Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Isaiah Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted." Isaiah 7:10-16

HOLY GOSPEL

8 | HIGH MASS

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us." When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus. Matthew 1:18-25

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God, creator and preserver of all things. Now we watch for the day when he will come again in power and great triumph to judge this world; that we, without shame or fear, may rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

Kneel

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we thy humble servants with all thy holy Church, remembering the precious death of thy beloved Son, his mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again in glory, do make before thee, in this sacrament of the holy bread of eternal life and the cup of everlasting salvation, the memorial which he hath commanded: We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES Images of Jerusalem, snowcovered, have swirled through media outlets these last few weeks. Whilst living in Jerusalem, in the early nineties, I spent a Christmas in the Holy City and that winter “Snow had fallen, snow on snow” with an unusually heaviness. A brilliant peace had blanketed that place which has long cried out for the holiness of reconciliation. One night I wended my way onto the roofs of the Old City and stumbled upon a snow-ball “fight” of epic proportions: Israeli soldiers had put down their weapons and Palestinians had exchanged their ammunition of stones for snow. It was a remarkable sight: within view were the domes of the Church of the Resurrection (the Holy Sepulchre) and the Dome of the Rock, and enemies played – momentarily forgetting their struggles. That Advent there were no prefigurations of Christmas. Where was the tinsel? Where were the Christmas trees? Where was Santa? The trappings and accoutrements of Christmas were nowhere to be seen. The Feast of the Nativity was only what the Churches observed: the cultural context – Islamic and Jewish – was

unornamented by the mystery of an unmarried teenage pregnancy. I treasure that privilege of experiencing an “essential” Christmas – so different to the Merry Christmas / Seasons Greetings / Happy Solstice / Happy Holidays we experience in the West. As I write, Vancouver is temporarily bleached with snowfall and many refugees from the conflict in Syria fight for survival due to the unusually harsh wintry conditions.

SAINTS THIS WEEK Saint Stephen Deacon and Martyr December 26

The Holy Innocents December 28

Stephen appears in the Book of Acts when the church at Jerusalem was experiencing internal troubles. Its membership was drawn from two groups of Jews – those who were native Palestinians and those who belonged to “the Dispersion.” The latter group consisted of Jews who had been born and raised in other lands; their native tongue was Greek, and so they were called “the Hellenists.” Rivalry between these two groups had been a feature of Jewish life for a long time, and converts to Christ brought it with them when they entered the Church. It made the Greekspeaking members quick to complain that their widows were not getting a fair share of the community’s food and financial support. To resolve the problem, the apostles appointed seven of the Hellenists to administer the Church’s resources and care for its poor. Stephen, described as “a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit,” was one of these seven. Set apart by prayer and the laying-on of hands he became the first to do what the Church considers to be the work of a deacon.

The story of the Holy Innocents is found in the Gospel according to Matthew, and it is the story of an atrocity.

Just before he died . . . Stephen prayed that Jesus would receive his spirit and forgive his murderers. He thereby became the first Christian martyr – not only because he died for his witness to Christ, but also because he bore witness to God’s will that all, even our worst enemies, may know forgiveness in Jesus Christ.

The Holy Innocents may also be considered the patron saints of our own age. For we live in an age of atrocities, in a time infamous for the slaughter of innocent bystanders who never chose the causes for which they have been made to die. By celebrating this feast, we perform an office for the Holy Innocents and all other victims of massacre. We become their voice and cry out for God to remember the slaughter – and to remember them for the sake of Christ, himself the great Innocent who was crucified by “the rulers of this age.”

For All the Saints: Prayers and Readings for Saints’ Day, ABC, 1994

Herod the Great was titled “king of the Jews,” but he held his throne at the pleasure of the Roman emperor. The precariousness of his power made him all the more ruthless in defending it. Thus, when he learned that the Christ, the true king of the Jews, had been born at Bethlehem, Herod wanted to do away with him. But he did not know the exact identity of the child, so he sent his troops to slaughter all the infants of Bethlehem on the chance that one of the victims would be the Christ-child. The murdered infants never had an opportunity to know Jesus or to confess him in their own right. But they all died for the sake of Christ, and Herod’s atrocity sealed the name of Christ on each one of them. The Holy Innocents are therefore considered the prototype of all Christian martyrs.

DIDO’S “DID YOU KNOW?”

Our task is not to lounge around on couches wearing soft robes, but to train for the work before us, and to gather up every possible friend and partner in making the world whole. We’re sent out on that Holy Way that Isaiah speaks of, that John the Baptist came preparing, to live as Jesus’ body in this world. That’s our mission. “Maranatha” is one of the earliest prayers of the Church! It most probably meant “O Lord, come!” It is a prayer for the Parousia – the second and final coming of Christ. Maranatha expresses both the Church’s belief in the risen Jesus as Lord and its hope in his glorious coming at the last day, already anticipated and guaranteed by Jesus’ presence in the Eucharist. Maranatha is an Aramaic expression used by Paul in 1 Corinthians 16:22. It is thought to have originated in the early Aramaic-speaking Church of Palestine. The Book of Revelation ends with these words, including at the very end Maranatha: “The one who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20). How might the Church today recover praying this prayer? Advent is the season – when we joyfully expect the second coming of Christ – to pray Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus! THE THURIBLE | 27
