Welcome We acknowledge our presence on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available.

Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the Church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the Church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit, and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the Cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness, and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

A Reflection For the full development of each one’s potentialities a flexible yet definite structure is needed to maintain the space for living together. You can’t have a body without a skeleton, or a river without banks to guide its stream. Keep wholeheartedly to the arrangements that have been agreed: then people will never rely on you in vain and you will be able to put all your trust in others. In obedience to each other and to the Gospel you will discover the interior freedom that makes you capable of comprehending the world’s needs-without identifying in a shallow way with special groups and causes-and of entering them into yourself. Man’s freedom is being threatened more than ever. Set yourself against everything that oppresses man. Free yourself from a world that seeks only pleasures and possessions and bring others to share your freedom. Set yourself against everything that makes men slaves politically, economically, socially. You have nothing to lose. No doubt you will have noticed that man’s fundamental bondage is to sin, to his short-sighted attachment to himself. Through your radical surrender to God you will be freed from this and become a deliverer of other men, a breath of fresh air for those you meet, a servant of all, a source of life, expectation and hope. -from Rule for a New Brother, Benedictine Priory - Regina Pacis, Great Britain: Anchor Press, 1973. 4 | HIGH MASS

Blessed are they that dwell in thy house. They will always be praising thee. Let us pray. O God our heavenly Father, make the door of our parish church wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship and a Father’s care, and narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride, and uncharitableness. Here may the tempted find succour, and the sorrowing receive comfort; here may the careless be awakened to repentance, and the penitent be assured of thy mercy; and here may all thy children renew their strength in thee and go on their way rejoicing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PROCESSIONAL HYMN 204 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) — Blessed City, heavenly Salem, v. 1-4 205 Green Hymn Book (New English Hymnal) - Christ is made the sure foundation, v. 1, 3 & 4 Blessed city, heavenly Salem, vision dear of peace and love, who, of living stones upbuilded, art the joy of heaven above, and, with angel cohorts circled, as a bride to earth dost move; From celestial realms descending, bridal glory round her shed, to his presence, decked with jewels, by her Lord shall she be led: all her streets, and all her bulwarks, of pure gold are fashioned. Bright with pearls her portals glitter, they are open evermore; and, by virtue of his merits, thither faithful souls may soar, who for Christ's dear name in this world pain and tribulation bore. Many a blow and biting sculpture fashioned well those stones elect, in their places now compacted by the heavenly Architect, who, therewith hath willed for ever that his palace should be decked.

Christ is made the sure foundation, and the precious corner-stone, who, the two walls underlying, bound in each, binds both in one, Holy Sion’s help for ever, and her confidence alone. To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of Hosts, today; with thy wonted loving-kindness hear thy servants as they pray, and thy fullest benediction shed within its walls for ay. Here vouchsafe to all thy servants gifts of grace by prayer to gain; here to have and hold for ever, those good things their prayers obtain, and hereafter, in thy glory, with thy blessed ones to reign

The Liturgy of the Word FIRST READING Reader

Be seated A reading from the Revelation to John. Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, ‘Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.’ And in the spirit he carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. It has the glory of God and a radiance like a very rare jewel, like jasper, clear as crystal. It has a great, high wall with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates are inscribed the names of the twelve tribes of the Israelites; on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city has twelve foundations, and on them are the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. Revelation 21:9-14

PSALM

A cantor sings the antiphon first; the people repeat it thereafter.

