Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex).
As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection If you want God, and long for Union with him, yet sometimes wonder what that means or whether it can mean anything at all, you are already walking with the God who comes. If you are at times so weary and involved with the struggle of living that you have no strength even to want him, yet are still dissatisfied that you don't, you are already keeping Advent in your life. All your hopes and disappointments, your joy and suffering, your achievements and failure, your ups and downs; none of it is wasted. Providing only that you consent, and hold to that consent without qualification, the work of grace is going on in you through the whole business of living, to hollow you out, to make you capax Dei as the old mystics used to say, able to receive God We are an Advent people. The season of Advent celebrates in symbolic form a reality of our own lives and of all men's destiny with God, because he who came in weakness at Bethlehem is he who will come again. Constantly he comes. He came as a man into our human situation, accepted human experience as his own and lived it through to the bitter end, in order that what was bitter might be turned into sweetness and human experience become an expression of his sacrificial, redeeming love. He has transformed it from the inside, and offered us the possibility of allowing him to transform it in our lives too. The one historical, unique birth at Bethlehem makes possible his birth in the many lives of those who will receive him, to whom he gives the power to become children of God. He is born in us continually as our minds, our actions, our reactions, our relationships, our experience and our prayer are Christified. But this is a lifetime's task, and we need to pray constantly from the still pre-Christian areas in us, “Come, Lord Jesus”. “Longing for God” The Coming of God, Dame Maria Boulding, OSB © SPCK 1982, p: 1,7 &9 Selected for the 2017 Advent Program of the RC Diocese of Arundel & Brighton, UK.

HYMN
Stand 14 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — The Advent of Our God The advent of our God With eager prayers we greet, And singing haste upon the road His glorious gift to meet. The everlasting Son Scorns not the Virgin's womb; That we from bondage may be won He bears a bondsman's doom. Daughter of Sion, rise To meet thy lowly King; Let not thy stubborn heart despise The peace he comes to bring. Let us pray. Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility, that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Isaiah. The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths." For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord! Isaiah 2:1-5

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord." Now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. Antiphon Jerusalem is built as a city that is at unity with itself; To which the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, the assembly of Israel, to praise the Name of the Lord. Antiphon For there are the thrones of judgement, the thrones of the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May they prosper who love you. Antiphon “Peace be within your walls and quietness within your towers. For my brethren and companions' sake, I pray for your prosperity. Because of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek to do you good." Antiphon Psalm 122 8 | SOLEMN MASS
SECOND READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Romans 13:11-14

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, “But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. Matthew 24:36-44

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible Clergy Notes “Coming, ready or not!” Do you remember the seeker’s signal in the children’s game ‘Hide and Seek’ that she is opening her eyes and beginning to search, whether or not the hiders have managed to find a secret refuge? Too late now, if you’re caught, you’re caught! This is the Advent call of Jesus too: “Coming, ready or not!” Jesus is on the lookout for each of us, whether we have prepared ourselves to welcome him, or we have chosen to run or hide away. He came in his birth at Bethlehem, in a stable of all places and with his parents on an enforced journey away from home; he and his family were soon to be refugees in a foreign land. He comes today in those around us, made in his image and likeness, our families and friends; those who are sleeping on the steps of St. James’ and in our streets. He breaks into our lives too in our bible reading, at home and in church, and when we come to celebrate Mass together. We believe that he will in the fulness of time come again in glory, presenting us to the Father in the renewal and fulfilment of all creation.
But let’s try to be ready, to recognise and welcome him whenever and however he comes!
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
Many Christians find Advent an appropriate time for selfexamination, to make their confession or to have a spiritual conversation with a priest or soulfriend. Your clergy are here for you: please feel free to make an appointment with any of them. May the Lord, when he comes, find us watching and waiting! Fr. Kevin

