The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. A Reflection The Christian Fathers delighted to speak of three comings of Christ. At his first coming he was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger, at his last he will be clothed in light as in a garment; at his first coming he endured the cross, despising the shame, at his last he will be exalted in majesty. In between these two there is a secret coming in the lives of all who will receive him. His first advent was in the flesh and in weakness; his secret advent now is in spirit and in power; his final advent will be in the open glory of God. The three comings are linked. In the twelfth century the Cistercian abbot Guerric of Igny expressed the connections like this in an Advent sermon: As our bodies will rise up rejoicing at his final coming, so our hearts must run joyfully to greet his first…between these two comings of his, the Lord often visits each one of us in accordance with our merits and desires, forming us to the likeness of his first coming in the flesh, and preparing us for his return at the end of time. He comes to us now to make sure that his first coming should not have been wasted, and that his last coming may not have to be in anger. His purpose now is to convert our pride into the humility he showed when he first came, so that hereafter he may refashion our lowly bodies into the likeness of that glorious body which he will manifest when he comes again… Grace accompanied his first coming, glory will surround his last, this intermediate coming has in it something of both, since by it we experience in the consolations of his grace a foretaste of his glory. “The Final Coming” The Coming of God, Dame Maria Boulding, OSB © SPCK 1982, p: 145 Selected for the 2017 Advent Program of the RC Diocese of Arundel & Brighton, UK.

HYMN 12 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — On Jordan’s Bank, the Baptist’s Cry On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry announces that the Lord is nigh; come then and hearken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings.

Then cleansed be every Christian breast, and furnished for so great a guest! Yea, let us each our hearts prepare for Christ to come and enter there. For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge and our great reward; without thy grace our souls must fade and wither like a flower decayed. Stretch forth thine hand to heal our sore, and make us rise, to fall no more; once more upon thy people shine and fill the world with love divine. All praise, eternal Son, to thee, whose advent sets thy people free; whom with the Father we adore and Spirit blest, for evermore. Amen.

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, who sent thy servant John the Baptist to prepare thy people to welcome the Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of thy truth, to turn our disobedient hearts to thee, that when the Christ shall come again to be our judge, we may stand with confidence before his glory; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Book of Isaiah. A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder's den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious. Isaiah 11:1-10

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.

Give the King your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the King's Son; That he may rule your people righteously and the poor with justice; That the mountains may bring prosperity to the people, and the little hills bring righteousness. Antiphon 8 | SOLEMN MASS

He shall defend the needy among the people; he shall rescue the poor and crush the oppressor. He shall live as long as the sun and moon endure, from one generation to another. He shall come down like rain upon the mown field, like showers that water the earth. Antiphon In his time shall the righteous flourish; there shall be abundance of peace till the moon shall be no more. Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous deeds! And blessed be his glorious name for ever! and may all the earth be filled with his glory. Amen. Amen. Antiphon Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19

SECOND READING Reader

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of God in order that he might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, "Therefore I will confess you among the Gentiles, and sing praises to your name"; and again he says, "Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people"; and again, "Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him"; and again Isaiah says, "The root of Jesse shall come, the one who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him the Gentiles shall hope." May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:4-13

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'" Now John wore clothing of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Matthew 3:1-12

Midnight’s peace their cry has broken, their urgent summons clearly spoken: "The time has come, O maidens wise! Rise up, and give us light; the Bridegroom is in sight. Alleluia! Your lamps prepare and hasten there, that you the wedding feast may share." Zion hears the watchmen singing. Her heart with joyful hope is springing; she wakes and hurries through the night. Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. HYMN 106 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — There’s a Voice in the Wilderness There’s a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod: prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God! The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low; make straight all the crooked places, where the Lord our God may go! O Zion, give voice to good tidings, ascend to the heights and sing! Proclaim to a desolate people the coming of their King. The works of pride all perish, like flowers they shall decay; the power and pomp of nations shall pass like a dream away. But your word, O God, is faithful, your arm, O Lord, is strong; you stand in the midst of nations, and you will right the wrong. You will feed your flock like a shepherd, and fold the lambs to your breast; in pastures of peace you’ll lead them, and give to the weary rest. The Thurible CLERGY NOTES On Friday CBC Vancouver held its 33rd annual Open House and Food Bank Day. (At the time of writing over $333,000 had been raised.) Listening to Early Edition, as I usually do, I was struck by two things: the joy and celebration presenters and performers, auction donors and audience had in the act of giving (one man came into the studio with a gift of $1,000 in thanksgiving for welcome and assistance he had received when he arrived in Canada over 25 years ago); then the scandal that in one of the wealthiest cities and regions in the world, 100 Food Banks across the Province are necessary to support families and individuals in need. Friday was also the Feast of St Nicholas of Myra, a fourthcentury bishop renowned for his acts of charity and generosity, alongside his support and protection of the needy and vulnerable. He is commonly understood to be the inspiration for the legendary Santa Claus. (Visit stnicholascenter.org to learn more about St Nicholas and the influence of his story.)

