Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES • To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection There is good news since the Stewardship pledges have topped $96,386 toward our goal of $230,000—the sum needed to ensure our ongoing worship and service, the sacred yet practical alliance that constitutes the dynamic presence of St. James’ here in Vancouver. The better news is that we all, whatever our talents—monetary and personal—have the opportunity to sustain the worship and service through Stewardship (and for some us to complete and submit our pledges!). For among all the garbled and bad news, ideas and vibes, that slash at our hearts and minds, and even persons, the worshiping and serving community of St. James steadily enacts the Good News of the Gospels. Every day the parish nurtures both the trinity of worship and the trinity of service, as represented in those enduringly wonderful words: Faith, Hope and Love [Charity]. Our Stewardship pledges assure the heritage of living belief enshrined in St. James’, now and into the future—through the work of the guilds and our community outreach, as well as the visibility and functioning of our remarkable church in this neighbourhood. Indeed, features of the church building Stewardship pledges help sustain articulate that powerful amalgam of worship and service. The entrance engages directly with a crossroads of business, inviting in people from many backgrounds to a sanctuary of reverent refocusing, recharging of our daily lives; a place of beauty in architecture, music and liturgy. The unending rhythm of arches and the changing volumes and vistas that seem to clarify thought but also to evoke Christ's promise of “many mansions”. The pervasive, changing light intimates divine truth while bringing comfort no less than inspiration. And lastly the manner in the elevated and elevating space of the church embodies sacred purpose. In such ways Stewardship, in enabling our worship and service together and in the community, brings alive the best news, the Good News of the Gospel. The Liturgy of the Word THE OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Isaiah The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths." For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord! Isaiah 2:1-5

THE EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Romans 13:11-14

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and face the book of the Gospels
But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. Matthew 24:36-44

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES
Careerism in the church has a pedigree. Possibly the earliest recorded instance dates to James and John, the apostles, who asked Jesus, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” (Mark 10.37) Whose glory do we seek? For those of us in holy orders especially, anything that draws us away from directly serving God’s people is a demotion. Surely. The values of this world can be resisted by the church. What is promotion in the Kingdom of God? It is ever and only to hear the words: “Well done good and faithful servant… enter you into the joy of your lord.” (Matthew 25.14-30) The phrase “Promoted to Glory”, used by members of the Salvation Army when referring to the death of a Salvationist, captures this truth of the Kingdom.
Look at the cornerstone of St. James’ Church on Gore Avenue. You will see that the foundations of this Church were laid, “to the greater glory of God” (Ad majorem Dei gloriam). One of the marks of servant ministry, which can be exercised by any Christian, is to dedicate our endeavours, whatever they may be, to the greater glory of God. Jesus’ repost to the ambitions of his disciples was stark: “whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all.” (Mark 10.43-44)

STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN
ARE YOU BEHIND IN YOUR GIVING? At this time of year, if you would like to see where you are at with your pledged giving, please contact Philip via the office (office@stjames.bc.ca or 604.685-2532) who can provide that information for you.
INTENTION CARDS – UPDATE We are delighted with the generosity of parishioners who at this early stage have completed 39 intention cards totalling $96,386 (correct as of Nov. 24th). In 2013 parishioners returned 73 intention cards and thereby committed a total amount of $144,722 to our ministry and mission budget. Our target amount in 2014 is $230,000 – which is the projected total of all regular giving and donations to Parish expenses. Don’t forget: if you are part of the pre-authorized debit arrangement (PAD) from your credit card, or bank account, please fill out a new intention card for 2014. Remember, if your circumstances change you are not bound to give the amount you pledged. It is an expression of commitment which can change during year depending on your circumstances.
BUDGET 2014 AND THE STREET OUTREACH INITIATIVE SOI’s budget and their request for additional funding was received after the Annual Financial Vestry Meeting on November 17th. However, this increase was intimated in the letter from the Trustees that accompanied copies of the Budget. As a result, at a meeting of the Trustees held on November 26, it was decided that we should go ahead with funding in the amount of $28,850 as requested for 2014, and leave the amount listed in the Budget as it was. Please give as generously as you are able to this incredible parish outreach, so the offset “gap” between the amount of donations to this increased funding won’t get any bigger!

