The image on the front cover shows two of the seven Altar lamps, silver containers, each cradling a copper vessel which holds enough oil to burn for six weeks. Each container is engraved in memory of a particular parish member from the early years of the 20th century. These sanctuary lamps, which date from the old church, represent the seven lamps of fire burning before the throne of God as mentioned in the Book of Revelation. from Allan Duncan’s Tour of St. James’ 2 | HIGH MASS
Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection – The Advent Prose Pour down, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness. Turn your fierce anger form us, O Lord, and remember not our sins for ever. Your holy cities have become a desert, Zion a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation; our holy and beautiful house, where our fathers+ praised you. Pour down, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness. We have sinned and become like one who is unclean; we have all withered like a leaf, and our iniquities like the wind have swept us away. You have hidden your face from us, and abandoned us to our iniquities. Pour down, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness. You are my witnesses, says the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know me and believe me. I myself am the Lord, and none but I can deliver; what my hand holds, none can snatch away. Pour down, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness. Comfort my people, comfort them; my salvation shall not be delayed. I have swept your offences away like a cloud; fear not, for I will save you. I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your redeemer. Pour down, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness. 4 | HIGH MASS

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, who sent thy servant John the Baptist to prepare thy people to welcome the Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of thy truth, to turn our disobedient hearts to thee, that when the Christ shall come again to be our judge, we may stand with confidence before his glory; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A reading from the Book of Isaiah A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of God in order that he might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, "Therefore I will confess you among the Gentiles, and sing praises to your name"; and again he says, "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people"; and again, "Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him"; and again Isaiah says, "The root of Jesse shall come, the one who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles shall hope." May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:4-13

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'" Now John wore clothing of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Matthew 3:1-12

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES “God’s hand in the world / Like my mother’s hand in the innards / Of a slaughter chicken / On Sabbath eve.” Yehuda Amichai (1924-2000) in his opening sentence offers the reader a striking image of providence. A friend introduced me to the writings of this Israeli poet during a tour of the Holy Land for seminarians. I was coming to terms with my experience having lived in Jerusalem a few years previously. In the poem “Wild Peace” Amichai draws on imagery from passages in the prophet Isaiah which happen to be our Sunday lections this week and last: “Not the one of an armistice, / Not even the one of the vision of wolf and lamb,” (Isaiah 11:1-10) ; “Peace / Without the commotion of turning swords into plowshares, without words / without” (Isaiah 2:1-5). It concludes: “Let it be / Like wild flowers, / Suddenly, an imperative of the field: / Wild peace.” When living in Israel-Palestine life is lived in the imperative. In the midst of turmoil even the hope of peace can seem fleeting, often beyond reach. So it is for many of us in the midst of personal struggles, or the strivings of our
peoples and nations. Pope Francis, is his Advent Sunday homily, seized and proclaimed his conviction for hope in peace based on Isaiah 2: “What a lovely day it will be when weapons are damaged to be transformed into tools for work! Exactly what a gorgeous day that will be! And this is possible! Let us bet on hope, on the hope of peace, and it will be possible!”

LITURGY AT CHRISTMAS
ADVENT MESSAGE FROM THE FLOWER GUILD St. James’ is now in a season of penitential purple and no flowers. Advent is the time of preparation for Christmas, of making ourselves more worthy of the great gift that God is preparing for us. Concentrating as we are on our own unworthiness (perhaps even guilt), giving thanks tends to become less important, and flowers are all about giving thanks. But wait! Advent will end and God’s great gift to us will be born to Mary in the stable in Bethlehem. Then our gratitude can pour forth in flowers. The Flower Guild receives no money from Church funds, but depends entirely on free-will offerings from you – the congregation. We count on you to help us show the gratitude of St. James’ to God for the greatest gift of all – his own son.

“Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness.” (Isa. 45:8) These are the opening words and refrain to the advent text known as The Advent Prose. It is said, or sung, at Mass and the Divine Offices during the season of Advent. It gives poetical expression to the longings of Patriarchs and Prophets, and symbolically of the Church, for the coming of the Messiah. So this poem may also be used for private prayer and reflection during Advent. Why not give it a try? The St. James’ High Mass Choir sung this text at the Advent Lessons and Carols on Sunday last. And it is recited most days during public Morning and Evening Prayer in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The text can be found in the New English Hymnal (501) and in the St. James’ liturgy booklets for Morning and Evening Prayer, which you are welcome to take for your own use. On page four of the today’s Sunday Bulletin this exquisite poem is also available. The Advent Prose is also known as Rorate coeli the opening phrase in the Latin Vulgate translation of Isaiah 45:8.

SAINTS THIS WEEK St. Lucy Martyr at Syracuse, 304 December 13 Lucy, or Lucia, was martyred at Syracuse, in Sicily, during Diocletian’s reign of terror of 303-304, among the most dramatic of the persecutions of early Christians. Her tomb can still be found in the catacombs at Syracuse. She was venerated soon after her death and her cult spread quickly throughout the church. She is among the saints and martyrs named in the Roman Canon of the Mass. Most of the details of Lucy’s life are obscure. In the tradition she is remembered for the purity of her life and the gentleness of her spirit. Because her name means “light,” she is sometimes thought of as the patron saint of those who suffer from diseases of the eyes. Holy Woman, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints, Church Publishing, 2010.

SAINTS THIS WEEK St. John of the Cross Mystic, Teacher of the Faith, 1591 December 14 John of the Cross was unknown outside the Discalced Carmelites for nearly three hundred years after his death. More recently, scholars of Christian spirituality have found in him a hidden treasure. Once described by Thomas Merton as “the church’s safest mystical theologian,” John has been called “the poet’s poet,” “spirit of flame,” “celestial and divine.” By the age of thirty-five he had studied extensively, had been spiritual director to many, and yet devoted himself to the search for God so fully that he reached the peak of the mystical experience: a complete transformation in God. John became disillusioned with what he considered the laxity of the Carmelites, and in 1568 he opened a monastery of “Discalced” (strict observance) Carmelites, an act that met with sharp resistance from the General Chapter of the Calced Carmelites. John was seized, taken to Toledo, and imprisoned in the monastery. During nine months of great hardship, he comforted himself by writing poetry. It was while he was imprisoned that he composed the greater part of his luminous masterpiece, The Spiritual Canticle, as well as a number of shorter poems. Other major works are The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Living Flame of Love and The Dark Night. It is this latter work, Noche obscura del alma, that gave the English language the phrase dark night of the soul. After a severe illness, John died on December 14, 1591, in Ubeda, in southern Spain.