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” Now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem. Antiphon Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls and quietness within your towers. Antiphon Psalm 122:1-2, 6-7

SECOND READING Reader

A reading from the First Letter of Peter. Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: ‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’ To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner’, and ‘A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.’ They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:1-10

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, ‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.’ Jesus answered, ‘I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. Your heralds brought glad tidings to greatest as to least; they bade them rise, and hasten to share the great King's feast; and this was all their teaching, in every deed and word, to all alike proclaiming one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

HIGH MASS | 17

When shadows thickly falling, engulfed the world in night, you summoned forth your servants, your messengers of light. On them and on your people your plenteous grace was poured, and this was still their message, one Church, one Faith, one Lord. And we, shall we be faithless? shall hearts fail, hands hang down? shall we evade the struggle, and cast away the crown? Not so: in God's deep counsels some better gift is stored; the covenant of promise, one Church, one Faith, one Lord. Your mercy will not fail us, nor leave your work undone; with your right hand to help us, your people shall be one; and then, by all creation, your name shall be adored, and this shall be their anthem: one Church, one Faith, one Lord.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto thee: O Lord holy, Father almighty, everlasting God: creator and preserver of all things. Heaven itself cannot contain thee, and thy glory fills all the world. Thou dost accept our setting apart of places for thy worship, and in them pour out thy gifts of grace upon thy faithful people. This table is a sign to us of the heavenly altar, where thy saints and angels praise thee. Here we have recalled the sacrifice of thy Son; here we have been fed with the body and blood of thy son; here our sins have been forgiven; here we have tasted the joys of thy eternal kingdom. Grant that in these mysteries we may be united with one another and strengthened for service in thy world. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name; evermore praising thee and saying:

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

The Thurible NOTES FROM THE CLERGY Last Saturday's Parish Council was well supported, with some 40+ members of St. James' present. Annie Grant and Doug Ibbot took up their new roles of Chair and Secretary respectively, and we were helped in our conversations by facilitator Maureen Simons from the Diocese, who had worked with us on the Leaders' Retreat in August.

the light of the Council's previous review of different groups' needs) for use of the Rectory and Crypt in the optimum way for office, meeting and community space, to enable the long-term lease of the Hall. It was the consensus that it was time to move to action on this. The Trustees hope to present a detailed proposal to the November Financial Vestry.

First, there was feedback on the Leaders' Retreat, which had considered what was appreciated in the life of St. James', and also areas of concern and challenge, not least in the light of the average Sunday attendance figures which show a decline from 350+ in the 1980s to 100 on a good Sunday now. The Retreat had suggested various Priorities, among them Liturgy, Formation, Coffee Hour, recruitment of volunteers for Guilds and Ministry, best use of our buildings.

I reported on the ongoing work with Leslie Arnovick and Paul Stanwood to broaden the scope of Formation. I also highlighted various concerns about the Liturgy expressed at the Retreat, and outlined some of my own (a copy of my statement may be obtained from office@stjames.bc.ca). I concluded: "In this next stage of my Interim role, I intend to look particularly at the High Mass, and to produce a rite which, after consultation with servers, musicians and clergy, and explanatory introduction, we shall use for an experimental period. At the end of that time there will be an opportunity for us to have an informed review together. Be sure that I shall be mindful of our Catholic heritage and our musical tradition, and of the need above all for reverence and mystery in our worship."

The Council had group conversations about what makes a good Coffee Hour, and possible ways in which ours might be enhanced. A working-group (Deacon Joyce, Anne Kennedy, Pat McSherry and myself) will reflect further on this and suggest an experimental way forward. It was reported that a consultant had been engaged to draw up plans (in

KIDS’ CORNER Vision: To help children and their parents find new ways to more fully participate in mass and aid in their spiritual formation. Living Stones (By Tim Johnson) Theme: We along with Jesus are the cornerstones of the church Bible Verses: 1 Peter 2: 5 "you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood..." In our bible-story today Peter uses the word stone to describe rocks and sometimes he even uses it to describe people! So some people even call Peter, "the rock." Even Jesus did! Have a think about how a person might be like a rock… What sort of person would they be? Well Peter said Jesus was like a stone, but not just any old stone, but a corner stone. Do you know what a cornerstone is? Well to build something you need just the right rock or stones or bricks to build everything else around. If we picked a pointy rock, would it be a very good cornerstone for a house? Why not? If the cornerstone is the wrong shape, everything else would fall down and crash. Peter was thinking that just like you need the perfect cornerstone for building, you need just the right person to build your church around. He said that Jesus was the cornerstone of the church. You can't build a building with just one stone can you? Of course not and you can't build a church with just one person. Who else would we need to be part of a church to make it strong?

