Christmas Lessons & Carols

Third Sunday of Advent | December 15, 2013 | 4:00 pm

Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy.

VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES •To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God.

Lessons & Carols for Christmas PRELUDE: Choralvorspiele, Op. 122/8 "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen" - Brahms ORGAN VOLUNTARY INTROIT: O Nata Lux - T. Tallis O nata lux de lumine, Jesu redemptor saeculi, dignare clemens supplicum laudes preces que sumere. Qui carne quondam contegi dignatus es pro perditis Nos membra confer effici, Tui beati corporis. O Light of light, by love inclined, Jesu, redeemer of mankind, With loving-kindness deign to hear from supplicant voices praise and prayer. Thou who to raise our souls from hell didst deign in fleshly form to dwell, Vouchsafe us, when our race is run, in thy fair Body to be one. BIDDING PRAYER

Stand

Beloved in Christ, as we prepare for Christmas-tide let it be our care and delight to hear again the message of the angels: readying in heart and mind to go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in the manger. Therefore, let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience unto the glorious Redemption brought us by this Holy Child. But first let us pray for the needs of the whole world; for peace on earth and goodwill among all his people; for unity and brotherhood within the Church he came to build, and especially in this our diocese. And because this would rejoice his heart, let us remember in his name the poor and the helpless, the cold, the hungry and the oppressed; the sick in body and in mind and them that mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; and all who know not the Lord Jesus, or who love him not, or who by sin have grieved his heart of love. CHRISTMAS LESSONS & CAROLS | 3

Lastly let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no man can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom we for evermore are one. These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of heaven, in the words which Christ himself hath taught us: Our Father... All

All

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. The Almighty God bless us with his grace; Christ give us the joys of everlasting life; and unto the fellowship of the citizens above may the King of angels bring us all. Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON

Be seated

God announces in the Garden of Eden that the seed of woman shall bruise the serpent’s head. Genesis 3 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it 4 | CHRISTMAS LESSONS & CAROLS

shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Thanks be to God.

God promises to faithful Abraham that in his seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. Genesis 22 And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, and said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. Thanks be to God.

CAROL

Be seated Magnificat (Second Service) - W. Byrd My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded : the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth : all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me : and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him : throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm : he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat : and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things : and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel : as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

THE THIRD LESSON Christ’s birth and kingdom are foretold by Isaiah. Isaiah 9 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. Thanks be to God. CAROL

Be seated For Unto Us a Child is Born - G.F. Handel (Choir) For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government Shall be upon His shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

THE FOURTH LESSON

The prophet Micah foretells the glory of little Bethlehem. Micah 5 But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Therefore will he give them up, until the time which she travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel. And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth. Thanks be to God.

CAROL

Stand O Little Town of Bethlehem - traditional, arr. R. Vaughan Williams, descant by Armstrong (Choir and Congregation) O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep, the silent stars go by Yet in thy dark streets shineth, the everlasting Light The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight O morning stars together, proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth! For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him still, the dear Christ enters in. O holy Child of Bethlehem descend to us, we pray Cast out our sin and enter in be born to us today We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell O come to us, abide with us our Lord Emmanuel CHRISTMAS LESSONS & CAROLS | 7

THE FIFTH LESSON

The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary.

St Luke 1

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. Thanks be to God.

Be seated Lullay My Liking - traditional 15th cent., arr. G. Holst (Choir) Lullay my liking, my dear son, my sweeting; lullay my dear heart, mine own dear Darling.

THE SIXTH LESSON St Luke tells of the birth of Jesus.

Be seated St Luke 2

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, 8 | CHRISTMAS LESSONS & CAROLS

that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. Thanks be to God.

CAROL

Be seated O Magnum Mysterium - T. Luis de Victoria (Choir) O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentem in praesepio! Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum. Alleluia! O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord, lying in a manger! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear Christ the Lord. Alleluia!

THE SEVENTH LESSON The shepherds go to the manger.

Be seated St Luke 2

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. Thanks be to God.

Stand The First Nowell - traditional, arr. D. Willcocks (Choir and Congregation) The first Noel the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay tending their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Refrain Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel. They lookèd up and saw a star shining in the east, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. Refrain And by the light of that same star three Wise Men came from country far; To seek for a King was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went. Refrain This star drew nigh to the northwest, over Bethlehem it took its rest; And there it did both stop and stay, right over the place where Jesus lay. Refrain Then entered in those Wise Men three, full reverently upon the knee, And offered there, in his presence, their gold and myrrh and frankincense. Refrain Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our heavenly Lord; That hath made Heaven and earth of naught, and with His blood mankind hath bought. Refrain

THE EIGHTH LESSON The wise men are led by the star to Jesus.

