A Reflection VENI COME, LORD JESUS! Lord, we have looked for thee more than watchmen wait for the morning. Come forth, O Sun, from the eastern chambers: though the night be long and dark, let the day spring from on high. Rise, O thou Sun of righteousness with healing in thy wings. Rise, scatter our mean prides and wrong loves, the waste of our wraths, the gloom of our doubts and failures, and all the tyrannies of sin. Come, Lord Jesus, arise and shine! Let the whole world wake and kneel before the reliance of thy cradle; kneel and wonder before the bright shining of thy Cross; wonder and exult in shattering of thy tomb. O thou Sun that riseth and never goeth down, shine in our heart to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the brightness of thy face; and to change us into the same image from glory to glory. Come, Lord Jesus, come!

HYMN 12 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — On Jordan’s Bank, the Baptist’s Cry On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry announces that the Lord is nigh; come then and hearken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings. Then cleansed be every Christian breast, and furnished for so great a guest! Yea, let us each our hearts prepare for Christ to come and enter there. For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge and our great reward; without thy grace our souls must fade and wither like a flower decayed. Stretch forth thine hand to heal our sore, and make us rise, to fall no more; once more upon thy people shine and fill the world with love divine. All praise, eternal Son, to thee, whose advent sets thy people free; whom with the Father we adore and Spirit blest, for evermore. Amen.

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, who sent thy servant John the Baptist to prepare thy people to welcome the Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of thy truth, to turn our disobedient hearts to thee, that when the Christ shall come again to be our judge, we may stand with confidence before his glory; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Baruch. Take off the garment of your sorrow and affliction, O Jerusalem, and put on forever the beauty of the glory from God. Put on the robe of the righteousness that comes from God; put on your head the diadem of the glory of the Everlasting; for God will show your splendour everywhere under heaven. For God will give you evermore the name, ‘Righteous Peace, Godly Glory.’ Arise, O Jerusalem, stand upon the height; look toward the east, and see your children gathered from west and east at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that God has remembered them. For they went out from you on foot, led away by their enemies; but God will bring them back to you, carried in glory, as on a royal throne. For God has ordered that every high mountain and the everlasting hills be made low and the valleys filled up, to make level ground, so that Israel may walk safely in the glory of God. The woods and every fragrant tree have shaded Israel at God's command. For God will lead Israel with joy, in the light of his glory, with the mercy and righteousness that come from him. Baruch 5:1-9

CANTICLE

The choir sings the Benedictus Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he hath visited and redeemed his people; And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us in the house of his servant David, As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

8 | HIGH MASS

To perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham, that he would give us, That we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people for the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us; To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Luke 1:68-79 / Setting: Benedictus in C — C. V. Stanford

EPISTLE READING Reader

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians. I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; -and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

MOTET The Lord at first did Adam make out of the dust and clay, And in his nostrils breathed life, e'en as the Scriptures say. And then in Eden's Paradise He placed him to dwell: That he within it should remain, to dress and keep it well. Chorus: Now let good Christians all beware sin’s evil ways to shun, And to prepare all hearts for Christ, God’s own dear blessed Son. And thus within the garden he was set, therein to stay, And in commandment unto him these words the Lord did say: “The fruit which in the garden grows to thee shall be for meet, Except the tree in midst thereof, of which thou shalt not eat.” Chorus.