Priests, Sunday School teachers, visitors, what about people who bring the donuts and coffee? We need lots of different people who believe in Jesus as the cornerstone to be a strong church. It is almost like you are the stones of the church. Listen to verse 5 of 1 Peter, chapter 2, "you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood..." Wait a minute, it says, "YOU are like living stones," does it say only priests or grownups are living stones? No, you ... kids can be living stones. You are an important part of the church. And who is the cornerstone of the church? Jesus!

Let us put our hands together and say thank you to God for our church. "Heavenly Father, thank you that Jesus is our cornerstone and we pray that you will help us be living stones for you every day. Amen." Adapted from messagesforchildren.weebly.com

COMMEMORATION St. Denis Bishop of Paris, and his Companions, Martyrs, 272 October 9 Denis was Bishop of Paris, and a martyr. Born in Italy, nothing is definitely known of the time or place, or of his early life. That while still very young he was distinguished for his virtuous life, knowledge of sacred things, and firm faith, is indicated by the fact that Pope Fabian (236-250) sent him with some other missionary bishops to Gaul on a difficult mission. The Church of Gaul had suffered terribly under the persecution of the Emperor Decius and the new messengers of Faith were to endeavour to restore it to its former flourishing condition. Denis with his inseparable companions, the priest Rusticus and the deacon Eleutherius, arrived in the neighbourhood of the present city of Paris and settled on the island in the Seine. On the island in the Seine Denis built a church and provided for a regular solemnization of the Divine service. His fearless and indefatigable preaching of the Gospel led to countless conversions. This aroused the envy, anger and hatred of the heathen priests. They incited the populace against the strangers and importuned the governor Fescenninus Sisinnius to put a stop by force to the new teaching. Denis with his two companions were seized and, as they persevered in their faith, were beheaded (about 275) after many tortures. The bodies of the three holy martyrs received an honourable burial through the efforts of a pious matron named Catulla and a small shrine was erected over their graves. This was later on replaced by a beautiful basilica. www.newadvent.org/ cathen/04721a.htm

COMMEMORATION St. Paulinus First Bishop of York, Missionary, 644 October 10 Paulinus was a Roman monk who was made a bishop in the year 625 and sent to the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria, where he settled at York and ministered to the few Christians at the court of King Edwin. The pagan king engaged Paulinus in long private discussions about the Christian faith and eventually called a council of his nobles to debate whether he should accept Paulinus’ religion. One of them answered in the classic tones of the Anglo-Saxon heritage and said: “This, O King, is how the present life of man appears to me in comparison with that time which is unknown. You are sitting feasting with your nobles in winter time; the fire is burning on the hearth in the middle of the hall and all inside is warm, while outside the wintry storms of rain and snow are raging; and a sparrow flies swiftly through the hall. It enters in at one door and quickly flies out through the other. For the few moments it is inside, the storm and wintry tempest cannot touch it, but after the briefest moment of calm it flits from your sight, out of the wintry storm and into it again. So this life of man appears but a moment; what follows or indeed what went before, we know not at all. If this new doctrine brings us more certain information, it seems right that we should accept it.” The council decided that Edwin would do right to become a Christian; and on Easter Day, 627, Paulinus baptized him. Many Northumbrian noblemen followed their king’s example, and Paulinus was able to extend his mission beyond York, founding churches as far south as Lincoln. But his work suffered a terrific setback when Edwin was killed in battle with the pagan Mercians, who then ravaged the Northumbrian church. Paulinus decided to quit northern England and return to Kent, where he was made bishop of Rochester and devoted himself to his flock until his death in the year 644.
