It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. A Reflection Advent ‘O’s O Divine Eagle soaring in the skies, shadow gliding across the valley floor, come and hover over us, your brood, who pierced only the pinions that can bear us up from death and sin to sun and moon and eternal life. O Wounded Healer enduring in the heart of God, enfolding the universe in strong and gentle hands, come and soothe our flesh with astringent balm. O Emmanuel God-with-us, at one with our humanity, whose glory is our abundant life, come and transform us who find our destiny in you. O Music of the Spheres, O Song of Silence, echoing through ears that listen, come with still small voice and heal. O Child of God calling together the creatures of the earth, the vulnerable with the powerful, come, gentle our strength, coax our trembling into song. Entrance Rite PRELUDE Chorale preludes for Advent — J. S. Bach

At the entrance of the clergy and servers all stand. HYMN 96 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) - Creator of the Stars of Night Creator of the stars of night, Thy people’s everlasting light, Jesu, Redeemer, save us all, And hear Thy servants when they call. Thou, sorrowing at the helpless cry Of all Creation doomed to die, Didst save our lost and guilty race By healing gifts of heavenly grace. When earth was near its evening hour, Thou didst in love’s redeeming power, Like bride-groom from his chamber, come Forth from a maiden mother’s womb. At thy great name, exalted now, All knees in lowly homage bow, All things in heaven and earth adore, And own thee King for evermore. To God the Father, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One, Praise, honour, might, and glory be From age to age eternally.

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Second Book of Samuel. Now when the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, the king said to the prophet Nathan, "See now, I am living in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent." Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you." But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?" Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be established forever. 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16

Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing; from age to age my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness. For I am persuaded that your love is established for ever; you have set your faithfulness firmly in the heavens. Antiphon "I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn an oath to David my servant: 'I will establish your line for ever, and preserve your throne for all generations.'" Antiphon You spoke once in a vision and said to your faithful people: "I have set the crown upon a warrior and have exalted one chosen out of the people. I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him. Antiphon My hand will hold him fast and my arm will make him strong. No enemy shall deceive him, nor any wicked man bring him down. I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him. My faithfulness and love shall be with him, and he shall be victorious through my name. Antiphon I shall make his dominion extend from the Great Sea to the River. He will say to me, 'You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.'" Antiphon Psalm 89:1-4, 19-26

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Now to God who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith - to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! HOLY GOSPEL Deacon People Deacon People

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you." But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I am a virgin?" The angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God." Then Mary said, "Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her. Luke 1:26-38

Blessing and glory and thanksgiving be unto thee, almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death, until his coming again. Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it; and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all, of this; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

And we entirely desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, most humbly beseeching thee to grant, that by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we and all thy whole Church may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion; And we pray that by the power of thy Holy Spirit, all we who are partakers of this holy communion may be fulfilled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; through Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old... “Peace on the earth, goodwill to men, from heaven”s all-gracious King”, goes the familiar 19th century Christmas Carol. This may create in our mind’s eye a sentimental Christmas card scene of stars and cherubs and harps and shepherds, but the writer, Edmund Sears, intends a sharper, more challenging impact: “Yet with the woes of sin and strife, the world has suffered long. Beneath the angel-strain have rolled two thousand years of wrong. And man at war with man hears not the love-song which they bring. O hush the noise, ye men of strife, and hear the angels sing.” Bethlehem today, as our Primate Fred Hiltz references in his Christmas Message, is beset by tension and hostilities, as it was by the Roman occupation those two thousand years ago. As 2018 dawns, there are increasing economic and political tensions and rumblings across the world, and closer to home. Climate change and its denial endanger our beautiful planet, entrusted to us by the Creator.

As the tiny, vulnerable Christchild was born into a messy and broken world all those years ago, so now He longs to be born again into this same world of 2018, broken and messy still, in and through us, his weak and fragmented people. Are our ears open to hear again the angels’ theme, are we ready to bring the light and peace of Christ to bear in our lives and in our relationships, in our small way to join with all of goodwill to herald and work for the coming of God’s kingdom of justice, righteousness and peace? “O hush the noise, ye men of strife, and hear the angels sing.” “For lo! The days are hastening on, by prophet bards foretold, when with the ever-circling years, comes round the age of gold. When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling, and the whole world give back the song, which now the angels sing.”

Dec. 24, 10:30 pm in the Church Marc-Antoine Charpentier was a contemporary of JS Bach, who was particularly drawn to writing Christmas music. His Messe de Minuit pour Noël is based on traditional French Noëls, and was composed for the great Jesuit church of St. Louis in Paris, where Charpentier was the music director. The liturgy of Midnight Mass permitted the singing and playing of these Christmas carols, but Charpentier’s idea of basing a whole mass on French Noëls is unique. Most of the tunes that Charpentier used would have been as familiar to the people at his time as “Silent Night” or “O Come All Ye Faithful” are to us to-day. The special character of the Messe de Minuit is striking because of the cheerful, dance-like mood that reflects the joy of Christ’ birth from the Kyrie to the Agnus Dei.

For the Messe de Minuit, Charpentier envisaged a small ensemble of string players & recorder players, together with a four-part mixed choir. For the Christmas Eve at St. James’ the High Mass Choir is joined by a professional instrumental ensemble to celebrate Christ's nativity.

All are welcome to join at St James’ to experience the joy of Christ’s birth to the music of Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit pour Noël. Instrumental prelude starts at 10 pm; the Mass begins at 10:30 pm. CONVERSATION Confessional / Spiritual Conversation by appointment with one of the priests.
