Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection The Gospel is hard, and it contains within it, not the fear but the absolute certainty, that persecution and misunderstanding will always follow in its wake. It is based on the idea of dying in order to live; of losing life in order to find it; of taking up the cross, that instrument of torture, and finding therein not merely life but glory…. Yes, the Arab Spring is the Christian Winter because there is no truth or reconciliation apparently at work in Israel-Palestine, nor in Iraq, nor in Syria… But the Christian writings, beginning as they do with a refugee mother and baby surrounded by invading armies, and ending with world conflict, the utter destruction of Jerusalem, and the coming of apocalyptic death and plague, are not comfortable. The paradox is that growing or shrinking numbers do not tell you anything. The Gospel would still be true even if no one believed it. The hopeful thing is that, where it is tried – where it is imperfectly and hesitantly followed – as it was in Northern Ireland during the peace process, as it is in many a Salvation Army hostel this Christmas, as it flickers in countless unseen Christian lives, it works. And its palpable and remarkable power to transform human life takes us to the position of believing that something very wonderful indeed began with the birth of Christ into the world. A.N. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader

Be seated

A reading from the Book of Isaiah. I will recount the gracious deeds of the LORD, the praiseworthy acts of the LORD, because of all that the LORD has done for us, and the great favour to the house of Israel that he has shown them according to his mercy, according to the abundance of his steadfast love. For he said, ‘Surely they are my people, children who will not deal falsely’; and he became their saviour in all their distress. It was no messenger or angel but his presence that saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights. Praise him, all you angels of his; praise him, all his host. Young men and maidens, old and young together. Antiphon Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name only is exalted, his splendour is over earth and heaven. He has raised up strength for his people and praise for all his loyal servants, the children of Israel, a people who are near him. Antiphon Psalm 148:1-2, 12-14

EPISTLE READING Sub-deacon

A reading from the Letter to the Hebrews. It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, saying, "I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you." And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I and the children whom God has given me." Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of

All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels

Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, "Out of Egypt I have called my son." When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned HIGH MASS | 11

from the wise men. Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah: "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they are no more." When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child's life are dead." Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And after being warned in a dream, he went away to the district of Galilee. There he made his home in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, "He will be called a Nazorean." Matthew 2:13-23

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible RECTOR’S NOTES What difference does it make whether or not we celebrate the Nativity of Jesus Christ? The Nativity takes us to the epicenter of the mystery of the Incarnation. How have you changed in the last year since celebrating the mystery of the Incarnation through the Nativity? What fruits will be borne in your life in the year to come through your participation in these mysteries? “I come from prayer, in which asking myself for what cause we are in this world, I have learnt that we are in it only to receive and carry the sweet Jesus, on our tongue by announcing him, in our arms by doing good works, on our shoulders by bearing his yoke, his drynesses and sterilities, and thus in our interior and exterior senses. O how blessed are they that carry him sweetly and constantly!” These are the words of Francis de Sales, Bishop of Geneva and spiritual writer, in a letter to Jane Frances de Chantal (Letter 8, Nov. 16, 1605).

“We are each to build a holy house – a life – inside which Jesus and his family can dwell,” writes Mother Hilary, the Guardian of the Order of Julian of Norwich. She continues, “in the course of the construction process we are at one and the same time receiving, offering and becoming the radical hospitality of God… And come what may, God protects our labors and safeguards the image of himself that is coming to birth in us.” (Julian’s Window. Volume V. December 2013. No.4.)

QUOTE OF THIS WEEK Muslims need protection in the Balkans, the Kurds in Iraq or indigenous communities in the Americas or Australia, why not Christians in the Middle East and beyond? Such protection need not always be military or undertaken through the threat of economic sanction. It can often be achieved simply through raising awareness of the situation in which these communities find themselves. It can also be provided through advocacy and campaigning as well as diplomacy and negotiation. SAINTS THIS WEEK The Naming and Circumcision of Jesus January 1

The celebration of this scriptural festival marks three events: first, the naming of the infant Jesus; secondly, the performance of the rite of circumcision as a sign of the covenant between God and Abraham “and his children for ever” – thus Christ’s keeping of the Law; thirdly and traditionally, it is honoured as the first shedding of the Christ’s blood. The name Jesus means literally “Yahweh saves.” Theologically, it may be linked to the question asked by Moses of God: “What is your name?” “I am who I am” was the reply; hence the significance of Jesus’ own words: “Before Abraham was, I am.” The feast has been observed in the church since at least the sixth century. Gregory of Nazianzus, Bishop of Constantinople

SAINTS THIS WEEK SS. Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea, and Gregory of Nazianzus, Bishop of Constantinople Teachers of the Faith, 379, 389 January 2 Basil the Great and Gregory of Nazianzus were holy bishops and influential teachers in the fourth-century Church. We remember them together because they were close friends from their youth, bound by a common desire for perfection as Christians and a firm commitment to orthodox teaching. Their characters were very different: Basil had a forceful, outgoing personality which was nourished by the company of others, while Gregory was plagued by self-doubts and preferred to live in scholarly retirement. Basil eventually became the bishop of Caesarea, a large city in Asia Minor, and the leader of the orthodox party in his district. The opponents of orthodoxy pressed him on every side, so he began to push his friends into offices where they could support their common cause. He compelled Gregory to become the bishop of a small rural diocese, and his handling of the situation led to a breach between them, which lasted until Basil’s death in the year 379. Nevertheless, twelve months later, Gregory came out of retirement to aid the Church in one of its most difficult times. He eventually served as the bishop of Constantinople. Basil and Gregory were convinced that the Nicene Creed was the only solid basis for understanding the Christian faith. Many others questioned the Creed, especially its affirmation that “Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,” is “of one being with the Father.” They did not understand why the Church had to say that Christ is God. Basil and Gregory by their clear thinking and passionate eloquence showed that this one statement was the foundation of the Church’s belief in Jesus as the fullness of salvation. Their labours paved the way for the triumph of orthodox teaching at the First Council of Constantinople; and this Council, held in the year 381, ratified the version of the Nicene Creed that we use to this day.