OUTREACH TO THE WORLD SUPPORTING THE PHILIPPINES - PWRDF Long time PWRDF partner Cebu Bohol Relief and Rehabilitation Centre (CRRC) reports that 90% of the 60,000 residents from the 16 Barangays/communities in 6 municipalities with whom CRRC has been working for years are affected by the recent disaster. PWRDF’s other long time partners Farmers’ Development Centre (FARDEC) and Southern Partners Fair Trade Centre (SPFTC) along with CRRC mobilized resources from incountry donations and reached out to the affected families with food, water, clothing and medicines. These partners have identified 525 of the most vulnerable families in the remote areas of Bantayan Island whom they will provide with rice, dried fish, sardines, cooking oil, puritabs and plastic sheets for temporary shelter utilizing PWRDF’s grant. As a member of the ACT Alliance, PWRDF has contributed to the $14.1 million ACT response to Typhoon Haiyan. Between November 9 and December 9, 2013, all donations received for typhoon relief from Canadians by registered charities—including PWRDF—will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Canadian government. The government will use the matching funds to provide assistance through international and Canadian humanitarian organizations. Donations can be made on-line at http://pwrdf.org/donate LOWER MAINLAND CHRISTMAS BUREAU Each year the Christmas Bureau provides help to families who have low incomes or are on social assistance. QUOTE OF THIS WEEK In our episcopally led and synodically governed dioceses and provinces, we rejoice in the diverse callings of all the baptized. As outlined in the ordinals, the threefold servant ministries of bishops, priests and deacons assist in the affirmat ion, coordination and development of these callings as discerned and exercised by the whole people of God. DIDO’S “DID YOU KNOW?” The custom at St. James’ is that the Litany (or Great Litany as it is also known) is sung on the first Sunday of Advent and the Sundays of Lent, except Laetare Sunday (Forth Sunday in Lent). According to our Prayer Book tradition the Litany is to be said on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays. These directions may first be found in the Prayer Book of 1559. Even our authorized Canadian BCP of 1962 recommends that the Great Litany be used “at least once a month on a Sunday”! (BCP p.30) Why not have a go on your own? (See the BAS pp.138-143) It was the first vernacular service to be authorized officially in England and was published on May 27, 1544. Thomas Cranmer drew on Latin litanies in use in England, Martin Luther’s Latin Litany of 1529 and the Deacon’s Litany in the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. A litany (from the Greek meaning ‘a supplication’) is a form of prayer consisting of a series of petitions to which there is a fixed response. One further litany well known to parishioners from its use at the Easter Vigil and at Baptisms is the Litany of the Saints. You may wish to explore more, such as the Litanies of Loreto, the Holy Name, St. Joseph and the Most Precious Blood. These and many more may be found in a rich Catholic Anglican resource, Saint Augustine’s Prayer Book. In my household the word is that after the Great Litany there is nothing left to be prayed!
SAINTS THIS WEEK Nicholas Bishop of Myra, c. 342 – Commemoration December 6 Nothing is certain about his life, but the people of the Church held him in high honour from a very early date and many stories came to be told about him. The most famous of these legends tells of his merciful generosity. Once there were three sisters whose parents were so poor that they thought of selling them. Bishop Nicholas heard of the sisters’ plight and tossed three bags of gold onto their doorstep – thus providing them with dowries for marriage and saving them from a life of prostitution. That is why he is considered the special protector of children. In memory of his deed of mercy to the three sisters, the Dutch developed the custom of giving gifts to children on his feast-day. For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for All Saints’ Day, (ABC, 1994)
Ambrose Bishop of Milan, Teacher of the Faith, 397 December 7 Whilst trying to bring peace to the Christian community, with Arianism and orthodoxy each trying to gain the election of its man as bishop, Ambrose, known and respected by all, though not yet baptized, found himself being urged to accept the role of bishop himself, the gathered Christian populace taking up the cry, “Ambrose for bishop.” He finally accepted and was baptized and consecrated on this day in the year 374 . . . He is credited with being the first person to introduce hymns into Western worship, and wrote several hymns himself which gave a clear understanding of orthodox teaching. He also baptized the future St. Augustine. Ambrose died on Good Friday, 4 April in the year 397. Celebrating the Saints, (Canterbury Press, 1998)

