Before Mass Photographs: please respect people’s privacy by refraining from taking photographs or videos of the service without explicit permission. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection ANNUNCIATION There is only one thing that prevents The gentle movement, heaven to earth: Not the fear which godly greeting brings, Nor cold presumption (God could never speak), Nor empty tomb, no barren heart, Nor eyes searching, voices how long blaze, Nor the silence where there should be praise, Nor the bitter taste of human failing; But the lack of trust that was promised Might in human flesh be born, achieved, Strength of human weakness blending, Tenderly the humble servant lifted, From the foetal cry the fatal ending. HYMN
Stand 14 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — The Advent of Our God The advent of our God With eager prayers we greet, And singing haste upon the road His glorious gift to meet. The everlasting Son Scorns not the Virgin's womb; That we from bondage may be won He bears a bondsman's doom.
Daughter of Sion, rise To meet thy lowly King; Let not thy stubborn heart despise The peace he comes to bring. On clouds of dazzling light, As judge he comes again, His scattered people to unite, With him in heaven to reign. Let evil flee away, Ere that great hour shall dawn, Let this old Adam day by day The new Man all put on.

Let us pray. Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility, that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Isaiah. O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence - as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil - to make your name known to your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at your presence! When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect, you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who works for those who wait for him. You meet those who gladly do right, those who remember you in your ways. But you were angry, and we sinned; because you hid yourself we transgressed. We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. There is no one who calls on your name, or attempts to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity. Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. Do not be exceedingly angry, O Lord, and do not remember iniquity forever. Now consider, we are all your people. Isaiah 64:1-9

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, leading Joseph like a flock; shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim. In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, stir up your strength and come to help us. Restore us, O God of hosts; show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. Antiphon
8 | HIGH MASS
O Lord God of hosts, how long will you be angered despite the prayers of your people? You have fed them with the bread of tears; you have given them bowls of tears to drink. Antiphon You have made us the derision of our neighbours, and our enemies laugh us to scorn. Restore us, O God of hosts; show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. Antiphon
Let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, the son of man you have made so strong for yourself. And so will we never turn away from you; give us life, that we may call upon your name. Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. Antiphon Psalm 80:1-7, 16-18
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind - just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you - so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:3-9

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, "In those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in clouds' with great power and glory. Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. Therefore, keep awake - for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake." Mark 13:24-37

Midnight’s peace their cry has broken, their urgent summons clearly spoken: "The time has come, O maidens wise! Rise up, and give us light; the Bridegroom is in sight. Alleluia! Your lamps prepare and hasten there, that you the wedding feast may share." Zion hears the watchmen singing. Her heart with joyful hope is springing; she wakes and hurries through the night. Forth he comes, her bridegroom glorious in strength of grace, in truth victorious: her star is risen, her light grows bright.

Therefore we sing to greet our King; forever let our praises ring.

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Another year gone and another year beginning! Advent is a beautiful time of anticipation but also of reflection for the many gifts of this past year at St. James’ and in our own lives. I know that you may see the word “reflection” and wonder how are we supposed to make time for that, now that alongside Advent is the mad dash of organizing for Christmas, tree trimming, work parties, gift purchases and of course the turkey dash at the local grocery store, throwing elbows to get the last one (not kidding, I’ve seen it!). Find these quiet moments, seek them out. You may want to spend
some time looking over the last year, examining it and giving thanks.
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
It may be that Christmas is not an easy time for you, and know that you are not alone in that. Perhaps this is the first Christmas without a loved one. It is good for us to be together here, in this place. It is good for us to give thanks for things past and things present, and it is good for us to share with each other when things are difficult. A great light is coming, and the darkness cannot overcome it, even during these shortened winter days. See you soon! Mother Lucy

FORMATION – THE SONGS OF ADVENT Thursdays Dec. 7, 14 & 21 at 6-8 pm in the Boardroom Sundays Dec. 10 & 17 at 12:30-2:00 pm in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel Jump into Advent with scripture and song! As familiar as we are with the songs of Christmas, there are four songs recorded in the Bible to celebrate the birth of Jesus that most of us aren’t familiar with. The angels sang a song to the shepherds. Mary sang a song to God after she had time to get over the shocking news that she was going to be the mother of the Savior. Simeon also had a song. Then there’s Zechariah’s song. Zechariah was an elderly priest who sang after being visited by an angel. This wasn’t like a Broadway musical—these people didn’t suddenly burst into song. But the ancient church captured their words and created songs known as canticles. For the Thursday evening slot, register with Mother Lucy as space is limited: lucy@stjames.bc.ca or let the office know if you are coming to the Sunday sessions so we know how many booklets and sandwiches we will need: office@stjames.bc.ca | 604-685-2532 ADVENT QUIET DAY Sat. Dec. 9, 10:00 am - 2:30 pm Advent is that special time, before Christmas, when we wait with hope and anticipation for the coming of Jesus Christ, our Lord. You are invited to take time to let go of the busyness of your day-today life and join us for a Quiet Day. Together, we
will explore a variety of ways to enter into the beauty of this sacred and holy time: through meditation, lectio divina, chanting in the style of Taize and labyrinth walking. Bring your own lunch. Please RSVP the office by Thurs. Dec. 7. FLOWER DEDICATIONS FOR CHRISTMAS Still several days to go before the big day but time to think about flowers for Christmas. If you are planning to donate flowers for Christmas please get your dedications into the office by Fri. Dec. 15 in order to get your dedication into the mass booklet. You will not be able to select a specific altar but just mention “Christmas Flowers”. These young people, many of whom are already parents, and some of whom are homeless, have a really tough time in the month after Christmas, when all their resources are exhausted. Your food donations will help enormously. This year, instead of putting your donations into bags, there will be decorated boxes under our very first St. James' Christmas tree, at the back of the church. Please bring any nourishing, nonperishable food donation you can contribute, and put it into one of the boxes. We will be collecting right up until the last Sunday in Advent, and the donations will be put together and distributed to needy youth in the week after Christmas. The new Coming Home Society newsletters are available in the Narthex this morning. Please take one and read about the Aboriginal youth that you are supporting with your prayers, your presence, and your financial and food donations. You are making such a difference in their lives!