“For in the day thou shalt it touch, or do it then come nigh; And if that thou dost eat thereof then thou shalt surely die.” But Adam he did take no heed unto that only thing, But did transgress God's holy law, and so was wrapt in sin. Chorus. Now mark the goodness of the Lord which he to mankind bore; His mercy soon he did extend, lost man for to restore; And therefore to redeem our souls from death and hellish thrall, He said his own dear son should be the Saviour of us all. Chorus. And now the tide is nigh at hand, in which our Saviour came; Let us rejoice, and merry be, in keeping of the same. Let's feed the poor and hungry souls, and such as do it crave; And when we die, in Heaven we our reward we shall have. Chorus. The Lord at first did Adam make — English West-country tune, arr. The Thurible Notes from the Clergy For many centuries December 8 in the Calendar of the Church has been observed as the Feast of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary; in the Roman Catholic Church since 1854 it has been the Immaculate Conception. My intention in writing this is not to enter into the age-old debate about whether or not the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin; rather, to reflect on the significance of this commemoration, in the story of salvation and in our story too. The fundamental point here is that by grace God is preparing Mary from the first moment of her conception for the role in salvation he hoped she would fulfil, the bearing of God’s Son into the world. There are parallels with other biblical characters. God says to the prophet Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.” [Jeremiah 1.4] Paul writes, “God, who had set me apart before I was born and called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me.” [Galatians 1.15] We see God then preparing Jeremiah, Paul and Mary for their roles, their relationship with God. What then about us? May we see

God at work by grace in our lives, even from our very beginnings? Psalm 139 helps us here: even before we are born, there is a place, a unique place, for each of us in the mind of God. This is not to say that there is a predetermined blueprint for each of our lives, that we are programmed to make a particular response at a particular time. That is to deny the free-will which is ours, as made in God’s image. It does mean that we are never beyond the scope of God’s love and God’s understanding. We may make the wrong choice at a particular time, we all do when we sin, but God does not desert us. There is the opportunity to repent, to change, to make the right choice another time. Whenever we make a wrong choice, God is always ahead of us and will provide another opportunity in the new circumstances to choose again. This Advent find some time to read prayerfully Psalm 139. It may then be helpful to draw a life-line – to look back over your whole life, or perhaps the last few years. Draw a line on a piece of paper and mark on it significant events, things and people which have had an important influence on the

direction of life; times when you have made the wrong decision, times when you have chosen wisely. Discover the part God has had to play in all this and mark that down too. Don’t be worried – do this with confidence: God knows already, God made you and loves you as you are. Above all, as the Psalmist does, give thanks: thanks for the gift of life, for forgiveness and acceptance, for blessings and all gifts of love offered and received. Fr. Kevin THE THURIBLE | 25

OUR PARISH TODAY: ADVENT FORMATION: Walking Backwards to Christmas This book study will work with Stephen Cottrell’s brilliant book Walking Backwards to Christmas. Using the deceptively simple device of telling the Christmas story backwards Stephen Cottrell helps us encounter it as though for the first time. His approach enables us to get under the skin of a complex narrative, giving us insights into its many horrors as well as its joys. The books for this study are available for a one time suggested donation of $15.00 each. All are welcome and encouraged to participate. If you need assistance with the cost of the book, please see Mother Lucy or Fr. Kevin.

Dec. 10. Encouraging people to talk about gender-based violence is critical in breaking the silence and stigma that victims can often face and removing myths that can keep people silent. Creating a safe and non-judgmental environment may encourage those experiencing gender-based violence to speak out. It is therefore important to be aware of how to respond and support those who disclose such experiences. Here are some general principles to consider:

Violence and abuse is always wrong and never acceptable  The responsibility for the abuse lies with the perpetrator  Ultimately, only the person experiencing abuse can decide what course of action to take. We invite all female parishioners to wear the white ribbon and male parishioners to wear the moose hide square, and all to take this pledge: I pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls. DONATIONS NEEDED The Mothers’ Union is joining with the Coming Home Society to collect non-perishable food and other clothing items for two aboriginal organizations during Advent and Christmas, starting this Sunday, Dec. 9. The Aboriginal Front Door, administered by Kelvin Bee, helps people in need with food or clothing, especially during the cold winter months. The Warriors Against Violence, a community organization responding to families suffering domestic violence, is being supported by the Coming Home Society. If you can help please find a plastic bag in the Christmas Box in the Narthex, which gives a description of the two initiatives and a list of suggested items to donate. It also contains the Annual Report of the Coming Home Society. Many thanks for your generosity.
