Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection “O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May they prosper who love you. ‘Peace be within your walls and tranquillity within your palaces.’ For my kindred and companions’ sake I will pray that peace be with you.” Psalm 122.6-8
Muslim, Jewish, Christian Prayer for Peace “O God, you are the source of life and peace. Praised be your name forever. We know it is you who turn our minds to thoughts of peace. Hear our prayer in this time of war. “Your power changes hearts. Muslims, Christians, and Jews remember, and profoundly affirm, that they are followers of the one God, children of Abraham, brother and sisters. Enemies begin to speak to one another; those who were estranged join hands in friendship. Nations seek the way of peace together. “Strengthen our resolve to give witness to these truths by the way we live. Give to us: understanding that puts an end to strife; mercy that quenches hatred, and forgiveness that overcomes vengeance. Empower all people to live in your law of love.” from PaxChristi USA

HYMN 12 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — On Jordan’s Bank, the Baptist’s Cry On Jordan's bank the Baptist's cry announces that the Lord is nigh; come then and hearken, for he brings glad tidings of the King of kings. Then cleansed be every Christian breast, and furnished for so great a guest! Yea, let us each our hearts prepare for Christ to come and enter there. For thou art our salvation, Lord, our refuge and our great reward; without thy grace our souls must fade and wither like a flower decayed. Stretch forth thine hand to heal our sore, and make us rise, to fall no more; once more upon thy people shine and fill the world with love divine. All praise, eternal Son, to thee, whose advent sets thy people free; whom with the Father we adore and Spirit blest, for evermore. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Isaiah. Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." A voice says, "Cry out!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, "Here is your God!" See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Isaiah 40:1-11

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; all repeat it thereafter.
You have been gracious to your land, O Lord, you have restored the good fortune of Jacob. You have forgiven the iniquity of your people and blotted out all their sins. Antiphon 8 | HIGH MASS
I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to him. Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Antiphon Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall spring up from the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven. Antiphon The Lord will indeed grant prosperity, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness shall go before him, and peace shall be a pathway for his feet. Antiphon Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13
EPISTLE READING Reader
A reading from the Second Letter of Peter.
But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. 2 Peter 3:8-15A

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to thee, O Lord. The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'" John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." Mark 1:1-8

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY St. John the Baptist’s instruction “Prepare ye the way of the Lord!”, memorably and repetitively set to music as the opening song of the 1970s musical Godspell (reference to which immediately dates the writer of these Notes), was addressed to his hearers 2000 years ago, but speaks as powerfully to Christians and to all of good will today, in this season of Advent. “Prepare ye the way of the Lord!” Christians are invited, indeed urged, to live by and work for the values of God’s kingdom, as we pray each day, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.” These values are to love God and to love our neighbour as ourselves, to be signs of God’s passion for justice for the poor and oppressed, to be agents of forgiveness, peace and reconciliation in this so broken and divided world, to care for the gift of creation entrusted to us. We are called to model these values together as the Church of God, globally, nationally and in our neighbourhood, and also in our individual lives as we seek by grace to become more Christ-like.
Here at St. James’ the Street Outreach Initiative, our association with Salal & Cedar and the MetroVancouver Alliance, the Coming Home Society and the Outreach Committee are all expressions of these kingdom values, alongside our daily offering of worship and prayer. Advent is an opportunity too for each of us to hold up the mirror of God’s Spirit to ourselves, reflecting on how in our own lives we express these values, on how you, how I, may be more gracefilled, more Christ-like signs of the kingdom.
Inform. Inspire. Invite.

Mother Lucy FORMATION – THE SONGS OF ADVENT Thursdays Dec. 14 & 21 at 6-8 pm in the Boardroom Sundays Dec. 10 & 17 at 12:30-2:00 pm in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel Jump into Advent with scripture and song! As familiar as we are with the songs of Christmas, there are four songs recorded in the Bible to celebrate the birth of Jesus that most of us aren’t familiar with. The angels sang a song to the shepherds. Mary sang a song to God after she had time to get over the shocking news that she was going to be the mother of the Savior. Simeon also had a song. Then there’s Zechariah’s song. Zechariah was an elderly priest who sang after being visited by an angel. This wasn’t like a Broadway musical—these people didn’t suddenly burst into song. But the ancient church captured their words and created songs known as canticles. For the Thursday evening slot, register with Mother Lucy as space is limited: lucy@stjames.bc.ca or let the office know if you are coming to the Sunday sessions so we know how many booklets and sandwiches we will need: office@stjames.bc.ca | 604-685-2532

Along with our partners at St. John Shaughnessy we offer the community an all fun, all ages, all bodies, no memorization pageant in which everyone who wants to be is part of the story. We need performers and volunteers and audience to make this happen: 10-noon rehearsal, lunch for participants, 1 pm petting zoo opens, 2 pm pageant. Come and be a part of one of the funniest things we do all year. Contact us at salalandcedar@vancouver.anglican.ca to let us know you're coming. Later in the day join Earthkeepers at their Carols for the Climate fundraiser.
This year, instead of putting your donations into bags, there will be decorated boxes under our very first St. James' Christmas tree, at the back of the church. Please bring any nourishing, nonperishable food donation you can contribute, and put it into one of the boxes. We will be collecting right up until the last Sunday in Advent, and the donations will be put together and distributed to needy youth in the week after Christmas. The new Coming Home Society newsletters are available in the Narthex this morning. Please take one and read about the Aboriginal youth that you are supporting with your prayers, your presence, and your financial and food donations. You are making such a difference in their lives!
