Welcome from the Director of Higher Education and careers

Very frustratingly the Covid restrictions of the last three years meant the cancellation of so many of our in person Futures events. Although Microsoft Teams and other platforms has enabled us to continue to connect students, virtually, with professional for a broad range of career areas, there is really nothing that can replace the benefits of meeting and chatting IRL. I am therefore delighted that this evening, after many months of work behind the scenes, we are able to welcome so many of you to the flagship event in our Futures programme.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all, especially the many parents, alumnae and friends of the school that are giving so generously of their time to inspire and inform our students.

Making decisions about your future, at any stage, can be a daunting and often overwhelming process.

Having the opportunity to meet with successful professionals working in a wide range of career areas is an invaluable part of the process. Experience tells us that even the briefest of chats can have a major impact on the future choices of our young people.

Of course, an event like this inevitably involves a huge amount of organisation and for that reason my thanks go to the Estates, ICT, marketing and catering teams for all their contribution to the smooth running of the evening. I am also indebted to all the staff at Wimbledon High School for their support in helping to source delegates and engage the students. Finally none of this would have been possible without the efforts of my colleague in the HE and Careers Department, David Ryde. He has been working tirelessly and with dedication to bring together a fabulously diverse range of people and organisations.

I hope you all leave feeling inspired and excited about the future.

We also welcome Willow Herold from InvestIN. InvestIN Education are an organisation dedicated to bridging the gap between school and industry through their immersive career experiences for students. They provide opportunities for students aged 12-18 at weekends and during the school holidays in 19 of the world’s most popular industries, from Medicine and Law,

through to more up and coming careers like Video Game Design. Their programmes are all run by top professionals in their fields and offer an invaluable insight into each career, through interactive activities, exclusive site visits, industry-specific career coaching and so much more
