Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. Godly Play will take place in this area during the first part of the service. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection O Adonai by Malcolm Guite Unsayable, you chose to speak one tongue, Unseeable, you gave yourself away, The Adonai, the Tetragramaton Grew by a wayside in the light of day. O you who dared to be a tribal God, To own a language, people and a place, Who chose to be exploited and betrayed, If so you might be met with face to face, Come to us here, who would not find you there, Who chose to know the skin but not the pith, Who heard no more than thunder in the air, Who marked the mere events and not the myth. Touch the bare branches of our unbelief And blaze again like fire in every leaf. Waiting on the Word, A poem a day for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany, Malcolm Guite, 2015: p. 70

At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN 96 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) - Creator of the Stars of Night Creator of the stars of night, Thy people’s everlasting light, Jesu, Redeemer, save us all, And hear Thy servants when they call. Thou, sorrowing at the helpless cry Of all Creation doomed to die, Didst save our lost and guilty race By healing gifts of heavenly grace. When earth was near its evening hour, Thou didst in love’s redeeming power, Like bride-groom from his chamber, come Forth from a maiden mother’s womb. At thy great name, exalted now, All knees in lowly homage bow, All things in heaven and earth adore, And own thee King for evermore. To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One, Praise, honour, might, and glory be From age to age eternally.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Isaiah. Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted." Isaiah 7:10-16

Hear, O Shepherd of Israel, leading Joseph like a flock; shine forth, you that are enthroned upon the cherubim. In the presence of Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, stir up your strength and come to help us. Restore us, O God of hosts; show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. Antiphon O Lord God of hosts, how long will you be angered despite the prayers of your people? You have fed them with the bread of tears; you have given them bowls of tears to drink. Antiphon You have made us the derision of our neighbours, and our enemies laugh us to scorn. Restore us, O God of hosts; show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. Antiphon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name, including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to thee, O Lord. Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us." When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus. Matthew 1:18-25

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

The Thurible CLERGY NOTES Human Beings—Not for Sale O Come, O Come, Emmanuel and bring your liberating justice into our world. Strengthen our will to address injustice and to work-towards the liberation of all who are in bondage. Bless us in our-Advent journey. Give us eyes to see every human being as a beloved child of God and give us the courage to proclaim that human beings are not for sale. Amen. Matthew 1:18–25 One of the names of God that I love the most is Emmanuel— God with us. I remember being struck as a child by the amazing notion that God came to us in human form. The idea of Emmanuel as a baby and as a child made God approachable to me in ways that other names and forms of God did not. O come, O Come, Emmanuel quickly became one of my favourite hymns. The life, baptism, death and resurrection of Jesus serve to make holy the human condition. In our baptisms we are reminded that God finds each and every one of us precious, that we are the beloved children of God. With Human Beings—Not for Sale, we make that statement with the knowledge of the reality that in our world there are places where human beings are for sale. We’d
like to think there is no longer slavery in our world, but there is.
According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), over 21 million men, women and children around the world are in slavery. Modern slavery has become the second most profitable criminal activity in the world. Someone is held to be in slavery if that person is forced to work through mental or physical threat; is owned or controlled by an “employer”; is dehumanised, treated as a commodity or bought and sold as “property”; or is physically constrained or has restrictions placed on freedom of movement. Forms of modern slavery include bonded labour, child slavery, early and forced marriage, forced labour, descentbased slavery, and human trafficking. Slavery exists today despite the fact that is illegal in all of the countries where it is practiced. In the Small Catechism (1535), Martin Luther explains the 4th petition of the Lord’s Prayer and expands on the definition of “daily bread” to include everything required for the “necessities and nourishment for our bodies.” In a similar way, Human Beings— Not for Sale might be expanded to
include anything that detracts from the necessities and nourishment of our body. When we think about modern slavery, these might include poverty, war and racism; being a refugee or being internally displaced; female genital mutilation; domestic violence, rape or honour killing; unchecked disease; the intergenerational trauma which is the legacy of residential schools; inadequate housing; the lack of safe drinking water; the commodification of our bodies; the societal emphasis on unattainable ideals of beauty; violence perpetuated in video games; and more. I am sure you can add more things to this list. There are many times in my life that I have taken great comfort in the knowledge of the humanity of Jesus: that God truly understands the joys and the sorrows of human existence. In Matthew 25 Jesus reminds us Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. Emmanuel—who came to ransom captive Israel—is also with those who are in bondage today. God calls us to join in God’s holy work of liberation whether by providing comfort to those in need or by working to end unjust structures that continue to take away the human rights of God’s beloved children. KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. This is the fourth Sunday in Advent. The Gospel today tells us all about Joseph and how he was feeling. He loved Mary, but he knew that the baby Mary was carrying was not his son. He did not want to make Mary feel badly, but he was not sure now that he wanted to marry her. He was thinking about it all during the day. That night, when he went to sleep, he had a dream. In the dream, the Angel of the Lord came to him and called him Joseph, Son of David. She told him not to worry about marrying Mary, and that the baby she was having was actually given to her by God. Mary would give birth to a son, and his name was to be Jesus. He was told that this baby would save people from their sins. When Joseph woke up he felt much better after his dream, and he did marry Mary as the angel had told him to do. Hello, God. Help us to listen, like Joseph, for what you are asking us to do, even if it is hard, and then give us strength to do it. Amen.

Last January, Bishop Melissa Skelton and Archbishop, Fred Hiltz, appealed to our diocese (and Canada wide) to respond to this crisis. The Outreach Committee committed $2,500.00 to this effort and asked St. James' parishioners to match this amount. With hearts of compassion and generosity, St. James' parishioners not only matched this amount but exceeded it to the sum of $4,500.00 giving us a total of $7,000.00 to combine with a parish from Toronto and a student refugee support group from UBC to help St. Helens' cover living costs for this reasonably large number of THE THURIBLE | 21 27

Two weeks ago, 4 more family members arrived in Vancouver and St. Helens' volunteers got them settled into their basement suite on December 11, 'in the snow'. They are a young couple with a baby boy (2 months) and a little girl (2 years). The other five family members are yet to arrive and there are no indicators as to when this will happen. We will certainly keep you apprised of new developments as we receive more information. St. Helens' has posted a household items list online so you can see if there are any items that you can donate. As of yesterday, it seemed that most items were covered but it's interesting to see the process which helps avoid duplication and storage challenges.
