It begins with "Gaudete" which is where the name for this "Gaudete Sunday" comes from. The full text of the antiphon for the Introit in English is found on p. 6. This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Discarded copies will be recycled. 2 | HIGH MASS
Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection John the Baptist Growing from old age he was close to death, When he was born carried the look of death. The mouth sharp as a sword forbade the touch Of softness. In the desert he found sand And friendly thistles for his hardened hands. He was a god a short time, camped within A wilderness and found his childhood there, Built sand castles, was tempted first to sin But pleasure was repellent. With long hair He frightened and baptised throughout Judea. Ironic for him that was percursor Of one who turned the water into wine And multiplied the loaves, one who was wiser In knowing peace. The tawny lion John Hated the path that he had trodden on. He had been careless of the power of women But a voluptuous feast was his own death The head upon a plate, the sword-sharp mouth Condemning dancing with a sad inhuman Face that shook above Salome’s hips. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Isaiah. The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion - to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. For I the Lord love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, then were we like those who dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy. Then they said among the nations, "The Lord has done great things for them." Antiphon The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad indeed. Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the watercourses of the Negev. Antiphon Psalm 126:1-5
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil. May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, "I am not the Messiah." And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No." Then they said to him, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,'" as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, "Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal." This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing. Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES Transition, change and transformation are the natural state of the Church and every Christian. We are a pilgrim people. Our stability and rootedness can only derive from the strength of our relationship with Jesus Christ – not through the illusion of external stability. Grace triumphs our aversion to change and risk. The origin of the word “parish” is fascinating. The word comes from the Greek “παροικία” through the Latin “parochia”. “In Hellenistic Greek παροικία denoted originally ‘sojourn in a foreign land’, a ‘community of sojourners.’” So the etymology of the term “parish” is rooted in the sense of being a pilgrim people. In the words of the King James Version, 1 Peter 2.11, we are “strangers and pilgrims” here on earth. The parish is a “gathering” (the literal meaning for the Greek for “church” - ἐκκλησία) of pilgrim people. Here we are confronted with a paradox. Parishes are defined, to varying degrees, by a geographical boundary. A parish is a circumscribed region with a building(s) for worship. As Christians we are making our way through life as strangers and pilgrims who are rooted in a
geographical region (parish) and building (parish church). At best this is a life-giving and lifetransforming paradox. We live as strangers and pilgrims who gather for worship and are dismissed in order to serve within and among a specific place and community. Throughout the universal Church each diocese and parish may have its own distinct character and personality, as it were, whilst we are united though Scripture, the historic creeds of the Church and the orders of Bishop, Priest and Deacon. Our family – the Anglican Communion – within the universal Church has identified Five Marks of Mission in which we can all share. Especially with Anglicans, but not exclusively, we may recognize that we are strangers and pilgrims who through our parishes are living the mission of Christ: St. James’ is experiencing a time of leadership transition. This presents us with an opportunity to become what we are: a community of sojourners worshipping and serving Jesus Christ.

MISSING PROJECTOR The Saint James’ Music Academy has been missing a white BenQ projector since its concert on the evening of December 5th. If you have any information, please contact the church office at 604-685-2532. “PURSE” FOR FR. MARK As many of you know, the people of St. James’ have always blessed their departing clergy with a “purse,” or collection of money to thank them for all they have done for us, and to assist them with transitioning to the next phase of their lives. To contribute to this “purse,” you can add some money or a cheque to your Sunday offering envelope. Write clearly on the envelope the amount you are designating for the “purse.” You can also drop cash or a cheque off to the church office. Please make your contributions by Sunday, January 4th, so that there is time for the Envelope Secretary to record and compile them before Fr. Mark’s last Sunday, which is January 11th. UPDATE ON LEASE NEGOTIATIONS Dear Friends, I'd like to update you on the progress of our talks with the Saint James’ Music Academy (SJMA) about the possibility of their leasing Clinton Hall. Let me also tell you about the process of securing a lease. There are a number of consultative steps involved in following the diocese's rules for leasing parish property. We have a long way to go before we work out a final agreement with the music academy. Your input as parishioners is crucial to this process. 1. Our negotiations are just beginning. Acting as a subcommittee of the church Board of Trustees, and on their authority, the Oversight Committee spoke with SJMA representatives. We offered SJMA a rent based on a price-per-square foot recommended by our commercial real estate consultant. We have informed the SJMA that, unfortunately, we cannot offer them either storage or class-room space in the crypt as we need that space for our own programs and storage. They understand. We have also asked them to specify the start date of a lease. Currently the SJMA is discussing a summer start date.
