Raadiyah Emam
Head of Investor Relations and Administration for Ankh Resources
An interview with Head of Investor Relations and Administration for Ankh Resources – hailing all the way from South Africa
As we celebrate Women’s Month in South Africa, we are reminded about the history of selflessness, dedication and determination of women who risked it all to make their presence known.
Today we are privileged and honored to have a woman with such a caliber and qualities among us. Her beautiful smile fills the room with joy, sense of peace and happiness. Those around her can tell - there is no dull moment in her presents.
Up and close with Raadiyah Emam.
What is the current state of the investment climate in Egypt’s mining sector?
As we have all witnessed, the mining industry in Egypt is currently experiencing a remarkable phase of growth and progress, owing to the visionary leadership of President Abdel Fatah Al Sisi.
With a keen focus on attracting foreign investment, the industry has embarked on a series of strategic initiatives aimed at
enhancing its competitiveness and appeal to the global business community.
These efforts have yielded impressive results, positioning Egypt as a highly attractive destination for international investors seeking to capitalize on the immense potential of the country’s mining sector.
What are the major milestones in the mining industry that played a role in this remarkable transformation?
Under the auspices of His Excellency Tarek Al Molla, the Minister of Petroleum and Mining, successful efforts have been made to optimize the mining landscape of Egypt.
A major milestone for the mining Industry in Egypt is that the government introduced a new mining code in 2020, designed to revamp the regulatory landscape and stimulate greater investment inflows into the sector
Building on this momentum, is the successful launch of its inaugural gold exploration
bid round in 2020, eliciting considerable interest from renowned mining firms and global investors.
Followed by the second bid round in 2021 in which our company Ankh resources was awarded a highly prospective gold concession, “Dara”, with the potential for a gold - copper porphyry mineralization.
Considering the global pandemic Egypt managed to attract 14 new companies, including major and junior industry players benefiting from the first mover advantage.
6
Another milestone to look forward to will be the launch of the Investment portal. What makes me feel really proud, coming from South Africa, is the companies announced executing the Portal Project are all South African companies. The MSA Group and Trimble’s Spatial Dimension and having witnessed the presentations delivered, I am most certain that having direct access to the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority will speed up the growth and development of the mining sector, tremendously.
Could you tell us a little bit more about the new mining code and the significance of this major milestone.
The New Mining code prepared by Wood Mackenzie under the
leadership of His Excellency Tarek Al Molla is aimed at transforming the regulatory framework from production sharing agreement (PSA) to become Rent Royalty and Tax system, which is more favorable for attracting investments and give Egypt a competitive advantage.
Although the initial exploitation terms were not considered entirely favorable, Both Government and Mining companies agreed to work proactively to create more favorable exploitation terms.
What are some of the key advantages of Investing in Egypt’s mining sector?
A: The Arab Nubian shield of Egypt has rich untapped mineral resources with significant
potential, including gold, copper, and other base and precious metals.
In order to unlock this potential, parallel to the introduction of the overhaul in regulatory framework, the Government invested in developing the infrastructure around the Eastern Desert, developing and constructing highways, seaports, airports, paving the way for mining companies to ease access to the mineral resource’s wealth.
Also bearing in mind, that the biggest discovery in the Arab Nubian Shield to date, is still the Sukari Gold Mine, which is considered one of the most profitable gold mines, an indication of the size of the untapped wealth of Egypt’s Eastern Desert.