ORDO KALENDAR 2020 St. James’ 2020 Kalendar is now available, $15. Please see Reece Wrightman for your copy. FORMATION: PRAYING THROUGH ADVENT We will be looking at different types of prayer and how to wait patiently for Christmas when the pressure to move quickly is all around us. Wednesday night and Thursday morning sessions allow everyone to take part. Wednesday nights are 6 pm to 8 pm in the Parish Centre with a light supper-- Dec. 4, 11 & 18. Thursday sessions (Dec. 5, 12 & 19) are in the Parish Centre after Mass, 10:15 am – noon. Hot drinks will be available. Please register with Mother Lucy via email: lucy@stjames.bc.ca HOT SOX Please donate part-woollen work socks, or funds to purchase them, for the Mission to Seafarers There will be a box for them in the narthex. The Women’s Guild will be wrapping them on Wed. Dec. 11 at 10 am in the Parish Centre. The Mission was started from St. James’ in the 1890s, and is very much appreciated by seafarers who are far from home. “PURSE” FOR MOTHER LUCY. As many of you know, the people of St. James’ have always blessed their departing clergy with a “purse,” or collection of money to thank them for all they have done for us, and to assist them with transitioning to the next phase of their lives. To contribute to the purse, you can add some money or a cheque (with Clergy Discretionary Fund in the memo) to your Sunday offering envelope. Write clearly on the envelope the amount you are designating for the purse. You can also drop cash or a cheque off to the church office. Please make your contributions by Sun. Dec. 22 so that there is time to record and compile them before Mother Lucy's last Sunday, which is Dec. 29.
FLOWER DEDICATIONS FOR CHRISTMAS Christmas is rapidly approaching, and it is time to think about flower dedications for Christmas. Flowers are exceptionally expensive particularly at this time of year, and we spend $400 to $500 on the Christmas display. We depend on parishioners’ generosity to make the church as beautiful as possible, so the Flower Guild are asking you to consider whether you would like to dedicate flowers to a loved one or for personal gratitude for blessings received. If you would like to dedicate flowers this Christmas, we ask you to notify the office before the week of Dec 8 - 15 in order to get your dedication into the service booklet. You cannot specify a particular altar but just say “Christmas Flowers.” Many thanks, Celia Dodds (Flower Guild President)
RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS SJMA CHRISTMAS CONCERT Come celebrate the holiday season with us! Please note we are in a different location this year. Fri. Dec. 6, 6 pm Reception| 6:30 pm Concert Buddhist Temple, 220 Jackson Ave, Van. Tickets are by donation. MOTHERS’ UNION CHRISTMAS FOOD & CLOTHING DRIVE The Mothers Union and the Coming Home Society are once again sponsoring a Food and Clothing Drive for two organizations this Christmas – The Aboriginal Front Door and Warriors Against Violence. The Drive begins next Sunday and extends until Dec. 29. Please bring your items in a bag or box and leave them in or near the Baptistry.
The Aboriginal Front Door is a street-front drop-in, assisted by the friends and family of Kelvin Bee. At this time of year warm clothing is in high demand – parkas, gloves, mittens, toques, scarves and warm socks. As well, non-perishable food items such as canned soup, canned stew, beans, instant coffee, Ryvita, pancake mix and so on, would be most welcome. The Warriors Against Violence Society is supported by the Coming Home Society. It is a unique program that works with Aboriginal families and individuals to help them overcome domestic anger and abuse – one of the legacies of the Residential School system. January is a lean month, and Warriors Against Violence really appreciate having non-perishable food donations to pass on to the families who attend their workshops and healing circles. ADVENT 2019: A COMPANION The Diocese is offering a daily Advent meditation contributed by Archbishop Melissa and spiritual directors in the diocese. Nov. 25 to Tue. Dec. 10. This is also known as the White Ribbon Campaign. Encouraging people to talk about gender-based violence is critical in breaking the silence and stigma that victims can often face and removing myths that can keep people silent. Creating a safe and non-judgmental environment may encourage those experiencing gender-based violence to speak out. It is therefore important to be aware of how to respond and support those who disclose such experiences. THE THURIBLE | 27
Here are some general principles to consider: •Violence and abuse is always wrong and never acceptable. •The responsibility for the abuse lies with the perpetrator. •Ultimately, only the person experiencing abuse can decide what course of action to take. We invite all parishioners to wear the white ribbon if you are a woman and the moose hide square if you are a man and take this pledge: I pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls. care+share care+share is a diocesan program which invites parishes and individuals to support a particular ministry over a two-year period. In the past, our own Street Outreach Initiative has benefited significantly from care+share. Diocesan Synod nominated the Urban Aboriginal Ministry led by the Revd Vivian Seegers for support in 2020/21.
