To strive to maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves, and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________ TODAY 8:00 am Morning Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel 8:30 am Low Mass, Lady Chapel 9:15 am Coffee Hour, Bishops’ Room 10:30 am High Mass, Church 12:00 pm Coffee Hour, Bishops’ Room 5:00 pm Evening Prayer, Blessed Sacrament Chapel ______________________________________________________________________ This booklet is printed on recycled paper. If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection JOY THE BEAUTY of the earth, the radiance of saints, the clean strength of truth, the whole wonder and world of good will proceed from the joy of God. May the joy that is thine, O my God, become also mine; let it shine through me, gleaming with faith, beaming with hope, teeming with love, unquenchable in pain. Tune the strings of my spirit to the music of thine: make me bring to the company of the faithful, --nay, of all people-a humble, repentant, lively, singing gladness: let me meet and defeat the devil, all devils, with a smile. Dear God, what, in the whole universe, is this Joy? No less, none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. He that hath the Son, hath life, thy life and the music and marvels of it. Christ is the author of all joyfullnesses that are pure and enduring; Christ, their communicator every day and all day long: Christ, their end beyond mortal horizons. All joy is mine, to all eternity; for I am Christ’s, and Christ is God’s. My God My Glory, Eric Milner-White

HYMN 98 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — Hark the Glad Sound! The Saviour Comes (tune: RICHMOND) Hark the glad sound! The Saviour comes, the Saviour promised long: let every heart prepare a throne, and every voice a song. Christ comes, the prisoners to release in Satan's bondage held; the gates of brass before him burst; the iron fetters yield. Christ comes, the broken heart to bind, the bleeding soul to cure, and from the treasuries of grace to bless the humble poor. Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace, thy welcome shall proclaim; and heaven's eternal arches ring with thy beloved name.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Zephaniah. Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgements against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the Lord. Zephaniah 3:14-20

Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, and this is known in all the world. Antiphon Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel. Antiphon Isaiah 12:2-6 8 | HIGH MASS

HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?" In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, "Teacher, what should we do?" He said to them, "Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you." Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what should we do?" He said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages." As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. Luke 3:7-18

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, creator and preserver of all things. Now we watch for the day when he will come again in power and great triumph to judge this world; that we, without shame or fear, may rejoice to behold his appearing. PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants with all thy holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do make before thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of everlasting salvation, the memorial which he hath commanded: We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Now I sink before thee lowly, filled with joy most deep and holy, as with trembling awe and wonder on thy mighty acts I ponder; how, by mystery surrounded, depths no man hath ever sounded, none may dare to pierce unbidden secrets that with thee are hidden. The Thurible Notes from the Clergy The Third Sunday of Advent is known traditionally as Gaudete (Latin for “Rejoice,” or “Be Joyful”) Sunday, from the Latin translation of the second reading from Philippians [4.4], sung as an antiphon too on this day, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.” As an accompanying sign of a lightening of the rigour of the season, the colour of the vestments is rose. In a world of growing political tension and uncertainty, of cataclysmic predictions about the future of our environment, of an ever-widening gap between the haves and the have-nots, of the increasing oppression of minorities, one might well ask what it means, whether even it is possible, to be joyful. Two things, it seems to me, are important to bear in mind here. First, while often we hear only of the challenges and the bad news, there are good news stories to celebrate, to gladden the heart: the work of countless volunteers and charitable organisations, new insights and encouragements from a chance encounter, the support of family, friends and relatives. Secondly, to rejoice, to be joyful always, is not to be on a

constant emotional high, oblivious to the circumstances in which we find ourselves and our world. Rather, St Paul, writing from his own experience of hardships, trials and tribulations, is urging the Philippians, and by extension us today, to have a quiet trust and confidence that whatever is happening to and around us, the Lord of creation, of life and death, will hold us and God’s world in God’s love, here and hereafter, as God held his Son in and through death into the resurrection life. In this is the peace of God which passes understanding, in this is our joy and our Advent hope. Alongside these words from Philippians we may also draw strength from what Paul writes in Romans [8.38,39]: “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

OUR PARISH TODAY: ADVENT FORMATION: Walking Backwards to Christmas This book study will work with Stephen Cottrell’s brilliant book Walking Backwards to Christmas. Using the deceptively simple device of telling the Christmas story backwards Stephen Cottrell helps us encounter it as though for the first time. His approach enables us to get under the skin of a complex narrative, giving us insights into its many horrors as well as its joys. The books for this study are available for a one time suggested donation of $15.00 each. All are welcome and encouraged to participate. If you need assistance with the cost of the book, please see Mother Lucy or Fr. Kevin.

DONATIONS NEEDED The Mothers’ Union and the Coming Home Society are collecting non-perishable food and other clothing items for two aboriginal organizations during Advent and Christmas. The Aboriginal Front Door, administered by Kelvin Bee, helps people in need with food or clothing, especially during the cold winter months. The Warriors Against Violence, a community organization responding to families suffering domestic violence, is being supported by the Coming Home Society. If you can help please find a plastic bag in the Christmas Box in the Narthex, which gives a description of the two initiatives and a list of suggested items to donate. It also contains the Annual Report of the Coming Home Society. Many thanks for your generosity.