Be seated St Matthew 2

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of JudĂŚa: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. Thanks be to God.

God of God, Light of Light, Lo, he abhors not the Virgin’s womb; Very God, begotten, not created; Refrain See how the shepherds, summoned to His cradle, Leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze; We too will thither bend our joyful footsteps; Refrain Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation; O sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest; Refrain THE NINTH LESSON The congregation stands for the Ninth Lesson. St John unfolds the great mystery of the Incarnation.

St John 1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. That was the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Thanks be to God. 12 | CHRISTMAS LESSONS & CAROLS

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES So the world has celebrated the “heavenly birthday” of Mandela. “Each Easter marks the rebirth of our faith. It marks the victory of our risen saviour over the torture of the cross and the grave. Our Messiah, who came to us in the form of a mortal man, but who by his suffering and crucifixion attained immortality. Our Messiah, born like an outcast in a stable, and executed like criminal on the cross. Our Messiah, whose life bears testimony to the truth that there is no shame in poverty: Those who should be ashamed are they who impoverish others.” Nelson Mandela spoke these words at a Zionist Christian Church Easter Conference in 1994. “Mandela had courage that showed itself in leadership. He stood out, resisted, and fought… Resisting evil is a call of God. Christians disagree about whether force is justifiable, but are at one that resistance is essential. Easy to say, how hard to act! More than that, the act of resistance opens our souls to harm. In fighting hatred, we risk becoming what we resist.” So preached Archbishop

Justin Welby at a Mandela Memorial at St-Martin-in-theFields, London on Dec. 8th. He went on to quote Archbishop Desmond Tutu: “"I often surprise people when I say this. Suffering can lead to bitterness. But suffering is also the infallible test of the openness of a leader, of their selflessness. When Mandela had gone to jail, he had been one of the most angry. The suffering of those 27 years helped to purify him and grow the magnanimity that would become his hallmark. Jail helped Mandela learn how to make enemies into friends. It also gave him an unassailable credibility. When you speak of forgiveness, 27 years in prison sets you up very nicely.” At Mass during Advent, in the words of the proper preface, we pray that as we look for the second coming of Christ “we, without shame of fear, may rejoice to behold his appearing”. May Mandela now rejoice in the nearer presence of Christ.

ADVENT MESSAGE FROM THE FLOWER GUILD St. James’ is now in a season of penitential purple and no flowers - except for today, when pink flowers on the High Altar anticipate the rosy dawn of Christmas. Advent is the time of preparation for Christmas, of making ourselves more worthy of the great gift that God is preparing for us. Concentrating as we are on our own unworthiness (perhaps even guilt), giving thanks tends to become less important, and flowers are all about giving thanks. But wait! Advent will end and God’s great gift to us will be born to Mary in the stable in Bethlehem. Our gratitude can pour forth in flowers. The Flower Guild receives no money from Church funds, but depends entirely on free-will offerings from you – the congregation. We count on you to help us show the gratitude of St. James’ to God for the greatest gift of all – his own son. Please remember the Flower Guild in your Christmas budget and light up St. James’ with flowers of thanksgiving. Margaret Vickers All Christmas flower offerings go toward beautifying the whole Church for Christmas. Please email or phone the Church Office by 9 am on Monday, December 16th, with the wording of your dedication. All dedications will appear in the Christmas bulletins, which are being printed on December 17, so please contact us before the deadline! Linda Adams & Deanna Ferguson

OUTREACH TO THE WORLD LOWER MAINLAND CHRISTMAS BUREAU Each year the Christmas Bureau provides help to families who have low incomes or are on social assistance. Food gift certificates and toys are given to families with children between Wednesday, December 4 and Friday, December 20, upon registration. Complete packages are available in the Narthex with all the information, and the registration requirements. If you think you qualify, or if you know someone who could use the help, please pick up a package and spread the word. COMING HOME SOCIETY NEWS The Coming Home Society’s annual newsletter is available in the Narthex. Please take one and read about the Society’s work with young Aboriginal women at Young Wolves Lodge in 2013, and the celebration of its 10th Anniversary! On January 1st the Coming Home Society will be launching its first website. You will find us at www.cominghomesociety.com so check in regularly for news and updates. The website will make it easy for you to contact us, and easy for you to help in this important work of healing and reconciliation. In 2014 the Coming Home Society will not be one of the programs sponsored through the “Care & Share” diocesan outreach program. Its mandate has changed to providing seed money for new programs. The Coming Home Society now needs your support more than ever. You can give here at St. James through your offering envelopes. Our Envelope Secretary will forward your donations directly to the Coming Home Society. Our new website will also offer multiple ways for you to make contributions to the Society. Just visit the