2. After the SJMA and the Board of Trustees agree on a fair and acceptable rent, we will bring the full agreement we've negotiated to the parish for discussion. A Special Vestry Meeting will be called so that everyone can learn about potential specifications of the lease and voice any concerns they may have. 3. After vestry approval the lease agreement will be sent to the law firm of the diocesan council, George Cadman. George has offered to review the agreement and turn it into a formal, legal document, i.e. a lease. 4. Next the draft lease will go before the Diocesan Council, as required by the diocese. Council will review the lease in order to make sure that the parish and the church is protected legally. They will pass along any suggestions, and we will go from there. After the lease is approved, it can be signed by both parties. Let me end by reassuring you of our awareness that renting out the hall represents a major sacrifice to the parish. Hopefully we can secure a lease that provides a reliable source of income for the parish at the same time it is sensitive to our own needs (and those of our partners, the Music Academy). With warm regards, Leslie Arnovick, Chair—Oversight Committee MOTHER ALEXIS ON LEAVE Mother Alexis is on leave for the month of December, so will not be responding to emails or phone calls during this time. BAPTISM DATES IN 2015 The sacrament of Holy Baptism will be offered on the following dates in 2015: Sunday, January 11 (Baptism of the Lord) Saturday night, April 4 (Easter Vigil) Sunday, May 24 (Feast of Pentecost) Sunday, November 1 (All Saints’ Day) We hope that we will have many candidates for baptism in the coming year! Please call the Church Office or speak to one of the clergy at least 3 weeks in
advance of the date you select. This gives us time to arrange a baptismal preparation session for you if you are not familiar with the sacrament as offered at St. James’. We also need to ensure that the Rite of Holy Baptism is in the High Mass booklet for the Sunday you have selected. Please see one of the clergy if you would like more information about the sacrament of Holy Baptism. KID’S CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. DURING MASS: It is such a privilege and blessing to be able to worship alongside such a diverse group at St. James' and this especially includes worshipping with all the children. Whether children are in the back or sitting in the pews, we encourage parents to help children find creative ways to engage in what is happening in the service. IN THE BACK: There are activities, books, and quiet toys for younger children. Activities and colouring sheets will coincide with the lectionary and liturgical season. Older children are invited to participate in the activities and return to pews as parents see best. IN THE PEWS: There are pew packs with activities and colouring sheets that coincide with the lectionary and liturgical season. There are also children’s bibles for school-age children available. Please return packs and bibles at the end of the service. THIS WEEK'S CRAFT: This week we will make Christmas cards for members of the parish who are home communicants or may be too ill to participate in the worships services this Advent season. We will also make “joy” decorations to add to the Advent display. Today, the start of the third week of Advent, we again hear about John the Baptist as he prepares the way for the coming of the Lord. He tells the crowd that he is not the light but that he is directing people toward the light. Just as a mirror reflects the sun’s light, John

When we reflect the light of Christ we find ourselves filled with Joy. Even in the midst of waiting for Christ to come again we can be filled with this joy and share it with others. Even a simple act of sending cards to others can be a way of sharing the light of Christ and the joy it brings.
THE DIOCESAN SCHOOL FOR PARISH DEVELOPMENT St James' is looking to form a team of interested parishioners to attend the School of Parish Development (formally the Diocesan School for Leadership). It is a two-year course that will equip the church to: - Look at their current reality: Who are we? Where are we? - Discern the future: What is God calling us to be in this time and place? - Work on plans to get to the future: How do we get there?
Please let Jenny know of your needs and wishes for faith education for your children so that you all may grow together in faith. Thank you so much! Jenny Scott, Youth Worker CANONICAL PROCESS FOR ST. JAMES’ Following Nov. 9 announcement of Fr. Mark's leaving St. James’ and his explanation of Canonical Committee formation at our Nov. 16 Vestry meeting, follow-up discussions were held with Diocese of New Westminster Executive Archdeacon (and former St. James’ priest) Fr. Douglas Fenton, regarding the St. James’ "Canonical Process" for finding a new Rector. We now understand that an experienced "Interim" Priest-in-Charge will be appointed to commence service with us ASAP after January 31, 2015. That person will work with us for 12-18 months during which time some parish review activities will take place prior to completion of a new St. James’ Parish Profile for posting of the Rector position, hopefully, early in 2016. We are pleased that Fr. Douglas (Fenton) has agreed to come to our next Parish Council meeting on Saturday, January 24, 2015 to speak with all of us about the interim priest's role, our canonical committee and process. He also has offered the St. Paul's Seattle Parish Profile (parish from which our new Bishop Melissa came to us) as a possible model to serve as a resource for us as we begin to think about updating our St. James’ Profile. A copy is available through our St James office.

