Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. Godly Play will take place in this area during the first part of the service. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. Reflection WONDER Men go abroad to wonder at the height of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars; and they pass by themselves without wondering. Confessions, Bk. X, St. Augustine Remember Abraham Heschel’s words in his old age: “I did not ask for success: I asked for wonder.” And wonder is giving (and calling) attention to the world in order to praise it. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Isaiah. Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. Isaiah 42:1-9

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is upon the mighty waters. Antiphon And in the temple of the Lord all are crying, "Glory!" The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king for evermore. The Lord shall give strength to his people; the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Book of Acts. Peter began to speak to the Gentiles: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Acts 10:34-43

HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." Matthew 3:13-17

HYMN

Stand The People sing the hymn while the People’s gifts of bread, wine and money are brought forward. 628 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) - O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High

O love, how deep, how broad, how high! It fills the heart with ecstasy, that God, the Son of God, should take our mortal form for mortals' sake. God sent no angel to our race, of higher or of lower place, but wore the robe of human frame for us, and to this lost world came. For us he was baptized, and bore his holy fast, and hungered sore; for us temptations sharp he knew; for us the tempter overthrew. For us he prayed, for us he taught, for us his daily works he wrought; by words and signs, and actions, thus still seeking not himself but us. For us by wickedness betrayed, scourged, mocked, in purple robe arrayed, he bore the shameful cross and death; for us at length gave up his breath. 14 | HIGH MASS

For us he rose from death again, for us he went on high to reign, for us he sent his Spirit here to guide, to strengthen, and to cheer. To God whose boundless love has won salvation for us through the Son, to God the Father, glory be both now and through eternity.

SURSUM CORDA & PROPER PREFACE

Stand

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. Who by water and the Holy Spirit hast made us a holy people in Jesus Christ our Lord; thou dost renew that mystery in bread and wine and nourish us, to show forth thy glory in all the world. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying: HIGH MASS | 15

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION Celebrant

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” +

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the body and blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. We praise thee, we bless thee, we thank thee and we pray to thee, Lord our God. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Sit or kneel 508 Blue Hymn Book (Common Praise) — I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Come unto me and rest; lay down, thou weary one, lay down thy head upon my breast." I came to Jesus as I was, so weary, worn, and sad; I found in him a resting place, and he has made me glad. I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Behold, I freely give the living water; thirsty one, stoop down and drink and live." I came to Jesus and I drank of that life-giving stream; my thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in him. I heard the voice of Jesus say, "I am this dark world's light; look unto me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright." I looked to Jesus and I found in him my star, my sun; and in that light of life I'll walk till travelling days are done.

Each person’s experience of God’s mercy and grace is a necessary window through which we see and appreciate the mercy of God toward the whole of creation. RECONCILIATION FEAST 2017 As part of the ongoing mandate to forge a new relationship between the Church and Aboriginal Peoples, in mid-2017 St. James’ Church will hold a Reconciliation Feast, to honour survivors of the Indian Residential Schools. In the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action, this will be one step in seeking to live out a new and mutual relationship together. Survivors and parishioners both will be invited to sit at the table together. Two themes will be explored: First and primarily, we will honour the strength, resilience, courage, and dignity of Residential School survivors. Secondly, we will celebrate the upcoming generation of aboriginal leaders who have received their cultural heritage from generations of survivors, and whose own lives now embody and carry these traditions forward. As far as we know, the event will be the first of its kind in Canada. Our hope is that it will provide one example of what reconciliation can actually look like, for other parishes also seeking to take practical steps forward. And to that end it will be documented by video.

We have applied for funding to a number of sources. The national Church’s Anglican Healing Fund has endorsed the project with a grant towards our costs. Parish members interested in volunteering for this work should contact Pat McSherry or Fr. Matthew for more information. Your financial contribution is also welcome. Cheques may be made out to “St James Church” with the words “Reconciliation Feast” on the memo line. This project is made possible through the joint efforts of St. James’ Church and the Street Outreach Initiative. Fr Matthew KIDS’ CORNER This week in the Gospel, Jesus seeks out John the Baptist and asks to be baptized by him. John says that he thinks it should be the other way round, Jesus should baptize John! Jesus assures John that this is the way it is supposed to happen. So, John does baptize Jesus in the River Jordan. When Jesus comes up out of the water, he sees the Heavens open over his head and he feels the Holy Spirit come very close to him. Jesus hears his Father say, "This is my Son whom I love; with him I am well pleased." Prayer Hello God. Thank you for the gift of Baptism, that makes us part of your great family.