ADVENT ROSARY PRAYERS ON SUNDAYS Rosary prayers - the Joyful Mysteries - will resume on Sundays before High Mass during Advent. 9.45 am in the Lady Chapel. Please speak to Fr. Mark if you would like to know more, or be willing to share in leading this devotion. THE UNCLUTTERED HEART: MAKING ROOM FOR GOD DURING ADVENT with Leah Postman Saturdays: December 21 10:30 am – 12 pm, May Gutteridge Room As we enter into one of the busiest, most pressured and distractible times of the year, how are we able to create space in our inner and outer lives in preparation for the birth of Christ? You are invited to join in a fourweek Advent series which will endeavour to be a place that allows for letting go of the demands of the season and the opportunity to clear away obstructions to God—our worries, distractions, negative habits—so that our hearts and spirits are open to God’s movement during this holy time. OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE STREET OUTREACH GIFT CARDS Again this Advent, Fr. Matthew is receiving Gift Cards for distribution to disadvantaged members of our parish community. Favourite brands include: Tim Horton's, McDonalds, Army & Navy, and Subway. Suggested card amount is $10. This purchases a full meal and possibly a separate coffee, or for groceries at Army & Navy. Other amounts are most welcome. If possible, at time of purchase, request a receipt for each card. This provides a backup for the credit. Please drop off at Church Office, or directly to Fr. Matthew on Sunday. THANK YOU – OUTREACH FUND Many thanks go to Dr. John Conway, who donated the sum of $500 to the Outreach Fund. If others would like to do the same to this or any other church ministry, please mark your donation clearly on your envelope.

In January 2014, construction will begin on the conversion of the former Remand Centre located at Powell and Gore. The upper floors have sat vacant for the last 11 years and are now being rebuilt into 96 units of low income and affordable housing. What were originally detention cells will be repurposed into bright, airy residential units that will be operated by The Bloom Group (formerly St. James Community Service Society) in partnership with BladeRunners. Construction of this important project is expected to take a year and will include some evening and weekend work. You are invited to meet the project team, hear about the construction plan, and ask any questions.

DIDO’S “DID YOU KNOW?” THE O-ANTIPHONS These antiphons are traditionally said, or sung, before and after the Magnificat daily at Evening Prayer on the seven days, in the Roman usage, preceding Christmas Eve (17-23 Dec.). We do so every day at St. James. The name derives from the initial “O”, since each begins with this interjection. See page four this week and next for the full text of the antiphons, or take a copy of the St. James daily Office booklet for Advent, available in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The hymn “O come, O come, Emmanuel”, translated by John Mason Neale, is based on these O-Antiphons. The texts of the O-antiphons are a mosaic of scriptures from the Prophetic and Wisdom books. They were in use since the eighth century. O Sapentia (Wisdom / Eccl. 24.5); O Adonai (Lord / Ex. 6.13); O Radix Jesse (Root of Jesse / Isa. 11.10); O Claris David (Key of David / Rev. 3.7; cf. Isa. 22.22); O Oriens (Radiant Dawn / Zech. 6.12); O Rex Gentium (King of All Nations / Hag. 2.8); O Emmanuel (God-with-us / Isa. 7.14; 8.8). The Sarum rite (a modification of the Roman rite used at the cathedral church of Salisbury and in widespread use throughout England before the Reformation) began the antiphons on Dec. 16 and provided an additional eighth antiphon for Dec. 23 O Virgo virginum (Virgin of virgins) this arrangement was reflected in the calendar of the BCP.

ANNUAL VESTRY ANNUAL REPORTS FOR FEBRUARY 2014 VESTRY MEETING Please submit the Annual Report for your group or guild by December 31, 2013. The Office needs time to compile the reports for the Annual Vestry Meeting on Sunday, February 23 2014, so the earlier we receive your submissions the easier it will be for us. Thank you! Linda & Deanna, Office Managers
