PROCESSIONAL HYMN 276 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — For All the Saints For all the saints, who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! Thou wast their rock, their fortress and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia! O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win, with them the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia, Alleluia! O blest communion, fellowship divine! we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, Alleluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia! The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; sweet is the calm of Paradise the blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia!
But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia, Alleluia!

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Daniel. In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: ‘As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom for ever—for ever and ever.’ Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice in his Maker; let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Antiphon
Let them praise his Name in the dance; let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp. For the Lord takes pleasure in his people and adorns the poor with victory. Let the faithful rejoice in triumph; let them be joyful on their beds. Antiphon Let the praises of God be in their throat and a two-edged sword in their hand; To wreak vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples; Antiphon To bind their kings in chains and their nobles with links of iron; To inflict on them the judgement decreed; this is glory for all his faithful people. Hallelujah! Antiphon Psalm 149
EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians.
In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him 10 | SOLEMN MASS

All stand and face the book of the Gospels
Then Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you." Luke 6:20-31

Truly Jerusalem name we that shore, vision of peace, that brings joy evermore; wish and fulfillment can severed be ne’er, nor the thing prayed for come short of the prayer. We, where no troubles distraction can bring, safely the anthems of Sion shall sing, while for thy grace, Lord, their voices of praise thy blessèd people shall evermore raise. There dawns no Sabbath, no Sabbath is o’er, those Sabbath-keepers have one and no more; one and unending is that triumph-song which to the angels and us shall belong. Now, in the meanwhile, with hearts raised on high, we for that country must yearn and must sigh, seeking Jerusalem, dear native land, through our long exile on Babylon's strand. Low before him with our praises we fall, of whom and in whom, and through whom are all: of whom, the Father; and through whom, the Son; in whom, the Spirit, with these ever one.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again;
who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. POSTLUDE Placare Christe servulis (Op. 38, No. 16) — Marcel Dupré The French organist Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) wrote this toccata for All Saints in the summer of 1942, as part of a larger collection entitled Le tombeau de Titelouze. It is based on the hymn Placare Christe Servulis, which is found in the Roman Breviary as a hymn for Matins and Vespers for the Feast of All Saints. The first two verses of this hymn are translated as follows: TO Thy poor servants reconciled show mercy, Christ, for whom the mild and Virgin Patroness this grace implore before Thy Father's face. Ye glorious hosts, whose circle nine before God's throne refulgent shine, shield us with your celestial arms from past, present, and future harms. Played on (nearly!) full organ as specified by the composer, the melody is first introduced in the top voice of the manuals, and then taken up by the pedals. This interchange continues to the conclusion, where there is a brilliant two-part cadenza in fifths and sixths, which goes up two octaves to prepare for a typical Dupré flourish of big chords to finish the piece.
During the postlude you are encouraged to remain quietly in the nave, or to move to the Parish Centre to enjoy coffee hour conversation. For prayer requests, please contact the office or speak to a member of the clergy. Please notify the Parish Office (604-685-2532) when a parishioner/friend/family member is hospitalized or housebound. The Office will arrange visitation, Holy Communion or Anointing with the Parish Clergy Team and Pastoral Care Ministry Coordinator. If entering hospital, please inform the hospital on arrival that you (or the patient you are with) are Anglican and ask for the hospital’s Anglican chaplain.

The Thurible CLERGY NOTES The days are shorter, we put our clocks back in an effort to control our access to daylight, but we are heading into a season of darkness and then waiting. Waiting and praying for the time when we celebrate the light of the world, Jesus incarnate God, alive and among us in the flesh.
It’s around this time of year that people say things like “where does the time go?” Or how is it almost Christmas already?” Then begins the frenzy. This year for our Advent formation we will be looking at different types of prayer, offering space for practice, discussion and reflection. There will be more info to follow on this. In the mean time I’d like to go back to the map that we stuck our pins in and ask about meet ups. I’ve spoken to lots of you individually about meeting in groups based on geography, for example the north shore, what would it be like to get together for coffee with others who live in that area and talk scripture? Is this something you’d be
interested in doing in the area where you live? We have people in East Van, downtown, here near the church etc. I believe that small group gatherings like this are essential for us to flourish. By getting to know one another and studying together we can find new ways to be God’s church in the world. This week the Heart of the City Festival is on and St. James’ will be busy. We’ve already had the Cantata Singers and the All Souls Mass, with more to come. Take a look through the Heart of the City brochure, I found I was surprised by how much great art and theatre is happening in our neighbourhood. As we know, when many Vancouverites think of the downtown Eastside, they take a negative view. We know different, there is a tremendous sense of community down here, so check out some festival events and get to know our neighbours a little better. See you soon, Mother Lucy

WOMEN’S GUILD PRESERVE SALE Sun. Nov. 17 In the Parish Centre after each mass. Pre-orders welcome. Forms available in the Narthex and Parish Centre.
PAX Contributions are invited for the Advent and Christmas edition of PAX. The broad theme again for this year-end issue considers the work of the Holy Spirit in our Parish, and explores where the Spirit may be leading St. James’. How is the Holy Spirit sustaining this church? Where do we see the gifts and the fruit of the Spirit – in the life of St. James’, in our own lives, and in the life of the wider community of the Downtown Eastside? Mindful of our strong tradition of social concern alongside our rich liturgy and sacramental worship, how is St. James’ being called to serve today? Submissions need not be theme related, for all contributions are welcome: poetry, pictures, articles (normally, not to exceed 500 words). Please leave or send your contributions c/o the Church Office, or send them directly to Paul Stanwood at stap@shaw.ca . Submission deadline is Sun. Nov. 17. FUNERAL PLANNING November, the month of remembering, All Saints’, All Souls’ and Armistice Day, is a timely reminder to us all of our own mortality, and of our responsibility to prepare ourselves spiritually and by ordering our affairs. For the sake of family & friends, it is important that we have a Will, and that we leave instructions regarding our preferred funeral arrangements. The Office has a form available for this purpose, and the Legacy booklet from the Diocese has a very helpful Checklist of things to bear in mind when preparing to make a Will. Copies are available today.
STEWARDSHIP RENEWAL “Christian Stewardship is a lifestyle choice that recognizes that everything is a gift from God. Jesus taught that our responsibility as disciples is to recognize that God is the provider of all that we possess and that our call is to be generous givers. A Christian steward contributes his or her time, talent, prayers, and financial resources with a willing and joyful spirit. Being a generous giver is a spiritual response to God’s goodness.” David Bell, United Methodist Church November is our annual Stewardship month, when we are all invited to reflect prayerfully on our Christian discipleship and the commitment of our time, our talents and our treasure. Every member on the Parish Roll will receive a letter in the next week or so, with a prayer card, and two forms, one for a financial pledge, one for a commitment of time. Please return the forms in the offertory (or by post, if you prefer) by Sunday 24 November, the Feast of the Reign of Christ, when there will be a celebratory Parish Lunch. This season is also an opportunity to acknowledge and thank all those engaged in our different Guilds and Ministries, through which St. James’ lives out its calling as the Body of Christ, in worship, witness, mission and service.
This week we give particular thanks to and for the Sanctuary Guild, the Organists & Choir, the Servers, and the Flower Guild.
QUIET DAY Sat. Nov 30 (St. Andrews’ Day) 10 am -- 2 pm “Ordinary People, Extraordinary Saints” Over the history of the church Jesus called people to be saints, people just like us. We will consider several “ordinary folk” of the last two centuries who have become extraordinary “saints”. Join us if you can. Led by Sr. Mary Christian Cross.