What are some of the challenges faced by Investors in Egypt’s mining sector?
A: Like any other emerging country trying to develop its mineral resources sector, it is common to find a gap in the skills and expertise required by operating companies, which offers room for capacity building.
Another challenge is local content and supply chain, not having comprehensive service facilities to serve the developing industry, which opens the doors for further investments in the mining services sector.
What are some of the key factors
Investors consider, when taking a decision to invest in mining
Depending on which stage investors join an exploration project, but Political stability, regulatory framework and Geological potential are tied in first. Investors always look for a stable environment for their investment and Egypt offers a significantly stable environment.
Every investor wants the best return for the investment and in terms of geological potential, Investors would look at the recommended high mineral potential relying on their
competent management teams trying to identify the best value creating prospects. However, it’s always the Angel Investors who take the biggest risk. Known to all, mining is a long-term game and a long shot, but when it pays, it pays off big.
Infrastructure is another element Investors need to be assured that the necessary infrastructure or the framework for infrastructure is in place to support operations, including transportation networks, power supply, water supply, and communications.
Market demand is another factor being taken into consideration.
Women in Mining Magazine - August 2023 8
Raadiyah Emam - at Ankh Resources exhibition stand in Egypt Mining Forum
The demand for the minerals being mined is a critical factor in investment decisions. Investors assess the current and future demand for the minerals being mined, as well as the competitive landscape and market trends.
Since the majority of the market is in green field exploration
Financial factors such as the cost of mining, potential revenues, and potential return on investment including assessing factors such as labor costs, equipment costs, taxes, and royalties are important to investors.
Tell us about Ankh Resources
Ankh Resources is a Junior Exploration Company established in Jersey, UK. Co-founded by the CEO, Mostafa Talaat, A mining professional with strong local knowledge and international expertise. He was able to attract a group of Angel Investors who are successful entrepreneurs and highly accomplished business professionals, with a proven track record of success in the private investment sector.

Ankh Resources is always open to considering attractive
exploration opportunities relying on the company’s competent management team aligned with our investment goals and objectives in Egypt and the Arab Nubian Shield.
Please share your views on Environmental compliance.

The year was 2015 when I entered a small business competition, I was so excited and hopeful because
winning it could have really been good for my startup. But it didn’t go so well, I remember one judge telling me this and not in a nice tone:
“My dear , you look young, you still have time. Go look for something else to sell because right now you do not have a business. If you are still employed, keep your day job. We have met many entrepreneurs who tried selling PPE and they have failed dismally, it’s not an industry for young girls because it’s tough.”
Ouch, that was sore, disappointing, devastating, discouraging, you can name them all.
But deep down I knew that I knew that I had identified a gap in the market which was gonna set our business apart. I kept pushing , I put in the work and in a few months we signed long term contracts with some industry leading blue chip companies. And all of a sudden my business value proposition was validated.
I often refer to this process to that of a new mother who doesn’t have
experience nor a manual of how to raise a newborn baby. But develop this instinct ability to know how , when and what to do all the time and know when the baby isn’t well.
It is the same PPE business which
set me up for massive success and gave me an opportunity to grow as a businesswoman, buying other businesses and impacting the lives of hundreds of people through our work.
Three critical takeaways:
1. It is not all of us who are going to be innovators, for most of us it’s about taking an existing idea and repackaging or adding value to close a particular gap in the industry.
2. If you know that you know that you have an amazing idea, go for it. Sometimes you might not even be able to give all the data
and proof required to show its potential success but you believe and know that it is the one.
3. A lot of people only start believing and supporting you once you start demonstrating some level of winning, until then believe in yourself and do not give up on your dreams until you win.

Honour Women’s Month and deliver diversity
By Millicent Takalani Mulelu
The traditionally maledominated environment of the transport and logistics
industry, while not unique to Crossroads, is an area where meaningful change is long overdue.
“Personally, it’s been a privilege to find myself in this environment, having always worked in male-dominated spaces,” says Crossroads Distribution’s Marketing Executive, Millicent Takalani Mulelu. “It’s high time that we recognise the immense potential for cultural change within this industry.”
One observation is that many women tend to shy away from roles involving “soft skills” because they fear the perception of masculinity associated with the transport and logistics sector. However, there is an incredible opportunity for women to play a
significant and meaningful role in shaping the future of this field.
Consider the impact of women drivers delivering essential goods to clinics and schools; customers in these settings are often more inclined to relate to and feel comfortable with women drivers. It’s interesting to note that while we see a growing number of women engineers, the representation of women in truck driving roles remains limited. We must bridge this gap.
As more women begin to work in the transport and logistics industry, we will see a positive shift in the overall dynamics. Success breeds success, and as more women find success in their roles, the industry will become increasingly inviting to other talented women looking to make their mark.
“Here at Crossroads, we understand the importance of fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all employees,” says Mulelu. “We are
committed to driving the change needed to make this industry accessible for women who aspire to be mechanics, engineers, or drivers. Even seemingly small actions, such as providing femalefriendly facilities like toilets onsite and on the road, can have a profound impact on attracting and retaining female talent.”
As we celebrate Women’s Month, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the vital contributions of women in the transport and logistics industry and reflect on how we can collectively make this sector more inclusive and diverse.
By empowering and supporting women, we will unlock untapped potential and lead the way towards a stronger and more progressive future for our industry.