ADVENT PASTORAL LETTER Dear Parish Members and Friends, We are writing at this time to share the current findings of the Parish Review. Joyful expectation characterizes Advent and also our hope for St. James’ as we look forward to initiating the Mission and Ministry Plan, which is the Parish Review in action. OVERVIEW The April session of the Parish Council marked the beginning of this season of review. Three questions have been at the heart of this review: What is our essential and core vocation – our calling – in Christ Jesus? What is God asking us to surrender in our life? What is God calling us to initiate? These questions were designed to equip us to reflect prayerfully upon our common baptismal vocation. Active listening and reporting has characterized the substance of the review process. The findings have then been made available to the whole Parish through regular updates, and with invitations for any parishioner to contribute. Yet there was never any blueprint or special agenda for the Parish Review. Rather, this activity has been a journey of discovery. We would like to thank the overwhelming spirit of openness, generosity, and participation by many parishioners. We have been struck by the imaginative thinking and readiness for change which has characterized this season of review. GOALS FOR MINISTRY AND MISSION AT ST. JAMES’ A new vision for our physical resources The first priority is to ensure that all our physical resources are well kept and fully maintained; the second is to re-envisage the use of our buildings for worship and service. • Phase one: Develop a comprehensive maintenance plan for all our physical resources along with a financial plan for implementation. • Phase two: Identify the options with associated costs for a Parish Mission Centre, with street front access, which will consolidate all our offices and spaces for the work of guilds and ministries. • Phase three: Initiate a programme of opening the Church for prayer, and also for pastoral care that will be supported by both laity and clergy. We are committed to re-imagine the use of all our physical resources, and so to enhance our presence and engagement with the neighbourhood and beyond, and to make more accessible our catholic liturgical and sacramental tradition. Some concerns that may involve sacrifices have been clearly articulated for reflection and action. These include the leasing of the Parish Hall with its adjoining rooms, and the renovating of the crypt. 32 | THE THURIBLE
ADVENT PASTORAL LETTER Opportunities for growth in discipleship and service One Sunday a month (approximately), after High Mass, we are committed - and ask the Parish to join us in providing a fellowship lunch. This time will give us an opportunity to have fun together: for example, to discuss a book, watch a film, have instruction in the faith or devotional practices, participate in a religious drama, even to dance! A rich variety of activities based around a fellowship meal is possible. We encourage the Parish to redirect some, if not all, of the energy and resources that we previously put into midweek potluck suppers towards monthly Sunday fellowship. Furthermore, because of the steady flow of enquirers and new parishioners at St. James’, we commit to restart a New Members Ministry, with the mandate of incorporating these new parishioners into fuller membership and fellowship. Lay and ordained leadership We are committed to serve the Parish on the current model of a partnership between the Rector, Street Outreach Priest, honorary priests, and deacons. We support specialized short term positions to enrich the work of the Parish; and we give thanks for the resources given to employ a Youth Support Worker. ADVENT AND BEYOND The Ministry and Mission Plan will be made available to the January session of the Parish Council. This plan is a fruit of the review process; and during the yearly cycle of Parish life, it will be revisited, reviewed, and revised. Many excellent ideas for ministry and mission were articulated but which cannot be acted upon at this time; however, these ideas will be recorded in the Ministry and Mission Plan for future reference. Already we are witnessing fruitful results from the Review. The Trustees are creating a comprehensive action plan for the maintenance and renewal of our physical resources; The Thurible is a renewed weekly Parish communication; the website will be overhauled within the next few months; a Youth Support Worker will be hired in the New Year. Please speak to any one of us if you would like to know more. We give thanks to God, “whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine”. We offer this Parish Review to the Glory of God. Yours in Christ, The Trustees and Collegium of St. James Leslie Arnovick, Betty Carlson, Sr. Mary Christian Cross, Fr. Mark Greenaway-Robbins, Fr. Matthew Johnson, Joyce Locht, Graham Murchie, Brian Rocksborough-Smith, Mtr. Alexis Saunders, Paul Stanwood, Canon Douglas Williams, Reece Wrightman, and Angela Van Luven.
