Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection A Prayer for Assumption-tide Holy Spirit, Giver of Life, Who didst overshadow Mary that she might become the Mother of Jesus, our Saviour, do thou likewise work silently within my heart to form within me the fullness of his redeemed and redeeming humanity. Give me his loving heart to burn with love for God and love for others, give me a share in his joy and his sorrow, his weakness and his strength, his labour for the world's salvation. May Mary, blessed among women, Mother of our Saviour, pray for me, that Christ may be formed in me, that I may live in union of heart and will with Jesus Christ, her Son, our Lord and Saviour. Amen. INTROIT Let us all rejoice in the Lord our God, as we celebrate a feast day in honour of the Virgin Mary: because of whose solemnity the angels are jubilant and sing praises to the Son of God. Gaudeamus (Mode I)
SOLEMN PROCESSION
During the solemn procession the following hymn will be sung. A station will be made at the Lady Altar, during which the versicle and response below will be sung.
HYMN 188 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Ye Who Own the Faith of Jesus Ye who own the faith of Jesus, sing the wonders that were done when the love of God the Father o’er our sin the victory won, when he made the Virgin Mary mother of his only Son. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace.

Blessed were the chosen people out of whom the Lord did come; blessed was the land of promise fashioned for his earthly home; but more blessed far the mother, she who bare him in her womb. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. Wherefore let all faithful people tell the honor of her name; let the Church, in her foreshadowed, part in her thanksgiving claim; what Christ's mother sang in gladness let Christ's people sing the same. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. Let us weave our supplications, she with us and we with her, for the advancement of the faithful, for each faithful worshipper, for the doubting, for the sinful, for each heedless wanderer. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. May the Mother's intercessions on our homes a blessing win, that the children all be prospered, strong and fair and pure within, following our Lord's own footsteps, firm in faith and free from sin. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. For the sick and the aged, for our dear ones far away, for the hearts that mourn in secret, all who need our prayers today, for the faithful gone before us, may the holy Virgin pray. Hail Mary, hail Mary, hail Mary, full of grace. HIGH MASS | 7

Be seated
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good." Isaiah 7:10-15

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians. When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spiritof his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever." Luke 1:46-55

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this holy communion may worthily receive the most precious body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace + and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honour and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY “Christianity and Politics shouldn't mix” is an often-heard mantra, certainly in the UK. “Religion is private and personal, and should keep itself to itself.” But is it as simple and straightforward as that? Of course, no religion, as indeed no ideology, should have a definitive role in political affairs: the history of Christendom as of communism, and the current manifestations of Islamic extremism in the Middle East and Africa, point clearly to the dangers such a system presents. However, if we look at the Bible we find that God has always had a concern for political affairs, for justice, for the poor and oppressed, for a fair ordering of society. The Ten Commandments indeed place God as the priority, “I am the Lord your God, ...” but they go on to deal with right relationships in community: with parents; with behaviour towards neighbours: no false witness, no murder or adultery, no theft. King Solomon prays for the gift of wisdom to rule fairly; the Prophets cry out for justice at the city gate. Jesus echoes this tradition in the Sermon on the Mount and in the Summary of the Law: “Love the Lord your God; love your neighbour as yourself.”
In recent times the Papacy has published encyclicals on social justice from a Christian perspective, and at the last UK General Election the Church of England Bishops issued a document highlighting social issues its members should reflect upon when deciding how to vote. In Canada the Anglican Church has had a significant input in the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
All of this is why we should pray for all involved in the current Federal Election Campaign, for our municipal authorities, and for the work of such community organisations as the Metro Vancouver Alliance, and why the Church, its bishops and its members, should ask pertinent questions about the ordering of our society.

KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. And Mary said: "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me -- holy is his name." Luke 1:46-49 (NIV) Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the day tradition tells us that Mary died, and was taken straightaway to the glory and the joy of heaven. God had done great things for Mary in choosing her to be the mother of his Son, and in response to her faithfulness and obedience he also does great things for her when she dies: he grants her immediately a full share in the resurrection life. The Bible tells us at the beginning of St Luke’s Gospel that after the angel appeared to Mary telling her that she was to be the mother of the Savior of the world, she hurried to the home of her cousin Elizabeth. She just couldn't wait to tell someone. When Elizabeth heard the news, she exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!" Mary was so happy that she broke into joyful praise to God and, even though she probably didn't actually sing, her words have come to be known as "Mary's Song" and have been set to music by many composers. This is what Mary said:
"My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name." Let us join Mary in praise to God for he has done great things for us. Spend a few moments thinking about all the wonderful gifts God has given you: life, family, friends; above all, the gift of love, his only begotten Son, that we might have eternal life. Father, we are thankful for all your gifts to us, especially the gift of love in Jesus your Son. Help us to rejoice with Mary for the great things you have done for us, and, like Mary, to share the Good News with those we love. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Adapted from www.sermons4kids.com

COMMEMORATION John Stuart Priest, Missionary among the Mohawks, 1811 August 17
Today we honour the life and labours of John Stuart, Anglican missionary among the Mohawks and the first resident priest in Upper Canada, who died in 1811. Stuart was born in Pennsylvania and raised a Presbyterian, but entered the Church of England while at college and was ordained to the Anglican priesthood in 1770. The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel assigned him to its mission in northern New York, where he quickly won the trust and affection of the Mohawk people. Six years later he and his native flock were overtaken by the American Revolution, and Stuart had a large part in keeping the Mohawks loyal to the British Crown. As a result he suffered many indignities at the hands of the rebels and in 1781 he fled to Canada with his family. Four years later he settled at Kingston, because he was chaplain to the regiment stationed there and it was near a band of loyalist Mohawks. In due course he also became rector of the Anglican parish in Kingston, though for many years, as the only priest in Upper Canada, his pastoral responsibilities extended as far west as Niagara. Even after other Anglican priests came into the province, Stuart still rode a circuit of two hundred miles several times a year, ministering the gospel among the Mohawks and in the scattered Loyalist settlements round about. His preaching was plain and, as the saying goes, straight from the heart; and he was ready to celebrate in the roughest conditions when he saw that the people truly desired the Word of God and the sacraments of the Church. He once wrote that all he wanted was “to lead a good life, preach sound doctrine, and to be industrious and zealous in the discharge of the functions of an honest and upright clergyman.” He more than surpassed this modest ambition, so that today we may join his contemporaries in hailing John Stuart as “the father of the Episcopal Church in Upper Canada.” For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994

COMMEMORATION St. Bernard Abbot of Clairvaux, Teacher of the Faith, 1153 August 20
Bernard was the twelfth-century abbot of Clairvaux, a French monastery which under his leadership became a centre of the spiritual revival known as the Cistercian movement. Bernard came from a noble family famous for its military prowess, but at the age of twenty-two he underwent a conversion to the monastic life and entered the newly founded Cistercian order. He channelled all the energy, aggressiveness, and brilliance of his warrior heritage into love for God, care for the mystical tradition of the Church, and preaching; and for the next forty years Bernard’s eloquent voice dominated the western Church as his sermons and treatises renewed the theology of the spiritual life which it had received from the ancient Latin Fathers. His prestige as spiritual teacher also gave him enormous authority when it came to shaping the policies of the Church; his endorsement ensured that one candidate in a papal election triumphed over the other who had been favoured to win; and Bernard’s preaching throughout France in 1147 brought about a massive popular response to the Pope’s call for a second crusade against the Muslims. Thus, even as he was committed to monastic separation from the world, Bernard of Clairvaux had tremendous influence on the life and imagination of twelfth-century Europe; and we honour him today because he used that influence to renew in his own age the ageless thirst for that love which is above all other loves, which God “has poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994
