Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church.
The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

Reflection THE HOLY NAME O LORD GOD, whose gifts are beyond count or measure or price, and every gift high honour; of all, this would be chief, that thou, O Lord, wouldest write thy Name and grave it on my inmost soul unknown, unseen, unfelt by me, yet readable, for thy sole glory, by the eyes of men,: so that it testify in quietness to the lowly devotion of my heart, the dedication of my whole being, the pure joy of faith. To thy Name, Lord Jesus, help me bow the knee and all its worshipping, bow the head and all its thinking, bow the will and all its choosing, bow the heart and all its loving. But chiefest, O my GOD, write thy Name upon me, in me, thy holiness, thy lordship, thy love, in shining letters, indelible, for ever. My God My Glory, Eric Milner-White, SPCK, 1967, London

470 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — To the Name that Brings Salvation To the name that brings salvation, praise and honour let us pay, which for many a generation hid in God's foreknowledge lay; but to every tongue and nation Holy Church proclaims today. Jesus—be that name our treasure, name beyond what words can tell; name of gladness, name of pleasure, ear and heart delighting well; name of sweetness, passing measure, freeing souls from sin’s dark spell. 6 | HIGH MASS
Name that calls for adoration, name that speaks of victory, name for grateful meditation in the vale of misery, name for loving veneration by the citizens on high. Name that whosoever preaches makes sweet music to the ear; who in prayer this Name beseeches finds divinest comfort near; joyful then the heart that reaches to embrace that name so dear. Name by hard-won right exalted over every other name; and when man was sore assaulted put the enemy to shame: strength to them that else had halted, sight to blind, and health to lame. Jesu, we thy name adoring, long to see thee as thou art: of thy clemency imploring so to write it in our heart, that hereafter, upward soaring, we with angels may have part. Where thou reignest with the Father, thou the everlasting Son, where with the eternal Spirit, threefold God, yet ever one, may our eyes behold the splendour when our earthly course is done.

O Lord our Governor, how exalted is your Name in all the world! Out of the mouths of infants and children your majesty is praised above the heavens. Antiphon You have made him but little lower than the angels; you adorn him with glory and honour; You give him mastery over the works of your hands; you put all things under his feet. EPISTLE READING Reader
A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to thee, O Lord.
Deacon People
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us." So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. Luke 2:15-21 The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

HYMN 29 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — It Came Upon the Midnight Clear It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, good will to men, from heaven's all gracious King!" The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled; and still their heavenly music floats o'er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing; and ever o'er its Babel-sounds the blessèd angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long; beneath the angel-strain have rolled two thousand years of wrong; and man, at war with man, hears not the love-song which they bring; O hush the noise, ye men of strife, and hear the angels sing! For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophet bards foretold, when with the ever-circling years comes round the age of gold; when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling, and the whole world give back the song which now the angels sing. 26 | HIGH MASS

RECONCILIATION FEAST 2017 As part of the ongoing mandate to forge a new relationship between the Church and Aboriginal Peoples, in mid-2017 St. James’ Church will hold a Reconciliation Feast, to honour survivors of the Indian Residential Schools. In the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action, this will be one step in seeking to live out a new and mutual relationship together. Survivors and parishioners both will be invited to sit at the table together. Two themes will be explored: First and primarily, we will honour the strength, resilience, courage, and dignity of Residential School survivors. Secondly, we will celebrate the upcoming generation of aboriginal leaders who have received their cultural heritage from generations of survivors, and whose own lives now embody and carry these traditions forward.
As far as we know, the event will be the first of its kind in Canada. Our hope is that it will provide one example of what reconciliation can actually look like, for other parishes also seeking to take practical steps forward. And to that end it will be documented by video. We have applied for funding to a number of sources. The national Church’s Anglican Healing Fund has endorsed the project with a grant towards our costs. Parish members interested in volunteering for this work should contact Pat McSherry or Fr. Matthew for more information. Your financial contribution is also welcome. Cheques may be made out to “St James Church” with the words “Reconciliation Feast” on the memo line. This project is made possible through the joint efforts of St. James’ Church and the Street Outreach Initiative. Fr Matthew KIDS’ CORNER Happy New Year Everybody. Let's pray that this year we will have peace on earth, that every person in our community and our world has a home and food and love. Let us all pray for our families, friends, and neighbours that all will be well. And also let us remember to be so very thankful for all we have in our lives. Amen. Spread the Love everyone!

