There is a play area with toys and colouring books at the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection Glory to you, O Lord our God, Your love calls us to be your people. By sharing our many and diverse gifts we share in your mission. We ask you, Lord, to shape us into a community of faith. Nourish us by your word and sacraments that we may grow into the image of Jesus. Through the power of your Holy Spirit, heal us that we, in turn, may heal the wounded. Form us to be instruments of love, justice, and peace in our land, and send us to proclaim your saving work. Renew us, Lord, that we may renew the face of the earth. Amen.

Blessed are they that dwell in thy house. They will always be praising thee. Let us pray. O God our heavenly Father, make the door of our parish church wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship and a Father’s care, and narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride, and uncharitableness. Here may the tempted find succour, and the sorrowing receive comfort; here may the careless be awakened to repentance, and the penitent be assured of thy mercy; and here may all thy children renew their strength in thee and go on their way rejoicing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
PROCESSIONAL HYMN 204 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Blessed City, heavenly Salem, v. 1-4 Blessed city, heavenly Salem, vision dear of peace and love, who, of living stones upbuilded, art the joy of heaven above, and, with angel cohorts circled, as a bride to earth dost move! From celestial realms descending, bridal glory round her shed, to his presence, decked with jewels, by her Lord shall she be led: all her streets, and all her bulwarks, of pure gold are fashionèd. Bright with pearls her portals glitter, they are open evermore; and, by virtue of his merits, thither faithful souls may soar, who for Christ's dear name in this world pain and tribulation bore.
Many a blow and biting sculpture fashioned well those stones elect, in their places now compacted by the heavenly Architect, who therewith hath willed for ever that his palace should be decked.

205 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Christ is made the sure foundation, v. 1, 3 & 4 Christ is made the sure foundation, and the precious corner-stone, who, the two walls underlying, bound in each, binds both in one, Holy Sion’s help for ever, and her confidence alone. To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of hosts, today; with thy wonted loving-kindness, hear thy people as they pray, and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls for ay.
Here vouchsafe to all thy servants gifts of grace by prayer to gain; here to have and hold for ever, those good things their prayers obtain, and hereafter, in thy glory, with thy blessèd ones to reign.

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader
Be seated A reading from the Book of Genesis. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, ‘I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’ Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!’ And he was afraid, and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.’ So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. Genesis 28:11-18

PSALM
A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.
I was glad when they said to me, Let us go to the house of the Lord.” Now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is built as a city that is at unity with itself. Antiphon To which the tribes go up the tribes of the Lord, the assembly of Israel, to praise the name of the Lord. For there are the thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ”May they prosper who love you. Antiphon Peace be within your walls and quietness within your towers. For my brethren and companions’ sake, I pray for your prosperity. Because of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek to do you good.” Psalm 122
SECOND READING Reader
A reading from the First Letter of Peter. Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: ‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’ To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner’, and ‘A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.’ They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. HIGH MASS | 11
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:1-10

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, ‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.’ Jesus answered, ‘I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. Heaven itself cannot contain thee, and thy glory fills all the world. Thou dost accept our setting apart of places for thy worship, and in them pour out thy gifts of grace upon thy faithful people. This table is a sign to us of the heavenly altar, where thy saints and angels praise thee. Here we have recalled the sacrifice of thy Son; here we have been fed with the body and blood of thy Son; here our sins have been forgiven; here we have tasted the joys of thy eternal kingdom. Grant that in these mysteries we may be united with one another and strengthened for service in thy world. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY But he would withdraw to deserted places and pray. (Luke5:16). This coming week your clergy will be heading on retreat to pray, think, listen, dream and scheme about what we are doing here at St. James'. Where is God calling us? How do we serve within our parish and care for our people each day? Getting away to ponder and reflect, gives us the opportunity to think without being distracted. Have you been on a retreat this year? Is there a place where you go to recharge, reflect, and be with God? Retreat time is not only for clergy. Going on retreat gives us the opportunity to rest spiritually. That might sound weird, but faking spiritual health is nearly impossible. We all need to be recharged sometimes, and after all Jesus said "come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28) Life moves at a quick pace. Have you ever heard someone say, "the older I get, the quicker the time
seems to go!" I have. I've also heard people state that they don't have time to go on retreat. There are too many things to do. The idea of going somewhere to do "nothing" (as in stop doing everything at high speed!) and be still, is foreign to lots of people, but the benefits far outweigh the time spent. In our daily prayer we may ask things of God. We may hear answers, but taking a retreat means that you have more time to dwell on these things, or as Fr. Matthew might say, to brood! Disconnecting and spending time in prayer grounds us in our faith as Christ's disciples. At my ordination to the priesthood Archbishop Melissa said during her sermon, "be faithful to the many vows you will make today, for faithfulness is the bedrock of your stability in God...at the same time remember to attend to your ongoing discernment, for through this God refreshes and renews you, and the people you serve." Hopefully when we return at the end of next week we will be refreshed and renewed, ready to
Inform. Inspire. Invite.
