Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The Coming And God held in his hand A small globe. Look he said. The son looked. Far off, As through water, he saw A scorched land of fierce Colour. The light burned There; crusted buildings Cast their shadows: a bright Serpent, A river Uncoiled itself, radiant With slime. On a bare Hill a bare tree saddened The sky. many People Held out their thin arms To it, as though waiting For a vanished April To return to its crossed Boughs. The son watched Them. Let me go there, he said. RS Thomas

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, who sent thy servant John the Baptist to prepare thy people to welcome the Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of thy truth, to turn our disobedient hearts to thee, that when the Christ shall come again to be our judge, we may stand with confidence before his glory; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Isaiah. Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." A voice says, "Cry out!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, "Here is your God!" See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Isaiah 40:1-11

I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to him. Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Antiphon Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall spring up from the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven. Antiphon Psalm 85:8-11
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Second Letter of Peter. But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. 2 Peter 3:8-15A

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'" John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." Mark 1:1-8

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

UPDATE ON LEASE NEGOTIATIONS Dear Friends, I'd like to update you on the progress of our talks with the Saint James’ Music Academy (SJMA) about the possibility of their leasing Clinton Hall. Let me also tell you about the process of securing a lease. There are a number of consultative steps involved in following the diocese's rules for leasing parish property. We have a long way to go before we work out a final agreement with the music academy. Your input as parishioners is crucial to this process.
1. Our negotiations are just beginning. Acting as a subcommittee of the church Board of Trustees, and on their authority, the Oversight Committee spoke with SJMA representatives. We offered SJMA a rent based on a price-per-square foot recommended by our commercial real estate consultant. We have informed the SJMA that, unfortunately, we cannot offer them either storage or class-room space in the crypt as we need that space for our own programs and storage. They understand. We have also asked them to specify the start date of a lease. Currently the SJMA is discussing a summer start date. 2. After the SJMA and the Board of Trustees agree on a fair and acceptable rent, we will bring the full agreement we've negotiated to the parish for discussion. A Special Vestry Meeting will be called so that everyone can learn about potential specifications of the lease and voice any concerns they may have. 3. After vestry approval the lease agreement will be sent to the law firm of the diocesan council, George Cadman. George has offered to review the agreement and turn it into a formal, legal document, i.e. a lease. 4. Next the draft lease will go before the Diocesan Council, as required by the diocese. Council will review the lease in order to make sure that the parish and the church is protected legally. They will pass along any suggestions, and we will go from there. After the lease is approved, it can be signed by both parties. Let me end by reassuring you of our awareness that renting out the hall represents a major sacrifice to the parish. Hopefully we can secure a lease that provides a reliable source of income for the parish at the same
time it is sensitive to our own needs (and those of our partners, the Music Academy). With warm regards, Leslie Arnovick, Chair—Oversight Committee MOTHER ALEXIS ON LEAVE Mother Alexis is on leave for the month of December, so will not be responding to emails or phone calls during this time. BAPTISM DATES IN 2015 The sacrament of Holy Baptism will be offered on the following dates in 2015: Sunday, January 11 (Baptism of the Lord) Saturday night, April 4 (Easter Vigil) Sunday, May 24 (Feast of Pentecost) Sunday, November 1 (All Saints’ Day) We hope that we will have many candidates for baptism in the coming year! Please call the Church Office or speak to one of the clergy at least 3 weeks in advance of the date you select. This gives us time to arrange a baptismal preparation session for you if you are not familiar with the sacrament as offered at St. James’. We also need to ensure that the Rite of Holy Baptism is in the High Mass booklet for the Sunday you have selected. Please see one of the clergy if you would like more information about the sacrament of Holy Baptism. KID’S CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. DURING MASS: It is such a privilege and blessing to be able to worship alongside such a diverse group at St. James' and this especially includes worshipping with all the children. Whether children are in the back or sitting in the pews, we encourage parents to help children find creative ways to engage in what is happening in the service.
IN THE BACK: There are activities, books, and quiet toys for younger children. Activities and colouring sheets will coincide with the lectionary and liturgical season. Older children are invited to participate in the activities and return to pews as parents see best. IN THE PEWS: There are pew packs with activities and colouring sheets that coincide with the lectionary and liturgical season. There are also children’s bibles for school-age children available. Please return packs and bibles at the end of the service. THIS WEEK’S CRAFT: This week children will have the opportunity to make two doves out of maps (one to be added to the Advent display and the other to take home). The maps are to represent the reference to Isaiah in the Gospel reading “Prepare the way.” Maps help us to prepare when we go on a trip. Parents are encouraged to explain to their children how St. John the Baptist was a messenger preparing people for Jesus. Advent is a time of preparation. Share with your child(ren) ways to prepare for the coming of Jesus. Often the second week of Advent is connected with PEACE. The dove represents this peace. Peace is one of God's gifts to us. John the Baptist was a prophet calling the people of Israel to repent, to find peace with God. John also declared that it is in our actions of love and justice that God's peace is shown. Parents, discuss with your child(ren) how your lives can represent God’s peace today. Please let Jenny know of your needs and wishes for faith education for your children so that you all may grow together in faith. Thank you so much! Jenny Scott, Youth Worker CANONICAL PROCESS FOR ST. JAMES’ Following Nov. 9 announcement of Fr. Mark's leaving St. James’ and his explanation of Canonical Committee formation at our Nov. 16 Vestry meeting, follow-up discussions were held with Diocese of New Westminster Executive Archdeacon (and former St. James’ priest) Fr. Douglas Fenton, regarding the St. James’ "Canonical Process" for finding a new Rector.