As we look for the Advent, the coming amongst us, of Jesus in the here and now, St Nicholas reminds us that we shall find him particularly in the poor and those in need. I’m glad that earlier this year Mother Lucy and her Formation group gave an evening to assist at the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, and encouraged us all to contribute to a food collection in the summer. I hope we may do so again. Let us pray for grace, like St Nicholas, to speak out for justice, and to rejoice in being generous: ‘remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”’ (Acts 20.35)

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

“PURSE” FOR MOTHER LUCY As many of you know, the people of St. James’ have always blessed their departing clergy with a “purse,” or collection of money to thank them for all they have done for us, and to assist them with transitioning to the next phase of their lives. To contribute to the purse, you can add some money or a cheque (with Clergy Discretionary Fund in the memo) to your Sunday offering envelope. Write clearly on the envelope the amount you are designating for the purse. You can also drop cash or a cheque off to the church office. Please make your contributions by Sun. Dec. 22 so that there is time to record and compile them before Mother Lucy's last Sunday, which is Dec. 29. HOT SOX Please donate part-woollen work socks, or funds to purchase them, for the Mission to Seafarers There will be a box for them in the narthex. The Women’s Guild will be wrapping them on Wed. Dec. 11 at 10 am in the Parish Centre. FLOWER DEDICATIONS FOR CHRISTMAS Christmas is rapidly approaching, and it is time to think about flower dedications for Christmas. Flowers are exceptionally expensive particularly at this time of year, and we spend $400 to $500 on the Christmas display. We depend on parishioners’ generosity to make the church as beautiful as possible, so the Flower Guild are asking you to consider whether you would like to dedicate flowers to a loved one or for personal gratitude for blessings received. If you would like to dedicate flowers this Christmas, we ask you to notify the office before the week of Dec 8 - 15 in order to get your dedication into the service booklet. You cannot specify a particular altar but just say “Christmas Flowers.” Many thanks, Celia Dodds (Flower Guild President)

RELATIONSHIPS & FELLOWSHIPS 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS The Worldwide Mothers’ Union supports the 16 Days of Activism -- Mon. Nov. 25 to Tue. Dec. 10. This is also known as the White Ribbon Campaign. Encouraging people to talk about gender-based violence is critical in breaking the silence and stigma that victims can often face and removing myths that can keep people silent. Creating a safe and non-judgmental environment may encourage those experiencing gender-based violence to speak out. It is therefore important to be aware of how to respond and support those who disclose such experiences.

Here are some general principles to consider: •Violence and abuse is always wrong and never acceptable. •The responsibility for the abuse lies with the perpetrator. •Ultimately, only the person experiencing abuse can decide what course of action to take. We invite all parishioners to wear the white ribbon if you are a woman and the moose hide square if you are a man and take this pledge: I pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls. MOTHERS’ UNION CHRISTMAS FOOD & CLOTHING DRIVE The Mothers Union and the Coming Home Society are sponsoring a Food and Clothing Drive for two organizations this Christmas – The Aboriginal Front Door and Warriors Against Violence. The Drive extends until Dec. 29. Please bring your items in a bag or box and leave them in the Baptistry. The Aboriginal Front Door is a street-front drop-in, assisted by the friends and family of Kelvin Bee. At this time of year warm clothing is in high demand – parkas, gloves, mittens, toques, scarves and warm socks. As well, non-perishable food items such as canned soup, canned stew, beans, instant coffee, Ryvita, pancake mix and so on, would be most welcome. The Warriors Against Violence Society is a unique program that works with Aboriginal families and individuals to help them overcome domestic anger and abuse – one of the legacies of the Residential School system. January is a lean month, and Warriors Against Violence really appreciate having non-perishable food donations to pass on to the families who attend their workshops and healing circles.
