Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus.
You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. A Reflection Dear friends in Christ, every year at the time of the Christian Passover we celebrate our redemption through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Lent is a time to prepare for this celebration and to renew our life in the paschal mystery. We begin this holy season by remembering our need for repentance, and for the mercy and forgiveness proclaimed in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We begin our journey to Easter with the sign of ashes, an ancient sign, speaking of the frailty and uncertainty of human life, and marking the penitence of the community as a whole. I invite you therefore, in the name of the Lord, to observe a holy Lent by self-examination, penitence, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, and by reading and meditating on the word of God. Let us kneel before our Creator and Redeemer.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES Sub-Saharan desert – in Morocco – was my first wilderness experience. In my mind’s eye, I can still see the stars when lying in the sand at night. How the temperature plummeted as dusk became nightfall. And I remember my fear of unintentional cohabitation with an opportunistic scorpion. Later, I spent time in the wilderness of Sinai and lived on the edge of the Judean desert. The brutal and strange beauty of the desert beguiles me to this day. Always on the first Sunday of Lent – in the three year cycle of readings – the Gospel proclamation speaks of Jesus fasting and being tempted in the desert. The Church is reminded that our observance of Lent leads us into a desert of the Spirit with Jesus. In my experience, there are remarkable similarities between the physical experience of being in the desert and the spiritual wilderness we enter during the season of Lent. When traversing a desert one is quickly forced to focus on priorities. Do I have enough water for the journey? What shelter will I have from the heat? Will I have sufficient food? The essentials of life are starkly evident. Our experience of Lent can be the same. What are
God’s priorities in my life? Upon what and whom does my life and well-being truly depend? Extreme conditions in a wilderness environment are clarifying. The physical world is starkly and terrifyingly beautiful in the heat of the sun. The fall of a shadow, an heroic grasp for life by vegetation, or the path of an abandoned watercourse, each has its own beauty. Likewise, during Lent we can experience a new clarity about our lives and relationships. Curiously, the desert can be a remarkably noisy place. In the midst of silence we are forced to listen to ourselves: some memories and conversations seem stuck on repeat, waiting to be processed and freed. Sometimes feelings and thoughts, previously buried by the business of life, emerge and challenge us: so likewise when we observe Lent. Lent is the springtime of the soul. It is a season of grace. Springtime in the desert has a wild and fragile beauty that is brief and wild with abandon. Fr. Mark Greenaway-Robbins

MAKE A MOTHER’S DAY This year the Mothers’ Union Make a Mother’s Day Campaign is to be held during Lent, starting this Sunday, March 2 and finishing on Mothering Sunday, March 30. This timing brings it in line with the UK Mothers’ Union campaign, where Mother’s Day has traditionally been celebrated on Mothering Sunday, unlike the North American celebration in May. The Mothers’ Union already recognizes Mothering Sunday by the giving of flowers to mothers and simnel cake to parishioners, so it seems a natural progression to extend it to the Make a Mother’s day campaign.
In years gone by it was a tradition at St. James to make an offering daily by filling up a Lenten card. We no longer do this but this year Mothers’ Union hopes parishioners will think about giving a sacrificial Lenten offering to help a family in need. All but two of the gifts are under $30. You will notice on the catalogue that there are two gifts designated to the Parenting Program in Canada’s North. Now that we have two Trainers of Facilitators in Canada, we are working towards taking the Parenting Program to the Diocese of the Arctic. You will find the catalogues in a holder in the Narthex. CELEBRATE WITH CANON DOUGLAS WILLIAMS Tuesday, March 11th, 7 p.m. Rev. Canon Douglas Williams will celebrate Mass in Christ Church Cathedral, on the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood, with a reception following in the Park Room. RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIP FELLOWSHIP SUNDAY: TODAY Sunday March 2nd after High Mass, approximately 12:00pm Parish Hall We are seeking members to join an organizing group to help coordinate these Sundays during the year, and we also need volunteers to help coordinate the food arrangements. Please let the Office, or one of the clergy, know if you are interested. The scheduled dates for the 2014 "Fellowship Sundays" are: March 2 / May 4 / June 15 / July 27 / September 28 / October 26 and November 23. This will be a fun and exciting new opportunity in keeping with our third mission objective which is to develop Relationships and Fellowship. The Sunday Formation session and the Coffee Hour will not be held on "Fellowship Sundays." Coffee hour will also be cancelled on those Sundays.

Vancouver film launch features: Moderated panel with Rupert Richardson, Charlene Linklater, Yvonne Rigsby-Jones, and director Lisa Jackson. Special performances by hip-hop artist Ronnie Dean Harris and Cellist Cris Derksen. The film was sparked by the Interfaith Institute and Indian Residential School Survivors Society multimedia event Ignite the Light: Generational Expressions of Colonization, Social Justice and the Legacy of Indian Residential Schools (2011).

DIDO’S “DID YOU KNOW?” The observance of Lent may comprise, “self-examination, penitence, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, and by reading and meditating on the Word of God,” (BAS ,. 282) Lent is a good time of year to review, or start, a rule of life, which is a tool from the Tradition of the Church for our daily conversation to Jesus Christ. Here is a point of departure: “Every Christian man or woman should from time to time frame for her/himself a RULE OF LIFE in accordance with the precepts of the Gospel and the faith and order of the Church; wherein he/she may consider the following: The regularity of his/her attendance at public worship and especially at the holy Communion. The practice of private prayer, Bible reading and selfdiscipline. The boldness of his/her spoken witness to his/her faith in Christ. His/her personal service to the Church and the community. Today we honour John and Charles Wesley, who launched the Methodist revival in the eighteenth century Church of England. Brought up in a strict Anglican parsonage, the two brothers both became priests with a demanding sense of purpose. In the year 1738, they each experienced “conversion of the heart” and went forth to help others know the same assurance of God’s love. In one of their later writings they described themselves “as messengers of God to those who are Christians in name but heathens in heart, to call them back. . . to real, genuine Christianity.” Wherever they went their mission drew immense crowds, who often responded with uncontrollable fervour. But the Wesleys did more than preach to the crowds; they also developed a network of support-groups in order to sustain the revival. Hymnsinging became a prominent feature of these Methodist meetings, because the Wesleys understood the power of good hymns to teach sound doctrine and heartfelt religion. Charles alone wrote nearly 6,000, and a good many are still cherished by all English-speaking Christians — for instance, “Hark, the herald angels sing,” “Christ, whose glory fills the skies,” and “Love divine, all loves excelling.” In time, much to the grief of the Wesley brothers, a large section of the Methodist movement separated from the Church of England and organized its own family of churches. But the brothers’ work also endured in Anglicanism itself and gave it a new vitality, so that our whole tradition is in debt to their evangelical witness.
We honour the memory of Perpetua, a young woman of Carthage who was martyred for the faith on this date in the year 202. We also remember four other Christians who suffered with her — a slave-woman named Felicitas, a priest, Saturus, a man named Saturninus, and a slave, Revocatus. These people were denounced to the pagan Roman authorities and condemned to death. When the appointed day came, they were led into the public arena and a number of wild animals were loosed upon them. All managed to survive this ordeal — as it was intended they should. After a short interval they were again led into the arena, so that the crowd could see them dispatched with the sword. Perpetua and her companions exchanged the kiss of peace, then mounted the platform one by one to die. Perpetua herself was the last to be executed. Soon afterwards a Christian eyewitness wrote an account of their sufferings, and this document captured the imagination of the whole Church, so that Perpetua and her companions came to be venerated throughout the Christian world.
