Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

Reflection By the grace of God you have been called to a life in which everything is inspired by the sacrament of the Eucharist. You must grow in daily knowledge of this mystery, and in a greater love for the Lord who gives Himself in it. The celebration of the Eucharist is the centre of your life. It is the highest expression and the strongest support of your life in community. It is the beginning and end of your actions; the source and consummation of your service to God. When you celebrate the memorial of Christ give thanks to God for His countless benefits. Never tire of praising Him one in heart and voice with your brothers, and united with Christ, the sacrifice of praise. Renew yourself in the spirit of love and unity because you are sharing with your brothers the same bread, the same cup. -from Rule for a New Brother, Benedictine Priory - Regina Pacis, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN 276 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — For All the Saints For all the saints, who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia!
Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might; thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia! O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win, with them the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia, Alleluia! O blest communion, fellowship divine! we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, Alleluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia! The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; sweet is the calm of paradise the blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia, Alleluia! 6 | HIGH MASS

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING
Be seated
Reader
A reading from the Wisdom of Solomon.
Reader All
The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. Wisdom of Solomon 3:1-9 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE READING
Sub-deacon
A reading from the Revelation to John. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end." Revelation 21:1-6A

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and face the book of the Gospels
When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go." John 11:32-44

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY I have been surprised by the enthusiasm with which all Vancouver appears to embrace the celebration of Halloween, which in the UK is mainly a time for youngsters. Here everyone seems to have a pumpkin, or a costume, or a skeletal skull. I'm always one for a party, and I have no desire here to pour cold water on the celebrations (the weather can do that on its own!). My lament perhaps is that this secular feast, with ghouls and ghosts, attempts to shock and frighten, a sense of mockery and denial of the reality of death, has overshadowed the great Feast of All Saints (remember Halloween is an eluded form of All Hallows' (Saints') Eve) we celebrate today, and the Commemoration of All Souls' tomorrow. This reflects the growing sanitisation of death in western society, either through mockery or denial. We would rather not talk about it, and use euphemisms such as “she has passed” rather than “she has died.” Fewer and fewer people have been present at the death of a loved one, or have touched a dead body. Celebrations of life, with the body absent, often take the place of a funeral: of course, at a funeral we should celebrate
and give thanks for the life of the deceased, but there should also be space to grieve, to pray for family and friends, and to commend the one we love to the care and mercy of God. Death is real, and the one certain thing, once we have been born, that will happen to each and to all of us! Our celebration of All Saints' and All Souls' do not deny the reality of death, but point to the Christian hope of life through and beyond death, revealed to us in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Today, All Saints', we rejoice with and honour all those down the ages, known and unknown, who have shone brightly with the light of Christ in their generations, and now share in the eternal vision of God's glory. Tomorrow, All Souls', we shall remember and give thanks for our own loved ones departed, and perhaps mourn them too, as we commend them anew to God's loving care. “ Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death is your sting?”

The Editorial Team seeks submissions on the great truths of Christmas – so well expressed in the Bidding Prayer for the traditional Nine Lessons and Carols, which invites us to remember Christ’s birth in the midst of poverty: Go in “heart and mind even unto Bethlehem,” mindful of “the poor and the helpless . . . the lonely and unloved.” We especially welcome submissions that celebrate the glorious mystery of the Incarnation, but also reflect on the needs of our parish, our neighbourhood, and our world. Submissions on all topics are welcome, though priority will be given to those related to the theme. Please send us your photographs, artwork, poetry, and articles (maximum, about 500 words). Submissions may be left in the PAX mail slot outside the Church Office, or emailed to stap@shaw.ca
KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. This week's Gospel Reading tells us two very important things. It tells us that Jesus is for sure the Son of God. He was sent by God to help us, and He raises Lazarus to show God's Glory. In the story, it says "Jesus Wept." This shows us that when we are sad and cry, Jesus knows exactly how we feel, as he felt very sad and cried too sometimes. Prayer Hello God. It's me. Thank you for sending your Son to help us, and for showing us through the bible, the wonderful things that Jesus did to prove how glorious you are. Amen

COMMEMORATION Richard Hooker Priest and Teacher of the Faith, 1600 November 3
Richard Hooker was an English priest who died in 1600, and we remember him today as a theologian who defended the Church of England and its choice of “the middle way” between Roman Catholic and Puritan ideologies. Hooker entered Oxford University in 1567 and for eighteen years devoted himself to scholarship and reflection on the subtle points of theology. He became deputy professor of Hebrew, was ordained to the priesthood, and appeared to be set on a purely academic career. But his learning, moderation, and commitment to the Church of England brought him to the attention of the authorities, and he was appointed Master of the Temple, an office of great prestige because it made him the chief preacher to the legal community of London. He held this post for six years, then resigned to become the rector of a parish near Salisbury. A few years later he moved to a rectory in the diocese of Canterbury, where he died at the age of forty-six. He was a quiet man, loving to his wife and children, glad in his piety, and happy in his ministry. But the Church remembers him primarily for the one great work that he wrote — a majestic study entitled Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity. This work was addressed to a group of English Protestants who were nicknamed Puritans because they sought to purify the Church of England according to their own narrow reading of the Bible. Against this movement Hooker argued for a more liberal outlook, which coordinated the testimony of Scripture, the course of Christian history, and the values of human reason, in order to defend the English Church as a communion for all the people, not just a small group of “saints.” The experience of our tradition has confirmed his teaching, and today we honour his work as a true cornerstone of Anglican history. COMMEMORATION St. Winefride Abbess, c.660 November 6
St. Winefride died in the year 650 in a convent in Gwytherin, Denbighshire, Wales, and in 1398 her relics were transferred with great pomp to the Benedictine abbey in Shrewsbury where they were enshrined and venerated. It was at about that time, some 500 years after her death, that fascinating legends about her life began to be recorded. The most amazing of these is the claim that the young Caradog, a chieftain of Hawarden, had fallen in love with Winefride but she shunned his advances. He pursued her as she fled to the church that St. Beuno, her uncle, had built and in a rage he cut off her head. Robert of Shrewsbury’s life of the saint says that Caradog was swallowed up by the earth at the scene of the crime, while at the place where Winefride’s head hit the ground a fragrant spring suddenly appeared. St. Beuno raised her to life again, placing her severed head back on her shoulders, before departing to found a church at Clynnog Fawr Arfon. She left home to become a nun, and then an abbess. She is said to have died naturally 15 years after her miraculous resuscitation. The spring attached to her legend has given its name to Holywell (Tre Ffynnon), Clwyd, and down the centuries, and right up to the present day, pilgrims have travelled there in the hope of finding healing for their illnesses. http://www.dioceseofshrewsbury.org/about-us/saints-and-martyrs/st-winefride
