Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. Godly Play will take place in this area during the first part of the service. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

Reflection THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED Are we to mourn our dead, our beloved, as they that have no hope? Thou, O God, art not God of the dead, but of the living. In thy resurrection, O Christ, we celebrate ours. The gift of thy life, O Holy Spirit, is not for a season, but for ever. As long as thou art with thy servants, thy children, they are with thee; they lose nothing by dying. They depart out of the world, but not from thy care. One sun hath set upon them, but a greater is risen. They are not dead; nay, it is death that hath died in them; their death that is buried in their grave. They leave behind the mortal, to put on immortality; theirs is entrance into healing, into rest, into glory. Lord, thou hast made, endowed, redeemed, employed thy children, thou canst not desert nor annihilate them, canst not but be gracious eternally. Thou forgettest not the dead whom we forget; thou rewardest the benefactors we never knew. Thou who holdest worlds in life holdest them. O Father, O Saviour, O Giver of Life, by thy mercy, thine unalterable love, gather thy sons and daughters together unto thyself, those who have taken thee for their strength, those who have served thee with sacrifice, those who have offered thee thanks and praise, May they rejoice in the Jerusalem of grace and peace, and praise thee among the choirs of the blessed, in joy without end. PROCESSIONAL HYMN 276 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — For All the Saints For all the saints, who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! Thou wast their rock, their fortress and their might; thou, Lord, their captain in the well fought fight; thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light. Alleluia, Alleluia! O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old, and win, with them the victor's crown of gold. Alleluia, Alleluia! O blest communion, fellowship divine! we feebly struggle, they in glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia, Alleluia! And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia, Alleluia! The golden evening brightens in the west; soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest; sweet is the calm of Paradise the blessed. Alleluia, Alleluia! But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day; the saints triumphant rise in bright array; the King of glory passes on his way. Alleluia, Alleluia!

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Daniel In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: "As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever - forever and ever." Daniel 7:1-3, 15-18

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Ephesians1:11-23

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and face the book of the Gospels
Then Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. "But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." Luke 6:20-31 The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee O Christ SERMON Deacon Joyce Locht At the conclusion of the sermon, silence is kept. HIGH MASS | 11

Truly Jerusalem name we that shore, vision of peace, that brings joy evermore; wish and fulfillment can severed be ne’er, nor the thing prayed for come short of the prayer. There, where no troubles distraction can bring, we the sweet anthems of Sion shall sing, while for thy grace, Lord, their voices of praise thy blessèd people eternally raise. Now, in the meantime, with hearts raised on high, we for that country must yearn and must sigh, seeking Jerusalem, dear native land, through our long exile on Babylon's strand. All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Remembrance Day falls on Friday of this week, when we shall remember before God all those, civilian and military, who lost their lives in the two World Wars of the twentieth century, the first of them inappropriately called “the war to end all wars”, and in conflict since. It is indeed a time to honour the courage and conviction of those who died, but it is also a salutary reminder of the horror of war, and of the imperative on us all to pray and to work for peace. The news-screens remind us hourly of warfare and violence across the globe. We live again in uncertain times, and we see expressed in different countries a rise in a politics of nationalism and defensiveness, the re-erection of barriers between “them” and “us”. There is a need to re-discover our common humanity and our mutual interdependence. Let us pray for the peace of the world, and for ourselves, in our small part of it, that we may be channels of Christ’s love, and instruments of his peace.
“Almighty God, the refuge of all who put their trust in you, we turn to you in these uncertain times. Direct the course of this world, we humbly pray, in accordance with your holy will; take away whatever hinders the nations from unity and concord; and prosper all counsels which make for righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.” “Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console, To be understood as to understand, To be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.”

This week in the gospel Jesus reminds us that when we go to heaven to be with God it will be wonderful. He was with his disciples and he told them they would be assured of their place in heaven by listening to God, following him and taking his advice. He said to treat people as you would like to be treated. If someone stole from you to forgive them and not ask for it back. Jesus wants us to be forgiving and kind and also giving to others. When someone is unkind bless them. If someone does bad things pray for them. That is a hard thing to do! When someone is unkind, we often feel like we want to hurt them back. That is not what God wants us to do. Even though it is hard, we must try to follow Jesus' example of forgiveness. God doesn't expect that we will be perfect, but he wants us to try to be kind and forgiving. Instead of being angry with others when they hurt us, we can try to remember we should pray for that person. Try this prayer when you have been hurt instead of hurting back: God, I do not understand why this person is so unhappy that they treat me badly. I pray you will help them to feel happier. Help me to forgive them, and to show them your love. I pray this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ. Amen.

COMMEMORATION Dedication of the Lateran Basilica November 9 In the tangled history of the Church, we are the heirs of several major divisions. The Eastern and Western branches of the Church went separate ways in 1054. The visible unity of the Western Church later was broken during the Reformation of the sixteenth century. Though we long for, and work toward, the visible unity of the Church, for nearly a thousand years the Holy Catholic Church has been One only in the mutual bond of our baptisms, our common early history, a common—though not always mutuallyrecognized—historic episcopate, and a variety of shared traditions and observances. Today’s observance arises from those share links. In the early centuries, the seats of five bishops were recognized as the primary episcopal sees and designated as patriarchates: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem. Other patriarchates were established in later centuries, but these were the original five. When the Eastern and Western Churches separated, the only one of the five in the West was that of Rome. Although Rome itself abandoned the title “Patriarch of the West” in 2006—no doubt because of its claim to a more universal jurisdiction in the Church — its status as a patriarchal see has never been questioned. Despite almost five hundred years of separation, Rome is the patriarchal see with which the Church of England and the Anglican Communion have historic ties. In recognition and celebration of that relation, we celebrate each year not only the dedications of our own diocesan cathedral and of Canterbury Cathedral in England, the mother church of the Anglican Communion, but today we also celebrate the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of the Pope as Bishop of Rome and Patriarch of the West.
The residence of the Popes which was named the Lateran Palace was built by Lateranus Palutius, whom the Roman Emperor Nero put to death to seize his goods. It was given in the year 313 by Constantine the Great to Saint Miltiades, the Pope, and was inhabited by his successors until 1308, when they moved to Avignon. The Lateran Basilica built by Constantine near the palace of the same name, is the first Basilica of the West. When the Lateran Church was partially ruined by fires, enemy invasions, and earthquakes, it was always rebuilt. In 1726, after one such restoration, Pope Benedict XIII consecrated it anew and assigned the commemoration of that event to the present day. The church was afterwards enlarged and beautified by Popes Pius IX and Leo XIII. http://magnificat.ca/cal/engl/11-09.htm THE THURIBLE | 29