Benin unveiled 30m statue honouring the women warriors of Dahomey

Benin unveiled a 30m ‘Amazon’ statue honouring the women warriors of Dahomey, the inspiration of
countless movies: The presidential guard shrank to toy soldiers at the bare feet of a towering new bronze honouring the only documented all-female army in modern history.
Fortified by the Agojie strike force in what is now Benin, the Kingdom of Dahomey became one of Africa’s most powerful states in the 18th and 19th centuries. European colonisers who clashed with the women called them the Amazons after the merciless warriors of Greek mythology.
Organisers of the independence celebrations in Benin’s capital Cotonou battled to keep the 30m (98ft) likeness of the Agojie leader Queen Hangbe under wraps: the veil tugged down by President Patrice Talon at the official unveiling ceremony barely reached its knees.
“We don’t celebrate enough of what is gratifying in us, and in others, enough to instill pride in ourselves and in our community. What we sing daily to the point of sometimes baptizing them “Beninoiseries”.
“It’s time to get rid of this false complex that isolates us, divides us, makes us afraid of each other, inhibits us and feeds our underdevelopment. It is time to discover ourselves and to value what is great in us”, urges the Head of State during the inauguration of the monument”
“It is time to be aware and proud of what we are Benin: the successful fusion of these ancient great kingdoms and peoples that are the baatonou, berba, wassangari, yoruba, adja, fon, goun, waama, batammariba, yom , peulh, and many others; each as deserving as the other,” added President Patrice Talon.

Women surge ahead in technical fields, defying traditions
Women are increasingly finding their way into engineering,
scientific and other professional careers in industry, with less prejudice in traditionally male sectors like mining; but how can organisations retain and advance women in their ranks?
Interviewed during Women’s Month, three experienced professionals from SRK Consulting, a global firm of engineers and scientists, offered their nuanced insights into the entry and progress of women in industry over recent years.
With her mother in a respected role as a successful teacher, SRK principal consultant Livhuwani Lautze was not intimidated by the prospect of entering the professional environment. In fact, as a strong academic performer at school, many expected Lautze to become a doctor. Her preference, though, combined with the need for scholarship support, took her in another direction: geology. With a Master’s degree in geology, she has worked in the mining sector at operational and corporate level before joining the consulting field.
“The mining sector is certainly more accommodating of women than when I started work in mining operations over 15 years ago,” she said. “Then, women senior officials didn’t even have their own changing facilities for underground –although there has been noteworthy improvement in the industry.”

Implicit support
Both SRK principal geotechnical engineer Linda Spies and SRK principal environmental geologist Lindsay Shand had fathers in the engineering field – so there was implicit support for a similar career in science or engineering. In short, there were few limitations on their choice of occupational fields, and none of these women felt in the least drawn to historically female jobs in administration.
“It is true that I was one of just a few women in our geology classes at university, and there were occasions early in my career when I realised that I was the only women in a meeting of 10 or 20 men,” said Shand. “But this is not necessarily a drawback –
Gender expectations
Spies also noted that breaking into fields that have in traditionally been maledominated is perhaps not the most challenging aspect of transforming the workplace. Even though the professional levels of companies are increasingly filled by women, there are still underlying gender expectations regarding women’s roles outside of the workplace.
“It is undisputed that women perform as competently as men in these engineering and scientific professions, but they tend to still be expected to assume primary responsibility for child care and
although there could be the expectation that you have to do more to prove yourself at first; importantly, I wanted to be recognised as a scientist – not just because of being a woman in this field.”
other domestic roles,” she said. “This places an added burden on what they have to ‘juggle’ while wanting to give their all to a fulfilling career.”
Lautze added that mainstream social norms reinforce these expectations, making it the professional women’s role to keep a ‘tidy home’, for example, even while assuming the same work responsibilities as their spouses.
Redefining relationships
The evolution of the workplace and the growing opportunities for women in industry was also redefining relationships between
mothers and their children, Shand pointed out. While many mothers in a more privileged class environment could choose not to work while raising children, many women valued their professional life and achievements while not detracting from their commitment and affection for their family.
This raises the issue of retaining women in these high-powered careers while other responsibilities beckon and, significantly, when couples choose to start a family. She highlighted how some women must, or choose to, relinquish their career

