love for our community and relentless work ethic. What is your favorite book? Reconcile and deposit daily cash receipts. Maintain calendar for the center. What do you like best about what you do? I love interacting and getting to know members of the community. I love talking, sharing, and providing great services to my fellow Wilsonians, sharing a kind and uplifting word to the seniors we serve and simply being a beacon a light to everyone I encounter. What other organizations are you a part of? I am the CEO/Founder of WoManUp Empowering Women and Girls. What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? Through WoManUp, we are providing an avenue for women of all ages to come together to uplift, inspire, motivate and provide community services and outreach for those in need. We mentor the youth, motivate each other to be the best we can be, and spread and share our love with the community providing free educational and motivating events to help show the women of Wilson that there are wonderful things to do and wonderful things are happening right here in our community. As an individual, I try to live by the best example possible being a person that not only voices a few slogans, but walks what I speak. I am not perfect but I’m striving to grow and be the best person I can be and in the process help others who are striving for the same outlook in life as I am. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? Wilson is my home. I was born and raised here. I enjoy being a part of my home town and helping to take it to another level and increase the good in what lies right under our nose. Many people say that there is nothing to do here in Wilson and nothing good about Wilson but I am here to change that stigma and to let everyone know of the good right here in our community. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? God. He assures me every day that you can do anything you want to do if you put your heart and mind into it. What is your favorite book? It takes a little patience and a lot of faith. But it’s always worth the wait.” What is your biggest hope for the future of Wilson? I want to begin a mentoring service so that I can continue to reach young women on many levels providing caring and compassionate services to meet their physical, spiritual, and psychological and any other needs they may have. I want to see Wilson overcome negative stereotypes and gain back the image that this is OUR Wilson and that it is great place to live, strive, prosper and raise a loving family.

Age 38 Family My wife, Natalie Mercer. (My immediate family outside of my home, my mother, Bess Mercer, and my brother, Robbie Mercer) Current company, position, and job responsibilities I am the owner and master instructor of Dong's Martial Arts School in Wilson. As the owner of the school I am in charge of accounting, marketing, billing, accounts management, statistics and all the other typical operations of a small business. As the master instructor, I am in charge of lesson planning and teaching our curriculum to my students. I teach approximately 30 classes a week Monday through Saturday. What do you like best about what you do? I personally have a passion for traditional martial arts training, and through that I was motivated to become a professional instructor. I greatly enjoy the physical part of the training. It is very rewarding to see students become empowered through learning practical self defense skills but it is even more satisfying to share the mental and philisophicalaspects of traditional training. Mentally, students develop a strong sense of respect and self-discipline which are the foundation for success in martial arts and daily life. Students gain self confidence, patience, diligence and a positive attitude to name a few of the benefits that I see our students developing in classes on a daily basis. It is very humbling and highly rewarding for me personally to be a part of this. What other organizations are you a part of? Our school is a part of the Advanced World Martial Arts System under 9th degree black belt Grand Master Sueng Dong. I have been a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church all my life. I am a student of the Pathfinder School of Ohio (Wilderness Self-Reliance) Graduate of Basic and Pioneer training. What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? Our school has always been active in our community to try and help others. I believe that the stronger we become physically, the softer our hearts should be. This way we can use our strength for good around us. Annually our schools host a tournament for charity to raise money for Children's Hospital. Over the years, our schools have donated over $420,000.00 to this organization to help provide medical treatment to children in need. We also hold an annual canned food drive for the Wilson Community Soup Kitchen. Our school has collected and donated over 10,000 pounds of non-perishable food to the soup kitchen. We have participated in Wilson's Annual Nutcracker for the past 6 years which is an all volunteer production and all proceeds go to benefit Wilson Pregnancy Center. I personally have been cast in the role of The Nutcracker since the shows inception. I regularly volunteer to lead self defense and awareness seminars for local organizations from public and home school groups, local businesses, churches, boys and girl scouts groups etc. I believe it is important to share this knowledge with others in our community because it could very well be life saving one day.

Cheers to You 20 Under 40 Nominees

What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? Wilson is my hometown. I so thankful that I have been able to live out my dream of teaching martial arts in the community that I grew up. Being from Wilson, people know me and I have been able to build a reputation here over the years. I like that I recognize people wherever I go and that so many recognize me because of my years of teaching and being active in this community. I love that we are a small town and rich with great folks! Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? There are several people that have greatly impacted my life and helped me to become the person I am today but if I was to choose one, it has to be my mom. My father passed away when I was 7 years old so my mom raised my brother and I by herself. Not only did she support our family as a single parent with her craft business, but she put herself through nursing school and became a registered nurse. She has always been there for and provided for me and has taught me the most important life lessons, especially to care about others and to always try to do what is right. What is your favorite book? My favorite book is absolutely The Bible. If I could only have one that would be "the one" hands down. Aside from The Bible, I love reading books about the outdoors and anything that contains knowledge of how to be a better woodsman or how to be more self-reliant off of the landscape. That is my other passion outside of the martial arts. What is your favorite movie? I don't spend a lot of time watching movies, but there are several that I really like. To choose a favorite, I would say The Lord of the Rings trilogy would have to be it. Of course Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies would be right up there as all time favorites. If there were one quote/saying that summed up your life, what would it be? I honestly don't know of a quote that sums up my life, but I have always thought of this one as a favorite quote; “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.” As a professional instructor, I can truly relate to this quote. What is your biggest hope for the future of Wilson? My biggest hope for Wilson is that we continue to become a more unified community where people can live and raise their families in peace in a safe and healthy environment. As we continue to grow, I hope we can hold on to our our small town roots and charm.

