Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.

The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Joseph’s Lullaby Sleep now, little one. I will watch while you and your mother sleep. I wish I could do more. This straw is not good enough for you. Back in Nazareth I'll make a proper bed for you of seasoned wood, smooth, strong, well‑pegged. A bed fit for a carpenter's son. Just wait till we get back to Nazareth. I'll teach you everything I know. You'll learn to choose the cedarwood, eucalyptus, and fir. You'll learn to use the drawshave, ax, and saw. Your arms will grow strong, your hands rough ‑‑ like these. You will bear the pungent smell of new wood and wear shavings and sawdust in your hair. You'll be a man whose life centers on hammer and nails and wood. But for now, sleep, little Jesus, sleep. Ron Klug 20th century

The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Isaiah. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. Isaiah 61:10-62:3

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians. When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. HOLY GOSPEL

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, Jesus' parents brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord"), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." And the child's father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, "This child is destined for the falling and the rising HIGH MASS | 11

of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed and a sword will pierce your own soul too." There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him. Luke 2:22-40

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. Because thou didst give Jesus Christ thine only Son to be born at this time for us; who, by the operation of the Holy Spirit, was made very man of the substance of the Virgin Mary his mother; and that without spot of sin, to make us clean from all sin. All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES “What happens when we say to Jesus Christ, “I want to see Christmas through your eyes”? Who knew that Gloria Estefan has provided for us a prayer petition almost as significant as the Jesus Prayer! As I made this prayer during Advent I found myself reading the Gospel account of Christmas with fresh vision: Having existed always, Jesus Christ – the Logos – entered time and space. Jesus is born into poverty – Joseph and Mary offer the poor persons’ sacrifice in the Temple of two doves. Jesus is born into homelessness – no room at the inn leads to a stable. Jesus is the illegitimate child of a teenage pregnancy in a backwater province of the Roman Empire. Visited and adored by locals – uncouth and aromatic shepherds – and foreigners – the Magi – the life of Jesus began as it ended, in jeopardy. He was born as he died, his life was condemned. The worship which Herod desired to offer was not that of the shepherds, nor the Magi. Jesus became a refugee. His family and supporters helped him flee to safety, in Egypt. An angel sounded the all-clear and the Holy Family returned to their home in Nazareth. If poverty, homelessness, illegitimacy, adoration,

condemnation and becoming a refugee are the facts of the Nativity of Jesus, what then is our response? How do we faithfully celebrate the Feast of the Nativity? Jesus Christ – -became poor so that we might enjoy the treasures of abundant life (Jn 10.10); -became homeless so that we might find our true home with Christ (Rev 22.13); -was illegitimate so that we might become the righteousness of God (Cor 5.1); -was adored by outcasts and foreigners so that we might be assured of salvation (Mt 25.40); -was condemned by the powerful so that we might be emboldened when condemned (Mk 15.1-15); -fled as a refugee so that we might be inspired to serve those who flee for their lives (Mt 5.10-12). How does Jesus Christ recognize himself in our gift-giving? Who is served through all our spending? How will Jesus be glorified in our eating and drinking at this season? Whom do we include and exclude? How are we welcoming Jesus Christ into our lives through our frenetic seasonal preparations?

Inform. Inspire. Invite.

RENEWING OUR BUILDING FABRIC Roof Revolution have made excellent progress with the urgently needed repairs to the church roofs: •The Welsh slates have been cleaned to their original condition, seams repaired, and damaged slates replaced •The flat roofs have been cleaned out and refurbished. •The drains have been cleared and checked. •Rotten wood in the bell tower ventilators has been replaced, as also a small number of boards damaged by water penetration on the floor of the bell tower •The outer walls have been cleaned and repaired. This phase of work will also include cleaning off and applying anti-corrosion paint to the steel crib supporting our superb bells. The bell crib will be strapped with steel to the robust reinforced concrete bell tower inner frame structure. The work has been based on reports from a professional engineer – especially important to assure the stability of the reinforced concrete structure of the church, bell tower, and bell frame. The work has been conducted according to all relevant City of Vancouver by-laws and under the oversight of our Project Advisor for all repairs and renewal of the church buildings, Tom Fletcher. Once the weather is appropriate next year, Roof Revolution will apply a protective coating – retaining the original appearance – to the slate bell tower roof. At that time they will seal the outer church fabric – and if funds permit – clean and re-surface the church interior proper. This work will renew the church as a remarkably significant part of the patrimony of Vancouver, and especially the Downtown Eastside.