COMMEMORATION SS. Basil the Great, Bishop of Caeserea, and Gregory of Nazianzus, Bishop of Constantinople Teachers of the Faith, 379, 389 January 2
Basil the Great and Gregory of Nazianzus were holy bishops and influential teachers in the fourth-century Church. We remember them together because they were close friends from their youth, bound by a common desire for perfection as Christians and a firm commitment to orthodox teaching. Their characters were very different: Basil had a forceful, outgoing personality which was nourished by the company of others, while Gregory was plagued by self-doubts and preferred to live in scholarly retirement. Basil eventually became the bishop of Caesarea, a large city in Asia Minor, and the leader of the orthodox party in his district. The opponents of orthodoxy pressed him on every side, so he began to push his friends into offices where they could support their common cause. He compelled Gregory to become the bishop of a small rural diocese, and his handling of the situation led to a breach between them, which lasted until Basil’s death in the year 379. Nevertheless, twelve months later, Gregory came out of retirement to aid the Church in one of its most difficult times. He eventually served as the bishop of Constantinople. Basil and Gregory were convinced that the Nicene Creed was the only solid basis for understanding the Christian faith. Many others questioned the Creed, especially its affirmation that “Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,” is “of one being with the Father.” They did not understand why the Church had to say that Christ is God. Basil and Gregory by their clear thinking and passionate eloquence showed that this one statement was the foundation of the Church’s belief in Jesus as the fullness of salvation. Their labours paved the way for the triumph of orthodox teaching at the First Council of Constantinople; and this Council, held in the year 381, ratified the version of the Nicene Creed that we use to this day. COMMEMORATION St. Andre Bessette Religious, 1937 January 5 Sickness and weakness dogged André from birth. He was the eighth of 12 children born to a French Canadian couple near Montreal. Adopted at 12, when both parents had died, he became a farmhand. Various trades followed: shoemaker, baker, blacksmith — all failures. He was a factory worker in the United States during the boom times of the Civil War. At 25, he applied for entrance into the Congregation of the Holy Cross. After a year’s novitiate, he was not admitted because of his weak health. But with an extension and the urging of Bishop Bourget, he was finally received. He was given the humble job of doorkeeper at Notre Dame College in Montreal, with additional duties as sacristan, laundry worker and messenger. “When I joined this community, the superiors showed me the door, and I remained 40 years.” In his little room near the door, he spent much of the night on his knees. On his windowsill, facing Mount Royal, was a small statue of St. Joseph, to whom he had been devoted since childhood. When asked about it he said, “Someday, St. Joseph is going to be honored in a very special way on Mount Royal!” When he heard someone was ill, he visited to bring cheer and to pray with the sick person. He would rub the sick person lightly with oil taken from a lamp burning in the college chapel. Word of healing powers began to spread. When an epidemic broke out at a nearby college, André volunteered to nurse. Not one person died. The trickle of sick people to his door became a flood. His superiors were uneasy; diocesan authorities were suspicious; doctors called him a quack. “I do not cure,” he said again and again. “St. Joseph cures.” In the end he needed four secretaries to handle the 80,000 letters he received each year. For many years the Holy Cross authorities had tried to buy land on Mount Royal. Brother André and others climbed the steep hill and planted medals of St. Joseph. Suddenly, the owners yielded. André collected 200 dollars to build a small chapel and began receiving visitors there — smiling through long hours of listening, applying St. Joseph’s oil. Some were cured, some not. The pile of crutches, canes and braces grew. The chapel also grew. By 1931 there were gleaming walls, but money ran out. “Put a statue of St. Joseph in the middle. If he wants a roof over his head, he’ll get it.” The magnificent Oratory on Mount Royal took 50 years to build. The sickly boy who could not hold a job died at 92. He is buried at the Oratory. http://www.americancatholic.org/features/saints/saint.aspx?id=1252 THE THURIBLE | 23 21 33
