Dedication Sunday | October 6, 2013 | 10:30 AM
Welcome Welcome to St. James’, especially if you are a newcomer or visitor. Children of all ages are fully welcome at every liturgy. We hope that you will enjoy your visit here with us. Please help us to get to know you by introducing yourself to one of the clergy. VISION STATEMENT Discovering the beauty of holiness in our lives and neighbourhood, by living a Christ-centred sacramental life rooted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. MISSION OBJECTIVES • To be a beacon for all as a neighbourhood and destination church where we invite and welcome friends, family and strangers into our midst; • To deepen our life of prayer and formation in Christ; • To develop relationships and fellowship in open, honest and spiritual ways among parishioners, with our neighbours, and those in need; • To pursue and practice justice and mercy for the imparting of the Kingdom of God within and beyond the Parish; •To maintain financial equilibrium, develop our reserves and optimize the use of our assets to ensure the preservation of our sacred space and ministry from generation to generation, to the everlasting glory of God. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The image on the front cover of the bulletin was taken by Dallas Bittle, showing the cornerstone of the St. James’ building, third of that name, second on this site, dedicated on November 11, 1935 to the Greater Glory of God. The first Mass in the completed church was held August 30, 1936, and was attended by Lord Tweedsmuir, then Governor General of Canada. This booklet is printed on recycled paper. Discarded copies will be recycled. 2 | HIGH MASS
Before Mass If you require assistance at any time, please speak to one of the welcomers at the Church entrance (narthex). As a friendly reminder, please turn off all electronic devices that might disrupt worship. In the interest of security, please keep purses and other valuables with you at all times. Wireless hearing amplifiers are available. Washrooms can be accessed through the doors on the left hand side at the back of the church on the opposite side to the entrance. Your family is welcome at St. James’. Children may remain in the Church during the service: there is a play area with toys and colouring books in the back of the church. The sacrament of reconciliation (confession) is available. Speak with a priest to make an appointment. The Mass booklet contains all the prayers and information required to participate in the Mass. The directions given in this booklet to stand, sit and kneel are offered as guidelines to those who are able. The symbol + indicates when to make the sign of the cross. It is also customary to make a discreet bow at the name of Jesus. You are encouraged to take the opportunity before Mass for silence, stillness and prayer. Please refrain from talking before Mass begins. We adore you, most Holy Lord Jesus Christ here and in all your churches throughout all the world; and we bless you because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. St. Francis of Assisi

Blessed are they that dwell in thy house. They will always be praising thee. Let us pray. O God our heavenly Father, make the door of our parish church wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship and a Father’s care, and narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride, and uncharitableness. Here may the tempted find succour, and the sorrowing receive comfort; here may the careless be awakened to repentance, and the penitent be assured of thy mercy; and here may all thy children renew their strength in thee and go on their way rejoicing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. The Liturgy of the Word OLD TESTAMENT READING Reader
Be seated
A reading from the Book of Habakkuk The oracle that the prophet Habak'kuk saw. O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you "Violence!" and you will not save? Why do you make me see wrongdoing and look at trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. So the law becomes slack and justice never prevails. The wicked surround the righteous - therefore judgment comes forth perverted.
Reader All
I will stand at my watchpost, and station myself on the rampart; I will keep watch to see what he will say to me, and what he will answer concerning my complaint. Then the LORD answered me and said: Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so that a runner may read it. For there is still a vision for the appointed time; it speaks of the end, and does not lie. If it seems to tarry, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Look at the proud! Their spirit is not right in them, but the righteous live by their faith. Habakkuk 1: 1 - 4; 2: 1 - 4 The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL
All stand and turn to face the book of the Gospels
The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’ His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’ The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. John 2:13-22

All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, who didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” + Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins: Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” + Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

THE OXFORD MOVEMENT The Oxford Movement of the 1830s demanded a rebirth of the life of the English Church. Its principal leaders argued for the historic and apostolic ministry; they emphasized the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist; they promoted social action and deep pastoral concern; they applied their formidable scholarship to translating the Greek and Latin fathers of the church and republishing the great English theologians and divines of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Theirs was, above all, a call to holiness, a call that changed the course of the Church not for a time only; for theirs was a call that we still are hearing and obeying.

St. James’ News & Announcements Devotional Resources Scripture Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28: 16-20.) Intention For the guidance and direction of the Holy Spirit upon this season of review at St. James’ and recommendations for action. Reflection "We need to be a risk taking church. There is no safety in Christ there's absolute security but there is no safety and we have to make a big difference between knowing that we are in his arms and knowing that he calls us to do risky things. So the vision is about being a risk-taking Church and finding ways of liberating people to be risk-takers, in the service of Christ." (May 17, 2013.