We now understand that an experienced "Interim" Priest-in-Charge will be appointed to commence service with us ASAP after January 31, 2015. That person will work with us for 12-18 months during which time some parish review activities will take place prior to completion of a new St. James’ Parish Profile for posting of the Rector position, hopefully, early in 2016. We are pleased that Fr. Douglas (Fenton) has agreed to come to our next Parish Council meeting on Saturday, January 24, 2015 to speak with all of us about the interim priest's role, our canonical committee and process. He also has offered the St. Paul's Seattle Parish Profile (parish from which our new Bishop Melissa came to us) as a possible model to serve as a resource for us as we begin to think about updating our St. James’ Profile. A copy is available through our St James office. For more information feel free to contact any of the wardens. Brian Rocksborough-Smith, Rector's Warden PERSONAL NEWS FROM FATHER MARK The following announcement was shared at the end of the Liturgy on November 9: “Many of you know that I am in my ninth year as Rector at St. James’. Ruth and I have decided that now is the time to take the opportunity to move to the UK so that we can be closer to our family, and for new educational opportunities for Ruth. So with mixed emotions I need to explain that my family and I will be leaving St. James’ in January. Our last Sunday will be on January 11th. I have been offered a position in a parish in the Church in Wales. The specifics of my new appointment will be shared once I have updated police clearances in Canada and the UK. I realize that this news will be a surprise for many of you. I love St. James’ and it has been a tremendous privilege to serve as your Rector.
26 | THE THURIBLE
It is essential that a transparent and smooth transition is planned from one Rector to another. I am committed to this with the Wardens, Trustees and Clergy.” (Our Executive Archdeacon, Fr. Douglas Fenton, then spoke about the transition process which included his commitment, and that of Bishop Melissa, to support St. James’ as it looks forward to calling a new rector.)
THE DIOCESAN SCHOOL FOR PARISH DEVELOPMENT St James' is looking to form a team of interested parishioners to attend the School of Parish Development (formally the Diocesan School for Leadership). It is a two-year course that will equip the church to: - Look at their current reality: Who are we? Where are we? - Discern the future: What is God calling us to be in this time and place? - Work on plans to get to the future: How do we get there? There are two formats the course takes; either four weekends a year, or one week every summer. The team, once formed will discern which option is preferred. There is some financial assistance available. If you are interested in attending or helping to sponsor someone to attend please contact Jenny Scott. The registration deadline is December 15. Currently three people are committed to participating. See more at: http://tinyurl.com/ k8knt9d
ADVENT ADVENT FOOD COLLECTION DRIVE FOR YOUNG WOLVES LODGE The Mothers’ Union invites each of you to join in collecting staple foods for young Aboriginal women (former residents of Young Wolves Lodge) and their children who struggle financially, especially at Christmas and during the bleak weeks of January when food for themselves and their children is in short supply. It’s easy to make your donation! Pick up one of the specially prepared bags from the Narthex. It contains a list of suggested items to donate. Purchase some of these, or other non-perishable items, and put them into the bag. The bag also contains a Christmas card for you to write a greeting and some encouraging words to these young women in recovery. Return the bags containing your donations, and your Christmas greeting, to the box in the Narthex by December 16. The food will be taken to Young Wolves Lodge on December 17, where the residents will make up the hampers. Please show these young women and their children that the people of St. James’ care about them! Your food donations, and your Christmas messages, will mean so much! (To learn more about the women who go through the program at Young Wolves Lodge, please read our latest newsletter, contained in the bag, and visit our website: www.cominghomesociety.com) Thank you in advance for your generosity! We will need several dedications to cover the cost of the Christmas flower arrangements and we hope that many of you are thinking of doing so. If you plan on making a dedication it is not possible to indicate which area you wish them to be placed. Just indicate on the flower chart that you wish to donate flowers for Christmas and inform the office by December 15, 9:00 AM, at the latest, in order to have your dedication printed in the Christmas bulletins. We are also looking for greenery from those of you who have cedar, holly or other evergreens in your garden. Please inform the office or myself if you are able to supply any of these and deliver them to the flower room by Monday, December 22. Many thanks. Celia Dodds, Flower Guild President