In conjunction with our planned improvements to the Rectory, Hall and Crypt, these repairs will assure St. James’ continued, and even expanded, service to the Diocese and this community as a place of worship and practical nurture. Rhodri Windsor-Liscombe

To contribute to this “purse,” you can add some money or a cheque to your Sunday offering envelope. Write clearly on the envelope the amount you are designating for the “purse.” You can also drop cash or a cheque off to the church office. Please make your contributions by Sunday, January 4th, so that there is time for the Envelope Secretary to record and compile them before Fr. Mark’s last Sunday, which is January 11th. MOTHER ALEXIS ON LEAVE Mother Alexis is on leave for the month of December, so will not be responding to emails or phone calls during this time. Christmas, is recognized as the Feast of the Holy Family. It is a time to celebrate that when Jesus was born he was part of a family unit – the Word becoming flesh includes taking on the joys and struggles of family. Jesus’ parents were poor, had to flee their hometown for safety, and most likely became outcasts when Mary became pregnant. God knows the joys and pains that we experience in family because He himself lived through them and His healing power covers families.

PARENTS: Discuss with your children the significance of Jesus being born into a family and some of the hard times that Jesus experienced when he was young. Ask your child(ren) what are their favorite parts of being a family, and what is hardest. Encourage your child(ren) to pray that Jesus brings healing to broken relationships and blesses the family. Please let Jenny know of your needs and wishes for faith education for your children so that you all may grow together in faith. Thank you so much! COMMEMORATION The Holy Innocents December 28

The story of the Holy Innocents is found in the Gospel according to Matthew, and it is the story of an atrocity. Herod the Great was titled “king of the Jews,” but he held his throne at the pleasure of the Roman emperor. The precariousness of his power made him all the more ruthless in defending it. Thus, when he learned that the Christ, the true king of the Jews, had been born at Bethlehem, Herod wanted to do away with him. But he did not know the exact identity of the child, so he sent his troops to slaughter all the infants of Bethlehem on the chance that one of the victims would be the Christ-child. The murdered infants never had an opportunity to know Jesus or to confess him in their own right. But they all died for the sake of Christ, and Herod’s atrocity sealed the name of Christ on each one of them. The Holy Innocents are therefore considered the prototype of all Christian martyrs. The Holy Innocents may also be considered the patron saints of our own age. For we live in an age of atrocities, in a time infamous for the slaughter of innocent bystanders who never chose the causes for which they have been made to die. By celebrating this feast, we perform an office for the Holy Innocents and all other victims of massacre. We become their voice and cry out for God to remember the slaughtered — and to remember them for the sake of Christ, himself the great Innocent who was crucified by “the rulers of this age.” For All the Saints, Prayers and Readings for Saint’s Days, ABC, 1994

COMMEMORATION St. Thomas Becket Archbishop of Canterbury, Martyr, 1170 December 29 Today we remember Thomas Becket, a twelfth-century archbishop of Canterbury who was murdered within his own cathedral because he resisted the will of King Henry II. Becket’s fate was all the more tragic because he had been a bosom friend of the king as well as his chief adviser. Henry had been trying to curb the privileges of the Church in England, so he arranged for Becket to be elected archbishop of Canterbury in 1162 as a way of ensuring its cooperation with his policies. But he was bitterly disappointed when Thomas changed his allegiance and became a stiffnecked defender of the Church’s rights. One thing led to another, and within two years the new archbishop felt he had no choice but to flee England and become an exile in France. Both men appealed to the Pope, who patched together an agreement which satisfied neither party but at least allowed Thomas to return from exile in December of 1170. The archbishop was greeted by cheering crowds all along his route back to Canterbury, but in a sermon on Christmas Day he foretold that his blood would be shed. Reports are confused but it seems that, a day or two later, King Henry became drunk and cried out, “Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?” Four barons took him at his word and rode to Canterbury. On the afternoon of December twenty-ninth they strode into Becket’s chambers and demanded satisfaction; when he refused to heed their ultimatum they left, but returned a short while later with murder in their hearts. They broke into the cathedral and found Becket standing before one of the side altars. An angry exchange ended with one of the barons swinging his sword and slicing into the archbishop’s head. As Thomas collapsed he said, “I accept death for the Name of Jesus and his Church.” All four barons then fell upon him with their swords and finished him off.