There is some financial assistance available. If you are interested in attending or helping to sponsor someone to attend please contact Jenny Scott. The registration deadline is December 15. Currently three people are committed to participating. ADVENT ADVENT FOOD COLLECTION DRIVE FOR YOUNG WOLVES LODGE The Mothers’ Union invites each of you to join in collecting staple foods for young Aboriginal women (former residents of Young Wolves Lodge) and their children who struggle financially, especially at Christmas and during the bleak weeks of January when food for themselves and their children is in short supply. It’s easy to make your donation! Pick up one of the specially prepared bags from the Narthex. It contains a list of suggested items to donate. Purchase some of these, or other non-perishable items, and put them into the bag. The bag also contains a Christmas card for you to write a greeting and some encouraging words to these young women in recovery. Return the bags containing your donations, and your Christmas greeting, to the box in the Narthex by December 16. The food will be taken to Young Wolves Lodge on December 17, where the residents will make up the hampers. Please show these young women and their children that the people of St. James’ care about them! Your food donations, and your Christmas messages, will mean so much! (To learn more about the women who go through the program at Young Wolves Lodge, please read our latest newsletter, contained in the bag, and visit our website: www.cominghomesociety.com) Thank you in advance for your generosity! The Mothers’ Union CHRISTMAS LESSONS & CAROLS December 19th, 7pm, in the Church St. James' Anglican Church and the Oculus Chamber Choir cordially invite you to join with them in this special service of Lessons and Carols,
preceded by a lively performance of Benjamin Britten's magical A Ceremony of Carols, written for upper voices. Hear readings that look forward to the Christmas story, as told throughout the Old Testament to the New, interspersed with carol singing and choral offerings from the Oculus Chamber Choir. FLOWER DEDICATIONS FOR CHRISTMAS We are now in the season of Advent and should be preparing for the beautification of the church for the Christmas season. Flowers are always so much more expensive at this time of year as many of them are imported. We will need several dedications to cover the cost of the Christmas flower arrangements and we hope that many of you are thinking of doing so. If you plan on making a dedication it is not possible to indicate which area you wish them to be placed. Just indicate on the flower chart that you wish to donate flowers for Christmas and inform the office by December 15, 9:00 AM, at the latest, in order to have your dedication printed in the Christmas bulletins. We are also looking for greenery from those of you who have cedar, holly or other evergreens in your garden. Please inform the office or myself if you are able to supply any of these and deliver them to the flower room by Monday, December 22. Many thanks. Celia Dodds, Flower Guild President

RENEWING OUR BUILDING FABRIC Roof Revolution have made excellent progress with the urgently needed repairs to, and renewal of the church roofs.
The Welsh slates have been cleaned to their original condition, seams repaired, and damaged slates replaced (from our stock supplied during the construction of the church). The flat roofs have been cleaned out and refurbished. The drains have been cleared and checked. Rotten wood in the bell tower ventilators has been replaced, as also a small number of boards damaged by water penetration on the floor of the bell tower The outer walls have been cleaned and repaired.
This phase of work will also include cleaning off and applying anti-corrosion paint to the steel crib supporting our superb bells. In addition, the bell crib will be strapped with steel to the robust reinforced concrete bell tower inner frame structure.
The work has been based on reports from a professional engineer – especially important to assure the stability of the reinforced concrete structure of the church, bell tower, and bell frame. The work has been conducted according to all relevant City of Vancouver by-laws (the permit is at the church office) and under the oversight of our Project Advisor for all repairs and renewal of the church buildings, Tom Fletcher.
Once the weather is appropriate next year, Roof Revolution will apply a protective coating – retaining the original appearance – to the slate bell tower roof. At that time they will seal the outer church fabric – and if funds permit – clean and re-surface the church interior proper. This work will renew the church as a remarkably significant part of the patrimony of Vancouver, and especially the Downtown Eastside.
In conjunction with our planned improvements to the Rectory, Hall and Crypt, these repairs will assure St. James’ continued, and even expanded, service to the Diocese and this community as a place of worship and practical nurture. Rhodri Windsor-Liscombe