QUOTE OF THIS WEEK Just as in each of our lives we always need to begin again, to get up again, to rediscover the meaning of the goal of our lives, so also for the great human family it is always necessary to rediscover the common horizon toward which we are journeying. The horizon of hope! This is the horizon that makes for a good journey. The season of Advent, which we begin again today, restores this horizon of hope, a hope which does not disappoint for it is founded on God’s Word. A hope which does not disappoint, simply because the Lord never disappoints! He is faithful! He does not disappoint! Let us think about and feel this beauty. Once again this year, Mothers’ Union will be joining with other organizations in the White Ribbon Campaign to draw attention to this issue. White ribbons are available from members of the Mothers’ Union. Please wear them for the next 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, which culminates with International Human Rights Day on December 10. Wearing a white ribbon shows that you will not participate in, or condone, violence against women. FORMATION ON SUNDAY FORMATION ON SUNDAYS The Formation on Sunday committee has decided to suspend our series for the present. We have had in the past four years a variety of outstanding programs and lectures. We thank all those who spoke to us, and all those many parishioners who participated in the planning of sessions and in the excellent discussions that followed. We will reevaluate how best to continue the formation series when our next Rector joins us. Meanwhile, we have agreed to sponsor dramatic readings of religious plays for Lent and for All Souls’. Paul Stanwood and Leslie Arnovick Nota bene: These sessions began with a Lenten series on “Doctrines of the Church”, and a new printing has just been made available in the various Church tract racks.
DIDO’S DID YOU KNOW? The four Sundays in Advent are to the great Feast of Christmas as the vigils or eves are to every saint's day, and Lent to the Feast of Easter, a solemn time of preparation to the blessed birth of our Saviour, which Christians have been used to call his Advent, or coming to us in the flesh. It is the peculiar computation of the Church to begin her year and to renew the annual course of her Holy and Divine Service at this Advent, herein differing from all other accounts and revolutions of time whatsoever. And it is to let the world know, that she neither numbereth her days, nor measureth her seasons so much by the motion of the sun, as by the course of her Saviour, beginning and continuing on the year with Him, who being the true Son of Righteousness, began now to rise upon the World, and as the Day-star from on high, to enlighten them that sat in spiritual darkness. COMMEMORATION The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary December 8
Today we commemorate the [Immaculate] Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a feast which has its origins in a legend from the second century. The story goes like this: In Israel there lived a husband and wife named Jo′-achim and Anne; they were righteous and kept all the commandments of God, but they had not been able to have any children. Their neighbours reproached them for their childlessness and even refused to let Jo’-achim present his sacrifices in the Temple, saying, “It is not fitting for you to offer your gifts first, because you have begotten no offspring in Israel.” Jo′-a-chim admitted the justice of this reproach and in his grief departed into the wilderness to fast for forty days and forty nights. Meanwhile his wife Anne remained at home and carried her own grief in her heart. One afternoon she went into her garden and sat down beneath a laurel tree. She looked up and, seeing a nest of sparrows, uttered this lament: “Woe is me; to what may I be likened? I am not like the birds of heaven, for even the birds of heaven are fruitful before you, O Lord. Nor may I be likened to this earth, for even this earth brings forth its fruit in due season and praises you, O Lord.” Immediately an angel visited her with this message: “Anne, Anne, the Lord has heard your prayer, and you shall conceive and bear a child, and your offspring shall be spoken of in all the world.” True to God’s word, she conceived and gave birth to Mary — who did indeed come to be spoken of in all the world as the Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. COMMEMORATION Prophets of the Old Testament December 9
Today we remember the prophets of the Old Testament and number them among the true saints and witnesses of Christ — not because some of their sayings may be construed as foretelling his birth, but because they recalled Israel and Judah to God’s covenant and uttered the word of God’s justice, so that the people might return and seek redemption from the Lord. Prophecy took many forms in ancient Israel and was specially associated with “speaking in tongues,” or the gift of ecstatic speech which could often sound like nothing more than musical babbling but was in fact uttering praise to God in the power of the Spirit. The first two kings of Israel, Saul and David, manifested this form of prophecy. But so did the prophets of the gods of the heathen — and, as a result, Israel began to look for more in the prophets of the one true God. They sought qualities like faithfulness to the inner meaning of God’s covenant with Moses and the ability to relate Israel’s contemporary experience of defeat and exile to the great Passover out of Egypt into the Promised Land. These were precisely the qualities found in the writings of the prophets which are included in the canon of the Old Testament; and we honour them during this season of Advent, because they show us how to expect the coming of Christ — in justice, in mercy, and as the fulfilment of the great Passover of all creation, when we shall finally return from our exile and enter the true promised land, which is the glory of God and the kingdom of Christ.