I love going to work every day knowing that I am making a difference in the lives of our future. My students truly keep me going and have shown me through the years unconditional love and compassion. What other organizations are you a part of? Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Department. I am a firefighter as well as the secretary. I was also voted 2015 Firefighter of the Year. What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? I have always received satisfaction from knowing I made a difference is someone’s life. As a teacher, I get to see my students grow so much through the year. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? Working in Wilson has given me a great feeling of creativity and opportunity. I have found opportunity to be who I was designed to be, and manifest close knit relationships within multiple communities inside Wilson. Wilson was established 167 years ago, on January 29, 1849. We are a young city compared to other “big” cities in our state, but with youth and leadership we find perspective of how we can build forward our “not yet big” home. Living in Wilson is convenient, because of the access to the highways and roads. I love to travel to different cities, states and beaches with Highways 264, 301, 117, 97, 58, 42, 64, 91 and Interstates 95 & 795. With low cost in living and easy access to food, entertainment, and sightseeing being all around us, Wilson, being In The Middle of Everything is a great place to live. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? My Mother, Bettie J. Swinson Patterson. As an adult, I recently became friends with my mom after the passing of my dad. Learning her as a person and not only as my mother has been eyeopening. My mother was an orphan, and it is often thought that orphans are unloved, but with my mother that is incorrect. She has so much love inside of her that when she is around complete strangers, little babies, teens, and adults tend to gravitate or just walk up to her and just seem as if they have known each other for a lifetime. I have witnessed this almost unexplainable experience in several states, and she is loved everywhere she is. I choose to love everyone the way she loves because it comes back around when you least expect it. What is your favorite book? The book of Proverbs, inside of The Holy Bible. What is your favorite movie? I am a Personal Trust Specialist, with the responsibility to conduct the administration of investment, retirement, trust and estate accounts. What do you like best about what you do? My job at BB&T gives me the opportunity to facilitate charitable and scholarship trust distributions. I can see firsthand the positive impact those trusts have for various non-profits and students in our region. What other organizations are you a part of? I am a member of the First United Methodist Church Staff-Parish Relations Committee, and have been involved with programs through BB&T Lighthouse, BB&T United Way Champions, BB&T Women’s Information Network, Wilson Chamber of Commerce Young Leaders and the Wilson Economic Development Council Young Leadership Program. Professionally, I am a member of the Institute of Certified Bankers. What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? Through BB&T’s Lighthouse program, our team has been able to serve our community annually, through Backpack Buddies, The Wesley Shelter, Wilson County Office of Senior Citizens Affairs and several public schools. Helping our insureds. People rarely enjoy dealing with insurance so I feel like I've accomplished something when a client leaves my office with a smile. I also appreciate having the opportunity to work with my family everyday. (My father owns our agency, and my brother works with us.) What other organizations are you a part of? Rotary Club of Greater Wilson (current president), Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club Advisory Board, First United Methodist Church, Society of CIC (Certified Insurance Counselors), UNC General Alumni Association What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? I do my best to stay active (though I'm most comfortable being at home with my family). I have served on at least two civic boards a year for the past several years. When I'm out, I always make a point to say "hi" or extend a wave in passing. I'm a Southern boy who has been raised to believe that familiarity and friendship make any town a better place. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? I love the small town feel. Being able to walk into certain places at certain times and knowing I will see familiar faces is something I don't take for granted. The location is also great. We're close to the coast and the Triangle, but lack the congestion and high cost of living associated with those areas. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? My parents. They have selflessly and unconditionally supported me throughout my life, while showing great generosity towards others almost as frequently. What is your favorite book? Chief executive of Wilson’s largest business and professional network. What do you like best about what you do? I get to work with amazing people every day. Members of the Chamber are as committed to making this community a great place to live and do business as they are to making their own organizations successful. I’ve been blessed with an incredibly talented staff who are dedicated to serving those members. Combine all that with exemplary board leadership, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work with. What other organizations are you a part of? Wilson County Partnership for Children, Wilson 20/20 Community Vision, Wilson Downtown Development, Wilson Economic Development Council, Wilson Education Partnership What are you doing to help make a difference in our community? I’m most proud to have collaborated with Paula Benson (Wilson 2020) and Jennifer Lantz (Wilson Economic Development Council) in the creation of The Impact Initiative. This immersive leadership development program is going to pay dividends in Wilson for years to come, and will set us apart from communities that don’t have a coherent strategy for grooming a next generation of leaders. What do you like best about working/living in Wilson? We have a huge number of resources relative to our population, but it’s difficult to top the convenience of our geography. Virtually anything you could ever want to see or do is a reasonable distance away. Who has been the most inspirational figure to you? Why? There are lots of people I admire, or whose behavior I’d like to emulate, but I’m not sure I was ever properly inspired or motivated until I had children. All I want is for my family to be happy and healthy. My work at the Chamber provides one very rewarding means to that end. I’m grateful for that opportunity. What is your favorite book? A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway What is your favorite movie? The Godfather If there were one quote/saying that summed up your life, what would it be? “Treat everyone with politeness – even those who are rude to you. For remember that you show courtesy to others not because they are gentlemen, but because you are one” - Charles Dickens What is your biggest hope for the future of Wilson? I hope we don’t sacrifice what is right for what is easy. Equal parts patience and courage will serve us well.
