As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Painfully we have to unlearn our mistaken notions about glory, so that we can learn Christ's values and learn discipleship, consenting to serve and to be emptied and to let the light shine through us. For Christ's first nine months on earth Mary was his only visible medium; he shone only through her, as the sunlight shines with a special colour through the windows at Chartres [Cathedral]. Today, believers are his transparencies. If the light is to come through we have to be servants of the covenant love, wherever and in whatever way may be required, not for our own aggrandizement but in self forgetting; and this is indeed glorious, although it does not feel like it. Jerusalem stands not only for the Church as a whole, but for every lover of God; 'and the city has no need of sun or moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb' (Rev. 21.23). It is not your glory but his, and you have to consent to be transparent, to be the lantern not the light, like John the Baptist. Are you prepared to let this glory shine through you, through your unselfish loving, your smiling, your unselfseeking service and humility? Are you prepared to let the joy of the Lord radiate to others through you? In no other way will 'the glory of the Lord be revealed, and all mankind together see it'. It will be visible only if we allow Christ to be born in our lives and shine through us. He is leading you to glory. It works out in ordinariness, tedium, drabness, routine and the humdrum quality of most of our experience, and there is an over-whelming sense of how unglorious it all is. But the Spirit recycles this unpromising material, and the glory will be revealed in its time. “Glory Reinterpreted” The Coming of God, Dame Maria Boulding, OSB © SPCK 1982, p: 123, 124 Selected for the 2017 Advent Program of the RC Diocese of Arundel & Brighton, UK.

HYMN 98 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Hark the Glad Sound! The Saviour Comes (tune: RICHMOND) Hark the glad sound! The Saviour comes, the Saviour promised long: let every heart prepare a throne, and every voice a song. Christ comes, the prisoners to release in Satan's bondage held; the gates of brass before him burst; the iron fetters yield. Christ comes, the broken heart to bind, the bleeding soul to cure, and from the treasuries of grace to bless the humble poor. Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace, thy welcome shall proclaim; and heaven's eternal arches ring with thy beloved name.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Isaiah. The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you." Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God's people; no traveller, not even fools, shall go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Isaiah 35:1-10

CANTICLE My soul doth magnify the Lord : and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded : the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth : all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me : and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him : throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm : he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat : and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things : and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel : as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 1:46b-55 | Setting: Magnificat in G — Herbert Sumsion
SECOND READING Reader
A reading from the Letter of James. Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. James 5:7-10

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me." As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, 'See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he." Matthew 11:2-11

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, creator and preserver of all things. Now we watch for the day when he will come again in power and great triumph to judge this world; that we, without shame or fear, may rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants with all thy holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do make before thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of everlasting salvation, the memorial which he hath commanded: We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible CLERGY NOTES Gaudete (Rejoice!) Sunday, the Third of Advent, sees a lift in the tone of this season of waiting and expectation. The vestments are rose-coloured, there are flowers at the altar, the rose candle in the Advent wreath is lit. “Gaudete” is the first word in Latin of the traditional entrance antiphon (printed on the Bulletin cover) on this Sunday, Philippians 4.4,5: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Indeed the Lord is near.” There has been an appropriate solemnity in the Advent liturgy as we have been invited to ponder on the coming of the Lord in judgment, hearing again the Prophets’ and John the Baptist’s call to repentance and conversion, to turning God-ward again. This antiphon’s words from St Paul remind us that we may be joyful as we wait for this coming of the Lord Jesus in the light of the victory already won in his dying and rising again. In the midst of the trials and uncertainties of our world St Paul encourages us to have confidence that God’s kingdom, of justice and love, mercy and peace, is indeed coming: cause for joy indeed.
This theme is echoed in the Advent Preface for the Mass in the Book of Alternative Services: “Now we watch for the day when he will come again in power and great triumph to judge this world; that we, without shame or fear, may rejoice to behold his appearing.” Yes, we are all called to repentance, to conversion and newness of life, but we are invited to do so with confidence in God’s love and graciousness, “without shame or fear”, and above all, in joy. May you know Joy, this Advent and Christmastide. Fr. Kevin

The Drive extends until Dec. 29. Please bring your items in a bag or box and leave them in the Baptistry. At this time of year warm clothing is in high demand – parkas, gloves, mittens, toques, scarves and warm socks. As well, non-perishable food items such as canned soup, canned stew, beans, instant coffee, pancake mix and so on, would be most welcome. January is a lean month, so The Aboriginal Front Door, and Warriors Against Violence really appreciate having nonperishable food and clothes donations to pass on to the families who attend their workshops and healing circles.