trajectory when having children, however resuming this work at the appropriate level can be difficult, while fulfilling family commitments too.
Exposure
On the question of what would foster career opportunities for young women today, Lautze felt that exposure to opportunities was the key.
“There is a focus on science and maths these days, but your choice of study and career really needs to align with your aptitude,” she explained. “Without an aptitude and love for these subjects, you
are unlikely to find fulfilment in them.”
Both Lautze and Spies encouraged women in the professional space to encourage younger entrants and talk about their strong points to colleagues. This would help address the reticence among women from certain cultural environments to promote their abilities more openly. Mentoring is also a powerful strategy to nurture women in professional roles; Spies said she has benefitted greatly from SRK’s sponsorship and involvement in the International Women in Resources Mentoring Programme
(IWRMP), an annual crosscompany programme to promote and empower women to progress their careers.
Women adding value
This kind of support is part of the foundational work that opens up opportunities for the next generation. Lautze talked about her success in helping to grow young professional women into more senior roles in resource geology within the corporate environment – adding significant value to the business. Assuming similar levels of responsibility, a highlight in Spies’s career has been tackling a highly demanding tailings dam project from planning through to maintenance phase.
Shand has recently been tasked with driving a key strategic priority for SRK in the form of a Global Water Summit – to reinforce the central importance of water stewardship across the range of SRK’s engineering and scientific interventions.
The experience of these three successful professional women is testament to considerable transformation in the opportunities for women to enter highly skilled roles in industry. Time will tell how such an evolution will continue, and whether it will be supported by more equitable social norms and business accommodation of the many other valuable roles that women still carry outside of the workplace.

My congratulations go to the Students in Mining Engineering Society Women in MiningUniversity of the Witwatersrand & Students in Mining Engineering Society (SMES) at Wits for their effort in putting together an event that was real - the emotions in the room were so sincere and pure. A collection of hard-working, ambitious human beings that were looking to learn and grow. I genuinely feel proud to have been considered for an invitation to this event.
2. The power of mentorship & sponsorship.
We need to ensure that we empower one another - there is that saying about having people speak up for you in rooms that you were not in. Who sponsors and puts your name forward? Who are the people you can count on to think of you when an opportunity arises?
Events and opportunities don’t just happen, companies and people back these events and help dreams become a reality: credit to Mintek, 3rd Alternative Consulting Engineers (PTY) Ltd. and Dwarsrivier for helping these students realize their dream. in the International Women in Resources Mentoring Programme
3. The agenda was excellent, we got along like a house on fire.
Head of the School of Mining, Prof Cuthbert Musingwini opened the evening and welcomed us with the kindest of words.
Nhlanhla Mlambo graduated from WITS and is currently an engineer in training at Exxaro Resources - she shared her journey with respect to experience, financial education, and development.
Sazini Makamu, Senior Scientist at Mintek, spoke about building sustainable mines and how we can consider a test lab facility enabling students with work opportunities that will support their transition to the workplace - wishing you all the best with your mission!
Raksha Naidoo, CEO of the The Particle Group & Chairperson of Women In Mining South Africa
shared her story of how she began in a completely different processing environment to the one she finds herself in today and how starting and re-starting taught her to be resilient. She encouraged the students to work those long days and put in the effort because it is the only way to learn.

4. Topics on the minds of students at university right now:
- How to secure vacation work
- How to set boundaries
- What does vulnerability look like in the workplace?
- Challenges specific to women in the workforce
- How to find a good mentor
- How to network and build meaningful relationships
- Funding challenges
Overall the message I would summarise the conference with is that there is hope for the future of mining in South Africa. We have powerful young leaders that are ready to enter the workforce, humble themselves and lead our industry to great heights.
What a time to be alive, it has been an incredible journey so far

BONGIWE HEADBUSH
The mining sector has faced a new era of dynamic and most interllegent and professional
women in the history of mining.
As we celebrate the month of August, we look at one such woman, an ordinary young woman from PE who has made an impact in many lives of women around her life.
Mining is a very diversified industry, it’s quite interesting as a civil engineer. It has its own challenges - being known as male industry.
I challenged myself that I can do what men can do and do it perfectly as a woman and sometimes, do it better than them.
Challenges faced?
More than often the industry requires certain physical labour which raises some challenges to a certain extent. You wait much longer as a woman and have less sleep anticipating the responses.
It’s a technical space, you learn new things everyday, new challenges and new techniques. You learn to tackle issues as they come and put up a brave face just to remind yourself ‘why you do what you do’.

“Now women must step in and take up the space, start operating and take opportunities that are made available to them”
Role of Government in empowering women
Government is doing well interms of opening more space and transformation for women to coexist with men especially in these industries.
Policies have been amended in the mining charter and in the sector in order to allow active participation of women and affort them real opportunities that will change their lives for the better.
There is a great change which I think it’s quite significant. We still have a long way to go. We need more women leadership, executives, board members who will make sound decisions on behalf of women and marginalized.
Government is hard at work, creating a conducive environment for women to thrive, now women need to step in and take up the space and start operating and take opportunities that are made available to them.
It will serve no purpose if women don’t participate and take these opportunities to develop and empower themselves.
We need forums that create platforms to allow women to engage and be empowered with information sharing. Those at the helm must be involved in mentoring and be willing to support and empower a girl child so that women can stand firm and achieve that which they desire in the mining sector.
Daily responsibilities
Daily responsibilities besides running the business and engaging with my clients is creating a room for mentorship which is part of my CSI (Corporate Social Investment / Responsibility) I do manage my time very well and I’m grateful to God for presenting many opportunities in my life, it is therefore my duty as well to support young and upcoming entrepreneurs seeking business in the mining sector.
The journey of my life has been a series of life experiences, painful memories, many learning curves, tears and sweat, but perseverance and determination taught me a life lesson that institutions of high learning will not teach me. I’m grateful to my mentors and life support coaches who stood besides me and told me I can do it.
Today I’m proud to say I am a product of many selfless mentors who gave me a chance, who saw a leader in me, a a woman of character, someone who’s hungry for change and someone ready to change the lives of many people around her. Now I love empowering young people, bringing them awareness and awakening them about what is happening interms of economy, job creation and opportunities. Open their minds and broaden their thinking. They are not lazy, they don’t have information to empower themselves.
It is my passion to support those in need considering that we all come from different backgrounds, we have unique and special needs to address our situations.
What do you do when not working
I rest a lot on Saturdays, it’s the only “ME TIME” I have. It gets extremely busy during the week. Meetings, site visits, traveling, reports and late night sleeps.
Encouraging words.

Now I’m talking to black child, I’m saying to black child Wake up! Wake up black child and change the narrative story of your life.
“ “
Your background does matter but not as much as YOUR LIFE. Therefore take charge, you are important, you can be anything you want, anything you set your mind to it.
You deserve everything good and to be successful. Your yesterday should not determine your tomorrow.
Change how you see yourself. Whatever good you want to see in you or in your family, It starts with you. Tell yourself “IT STARTS WITH ME”, nobody has ever gotten anything good from your family, they’re gonna see it through you. Poverty and suffering ends with you, your family name will be lifted through you.
You can do anything you want. You are going to achieve everything you want. It all starts in your mind. All you need is clear vision. All you need is a clear plan. All you need is clear strategy
IT IS POSSIBLE YOU NEED TO START. NOW!!!!
